Scott,

I don't have much time, and tried to figure out what my email address was and to possibly correct/change it. At any rate, my email addy is kjstrattan@charter.net, so if you type that in that should work. It appears we have some discrepancies, I'd rather just email you back than post. Please email me and we'll see if we can get everything on the same page.

Cheers,
-ks

To be clear, I will put out some more information in an attempt to be sure we are speaking of the same people. These were all residents of the Watertown, Wisconsin area. Emma Tietz was my grandmother and they were probably married at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Watertown. Emma Tietz married Francisco (Frank) Ertl and they had two children. One of Emma's children was Clarence who married Carlotta Witte. Clarence had no children. Emma's other child was Alice (Still alive at 97) and she married Allen Wright and had one child Bennett Chatterton (Bucky)Now dead. Alice then married Charles Regnier Davis Jr. and had 2 more children - Jay Regnier and Scott Ertl (Me).

Here is where your and my information seems to diverge. BTW, my information is from my memory of what Alice told me. Johann (Alice thought it was John) Ertl was a postman in Bohemia. He came to Watertown and married (I believe) a woman named Schultz or some similar German surname. The Ertls (I believe) were Catholic and belonged to St. Henry's Catholic Church in Watertown. Johann and (Schultz) had several boys (We have pictures of them as adults)Some of the boys names were Henry, Rudolph, John. I could do better with some review and thought. There were no girls that I was aware of. When Schultz died Johann married Caterina Homolka and bore Johann's last child, my Gfather Frank. My mother thought that the church record was incorrect at St. Henrys and reflected that Frank was born of the (Schults) mother instead of the Homolka.

I hope this is not too confusing or inaccurate. I tried your email yesterday but it bounced back.
How do you fit into this?

Thanks - Scott

Hello,

Actually, Caterina Homolka had 3 sons and 2 daughters with Johann Ertl, and 3 sons and 3 daughters with Katherine Kaspar. I have little on Frank, do you know where he was born? Also I have his wife being Emma Tietz but know nothing about her, and do you know where they were married? I didn't have any of their children, so whatever you can fill in would be great.

As for the other direction, I did not know that about Johann. In fact I didn't have any notes on him at all, just some facts on emigration, etc... Do you know of any siblings Johann had, and do you know when and where his parents died?

Would love to share notes, feel free to email me if you wish, my email address is still current on Ancestry.com if you look me up.

Hello,

I just read some of the forum entries made back in 2000 concerning Ertl's. I am descended, as far as I can tell, from a Johann Wenseslaus Ertl from Lauterbach Bohemia. Johann, according to my mother, was a postman in Bohemia and left Bohemia arriving in Watertown Wisconsin. In Watertown, he took a wife, had around 4 boys before she died. He took another wife, my GGmother Catherina Homolka, also from Bohemia and had one more son (Francisco or Frank Ertl) my Gfather in 1879. Is there anything else you can tell me or I you?

Thanks - Scott Ertl Davis

Hi, My name is Diana Hensley. My mom's name was Mary Theresa Ertl. She was born in 1927, but I have very little info on her. I think she was from Wisconsin, and had several siblings. She was sick when I was very young and I lost track of all of her family.
Does anyone have any info on her?
Thanks

Family of Edward Christl Ertl

I'm trying to trace my family but am unable to find information on my father, Edward Ertl, born Munich (?) Germany around 1907. His mother's name was Franziska Ertl, born Franziska Christl, February 21, 1872 in Munich, Germany. My father may have come to Canada around 1937. He died in Montreal, Canada in 1961. I believe he had up to seven brothers in Germany. His mother lived in Munich until about 1952-1953 and came to Canada. I have no memory if she died in Montreal or went somewhere else. Thanks for any help you can give.
Stefan Ertl

My name is Nicole and I recently got in touch with someone with the first and last name as me. We were trying to figure out if we were related.

Her family:

Her father, Otto Ertl (which is the same as my father's name but not related) was born in Graz, Austria in 1929 and graduated with an engineering degree from Graz University. He was the youngest of four children (Rudolf - a pilot in the military went MIA, Henry Ertl - died when he was in his mid 70's and her father Otto Ertl). Her grandfather, Franz Joseph Ertl was born quite wealthy - his father owned quite a few Villa's at various train stations throughout Europe(he spoke 6 or 7 languages). When her father was very young he was living in a Castle (now an insane asylum) and had cooks and maids to look after him. her grandfather loved to gamble and drink and eventually lost everything handed down to him from his Father. He left my grandmother (and his children) and her grandmother became ill with Cancer (Colon Cancer is our family illness). She was sent to a hospital and the children were sent to a foster family (a doctor and his wife took all of them). her grandmother eventually became well enough to get her children back so her father and his siblings moved back with her in a small apartment in Graz. She was never well again and after she passed away her father came to Canada - he was only 21.

Her Grandmother, was Austrian but was born in Kosice (was Hungary pre 1914) now Slovakia. The family was there since the Great Grandfather was stationed there as a 'Sir' (von Koechel) and Colonel in the Artillery. That is about the only connection we have with Hungary. They moved back after the tour of duty there to Graz.

My side of the Family:

After speaking with my Great Aunt (Mari) she shared some information that sounded very familiar, she spoke of Tirol/Tyrol where my Great Aunt's father (Ferenc Ertl) was born had a brother, Otto Ertl she also mentioned her father had a sister name Manci and Rosza and her father’s father served in the war, stationed in Tirol.

My father's (Otto Ertl 1958-2008) grandparents were Elizabeth (maiden name being Pandovski) and Frank Ertl, they were from Tyrol/Tirol.

If anyone can help to fill in the blanks that would be much appreciated
My parents were John Mulvanny and Dolores Ertl. Dolores was the daughter of George Joseph Ertl b. 12/24/1892 and Mathilda Ritzinger who lived on 24th and Cherry St. in Milwaukee. They were parisioners at St. Michael's Church where I was christened and where my parents were married.

George Joseph Ertl's father was Ferdinand Ertl who was married to Theresa Strasser. George Joseph Ertl was a first cousin (once removed) of your George Ertl born 8/4/1903.

It's somewhat confusing, but the fathers of George Joseph Ertl (my grandfather, whose father was Ferdinand Ertl) and your George b. 1903, (whose father's name was also George) were brothers; sons and two of the seven children of Franz Ertl and Francisca Albrecht.

I hope this helps to clarify things somewhat. If you want to give me your phone number, I'd be happy to give you a call. I can also send you some of my files electronically if you'd like. My phone number is (951) 698-0601. I hope to talk with you very soon.

Sincerely,
Red Mulvanny

I sent this to your daughter Brandy earlier today.

Brandy:

I sure hope your e-mail address is still the same so that you can receive this!!!

I know it’s been nearly three years since your last e-mail, but I have recently been working on the Ertl side of my family and I am almost 100% certain that there IS a connection between you and I.

Based on my research, I have the following information:

Your father George Ertl was one of four children born to George Ertl and Sophie (Sophia) Schuster. I got the name Sophia Schuster from the Wisconsin Marriage Index which lists marriages prior to 1907. It could have been mis-recorded and could in fact be Schwiester. They were married in Milwaukee on 10/13/1896 in Milwaukee. Actually your Dad was a George III since his Dad and grandfather were both named George. I have his DOB as 8/4/1903 according to the Wisconsin Births Index from 1820-1907 database. His siblings were Anton George “Tony” Ertl DOB: 11/13/1986, DOD: 4/10/1963, Catherine Ertl DOB 1910-1911, DOD Unknown and Henry G. Ertl DOB: 11/27/1913, DOD: 10/21/1980. My research indicates your Dad passed away in November of 1987 in East Troy, Walworth Co, WI. I do not have any information on his first or third wife, but I do have some sketchy information on his second wife Marie and their son Tony that I got from the 1930 Census, so anything you can provide will be helpful. In 1930, your Dad, Marie and son Tony lived on 55th and Congress in Wauwatosa and your Dad was working as a Filling Station Attendant. In 1920, he was working as a Garage Helper.

I have also located records on Tony (Anthony G. Ertl) that lists his DOB as 1/4/1922 and DOD in June, 1977.

According to my calculations, your Dad and I were 2nd cousins once removed.

I would appreciate any and all information you have on your branch of the Ertl family. If you would be willing to discuss any of this over the phone, please provide your phone number and I will give you a call. I’m assuming you live in WI. I was born in Milwaukee, but after a career in the U.S. Navy, I retired in California. My phone number here is (951) 698-0601.

I will be in Milwaukee in September to do some genealogy research and would love to meet with you if possible.

Sincerely,
Robert J. “Red” Mulvanny

Possible Ertl Link

We don't have a link to your Josef Ertl Born in 1843, but I can tell you this much: We have a Johann Ertl born June 24, 1814 in Litomysl, Bohemia (part of Austria). I don't have ANY of his siblings, so it is possible that one of his brothers is Josef's Father?!?!? Johann Ertl's father was Wenseslaus M. Ertl born on October 08, 1783 in Lauterbach 159, Bohemia and married to Anna Harich who was born on April 28, 1788 in Lauterbach, Bohemia. If you are able to link with Wenseslaus I would be very interested in your genealogy!

Also if you can link with Wenseslaus then I can give you his ancestors back to Simon Ertl born about 1665 at Oegna on the Danube, Bohemia. Good luck and I hope we can link our family branches!

Yes - possibly a connection. I just found out recently when viewing my mother and fathers marriage cert. that this was his third marriage. 2# wife was a Marie Rash/Rush with one son from this marriage, Anthony Ertl. 1# wife is still unknown to me. Cherry street sounds right. We lived on 20th and Cherry and the church was were my father was an alter boy is the same. George Jr., my father was born 8-4-04 does this sound familiar to you? His mother was Sophia Schwiester and father George Sr. All buried at Holy Cross part of Calvary cemetery, I believe. I do have more dates if this is sounding correct to you. Hope to hear back soon it's been a long search to find any Ertl's.

I know exactly what you mean because I had a similar
problem with my mom's side of the family. Her father
(my grandfather) came from Germany but no one knew from
what city. After 5 years I found it. Needless to say I was on
cloud nine for a long time.

Does anyone have any letters or copies of letters written by
a relative? That is where I found a clue.

My dad's mother was a Theresa Ertl. Her dad's name was Valentine Ertl and they came from Weyscheid, Germany and settled in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Theresa married August
Tautges in Sheboygan and later moved to Aniwa, Wisconsin.
That is where I was born and raised.

Theresa was born in 1871 and I would assume that her
father Valentine Ertl was born about 1850. Valentine's wife
was Anna Rachinger.

Let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Florence Barwick
14778 W.
Hi! I came across your post while doing a search for the BESL surname. My GrGrandpa was Frank Joseph BESL, b 1868 in Germany and died 1936 in OH. Family tradition says that Frank stowed away on a ship and came to America to escape the Kaiser's Army. He is said to have had a brother George and a brother John. One settled in WI and the other in NY (not sure which is which). I can not find a town in Germany the BESL's might have come from and I have not found him on a ships list. This line has been a brick wall for me for at least 10 years. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Paula

Am searching for information on Ertls from the Graz, Austria area. I believe my great-grandmother, Mary Ertl, came to America in the late 1800s or early 1900s. She married a Julius Keller and had 6 children. I have been told that Mary's father was killed/committed suicide in Austria and was well off at one time. Mary's mother came to America first, then sent for Mary and her two sisters. One of her sisters was named Pauline, and I believe she settled somewhere in Texas and is probably married. Any information would be appreciated!
Thanks much,
Tricia Keller
