My grandmother, Ysabel Escalante, was married to a Jesus Quintero before she married my grandfather. My dad had two half-siblings, brother Federico Quintero, who died at a young age and sister Juana Quintero who married a Trinidad Aguirre. Juana was born in Arizona and had children: Esperanza( b.8/21/1921-d.9/24/83) who married someone by the last name of Aquino. She was born in Arizona and died in California. Juan( b.3/8/25) born in Arizona, Jesus ( b.5/11/27-d.12/8/96 )Born in Arizona died in California, Ysabel (b.10/26/29), Francisca( b. 10/24/1930)and Federico ( b.2/15/34-d.6/28/34) born and died in Arizona. I believe Trinidad and Juana Aguirre moved the family to California. I am looking for anyone who might have information regarding our lost relatives. Please e-mail me at pinacolada_lg@hotmail.com if you can help.

Re: What is the literal meaning of "Escalante"?

It means ladder or to escalate...this is what I found when I was looking...my last name is Escalante too.

Recorded in many forms including Eschelle, Echelle, Deeschelle (French), Scala and Scalera (Italian), and Escala, Escalera, and Escalante (Spanish), this is a very interesting and aristocratic surname. However spelt it is of Roman (Latin) pre 4th century a.d. origins, and derives from the word 'scandere' meaning 'to climb'. Various directories suggest that the name was originally topographical for a person who lived in a village or house on a terraced slope, or one where the entry was by an outside ladder. Another suggestion is that the name was occupational and referred to a maker or seller of ladders, whilst a further suggestion is that it is a nickname for the only person in a village who possessed a ladder! Our opinion is that it is, or rather was, sometimes at least, a military term for a soldier who was responsible for the scaling ladders, which paid such a major part in all warfare in the ancient times before the use of firearms. This would seem to be confirmed by the coat of arms as recorded below, since this was granted for military deeds. Examples of the surname recording include Giovanni de la Scala, of Verona, Italy, a christening witness there on July 1st 1574, Juan de Escalante, who married Maria del Rio, at Santa Maria Magdalena, Valladolid, Spain on June 26th 1598, and Luis Echelle, christened at Notre Dame de L'esviers, Angers, France on June 4th 1737. The coat of arms granted in Spain, has the blazon of a red field, a gold ladder, bendwise. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roland Deeschelle, which was dated 1476, in the charters of the city of Lyon, France, during the reign of King Louis X1, of France, 1461 - 1483. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

I think I know who you are talking about. My grandfather is Pedro Catala Williams. He was born in April 10, 1910 in San Juan, PR. He had a sister that was names after his mother, Julia Catala Williams. Their mother Julia Williams was of African English descent, at least I was told. My granpa spoke with a very pronounce Castillian accent just like his father. My grandfather married many times, my grandmother being his last wife. He passed away in 1992 in the Dominican Republic from a heart attack. He and my grandma had 7 children. I know some of his other children, of whom all were born in PR. He live in DR from 1958- 1965. In '65 he went back to San Juan then moved to NYC in 1978. He was already fluent in English because of his mother. It's not a happy family history because my grandfather's mother left them when he was young, his father became a drunk and put my grandpa in an orphanage and sold Julia Catala as a servant (people actually did stuff like that). Let me know if you think this is the right person. The Catala side of the family goes back to Catalunya, Spain. Also, we spell our last name with an accent on the first a.

Hello,

My Grandmother was Antonia Escalante Masaferro. She was born in Bo. Pasto Viejo, Cayey, Puerto Rico, on Sep 25 1891

She had a sister name Josefa.

In my Grandmothers census from Ancestry under father place of birth it has Canary Islands

and I was told that his wife was Italian.

There is a large Escalante group that lived in Cayey, and I believe that her father may have been related to this group that came to Puerto Rico at an earlier date.

any small information is always welcome.

Regards.
Hello. I am looking for ESCALANTE relatives also. I thought the name of the town was TEMAX...but I see that you refer to TEKAX. I know the church was SAN MIGUEL ARCANGEL. My search is for JUANA ESCALANTE. Her mother was CIPRINA ESCALANTE. The date of birth for Juana would be about 1800-1810. Juana married ANTONIO B(V)ASQUEZ in 1824.

Carlos:
It´s a pleasure tu find a relative of the Escalante family and surprised it is in the US. I would be most excited if we could keep in contact to fill in on our common subjet.

Atentamente,
Tu pariente lejano,
Jose Enrique
