WASHINGTON, Iowa -- Ina Erwin, 87, of Washington, formerly of West Liberty, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the United Presbyterian Home, Washington, following an extended illness.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jeanne Koughn will officiate. Burial will be at North Prairie Cemetery, West Liberty.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian Home, North Prairie Social Club or Lotus Chapter No. 320 Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Erwin was born on Nov. 21, 1914, in West Liberty, the daughter of George and Laura Mae Inghram Askam. She married Donald Erwin on Nov. 5, 1939, in Nashua. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, North Prairie Social Club and a 55-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Hudson and her husband, Dan, of Iowa City; a son, Don Erwin and his wife, Lyla, of Washington; eight grandchildren, Michelle Harney and her husband, Rick, Bill Hudson and his wife, Diane, Tony Hudson and his wife, Tina, Eric Erwin, Erin Erwin, Tanner Erwin, Adam Erwin and Lauren Erwin; and three great-grandchildren, Tim, Tom and Ryan Harney.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Inghram Askam; and a sister, Evelyn Meyers.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Mavis J. Erwin, 74, Muscatine, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Unity Hospital.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Lief Pohl will officiate. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. After the burial, a time of fellowship will be held at the American Legion.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the Iowa City Hospice.

Mrs. Erwin was born on Aug. 26, 1927, in Brideport, Texas, the daughter of Jesse and Etta Richardson Dethloff. She married Ray Erwin on Nov. 8, 1945, in Brideport. He preceded her in death in 1998.

She worked at Thatcher Glass, retiring after 21 years of service.

She enjoyed traveling, crafts, bingo, fishing and loved to play the slot machines. She had an extensive collection of spoons and thimbles

Survivors include two sons, Jess Erwin and his wife, Kathy, of Muscatine and Kenneth Erwin and his wife, Rita, of Ocala Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Hahn and her husband, Jerald, and Tooter Philpott and her husband, Bob, all of Muscatine; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Gewan Dethloff of California; two sisters, Barbra Reese of Kansas and Ita Petty of Texas; and two special friends of Hospice, Bonnie Reeb and Tonya Halstead.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a special friend, Lloyd Strause Sr.

Mr. Erwin was born May 4, 1920, in West Liberty, the son of Walter and Olive Erwin. He married Millicent N. Allicks Jan. 14, 1942, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death Aug. 27, 1996.

He was a machine operator for the Alcoa Company, Davenport Works, retiring in 1985 after nearly 30 years of service.

He had attended Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf and was a former member of the Aluminum, Brick & Glassworkers Union, Local No. 105.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Jennifer Smith of Bettendorf; a grandson, Jim Shaffer of Davenport; a brother, Lewis Erwin and wife Aline of West Liberty; and a son-in-law, Dan Shaffer of Moline, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his daughter, Shirleyann Shaffer Aug. 11, 1988; a sister, Ruth Miller; and two brothers, Ray Erwin and Don Erwin.

WAPELLO, Iowa -- Marcella Lorraine Erwin, 92, rural Wapello, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at her home after a brief illness.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Wapello. The Rev. Mary N. Pugh will officiate. Burial will be at Edwards Cemetery, Oakville.

Visitation is 6:30-8 p.m. today at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello.

Mrs. Erwin was born June 28, 1911, in Oakville, the daughter of Seth Everett and Johanna Edith Wykoff Gates. She married Samuel Robert Erwin May 13, 1933, in Kahoka, Mo.

She graduated from Oakville High School in 1928. She graduated from Western Illinois Teachers College in 1932 with degrees in math and Latin.

After her marriage, she and her husband farmed east of Wapello. Later in her life she moved to Wapello. She had owned and operated the Dairy Bar, both in Wapello and Mediapolis, and later the Hiway Pantry, Wapello. Then for more than 25 years she was the Louisa County Head Start coordinator, retiring at age 86. In her retirement, she lived in her cottage near the home of her daughter, Martha. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her friends and family.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wapello; the former Order of Eastern Star Chapter 257, Wapello, and currently the Emma Beckman Chapter 445 of the Order of Eastern Star, Columbus City; the Wapello Study Club; and the Chapter ET of P.E.O., Wapello.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Lorraine and Robert Hawk and Mary Edith Boysen and husband Larry, all of rural Wapello; six grandchildren, Aaron Boysen and wife Bambi, Duane Boysen and wife Jodi, Adam Boysen, Kedra Kroeger and husband Jeffrey and Jenna Hawk, all living locally, and Justin Hawk of Forrest Ranch, Calif.; and 12 great-grandchildren, Adair, Bay, Larame, Tate, Kale, Koby, Kabe and Sydney Boysen and Emma, Seth, Don and Megan Kroeger.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lillian Charbonneaux and Euvista Masterson.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2007, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Burial will be in the North Prairie Cemetery in West Liberty.

Mr. Erwin was born July 18, 1918, near West Liberty, the son of Walter and Olive Saurer Erwin. He married Aline Priest on April 14, 1943, in Reno, Nevada.
He was a graduate of West Liberty High School.
He worked in California as a welder in the shipyards during WWII and later operated a Union 76 service station in Oakland, Calif.
He moved back to West Liberty in 1957, when he purchased a farm. He and his wife farmed north of West Liberty for many years.
He served on the West Liberty School Board for several years and was involved with the building of the middle school.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Pam Erwin of Glen Rock, N. J.; two sons, Ron Erwin of Iowa City and Stan Erwin and his wife, Sue, of Burlington; three grandchildren, Kimberly Stacy, Stephanie Erwin and Joshua Erwin and his wife, Heidi; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.

I have a Robert ERWIN or IRWIN who married a Margaret WYLIE in Scotland or Northern Ireland during the latter 17th or early 18th Century.

They had at least one son, William (b. about 1700 in Scotland or Ireland, d. 12 May 1748 in Lancaster County, PA). William married Elender (MNU).

The issue of that marriage was James ERWIN (b. about 1740 in Lancaster PA, d. 1796 in Washington County, Tennessee).

Any information regarding Robert ERWIN (IRWIN), his wife, Margaret WYLIE, or any other members of that family will be very much appreciated.

I am trying to document the ancestors of Margaret Brandon, wife of Arthur Erwin. Her parents may have been John Brandon and Mary Cathey or Richard Brandon and Margaret Locke but I can find no source for her parents. She is buried next to Arthur in the Erwin Cemetery at Belvidere Plantation near Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. She may have been born in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Hi 3rd Cousin!

I am so glad you wrote! Is there a way to get copies of these papers without traveling to Texas? But if not, how far is that from Beaumont? My father has a house in Beaumont but is currently living in IL. Thank you for my gggrandparents names as I figured it had to be James but had no idea what his wife's name was.

My mother dearly loved her paternal grandparents, Mattie and Andrew. Her father was named James Erwin Smith after her father. Mom said that Mattie's father James used to own slaves. Also mom said Mattie told her that near the war's end, her father traded all his Confederate money in for gold and didn't tell his wife for fear she would tell and he had people, carpetbaggers I think, that came and hung him by the neck until his eyes bulged out trying to get him to tell where it was.

I didn't know he married his wife's sister though, I thought she just helped him raise the kids. I know that Mom said Mattie called her Aunt Sack (sp) but never talked like they married. Mom always talked like Mattie was very young and didn't really know her mom before she died. According to family stories, when Margaret was dying she sent all the boys fishing and kissed them goodbye. That always seemed like a "Gone with the Wind" scene to me.

I would love to know more about her family and my extended relatives. When Mattie married Andrew they moved to OH and then my grandparents moved to OK and then settled in IA. My mother passed away in 2007 and I have tried to recollect all the stories she told about her grandma to find out more about that side of her family.

Seeking information regarding James Erwin's birth, about 1761, probably in Orange or Ulster County New York. James died 11/26/1849 in New York City and was buried in New Hurley Reformed Church Ground: Town of Plattekill, Ulster County, New York.
James Erwin enlisted at Fort Montgomery in the State of New York in the Company Commanded by Captain Philip Carmine of the 3rd New York Regiment, - in the Spring of 1776.

James married first Jennetje Terwilliger and had at least 2 children (Elizabeth 1758-1854 and Lidia 1787-1846). He married next Elizabeth Millspough and had 4 children.

What age group are you looking at for your grandparents? I have a James Jackson Erwin married a Sarah E. Ghormley on 1-13-1888 in Madiosn County, AL. J.J. Erwin was born in 1823 and Sarah E. Ghormley was born 1830 but I don't have any children born of this marriage. J.J.'s first wife was the sister of Sarah's, Martha Jane Ghormley, born 1828 with man children. My ggrandfather was one of their children.

You might try starting with this information and working toward you to see if there is a relation. I've found the Erwin "Clan" have a way of naming their children for their ancestors.

I need to proof that he is my ggfather and my grandfather is his son. I have a census listing his mother in 1900 in TX with two siblings, and Bettie is listed as a widow. In 1910 Bettie is living with my grandfather James E. Erwin in TX.

I was given family pictures from my Erwin ancesty by a great aunt in the late 1960's. Some of the people I have not found a relationship so I am seeking the Erwin researchers help.

Picture - Husband and wife pose - sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Name on the back of the post card size photo - J. L. Fairchild, Dollburg, Ohio or Okla - 5 mi west of Reffanta?.

Picture - another photo of J. L. Fairchild and family. This time they are setting in a Model T with a young boy, being held by the man.

I have a Lucy V. M. Sanford b. abt 1855 AL, married to a John W. Erwin. I know this part of my family lived in Clayton, Navada Co, AR for a while before the 1900's. I'm not sure who John's parents are at this time. My ggrandfather was Lucy's brother-in-law, George E. Erwin. His son and my father's father ended up in Corsicana, Navarro Co., Texas., James Emmitt Erwin. Any relation?

Wanda, I just noted a dated posting regarding the Erwin ancestry line. I just recently got back into researching my Erwin line of the family, in fact I'm researching now in Huntsville, Madison Co, AL at this moment. My online research was very confusing from my grandfather's side but now it is clear. I'm from the TX Erwin's. Grandfather - James Emmitt Erwin, ggrandfather George E. Erwin, gggrandfather James Jackson Erwin.

If you can add information to help me out on my research it will greatly be appreciated.

Hello distance relative.

My ggrandfather was the brother of Mattie, his name was George E (Emmitt) Erwin. Their dad was James Jackson Erwin and mother was Margaret J. Ghormly Erwin. Apparently Margaret became ill and after her death married her sister.

I'm visiting in Huntsville, AL at this time, where this group of Erwin's lived and just photo copied James two marriage certificates today. I also have a copy of Mattie's marriage license to Andrew Smith, dated 14 Nov. 1887.

Look at the 1880 US Census for Madison Co., AL. My line of the family left AL to AR to TX. I received a group of family papers from a great aunt and I have placed these papers for safe keeping for other Erwin and Sanford researchers to view at the Panhandle Plains Museum in Canyon, TX. Just ask for the "Erwin" papers. You will be able to see the hand writing of Mattie and her relatives within family letters.'

Robert/Elizabeth are my g-g-g-grandparents.

Robert Erwin (also found Irwin) &
Elizabeth WALLACE ERWIN. Robert & Elizabeth were both born in 1804 in
Westmoreland Co., PA. (Word of mouth states Robert with 2 other brothers
came to OH bet. 1815 & 1820; Robert went to Scioto Co., ond went to Jackson
Co., OH & one to Kentucky.
Robert & Elizabeth Erwin, were married in Adams Co., OH (record is
listed Irwin), 2 Nov 1825.
Robert & Elizabeth WALLACE Erwin purchased property 4 Feb 1836
(Deed-Vol H, pg 491) and recorded 12 May 1836 in Scioto Co., OH (town was
Harrisonville, Madison Twp., Scioto Co., OH which is now called Minford,
Madison Twp., Scioto Co., OH). The deed stated Robert & Elizabeth of
Lawrence Co. (I assume OH).
Their children were:
Andrew, b abt. 1826, married POSSIBLY Callie STOCKHAM
Samuel W., 20 Sep 1828, married Nancy STOCKHAM
Margaret, b 15-18 Feb 1831, married John C. DODGE

My family doesn't know where the pic was taken but from the note on back it seems that it was sent to my aunt Maria from my dad. Don't know how he got it. His other brothers were not familiar with the picture but agreed it was their dad. They were not aware of your father in law, Gene -- they only knew of Donald and have kept in contact with him and his family. Donald was born in he early 20's. I havent talked to him yet...

I gather you don't have any wedding pictures of him and Edna?

Who is Gene's son or other family members? Are they interested in making contact with us?

Their daughter, Jane, married Daniel Oscar MILLER, son of Asa MILLER and step-son of Mary Ann (COON) MILLER 31 December 1857 in DeKalb County. Two of the daughters, Sarah and Eleanor IRWIN married Hiram J. COON. In the 1870 census the Hiram J. COON family and the Daniel O.
