I forgot to mention that Sam Enz died in Olean, NY in 1966 and is buried next to his mother near their farm in Dents Run, PA. They have a grave marker where they are buried. My mother refers to Sam as "Uncle Sammy" and "Uncle Sam". I have some pictures of them as well. My email address is kimgreg@wctc.net. Perhaps I can send you some if you want to see the family pics I have of Hettie, Martin and the kids.

Later,
Greg

Barb,

Thanks for responding my posts concerning Martin and Hettie J. Enz. I was told that Hettie married NORMAN Enz, but records show that it is Martin Enz (Census). The story has it that shortly after Sam was born, Martin went to town and never came back. Since my family is blood related to Hettie and not Martin, we do not know what happened to Martin other than he took off to town and never came back.

I have spent 10 years trying to find who the parents of Hettie J. Enz are. I THINK her maiden name is Lanison. I know she married a Masters. Hettie was Hettie Masters and she gave birth to my gggrandmother, Clara Della Masters. CLara Della married Jonathon Wilson who dies very young. Clara (known to everyone as Della) then married Daniel Beaton. They had a son named Angus Beaton (2/4/05 - 10/01/90). Angus married Eva Johnson and had my mother, Donna M. Beaton. My mother married Thomas George Auman (03/11/30 - 08/14/64). They had me.

If you know ANYTHING about how I can get information on Hettie's parents, I will be one happy camper.

If you need to know more about Sam, Odellia or the others, let me know.

THanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,
I've read your posts in the past, but wasn't sure we were talking about the same family, but since you explained Clara Della being born before Hettie married Martin Enz, it all makes sense. One of your posts from 2002 referred to a Norman Enz being married to Hettie. Is this a brother or another name Martin had? Do you know where Martin is buried? Do you have any info on Martin & Hettie's children, Rosa, Odelia or Sam? I found Martin & Catharine's daughter, Catharine Seward, who is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery in Kersey, PA; thanks to a volunteer at Elk County Genealogy who did the lookup. My husband & I visited her grave last summer. There are a number of Enz' buried there as well. I think they are likely related to Martin. That cemetery is now online on the Elk County website. I need to make a trip to St. Marys and see if I can locate info on Martin's children by Catharine.

Thanks for the information.
Barb Allen

I suspect that we are related. Some of us Enzes in Kansas have been doing a lot of research, and there are a Johann and a Peter Enz who were brothers whose ancestors we are looking for. At least one of them spent some time in California. One also spent time in Chicago. It's been a while since I looked at my records, so I'm not quite sure which was which. They came over from Germany later than the rest of the family, and ended up in different places. Their father and mother were Johann and Justina Enz. Johann and Justina left Marienberg in April of 1881 and came over on the SS General Werder, landing in New York City. Both of them died soon after their arrival, having contracted typhus.

Hi. My Aunt Estelle and Uncle Raymond Enz lived in the LA area for many years (60s...maybe earlier). Also not sure when they moved to the Vidal/Indio area. I last visited them there in the early to mid 70s. They had three sons: James, Joseph and Daryl. I know Daryl and Jim died many years ago, and I have no idea about Joe and his family. I seem to remember that they lived in Indio and ran a family gas station. But once again this was in maybe 1973-74. My cousin, Joe was married to Georgette and they had two children names Joe and April. Jim was married to a gal named 'Boots' and they had two daughters, Linda and Melody.
I am hoping to hear from anyone who remembers them or may know the where abouts of Joe or any of their grandchildren. My Dad, Jack Allen, was Estella's brother and they came from Michigan. Thank-you.
Renee Allen Dougherty

I can't believe you are actually going to Wagenstadt!

My Enz line traces down from Jakob Enz to Theresa Ketterer (through Rombach/Enz), who married Wilhelm Gaertner. Wilhelm and Theresa emigrated to the U.S. in 1861-2 and settled in Lancaster, PA.

My great, great grandmother MARIA GAERTNER, daughter of Wilhelm & Theresa, had an illegitimate son, Charles or Karl, in 1860-61 while in Baden. I would love to find out who is listed as his father on the birth record, but I have nothing. If you can find out the name of the local catholic church, it would be a great boost to my researching, as I can write to them and ask for his birth record.

You may contact me directly at krupa@windstream.net.

Hope you have a pleasant journey and accomplish your own mission.

Elizabeth Krupa

I found a book at the Family History Library in salt Lake City last year that lists all the residents of Wagenstadt. I found about 25 new individuals for my family tree, ending with Jakob Enz, b abt 1630, d abt 1714. Maybe you had access to the same book. It was very informative.

Is there a catholic cemetery in Wagenstadt that you know of?

Enz from Elk County, PA

I posted about this subject a couple of years ago, but no response to date. Since then, I have researched further. I believe that Martin & Katie Enz emigrated from Germany before 1850. One of their children, Catharine, married Daniel Seward and they had 3 children, George, Floretta and Cecil (my husband's grandmother). Katie may have died before 1880 as Martin remarried a Hettie. They had 2 daughters, Rosa and Adelia and a son Sam. I have based this on the Elk County census records from 1850 to 1930. Does anyone have a relationship to Martin and Katie and know when they emigrated or tanything about heir line in Germany?
I am not sure where they lived in PA, but their daughter,Cecil Maude married William Allen and lived in Renovo, PA. I am also interested in the origin of the name as it is unusual( at least in central Pa). We know very little about my husband's family. As result, he knows virtually nothing about the name except that it is German. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you.

Hi Vienna, my wife, Stacey Bagans (Shurr), forwarded me your message. The Bagans' in the Reading, PA area are Myself (26), and three half-siblings (on the Bagans side). They are Justin (21), Josh (20), Amber (15). My father's name was John Bagans. I am not sure of my grandfather's last name. I can check into that. If you have any information on my surname I would appreciate it.

I do have an Aunt, Beverly Bagans, who live in the Virgin Islands now (no children), and another Aunt Amy Bagans, who is married (don't know the married name), who lives in Chicago and has twin daughters and a son. See the following link and search the page for a pic:

http://www.ci.chi.il.us/CommunityPolicing/AboutCPD/Awards/99...

Here is a link to an article referencing Bagans Bishton:

http://www.geocities.com/~ilionny/newsmemorials_2001.html

I know there are alot of Bagans' in Michigan, but don't know their relation. I do know however, from a lineage website I visited last year (that I can't find now), that the name Bagans orginates from the Eastern Part of Germany, or what was Austria.

I would appreciate any other info you may have
Vienna,

Enz is from the old Germany which I believe also had territory in Switzerland. Almost all of the Enz's that I have heard of came from these 2 locations. My family came from Wurttenberg, which is southern Germany. But I have also heard of a town that is Enz and even possibly a river, both of which are in Germany.

My last name is BAGANZ, and I've seen it spelled BAGENZ, BREGENZ, BAGANCZ, BAGANDT, BAGANTZ and BAGANS. The BAGANS family came to the US with the spelling of BAGANZ. They changed it for some reason to BAGANS. Sometimes the owners change the spelling to correspond with the sound. Maybe some pronounce the sound "z" or the sound "s." I have been doing etymological research on the name BAGANZ for many years, and I think ENZ and ENS are the same name.

Two possible options that I'm aware of:

1. One BAGANZ contact of years agso told me her family claimed to have been conservative Heugonots who departed France to Berlin (where statistically the majority of BAGANZ families are even today) just before the Paris Bartholomew massacre of 1758. She believed the name was spelled "de Bagance."

2. My grandfather told us the name had been changed but he said it was from the Braganza family of Portugal.

Anyone have more insight into this? Thanks.
