Grandchildren of Ernest E. Epling (b 1875) and Stella B of WV

Hello,

I am looking for any living grandchildren of Ernest E. Epling (Born 1875) and wife Stella B. Epling (Born 1882), both who were from the Flat Top/Shady Spring areas of Mercer and Raleigh County in WV. The names and birthdates of Ernest and Stella's seven children are:

Gladdys (1900), Neta (1902), Wayne (1905), Tennyson (1907), Mary (1909), Alma (1912), and Carl (1916).

All of the above children were born in Flat Top/Shady Spring WV. If any of you are children or grandchildren of the 7 Eplings listed above, please contact me.

The reason - I am searching to confirm indian ancestry in my Epling line, which supposedly occurred when Andrew Shelburn Epling (B 1850) married Mary Elizabeth Leftwich (B 1844) in Giles County VA in 1874. Legend has it that Mary Elizabeth's mother, Evaline, was full-blooded "Mahock", Manahoac or Monacan Indian. Her father was William Early Leftwich, and Mary was William and Evaline's only child. Andrew and Mary Elizabeth had only 2 children, William Shelburn Epling, and Ernest E. Epling. I come from William Shelburn Epling's line and have exhausted all sources information from that line. My hope is that grandchildren of Ernest will have similar stories or actual evidence of the Indian ancestry.

Thanks!
Michael Barber
Grandson of Andrew Dayton Epling

Mary Ann Epling was the daughter of Henley Harrison Epling and his 2nd wife Amanda Pauline Pickle. Mary Ann Epling and her husband Edwin Rood had 4 children: Alice, Harry, Florence and Cory. I have information on their descendants, and also on the ancestry of Henley Epling. If you can let me have your e-mail address and also tell me what area of the country you live in, I can probably help you with more information. Sharon Meeker, NJ

Beth, Saw your old mess. about William T. EPLING and wife Mary and Jeff EPLING and confusion on dates and spelling of names. Maybe by now you have it straightened out because my dates are different and Mary's last name was NICHOLAS not NICHOLS, or so I was told at some point in time.

My grandmother was Dola EPLING, fifth child of ten children born to William T. EPLING b. Nov. 4, 1874 (no documentation on date)and Mary NICHOLAS b. Dec. 1877, dau. of Charles and Eliza CARPENTER. Yes, Ada EPLING, sixth child, married Walter Lee BATTAN and they had five children.

Sure, we are talking the same family, ours! Later, Another Cousin, Deborah METZ ANDREWS

These children were niece and nephew to your grandmother Dola Epling Metz. Your Dad went to John's funeral and calling hours.
He had tried many time to visit with John when he was at his lodge
which is located at the Roan & Calhoon County Line. Look for the Metz mailbox on Rt.33 East outside of Spencer. In fact that is where your Dad is this week, that's why I am answering for him. Irene Metz

Yes I believe we are cousins. Grandma was named grace, she died when dad was very young. I don't know alot of info. My dad, John Landon Epling just passed in Dec. 2001. I accidentally found this website, and saw that my brother had also written to someone in here and got the idea to see if he was on to something. We grew up in Akron, but spent a lot of summers in Spencer. Dad was raised by Madge and Ferrell Webb, from otto star route in spencer. I haven't been to Epling cemetary in lots of years, til Dec. Any info on relatives you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I am going to e-mail Alen, my brother, and tell him about this. You can also e-mail me directly @ dheath2002@wmconnect.com...
Thank you so much. by the way who are your parents, and how old are you??? I am 38, brother is 44, sister Lori is 41, and baby sister Juanita (lives in Spencer with Mom Sue) is 33. Dad had a half sister Rita, and full sis Jesse, and brother Mac. Dad was born in 1936. the others I don't know .

Donna, I am 99% sure we are cousins. Too many similiarities not to be!
I do not know great Uncle T.R. (Theodore) EPLING's wife. From EPLING cemetary records, I have a Theodore R. born in 1900 and died in 1965. I believe he is the second eldest of 10 children born to William EPLING and Mary Nicholas. My grandmother Dola EPLING METZ was no. 5 in the family between sister's Eva EPLING NORMAN and Ada EPLING BATTEN. Grandma METZ died in Sept.19, 1999 in Ohio. She was just 5 days from being 90 yrs. young. We had been at a COUSINS reunion just prior to this in W. Va.

A Gracie B. EPLING is listed in the same records, bn. 1898 and died 1937. Could this possibly be T.R.'s wife?

Deborah- (Pete's daughter)

Sue:

I thought that might be the George W. Epling you wanted, since his wife's name was Huffman.

You are correct that he was the son of Isaac Epling. I urge you to contact Robert Massard. He has been working on Eplings for many years and has just produced a 1000-page book on them. He is descended from Isaac's brother Paul. Bob Massard is not online; you will have to contact him via snail mail, but I am sure it will be worth it. He is very interested in contact from Epling descendants -- especially those so closely related as you are. Be sure to let him know how you are related to George W. Epling.

Robert Massard
28 Standish Circle
Wellesley Hills, MA 02481

Good luck with your research. Sharon Meeker.
You might write to the Boone County West Virginia Genealogical Society, Box 10, Hewett, WV 25701. I think some one there could help you. There is several volumes called Kith Kin that I have seen in the library at Beckley, WV. I would think they would have a copy. There is a lot about the Epling's in Boone county in them. There should be a copy in the Boone County library in Madison, WV.
