Yeah that's my line alright--I'm descended from Elizabeth and Michael McMahon. There's actually an Esker family book out there with all the descendancy information in it (up until the mid to late 1980s).

I think we are linked to the same Esker. I have found out that there are two Frank Eskers that were born roughly the same time in Germany that immigrated to the US. One ended up in Ohio and served in the Civil War, and the other to Illinois that we are descendants of.

Would you happen to have any photographs from that side of the family? Frank's son, George Bernard is my great-grandfather, and I am trying to find as many photographs as I can to add to my tree.

I know very little about this branch of my family tree and I would like to know more. I hope you can help me.
Hello I am the great-great granddaughter of Franz Esker (son of Ludwig Heinrich Esker). I own a lovely family history book including information on the descendants of Ludwig--could this be the history you are speaking of? It is titled "The Esker Family Tree 1802-1987 from Coesfeld, Germany to Bishop Creek, Effingham CO., Illinois"

Hello, my great-great grandfather's name was Francis B. (Franz) Esker. He was born in Coesfeld, Prussia on APril 26, 1845. He married Mary Catherine Stricker on June 29, 1875 in Bishop Creek, IL. He died in 1915 in Dieterich, IL. His wife was born on the Atlantic Ocean in 1846 and died in Dieterich, IL in 1925. They had 7 children.

Francis' parents were Ludwig Henrich and Maria Catharina Popping, who were both born in Coesfeld, and were also married there. Maria died there and is buried there as well. Ludwig remarried, but she died quickly, too. Afterwards, he and the children immigrated to Illinois, where many of the descendant remain.

I found no links to a Mathias Esker, however, if you have more names I'd be happy to check those, too.
I don't have the information you are looking for, but here is what I have (mostly regurgitated I'm afraid):

Her name is actually documented in our family book as 'Maria Catharina Popping'. Married May 5, 1835 (in another section it says April 5 instead of May 5); Born 1809 in Prussia; Died December 18, 1851 in Prussia. Married at St. Lamberts in Coesfeld. Buried in St. Lamberts in Coesfeld. Children: Heinrich, Elizabeth, Anton, Franz (who was my great-great grandfather), and Maria Catharina.

Ludwig married again after Maria's death, and this second wife died very soon. He and the children then immigrated to Illinois.

Frank Esker

I was wondering if anyone had additional family tree information regarding Frank Esker and his parents. His father was Gotlip Esker, and his mother was Mary J (unknown maiden name). I wish to find out more informaiton on him. I know that he was born in Germany around 1845 in Germany. He served in the Civil War in the Ohio infantry, and he died in Effingham County, Illinois. I am wondering if he is somehow related to Mathias Esker, or what his mother's maiden name was? If anyone can intersect their family tree with my mine I would surely appreciate the informaiton!

My grandmother Loretto Esker Hettel was the the sister of Clarence and Jerome. My Mother was Edna Hettel who was raised in Ohio but moved to Washington DC at sometime prior to 1945.(She was always vague about dates) I have a copy of the Ferdinand Esker family tree as compiled by Gene Esker in 1977. I have a quilt given to me by Katie Prince that had been made by Rosa Esker.

Be glad to help however I can. Katie Prince has a nephew named Jeff Boggan who is retired and has done a lot of work on tracing the Ward family history. His address is 114 Jamestowne Boulevard, Knoxville, TN 37922. The last e-mail I have for him is jaboggan@surfnet.com. Not sure if that is current or not. He might be a better source than me.

I also have an aunt named Dot Ward who was a past president of the DAR and spent a good bit of time with Katie Prince. Her address is 509 Lake Point Lane, Madison, MS 39110. She'll be glad to help if it's convenient for her : ) I was thinking that Katie Prince had to have put together a family history to be accepted into the DAR. Maybe Dot has a copy of that or could give you a contact at the DAR.

My e-mail is whward@columbus.rr.com. I can give you general family lore, not sure I can give as specific information as you need. I stumbled across your post because I "Googled" Katie Prince in my own search about Ward family info. I generally travel during the week in my job so I may not respond until the weekends. Good luck on your search.

Katie Prince Esker, whom I last saw in 1973 when her brother-in-law, Clarence Esker died in Norwalk, Ohio, was married to Jerome Esker, son of Ferdinand Esker and Rosa Pahl.
This Esker branch has no known ties with the Illinois group, having come from Germany and settled in N. Ohio around 1834 when Ferdinand's father, Mathias arrived and married Mary Sinning in Millersville, Ohio.

Many years ago, Clarence and Jerome's brother Edward visited the Teutopolis Eskers, and though many of the first names are the same, he could find no ties. The Ohio Eskers originally spelled the name Oeschger.

Thanks for you informative message. Since posting my query in March, I have discovered that some Norwegians adopted German names in the early 1800's. It is also possilbe that a German married into a Norwegian family and that is how my Norwegian Grandmother ended up with a German surname.

Sorry to take so long to get back with you. I had computer problems.

First of all, there are many Eskers in this country who are not related. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any ties between your grandmother and Mathias Esker, who first came to Ohio. If your grandmother was an offspring of his, it would have to be through his sons, Ferdinand, Cornelius, or William.

I know Mathias came from Baden around mid 1800's because of a note I have to that affect that was written by his youngest son, William in 1949. It is also mentioned in a bio on Mathias and his wife, Mary Sinning, in Commemorative Biographical Record of Sandusky and Ottawa County, Ohio 1896.

The name was originally spelled Oeschger. However, in visiting Germany, I have found that both names are in use there.

There is a large set of Eskers with whom my family can find no connection that live around Teutopolis, Illinois. You might try there.
