Benjamin Holland Epperson

hi, all, i am a gggrandaughter of Ben, and have been delving into other geneology that keeps crossing his (i think). if you are familiar with him, you may know that he was a great friend of the indians, and along with Houston, tried to prevent the Cherokees and others from being expelled from Texas by Mirabeau Lamar. he also did a lot of business in Oklahoma, and visited there frequently. okay, here is the question? were his eppersons part indian? i know Ben was red haired and blue eyed, but my friend Bessie Johnson is too, and she is a full blooded cherokee. my great gradnfather, Robert Benjamin Epperson, was dark. there are many Hollands who are on the Cherokee rolls, and, of course, there was the great white Cherokee, William HOLLAND Thomas. no one in our family ever had any information beyond Caro and Nancy Neill, Ben's parents and we are not connected to the other Eppersons who seem to be descended from french ancestors. my family are all dark, high cheekbones, black haired and black eyed, except for me. we all have the distinctive shovel incisors. has anyone in this line ever heard of indian blood in the family? has anyone ever found any Hollands back beyond Benjamin's generation? i know Ben has a couple of brothers, but have never seen photographs of them, or any other ancestors. our family house in Clarksville burned, with all the family history. Ben's second wife probably gave anything of his to his family be his first wife, but my great gandmother died at 26, and he remarried, sending his two children to be raised by their grandparents. from all this, you can guess we have very little other than my grandmother's history and a very few photographs that escaped the fire. if there are other Benjamin desendants reading this, cousin Peggy and i would love to hear from you, especially any oklahoma folks.
best to all, callie

obituary Ophelia Harrington Epperson

Ophelia Harringtgon is the daughter of Jonathan Cyrus Harrington and Julia Ann Clark.

Ophelia was born 20 Dec 1838 in Oswego, New York

She died 08 May 1910 per Mills County, Iowa Death Record Bk 3, Page 50 - Cause of death: Senile pneumonia

She is buried at Glenwood, Iowa Cemetery, Section 1, Row 25
*************************************************************

Mills County Tribune
May 10, 1910

Mrs. Charles Lee Epperson, one of the early pioneers of Mills County, died Sunday evening at 5:40 at her home southwest of Glenwood in Lyons township, aged 71 years and past. Death resulted from pneumonia and her illness was brief. She was taken sick the Monday before with a severe cold, and this quickly developed into something more serious.

The funeral was held from the home this Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, and was conducted by Elder J. F. Mintun of Des Moines. Burial took place in the Glenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Epperson enjoyed the distinction of being one of the earliest settlers in Mills County. She came here with her parents in 1841, and had resided continuously in the county for 64 years. Her maiden name was Ophelia Arthusa Harrington and her people settled with others down in the Egypt neighorhood near Bartlett.

She was born Dec. 20, 1838, in Oswego county New York, and was united in marriage on Aug. 16, 1860, to Mr. Epperson. Had she been spared till next August the couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Five children were born to them, one of which, Clara Lenna, died at the age of six weeks. The four surviving children are David Elias Epperson, Charles Guy Epperson and Mrs. Anne Effie Hunter, all of Mills County, and Jonathan Roy Epperson of Des Moines. The husband also survives. The family have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow.

obituary--Charles Lee Epperson--Mills county, Ia

Mills County Tribune
May 17, 1910

Last week the Tribune recorded the death of Mrs. Charles L. Epperson, one of the early day pioneers of Mills County, at her home southwest of Glenwood. This week we are called upon to chronical the death of Mr. Epperson, which followed within six days of that of his wife. The wife died at 5:40 Sunday evening, May 8, 1910, and the husband passed away on the following Saturday morning at 6:20. Pneumonia was the cause of death in each instance.

The funeral services were held on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock from the home, and the remains were conveyed to the Glenwood cemetery and laid beside those of the wife. The same minister presided at each funeral. This was Elder J. F. Mintun of Des Moines.

The same pall bearers---old time neighbors and friends of the family---acted at each funeral. Those were Paul Haynie, Harvey Dean, Charles Kroon, Howard Morrow, W. E. DeLashmutt and W. H. Morgan.

The music was rendered by the same singers at each funeral---Mrs. S. S. Clark, Mrs. Ella Walling, Miss Lillie Clark and George Clark.

Mr. Epperson had resided in Mills County almost continuously for 58 years. He was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, July 30, 1835, and at the time of his death was past 74 years of age. He moved with his father Elias Epperson to Linn Grove, Cedar County, Iowa, in 1837. From there the family moved to Tipton in 1849, thence to Council Bluffs, in 1850. His father died in 1852, and he moved with his mother in 1851 to Mills County, locating on a farm four miles north of Glenwood.

In 1864 Mr. ad Mrs. Epperson crossed the plains by team to visit relatives in the west, and were gone about a year. With this exception, they were residents of Mills County for more than a half century.

He was married to Ophelia A. Harrington Aug. 16, 1860, and to them five children were born, one dying in infancy.

Mr. Epperson was respected for his honesty and ingegrity, and his life was a simple, unassuming one. He and his companion had both been faithful members of some years of the Latter Day Saints church. The four surviving children are David Elias Epperson, Charles Guy Epperson, and Mrs. Annie Effie Hunter, all of Mills County, and Jonathan Roy Epperson of Des Moines. He is also survived by an older brother, Sidney Epperson of Midway, Utah.

The children desire to return thanks to neighbors and friends for their many acts of kindness in this their double affliction.

2008 National

Epperson Reunion

Sat. Oct 4th

Municipal Park Carthage , Mo

Located west edge of town on historic

Route 66

at the large open barn pavilion People start arriving around 9:00 a.m.

The reunion is open to everyone connected to any Epperson family line. We have several lines represented every year. Some of us bring genealogy materials, but more importantly, everyone has a good time visiting and meeting new relatives (no matter how distantly connected).

The potluck lunch usually starts around noon. Those of us traveling in from other parts of the country usually go to the park first and decide what to buy from the local deli's after we see what is already there.

It looks like lodging shouldn't be an issue this year. I have been in contact with the Precious Moments people and they do not have any events that weekend.

I hope to see many familiar faces October 4th as well as lots of new faces too.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me.
Susie Scott
sscott1962@msn.com

The Best Budget Inn east side of Carthage located next to Kellogg Lake on ole Route 66.

Has plenty of good clean rooms for a very reasonable rate. We can start the reunion Friday evening with a stroll around Kellogg lake.. Supper at the Steak house in town..

1-417-358-6911 for reservations.
about Annette Epperson

Hello! I'm looking for information about a lady from Sumner I happen to be related to. Her maiden name is Annette Smart. She was born in Sumner in 1913, (daughter of David Smart) and she later married Daniel Roland Epperson (called Brick) of Sumner.

Did they have any children, their own or maybe fostered children, adopted children? Or did Annette's sister have a daughter? Was there a girl named Anita Epperson who was linked to this family? Do you know how they were related? Could somebody also tell me if Anita ever got married and to whom? It might help me trace her, since I doubt she still lives in the Sumner area.

If anybody could help out, I'd be forever grateful. Thanks!
Sarah James from Edinburgh

VanZandt of Cove, AR.

"This being Christmas Eve night, my mind runs back half a century of more to my childhood and boyhood days, when Pope county was a little more than a wilderness.

We landed in Pope County in the fall of 1847 and settled in the Boiling Springs community in the northern part of the county. The people who lived in that community at that time were Ed Campbell, Clark Epperson, whose father lived on what is now known as the Houston Birch place, the Widow Ridge, Widow Sullivan, Widow McCloud, Jim McCracken, Nathan Rowland, George Rowland and Jim Gilihand, who married old uncle John Rowland's widow. They left that county when I was small and I have never heard of them since. She had a son by her first husband whose name was Polk Rowland, who was my age". Besides those I have named were Ben Rose, John Cordel, Green Cordell,, Copeland, Sam Maloney, ANDERSON BAILEY, old Stitha Linton, Jim Sinclair, Chesty Turnbow, Joe Turnbow, John Gray, Helms, Pennington, Bill McCowen and his father, Bill Johnson, Jim Bruton, Ira Brown and the others. A good many of these people left that county directly after we moved in there. There was "Governor Hades", as we called him, who lived on the place now owned by D. M. Griffin. There was also Lee Langford, Ben Langford, Adam Ross, Allen Price, which includes about all the in that neighborhood at that time."
Notes for WINNIFRED WILCOXSON:

Tom Epprson from Arkansas Screen wirter to novelist..

What line of Epperson's is Tom from??????????

Screenwriter Tom Epperson is living his dream
Now he's written a well-received L.A. crime novel.

By Scott Timberg, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer(L.A. Times)

February 6, 2008

Tom Epperson, a longtime Hollywood screenwriter and even more longtime aspiring novelist, is a gentle man who's just published a brutal book. Epperson, who has a shy Arkansas twang and a slight hangdog manner, was talking on a recent afternoon about his 1930s-esque noir, "The Kind One," at Musso & Frank's in Hollywood, a place he loves for its literary ghosts.
Searching for My Great Grand Mother's Parents

Hi, I've just recently started trying to put our family tree together and I have run into a bit of a snag. My great grand mother, Della Mae Epperson (Stephenson) was raised by her grand parents (I have found Della Mae Epperson in the 1910 Census listed as granddaughter of Squire) - Grand father Squire S Smith in Titus Texas. I see that Squire had four children but I am unable to locate anything on them linking them to Della. I'll take any help you can give me :)

Thanks,
Brent

pbituary Mamie T. (Hinch) Epperson, Mt. Vernon, Ill w/o F.T. Epperson

Mamie T. Hinch Epperson was born October 24, 1881, and died April 17,1921 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. At the time of her death her age was 39 years, 4 months and 2 days. She professed faith in Christ when young in years and united with Antioch Baptist church. She was converted and baptized under the efforts of Elder R. W. Lee and often expressed her desire for him to conduct her funeral service should he be living at her death and her wishes were granted. She remained a faithful member of this church until God called her home. She leaves to mourn her departure a beloved husband, F. T. Epperson and three children, Zelia, Mable and Pauline; three children having preceded her to the Glory world. She also leaves a dear mother, one brother, three half-sisters, one half-brother and a number of other relatives, also a great host of friends. She was a devoted wife and mother, possessing a very kind and lovable disposition; her kindness made her a great number of friends, they being numbered only by her acquaintances. Sister Epperson has paid the debt we all must pay but our loss is her Eternal gain.
Obituary Sarah O.Epperson wife of Charles D. Epperson-McLeansboro, Tenn.

From: McLeansboro Times, October 16, 1919

Sarah O. Epperson was born September 6, 1831, in Jackson County, Tennessee and departed this life at her home in McLeansboro, October 9, 1919, at 8:45 p.m., aged 88 years, 1 month and 3 days.
She was united in marriage at the age of 17 years to Charles D. Epperson, and to this union ten children were born: names, P. M.; J. V; J. W; J. C; R. E.;
K. T.; and W. J., sons. Two daughters, Elmira and Tobitha. K. T., Charles D. and Tobitha preceded her in death.

She professed faith in Christ early in life and became a charter member of Middle Creek Baptist church, and lived a faithful and devoted Christian life to the last.

Grandma, as she was familiarly called, lived a quiet, industrious life, and always assumed her duties with pleasure, she was a kind mother, a good neighbor, and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances.

She leaves to mourn their loss, 7 children, 33 grand-children, 2 sisters, the only ones who survive her of a family of 14 children; and a host of relatives and friends.

Grandma is among the last of the old school of mothers who sacrificed everything in life that they might bring into the world a strong race of men and women, of whom they might be proud.

We weep not as those who have no hope, and as we tell her goodbye, it is only for a while, for we expect to meet her again.
Anthony Epperson, Henry Co., VA 1850

Has anyone tied the Anthony Epperson, age 75, who appears in the 1850 Census in Henry Co., VA, to one of the Epperson lines?
The household includes:
Anthony Epperson age 75
Elizabeth " age 75
Mary " age 40
Tempe Walker age 35
Ellen " age 12
Doctor " age 5

Tempe is Anthony's (presumably widowed) daughter.
Some researchers say that Anthony married Elizabeth Witcher (who was also married to William Napier); the Elizabeth in this HH may be that Elizabeth. I am descended from the Elizabeth/Betsy Witcher who married William Napier (and apparently later married an Anthony Epperson).

I would appreciate any info on the identity of this Anthony.
Thank you,
Allison
Sarah Jane Epperson Kiger

I am looking for the family of Sarah Jane Epperson, born in Missouri on August 1, 1848. In various census records, her father is described as being born in Indiana, while her mother is listed as born in Missouri, Tennessee or Kentucky, depending on the census year. Sarah married Andrew Kiger in 1867, and they moved to Iowa before 1870, where she died in 1939. I have been unable to find this Epperson family on the 1850 or 1860 census; there are a few Sarahs in Missouri, but they are not the right age. I know nothing about her parents or brothers and sisters. Help would be appreciated.

John Epperson married Emelia Bell or Celia Mitchell?

I've recently checked out the Ancestry World Tree with my trial membership and have discovered two John Epperson's. Each with the same birthdate of March 08, 1783 in East Bend, Surrey County, Virginia. The difference comes with their wives. I am descended from the John Epperson who married Emelia Bell from South Carolina on June 17, 1812, moved to Georgia, had 8 kids and died November 24, 1862. Apparently, there is another John Epperson who married Celia Mitchell had 11 children and died in Cooper County, Missouri between the years of 1835 and 1838.

Any ideas what happened here?

Epperson Clark Co KY, Fayette Co KY, and IN, VA

In the 1850 Clark Co. KY census, there's a Francis Epperson, age 50 born in VA (b. 1799-1800); a James H. Epperson, age 39 (b. 1810-1811); Nancy (b.1811-1812 VA), Louisa (b. 1815-1816), Patsey (b. 1823-1824) and these 3 are living together with children named Fanny, John F., William P.H., Athucaswell (aka Caswell), LeGrand (aka Lizzerna DeGrand), and an Ambrose that's age 5 and who was born in Indiana. Question #1 - Who were these childrens' father? Question #2 - Who did these Eppersons descend from? Going back to Francis Epperson, that name also appeared in the 1830 and 1840 Clark Co. KY census, along with Barnet and John Epperson. Barnet and John Epperson appeared in the 1820 Clark Co. KY census. A John Epperson appeared in the 1810 Clark Co. KY census, but a Barnet Epperson appeared in the 1810 Bourbon Co. KY census. I believe these men were all tied together. And there was a Francis and John Epperson in the 1800 Fayette Co. KY census. Does anyone have more information on this family? You may also email me - DreamToday@webtv.net
Thanks!

They had a boarder, a Ms. Hattie M. SCHUMAN, 31 years old, living with them.

1880 Census, found on FamilySearch.org, Family History Library Film 1254438, Monterey, Owen County, Kentucky, shows John (aged 22) Sarah (aged 24) and two children, Cora (2) and Carrie (6 mos). All birthplaces are KY. Sarah's birth year given as 1856. 1880 census spells name "EPERSON"

I'm looking for ANY information on John or Sarah..of course primarily I'm trying to find John's parents and Sarah's maiden name.

In Tennessee, there is a place, or used to be a place called Epperson, Tn. Does anyone know how it got it's name? It isn't Epperson Springs, just Epperson and the only map I find it on is a 1969 map of Tennessee. I have tried to write to the location but no one has an answer.
Does anyone know? Must be an Epperson living near who will know this.
Thanks, Margaret Epperson

John Epperson md. Rebecca Sword---new info

I am looking for information on the families of these ancestors. I've done some research and found much of what is posted is at variance with what I've found so, I'd like to know if anyone can help with sources, &c.
1. The Fountain Co, Indiana Probate Index shows that John Epperson died 10/26/1844. Most posted indexes give his death date as Sept. 1846.
2. I have seen many references that John & Rebecca married in Green Co. Kent. in 1812. I have checked with the historical society in Green Co., and they have no record of this marriage.
3. Most sources say that John was the son of Charles Epperson and Sarah Love Lamb, but I don't know of any records showing that either of these two lived in Kentucky or Indiana.
4. The History of Fountain and Warren Co, Indiana gives Calvin Epperson (John & Rebecca's son) place of birth as Paint Creek, Kentucky. Calvin states on the censuses that his parents were born in Virginia and Kentucky.
Does anyone have any sources that can be of use here?

Elizabeth Epperson & George W. Rennick

I found the following entry in H. W. Beckwith's "History Of Fountain County Togehter with Historical Notes on Wabash Valley" printed in 1881 in the Fulton Township Section, Page 428: "About 1829 George W. and Samuel Rennick entered the wilds of Fulton. Here they built a small cabin, and "bached" in the “green woods” their own company. Their sister then kept house for them. They entered eighty acres each, but borrowed money with which to make their purchase. In about two years George W. married ELIZABETH EPERSON, daughter of THOMAS EPERSON, already mentioned, and who entered part of the land on which Marion Rennick lives. George W. Rennick was prominent in the affairs of the township."

Can anyone tell me who this Elizabeth Epperson and Thomas Epperson is?

Hannah Elizabeth Epperson

I'm looking for a connection that can possibly help me in my search.

Hannah Elizabeth Epperson was my great great grandmother. She was b. abt. 1849 in Tennesee, and I find her on the 1880 census married to LJ Wixom, and living in Hunt County, Texas. According to her daughter's marriage record, she went by "Betty".

I believe from reading through census reports for various years, that Jordan Epperson was her father, and I also find him in Hunt County, Texas in 1880.

What confuses me is who her mother was! I see in One World Tree that Jordan was married to "Rebecca Ann Gabbert". but the 1880 census and the 1860 census that I found him on show him married to "Sarah"

I realize there may have been two "Jordan Eppersons", or that since Rebecca Ann died in 1850, that he may have remarried....

I also find that he purchased some land on 10 April, 1857 in Fayetteville Arkansas, using Choctaw Script. Was he Native American?

Anyone have any clues for me?
