Hi Sharon,

I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply. It's been on my to-do list for quite some time.

I read with interest that you have copies of MBC's citizen certificate and marriage certificate. My dad would love to have copies of that!

My family's line went Martin Bruno, Jacob, Albert, Alvin, Alvin (Big Al), me.

I will email you my dad's phone number and address. He would love those copies! He's 73 and doesn't do computers, but I have problem passing along information.

(It is very exciting to hear of other Clinchards out there. I also thought we were the only ones. One of my dad's cousins, my grandparents, and us.)

Jenny Clinchard Franco

Jenny,

I was so happy to see your message! I am descended from Charles William Clinchard, the 5th child of Martin Bruno Clinchard and Caroline Schmitt. He was born in Newark on the 23 Jan 1850, and died there 06 Feb 1893.

I live in California, and have been wanting to go to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery for a long time to try to find the grave of Martin Bruno and Caroline. Charles William Clinchard is also supposed to have been buried there. If you are able to return to the cemetery, I would be very interested in pictures or any other information you may obtain! My email address is smaas@msn.com.

Thank you! Sharon Maas

Hi! My sister found this chat and told my dad who told me! My birth name is Jennifer Clinchard and I was born in Omaha. My dad is really excited about geneology and has a list of names going back to Martin Bruno Clinchard. I now live in New Jersey, and my family and I went to the cemetery where Martin Bruno is buried. We looked for an hour or so, but were unable to find him. It's a big place, and the office was closed. One of these days we'll go back again. Anyone wanting any information can get a lot of it from my dad, Al Clinchard, in Omaha.
Jenny Franco
jcfranco@juno.com

Hi Jayne, I don't have the list, but I was in contact awhile back with one of the descendants who stayed in Nebraska. There are a handful of Clinchards still, in or around Omaha. The person I spoke with was called Big Al Clinchard! If I find my records from that interaction, I'll post the info! I would suggest, if you have the time, finding some Nebraska Clinchards.

Hi Jayne,
I don't have births and deaths but here is what I have;
Jacob Francois m. Elise (Elsie) Balbach on Sept. 30, 1866. Jacob was born on March 25, 1841 at 11:30 AM in Bloomfield, NJ and baptised by Rev. F Winkle (Lutheran) on May 30, 1841. he died in March, 1906. His children were
Frank, Edward, Albert, Charles, Fred (from whom I believe Lori is descended), Will, George, Bird (f), Amelia, Constance and Earl who married Lillian ? and they produced two daughters, Mae and Arleen, who both married but I don't have that info. I am descended from Bruno Henri and if you would like any of that info I'd be happy to pass it along. I'd love to figure out just what level of cousins we all are. I'm having so much fun with this family line, I wish my father had any info on his family! good luck,
D'arcy

Lori,

I have been researching the Clinchard family for a long time, and every Clinchard in the United States that I have found is descended from Martin Bruno Clinchard. For example, on Ancestry.com Social Security Death Index, I entered Clinchard with no first name, no other information. I have been able to fit every exact match displayed into the Martin Bruno Clinchard descendents. So I guess we are related!

I am a descendent of Charles William Clinchard. His son, William Charles Clinchard (my grandfather) went to Puerto Rico in 1903 as a civil engineer to build roads. He soon sent for his mother and his sister. I have 3 cousins - one in Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas. Only two are men that carry the Clinchard name. Between them they had 5 boys, so there will be more Clinchards!

I am currently trying to find the ship MBC came on from France, and if Caroline Schmitt came with him, or if he met her in New Jersey. I have a copy of his petition for US Citizenship dated March 28, 1839 so I believe he came between 1835 and 1839. I have a copy of his Citizenship Certificate dated October 7, 1844. I also have a copy of his marriage record to Caroline Schmitt on May 24, 1840 in the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newark, NJ. If you want copies, let me know. My email is smaas@msn.com.

In addition, I have written to Toulon in the Province of Var in France to see if I could get information on his birth, and perhaps his parents, but they said they could not help me. I will keep trying!

Sharon

I always wondered why I have never (in my entire forty years of life!) met another Clinchard in person. In looking at the list you give, I'm thinking that it's because Jacob Francois was the only one to go West. I know he and Elsie Balbach had many children, but as far as I know the only one of them to continue West was my great grandfather Frederick Balbach Clinchard, who moved to Alameda, CA, in the SF Bay Area. And then since he had only one son and one daughter, and that son had only one son and one daughter...it's come to pass that my three brothers and I are the only Clinchards we know!

I've always wondered why there are so few Clinchards anyway. MBC couldn't have been the only one to come to the US, surely?!

Hi D'arcy,

How great to hear from you! It sounds like we come from the same ancestors - Martin Bruno Clinchard and Caroline Schmidt. My records have MBC coming from somewhere in the vicinity of Toulon, and bringing his wife Caroline (Alsace Lorraine) to Newark New York. I have that they had 6 children, one of whom was Jacob Francois, born in 1841. However, I have that he married Elsie Balbach of Carlsruhe, Germany, and that they moved to Bloomfied, New Jersey, where they had 11 children. I am then descended from one of these 11, a son named Frederic Balbach Clinchard, born in 1881, who then married (another German woman!) Elsie Honnoff of Omaha, Nebraska....I won't continue into the present, since this isn't your line of the family.

I can't help with any information on Martin Bruno's parents or on Caroline's, although I should have done some research the year I was a foreign exchange student in France! Unfortunately, I was young enough not to think of it, and too poor to be able to travel around! Oh well! I do still keep in touch with two families there, and so maybe I'll make it back. If you have any info confirming the towns they came from, that would be great.

Thanks,

Lori

D'arcy -

I am also a descendent of Martin Bruno Clinchard (1815) who married Caroline Schmitt in 1840 in New Jersey. He came from Toulon, France. She came from Alsace-Lorraine. They had 6 children - Jacob Francois, Bruno Henri, Marie Louise, Caroline, Charles William, and Ellen Cecilia. I am a descendent of Charles William, but I think you are a descendent of Bruno Henri Clinchard, born 27 Sep 1843 in New Jersey.

Bruno Henri Clinchard married Jennie Elizabeth Joralemon 28 May 1865 in Newark, New Jersey. They had 4 children - Martin Bruno, Jennie (died at age 2), another Jennie, and Jacob Franklin Clinchard, who I think is your great-grandfather. He was the one who married Anna B. Schieder 20 Sep 1908 in Newark, New Jersey. I believe Anna's parents were from Germany.

Vivian Janet Clinchard married John (Jack) Sommer. They had two children, Janice Elizabeth Sommer (1930) and Helen Verpillier Sommer (1937).

Hope this helps!

Sharon Maas

I have a half brother and sister.Their father is Randy Mc Coy.
However,THEIR NAMES ARE: Randy L. Erhard and Candy L.
Erhard. I noticed on one family tree or genealogy that RANDY
L. ERHARD was listed as the son of Ernest E. Erhard JR. ...
that is wrong. SIS (Candy) was not listed at all.
...I guess that because my mother's name was still ERHARD at the time and my mother did not marry RANDY
Mc Coy... they are truly (a pun on words ) ... real Mc Coys.
...That's enough data for now... .

Hello. I just went back to my papers and found the name of my great-great grandpa, who was also a son of Martin Bruno, and it was Jacob Francois C., born in 1841 in Newark, New Jersey. I was told that MBC brought his wife Caroline Schmidt here to the US, and also that his family came from the Toulon area of France.

Hi! I don't think I'll help you much, but I was happy to see the name of Martin Bruno Clinchard, since I'm also a descendant of his, but through a different child. I don't have the papers before me, but I think it's through a sibling named Francois (then Frederic, Frederic, and Robert, my father). I actually spent a year in France, but didn't yet have this information and didn't do any searching. Do you know any more about Martin Bruno or Caroline? I seem to have a vague memory that he was from the south of France, and that she may have been from the Alsace-Lorraine region. Does this ring any bells? Do you know if they met here or there? Thanks! Lori Clinchard-Sepeda (Taos, NM)

D'arcy,

I'm glad the information was useful to you!

I am descended through William Charles Clinchard (b. 10 Nov 1880 in New Jersey) and his wife Carmen Colon (b. 06 Feb 1895 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico). They were married 06 Oct 1916 in Puerto Rico. William Charles Clinchard came to Puerto Rico about 1903 as a Civil Engineer to design new roads in Puerto Rico. They had 2 children - William Charles Clinchard Jr. and Jeannette Clinchard, my mother. William Charles Sr. died in Coamo, Puerto Rico 23 Jun 1951. William Charles Jr. was born 18 Jul 1917 and died 08 May 2003 in Puerto Rico. My mother was born 11 July 1920, and died in California 4 April 1963.

The dates you have for Alice Elizabeth Gelpke are the same as those I have.

I am very interested in the information you have on Caroline Schmitt's parents! I have no information on them! Do you know where they were born and/or died?

Thank you for your help!

Sharon Maas

Jayne,
According to records my father left me, I am a descendent of Martin Bruno Clinchard who married Caroline Schmitt in Newark, New Jersey in 1840. They had 6 children. My line extends from their 5th child, Charles William Clinchard. His sister, Marie Louise Clinchard, was their second child born November 25, 1844 in Newark. She married Jacob Erhardt June 12, 1864. He was born in New York City in 1838, and died in Irvington, New Jersey in 1914. They had three children, Frank, Mary Cecilia, and Edward Fredrick. Is this your line? I would be very interested in exchanging information with you xia email!

Jayne,
Thanks for the reply! According to my records, Jacob's son, Edward Frederick Erhard, was born October 20, 1879 in Irvington, New Jersey. He married Wilhemina Beck about 1900. They had 4 children, Elsie, Edward Jacob Erhard Jr., Hazel, and Beatrice. Edward Jacob Erhard, Jr. was born August 06, 1904 in Newark, New Jersey. Could this be your husbands Grandfather? Maybe the Edward Fredrick (by my records) was also known as Edward Jacob Sr.! Do any of the birth dates match your records?
My email is smaas@msn.com.
Thanks!
Sharon

Hi Lori, I found your notes on an old message board
and am thrilled! My great grandfather was Jacob
Clinchard, son of Martin Clinchard. My notes have
Jacob married to Anna Schieder and their offspring as
Stuart Clinchard (my Grandfather) and his sister
Vivian (who married Jack I don't know who). My
Grandmother's notes have Martin married to a Joralenan
with a question mark. Does this mean anything to you?
Also I don't know Anna Scheider's parents names. Do
you Know Martin's parents names? Oh, My Mother Enid is
Stuart Gordon Clinchard's daughter (one of four
children). Anyway, nice to meet you, it'd be fun to
figure out how we are related. My name is D'arcy
Noyer Russell Madden (1963) and I was born to Enid
Susan Clinchard Russell (1943) and Enos Louis Russell,
Jr(1940) and I have a brother Corbin Clinchard
Russell, (1972)

Sharon, how fun! There is a page in my folder with a lot of question marks with a handwritten note that says "Puerto Rican Branch of the family". Thankyou!
OK
Gotthardt Schmitt, b.? d.Jan 11, 1855 married Barbara ?, b. March 1784 and d. June 7, 1870. I have that they had two children, Louise and Caroline. Fleishman and produced four children; William, George, Charles and Fred.

It's not much but I just started yesterday and I am hopeful. I'll foward more as I find it along with any pictures that pertain to your branch.
Thanks again,
D'arcy Noyer Russell Madden
