Entwistle family, Bolton,Lancaster, England to Canada

My dad was Ralph Entwistle. He was born in Bolton,Lancaster,England, in Jan. 1903. He came to Canada with his parents, father's name James. James had brothers, I believe Thomas,John, and another one, and some sisters. James dad was Ralph also. I believe Ralphs dad was also James. I believe one of James sisters name was Beatrice and owned Mrs. Twistle's self rising flour company. Please reply if you think we are related.

Hello Barbara,

James Greenwood Entwistle was my great uncle, brother of my great grandfather John S. Entwistle who died very young leaving 3 small sons.

I am just learning about this side of our family. Do you have any links which might help me find out more? I am trying to trace the origin of the family in Britain but I am having difficulty locating Richard's father and mother James and Ann.

Many thanks,

Kathy de Witt

I don't have much info as far as dates, but I forgot to mention the location. John Wilkinson and Elizabeth Gallagher were both born near Phila., PA ~1921 and 1927, +/- 5, respectively. So, I'm guessing Elizabeth Diller and John Gallagher were born near the turn of the century, and to my knowledge in Philly, and George Diller died in Philly (not sure when), but may have been born in Germany or elsewhere in Europe. The numbers would say he was born in the 1870's, 80's, or possibly early 90's. We have no info on Entwisle, other than it was the name of a direct female reltion, either his wife, mother-in-law, or mother. Sorry I don't have more info, but that's what I'm seeking. Thanks so much.

I'm looking to find info that I can trace back to by grandparents, John George Wilkinson and Elizabeth Jane Gallagher. Elizabeth's parents were Elizabeth Frances Diller and John Gallagher. We also know that Elizabeth Diller's father was George Diller, and we believe either his wife or his wife's mother's maiden name was Entwistle (Entwhistle?).
try this address: penygader@wiss.com. I think that is the correct e-mail address for the membership secretary. I have been corresponding with them.
Arthur,s (my grandfather) father was Peter William Entwistle, and he was born 26 March 1866 in hulme By Manchester, Lancashire, England. His parents were Peter William and Susan Richardson and he married Ada Cragg Goldey June 4 1888 in Ardwick, Lancashire. This information I found on the Mormon geeological web site. I cannot seem to trace William Sr., there are 5 or 6 possibilities. Apparently there was no birth certificats for our grandfather. I too sent for his S.S. record. Cheryl Jean is researching our grandmother, Jessie Dawding(this is the spelling she found) and her father was also from England.

Are you on the Entwistle rootsweb list? I find posting on the internet a nuisance.

No, I haven't found Thomas' baptism. At marriage he says "of Prestwich". I don't think I have investigated the 1765 one there. Seing as Peter (eventually) married a Pollit, it may bode well that there is also a POLLETT christening that year.

Given that Thomas' age at death in 1825 is given as 63 implying birth in 1762, the slightly later birth date seems to fit.

Hi,

I am Chairman and Research Co-ordinator of the Entwistle Family History Association. I was born and have lived all my life in Darwen, Lancashire, and have extracted Entwistles from all the Darwen censuses, and many of the church registers.

I have found a Richard Entwistle, born 27 April 1885, and baptised in August 1885 at Darwen Lower Chapel. He was the son of John Entwistle and Sarah Ellen, formerly Murray. John was a clogger, and the family lived at 97 Vernon Street, Darwen.

In the 1891 census they were living at 101 Sudell Road, Darwen, where John’s age is given as 38 years. He was born in Darwen. Sarah is 34 years of age and was born in Prestwich.

I have not found the marriage of a William Entwistle and a Sarah Ann Murray, nor the marriage of a John Entwistle and a Sarah Ellen Murray, at any of the Church of England churches in Darwen. As John and Sarah Ellen’s son, Richard was baptised in a non-conformist chapel (Congregational) it is likely that their marriage would have taken place there, but these records are not available locally.

Perhaps you should check whether the information you have is correct.

Barbara Nightingale [www.entwistlefamily.org.uk]
Hi,

You haven't posted a message on our Entwistle Family History Association website, but I've now found out why my message didn't go through, so I've made some changes and I'll try again.

I've checked, and the marriage in 1872 appears to be the only one between an Alice Entwistle and a Samuel Baldwin around that time. Joe gave you all the information you need to order a copy of their marriage certificate, i.e. 1872, June - September quarter, Bolton Registration District, volume 8c, page 473. You order this on-line by credit card from the GRO, which is the General Register Office, and the information has come from their Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths. Their website is: www.gro.gov.uk

As Joe said, the certificate will give you the names of both fathers, and their occupations, and also the ages of Alice and Samuel when they married. This information will be of help when you come to look for Alice's birth certificate, which will give you her mother's name.

Dot Stutter has suggested that you join the Entwistle Family History Association. I am the Chairman and Research Co-ordinator, and keep all our Entwistle data, so may be able to help you once you have more information. Check out our website: www.entwistlefamily.org.uk

Good luck.

Barbara Nightingale
Your great grandfather sounds like an interesting person. I think it's likely that draft registration card is his - I believe everyone of a certain age had to complete one to declare their eligibility for the draft. It states that he is an Alien, supporting a wife and three kids. Same occupation (machinist) as in the US federal census. From the different birthplaces of the children it looks like he travelled for work.

I believe everyone of the appropriate age had to complete the draft registration cards to declare their status.

Concerning his birth, there is a registration for a birth of a Tom Entwistle in the Dec quarter of 1886 which looks likely to be him.

Births Dec Quarter 1886

Surname, First name,	District, Vol, Page:

Entwistle, Tom, Bolton, 8c, 384

With the above information you can order a copy of his birth certificate from the GRO:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

This will have his mother's full maiden name and address at birth, as well the fathers name as long as she was married.

If you order the certificate, I'm curious to know the details.

All the best,
Joe

Hello Ellen,

I have Entwistles in my family tree and some with the first name Thomas, too, but I don't recognize your ancestor. I have seen, however, the Tom Murray Entwistle who has a WWI registration card with the same birth date you mention. I wonder if this is your source.

The Census records for your Thomas M. has son Wallace who born in New York. Do you know if this was NYC? I can help if it was. NYC Birth certificates sometimes have valuable details.

All the best,
Joe,
in Queens, NY

thanks for your suggestions Barbara. Joe's amazingly swift research got me going in the right direction. I have not yet ordered a birth certificate, but that is the next step. I also checked over a period of time to see if any other Samuel Baldwin and Alice Entwistle were on the same page of a marriage index, and did not find any, which gave me some confidence that I had the right ones. I have since got more information on the Baldwin side, but mystery remains on the Entwistle side.

thank you Joe from Queens for doing some digging for me. I also saw Samuel with his brothers in the census, and looking at the copy of the document saw that a family of Entwistles lived next door.. interesting. What I will need to know is whether it is these two that had baby Agnes. It is certainly possible with a marriage in the year of 1872. With all the Entwistles and plenty of Baldwins in the area, I wouldn't rule out more than one couple of that name. I assume you have Entwistle ancestors? I am fairly new at this, and find that on this website you have to wade through a lot of other data before finding slim information on marriages. Is there a better site where marriages can be sorted out separately? I am also too new to know what GRO stands for. Thanks a lot for giving me enough information to get me closer to finding out what I am looking for.

Also, with another family it looked possible that a mother with children remarried. Not knowing that mother's maiden name, or the first name of the actual father, do you have any suggestions on figuring out who the father might be? the research continues..
J Jr

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Here is what my dad sent me -"I know grandpa, Thomas Murray Entwistle, was born in Bolton (Lancestershire) but don't know his DOB. Know he was a "traveling salesman" in his early life and made his way to Canada where he reportedly ice skated across Lake Erie - or some portion of it to get to the US. Know he was an illegal alien and when WW2 broke out he was worried about deportation but the sons - Wally, Bob, Blaine got things straightened out with the State Dept. The youngest, Harold went into WW2 right out of highschool and served in a number of battles."
So, it WAS Thomas Murray, but the guy was illegal (!) so the draft card wasn't his. I'll have to do more digging!!
