I just recently began to research my family geneaology and discovered this message on Lorenzo Ercanbrack. Lorenzo and Helen would be my gggrandparents. Their daughter Rosaltha is my ggrandmother. I have a few questions. 1. My research shows that Lorenzo's father was Jacob ERCANBRACK, However, I have my mother's notes that indicate Lorenzo's father was John P. Ercanbrack. Do you have better information?
2. Did Helen and Lorenzo have other children other than Rosaltha?
3. My mother has notes that she believes Rosaltha was raised in an orphange. True or False?
4. My mother's notes indicate two birthplaces for Rosaltha, one is 9/12/1858 in Winchester, Ark and the other is 9/25/1859 in Tishmingo, Miss. Do you have better information?
5. How did Adeline die? My mother's notes indicates she died on the steamer "Helena." Do you have better information?

Thanks for any information. Don Longfellow in OK

You didn't say what your great-great grandpa names was. But, regarding your great grandpa William Howard Ercanbrack, I have a William H. Ercanbrack born Sept 24, 1857 in or near Moravia, NY. He died about March 8, 1946. I believe his wife was Elizabeth Barry. Their children were William A., Carlton H. and Earl G. Ercanbrack. If this William H. is your William Howard Ercanbrack, then read on.
The parents of William H. were Amos H. Ercanbrack (June 1836 - Nov 1902) and Lucy Munn (Jul 1840 - Jun 1907). Amos' parents were Jacob Ercanbrack (about 1786 - ??) and Hepsibeth Kellog (about 1793 - ??). Please let me know if this helps. If so, I can send you additional information.

The surname Ercanbrack is German. Specifically from the Daudenzell, Baden region of central/south Germany.

According to historical documents (not necessarily related specifically to Erc....), migration from the central Germany duchies in the early 1700's included stays in Holland and England for short periods of time. Hence the confusion with Dutch/English heritage.

Incidentally, there are about 27 spelling derivatives of Erc....so don't get locked into one avenue of research.

History of ERCKENBRACK

Actually Chris, it's both. The confusion is around the emmigration route of the Hans Jorg and Hans Leonard Erkenbrecht families from Daudenzell, Baden, Germany and several small towns there abouts abt. 1725.

According to the information I received from another Erc in Washington State, the Ercs traveled to Holland enticed by the English with PR about streets paved with gold. Actually the English wanted a buffer zone between their colonial holdings and the indians. Anyway,as the story goes, the Ercs followed the Necker River ( a main transportation route) from southern Germany to Holland then crossed the English Channel to England.

They had to stay there until ships were available and they earned their way (there are documented stories of the camps that the English placed Germany people in) Not sure about the indentured servitude issue with this process...although most paid their way through agreements to work for stones for three years once they stepped off the ships.

Finally they came to the colonies. Hans Jorg Erc blazed the PA Erc trail and Hans Leonard went North up the Hudson River to what is now Dutchess County. Over the next 150+ years the Ercs went West migrating to Michigan, Mississippi, Washington State, Utah....everywhere!!! Lots of children as you probably know.

My theory on the Dutch vs. German issue is quite simple. First, they left the European mainland from Holland (Dutch) and second...they were from Deutschland!!! The now politically incorrect monicer.. Dutchmen... used to describe Germans up until recently when one can not use such derrogatory statements in the presence of well meaning liberals. Oppps sorry for the editorialization! :-)

Hope it helps....check out this URL.

http://home.rochester.rr.com/tallen/homepage/Genealogy/famil...

I'm looking for an Al Ercanbrack that married Florence Guthrie/Buck about 1910. Ill I know is Florence Guthrie was born in Iowa April 15, 1884, she married Fred Buck arond 1903 or 1904. By 1910 Fred was in Missouri married to someone else and their two children were with friends and family. Florence married Al Ercanbrack and moved to Chacago, IL around that time.
Hi. I have seen many Ercanbrack records that give your Otis' middle name as Lavara. Cannot say for certain but there is a history on line written by Julia Bartholomew Ercanbrack that should be correct. There are even a couple of pictures there.
Try putting in Bartholomew family in Utah in your web address and see if it pops up.
Good luck----Carol
e-mail: timcar71@att.net

Mary Olive Springer, born 1870 Jackson Co, IA, married as her first husband, William Ercanbrack. He died before 1894 and she married (2) Thomas J. Fitman. William and Mary had two children: Albert born 1886 in Iowa and Lula Belle born 1888 in Illinois. In the 1900 census of Dubuque, IA, Mary, Albert, and Lula are listed in the household of her second husband Thomas Fitman.
Mary Springer was the daughter of David Springer and his second wife Mary A. Robins according to a large genealogy chart done about 1930, found in the DAR manuscript files.
David Springer died 1878 Maquoket, IA according to this chart. Does anyone have any information about any of these people? Did Albert Ercanbrack move to North or South Dakota?

The Lorenzo Ercanbrack in Moravia New York is the son of Jacob Ercanbrack and his second wife, Hepsibeth Kellogg. He born in 1832. I believe your Lorenzo (born about 1816) is the son of John P. Ercanbrack. Jacob (born 1786) and John P. (born 1790) are brothers. Lorenzo of Moravia was married to Ellen Champlin. Lorenzo's sister Sarah Ercanbrack is my great great grandmother.
If you need more info, my email is empeters@nycap.rr.com
