Jared ERVINE b. abt 1730 Pendleton Co., VA FATHER EDWARD ERWIN???

Can anyone prove or disprove that Jared Erwin (Ervine) b. abt 1730 in Pendleton County, VA who married Elizabeth, daughters Agnes Nancy who married John Morgan Armstrong and Elizabeth who married William Armstrong was or was not Edward Erwin's son??? Edward b. 1669 in Ulster, Ireland, died 1772 in Longglade Creek, Augusta County, VA. I've seen info that Edward is Jared's father and I'd love for that to be so, but I wonder if anyone out there has proof, either way. Thanks!

Re: Ervine names

How right you are. My great-great-grandfather was Philip Irwin, and he settled in Marion County, West Virginia about 1850 or so. Sometime in the 1870's the spelling of the name was changed to Erwin (possibly because there was another Erwin family in the area and someone decided only one spelling was correct). When searching cemetary records, however, his name was listed as Irvin. Basically one must account for many variations in spelling, including reversal of letters (for example, in his daughter's death record her father is listed as Philip Ewrin).

We don't know where my grandfather's grandfather came from, and there is little information on the family before he came to be my gggrandfather. I know the scattered details I have been told ny my granfather. Their name used to be Irving or Irvin or Ervin?? and some one was out to kill my gggrandfather, and he moved away from where ever he was to where ever he ended up and changed his name to Serrano. My grandfather was born in Ray, Arizona (which from what I have been told is just a hole in the ground now, due to a mine calapse). My grandfather's mother and father's names were: Leonardo Serrano Isabelle Telles. They had together five children: Lucy, Leonardo Jr., Nayo??, and Mary Lou. If anyone has anymore infor for me please help.

There are over 250 spellings of Ervine, including Irving, Irwin, Erwin, Urwyne. They are all the same clan, and you can find info. in most Scottish clan books under one of the spellings. There is a coat of arms, in which the major symbol is a sheaf of holly leaves. The motto translates in English as "Flourishing in sunlight and in shade. You also may want to check into general books on Scottish history (the Irwine clan ruled Scotland for a couple of centuries). There is also a Clan Irwin association that you can join. Good luck with your hunting!
