I was perusing the RootsWeb.com message boards in a desperate attempt to find information on my grandfather Orel Henry Erk (1911-1965). What you described in a 2000 message to Nancy Veillon described exactly what happened to my father Richard Erk. My father, Richard, and his sisters and brother were ditched by his mother and grew up in the Fort Wayne Children’s Home, only my father had to stay because he was an Erk and his sisters and brother were Noll. My grandmother’s sister took them in. My father spent his life in the children’s home until his father came to get him when he turned 16. Orel took my dad to Lima, Ohio, with him. Only things didn’t work out. My father joined the Navy, then came back to Fort Wayne. His dad died shortly after I was born. My dad never had much of a relationship with his dad. Orel owned and operated a tavern in Lima, Ohio. He died at age 53 in 1965 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima, Ohio.
I’ve been trying to track his side of the family to no avail. My mother has told me that Orel Henry Erk remarried and had another family. Could your Orel Henry Erk be his son? Another step-brother passed away, too, if I’m not mistaken.
However, I’m unable to find the original Orel Henry Erk’s father in any records. His mother was Gladys Shane and her father was Phineas Shane. Orel Henry Erk lived with his grandfather in the 1920 census. I’ve tracked Phineas Shane one more generation, but that doesn’t help me with Orel’s father. Can you help in any way?
Thank you so much for any help or light you can shed on this genealogy search.
