Erskine - Campbell

Looking for any information pertaining to the families of Matilda Erskine married to John Campbell (born abt 1835 Northern Ireland) on March 14, 1859 they had 6 children. John born (1865-May-2-Crumlin, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Jane born (Aug-2-1867-Crumlin, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Alexander born (Jan-16-1870-Crumlin, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Erskine born (Aug-2-1867-Crumlin, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Samuel born (Apr-20-1874-Crumlin, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Sarah born (Jun-16-1877-Killead, Antrim, Northern Ireland); Hugh born (Apr-4-1880-Dungonnel, Antrim, Northern Ireland). I do know that Hugh came over to Ontario Canada sometime before 1918 and became a commercial fisherman on Lake Ontario as he was married to Elizabeth ???? (I think Flynn) and had my father John born (Jan-29-1919 Port Whitby, Ontario, Canada) and also my uncle Erskine born (Jan-13-1922 Port Whitby, Ontario Canada). Also found through records, where John (Hugh`s older brother) came over to Ontario Canada and was also a commercial fisherman, as he died in Toronto, Ontario Hospital Feb-2-1926 and was buried in Port Whitby, Ontario, Canada. I seem to have hit a brick wall though and any information to this family would be greatly appreciated. I am the gggrandson of William and Jane, ggrandson of John and Matilda, grandson of Hugh, son of John. Thanks John Campbell Ontario Canada. I would certainly love to know more about the family and would be happy to hear from Lorraine if she is interested. My email is nanvose@hotmail.com If Lorraine could email me directly with whatever she may wish to share, that would be excellent. I would be delighted to share what I have about Elizabeth McKinna's marriage and that line down to today. I doubt that I have much that would be of value to Lorraine's research prior to Agnus McKinna and Wm. Erskine, but all connections are helpful, I find. Thanks again, n

Erskine/Askey DNA Project Created

Project description:

The derivation of one line of surname Askey is from Thomas Erskine (1727-1807). Erskine's father was born in Scotland and moved to Antrim, Northern Ireland around 1700. Erskine moved to North America around 1742 (Maryland) and settled in Pennsylvania. His name was changed to Aspey and Askey on official records and military documents. The Askey name stuck although one of Thomas Erskine/Askey's sons (William) reclaimed the Erskine name in Pennsylvania and his descendants moved west throughout North America and Canada. Another variation: Askay, was created in the 1800s in Ohio.

This group is open to all similar surnames and will attempt to differentiate based on yDNA markers and Haplogroups. Also, several different surnames are close matches to the Thomas Erskine/Askey line and are welcome to join so that we can determine the history behind the various surnames.

The initial project administrator is Andy Askey who is a descendant of Thomas Erskine/Askey. The projected is hosted at the FTDNA site and can be found by searching for the surname Erskine.

Sam & Maggie

There are many errors about them. The 1900 census has Sam arrivng in 1873 and Maggie in 1868. Marriage record have them marring in Mich. 8 Aug 1878, the same day their eldiest daughter (Jane) was born. No child was born aboard ship and they weren't married in Scotland. Sam's birth date varies from 1846 to 1854 but the family bile lists it as 1846. Sam's mother is listed as Jean (Jane) Mclew in the bible but can be McClumpha or Morrel. I have been led to understand Mclew and McClumpha are the same. Maggie name has many spellings with McMIllian and McMIllen most common. She would have been 22 when arriving from Scotland. Was she traveling alone or with family. 1860's 70's alone? Didn't marry till 1878? Need to find out if McMillian was a married name and Sam is a second husband. Jane may be the child of this possible first husband and could explain why she was born the day Sam and Maggie got married. Keep getting more questions and fewer answers.

Carol, I have a picture of Kate Alma Erskine. Notes on the back say she was born, 7 November 1872; Died circa 1919; married 10 September 1902 to Elmer C. Dewey. The picture is of her at about 25 years of age in a black and white studio portrait, taken in Barre, Vermont. I would like to see the picture in the hands of her direct line family but can also post it to anyone interested.
Roy Erskine Seattle WA

I am looking for information on Roy Erskine that lived in the Seattle area around the turn of the century. I have found a family that I think he belongs to, but not enough information. My great great grandmother, Tessa Lelia Collins Depew, divorced and remarried sometime between 1910 and 1920. But I cannot find them living together in a single census. In the 1923 city directory she lists herself as Tessa Erkine, living on Dawson St, Seattle, and in the 1930 Census there is a W in the married or single column. I find a Roy living with his parents, a Royal and Ellen Erkine, from MA in the Seattle area, and then with his brother Fred. In Tessa death record, she lists her spouse as Roy. She passed in 1935 in King County. I know very little else. She had a special needs child, Edith that would have been living with her. Had a son, Hubert who was in area, and two other daughters also from her first marriage, Blanch and Celia. I am trying to solve this mystery. In the WA digital archives, I cannot find a marriage record either, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is! Although not as far back as the information I'm researching: My paternal grandmother married a J. P. Senuta (prior to my grandfather)and they had a son whom was named after his father. I was never told what exactly happened to him, whether it was a divorce or death, but my grandparents both raised my uncle and I didn't even know he had a different last name until I was in my teens...lol.

The Elisabeth we have was married to Robert McKinna on 9 Aug 1833, she was born 3 Nov 1807 in Penninghame and died 28 Jul 1882 in Newton-Stewart. They had about 10 kids. My wife's line is William McKinna. I can go back 2 more generations if my research is correct. It would be great if we could share more information via email.

Regards,
Alan

I have no connection to any of these families. I just keep finding interesting little “tidbits” that give our ancestors a personality instead of just a name with d.o.b. and d.o.d. OR it may just give you date(s) you didn't already have. This is from the Rockland (Maine) Gazette dated July 9, 1873:

"Capt. Andrew J. Erskine has a moderate-sized 'patch' of srawberry vines which he estimated will yield four bunches of strawberries this season."

I have no connection to this family but found the following in my research.

From Rockland, Maine Courier Gazette of September 18, 1883 in the column called Men and Women. This column was similar to the "society page so the family had to have been of some consequence to be in here.

"Miss Carrie Erskine started for the west last week. She will be absent several months, visiting her brother in Chicago and relatives in Bloomington, Ind."

I then looked up in my "Vital Records of Rockland, Maine" book to see who Carrie's brother might be. The only Carrie I could find had siblings that would have been too young (family of A.J. Erskine), but I DID find a Carrie (Allen) Erskine (wife of Arnold D. Erskine). Don't know if that helps . . .

If I can find some info for you, I will do what I can, just because you're an Erskine. Coincidently, I'm in Chicago at the moment but will be going home to County Down, next week. Do you have a townland name that your relative came from or a parish name? The McCready name also has a Scottish heritage.
James Erskine

I am tracing this line too. According to the LDS site James Erskine's birthdate was 25 July 1757. That site also lists 11 children for them. Apparently 2 died in infancy. His will mentions 9 children: William, James, Martha Dobbins (my ancestor), Nancy Lowe, Polly Shirley, Margaret Shirley (She had apparently died leaving a son, James E. Shirley. His father was Aaron), John, Thomas, and Hugh. The SC Archives website has a transcript of his will. I have a copy of his obit if you are interested. I haven't been able to trace this line back any farther.
