Elizabeth Scott Eskridge McGavock/MacGavock Mississippi/Arkansas 1835-1903

This lady is not in my Eskridge line but she wrote a lot of letters that are catalogued at the University of North Carolina here:

http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/k/Ker,Mary_Susan.html

I'd like to connect her to her Eskridge relatives to see if the letters might be a useful source.

I found her in the MacGavock genealogies:

"Edward Jacob McGavock, son of Jacob, born in
Nashville, Tenn., 17 December, 1828, married ... Elizabeth Scott Eskridge, 25 June, 1866. She, daughter of Judge T. P. Eskridge and Mary Bynum, was born 29 November, 1835, at
Columbus, Miss., and died at Hot Springs, Ark., 9 February,
1903."

Her two children are listed:

"Edward Jacob, 24 June, 1868.

Mary Eskridge, 14 December, 1872, m. M. D. Russel, 15 May, 1894."

I found a marriage between Thomas P. Eskridge and Mary C. Binam 7 Jan 1830 in Adams Co., Mississippi but then I got stalled.

Does anyone connect to her?

John Eskridge b.1804 was the son of Sgt. George Eskridge, RW vet, Grayson Co., KY. He married Sabrina Shrader in Grayson Co.
I have seen him listed as John Weston Eskridge. Does anyone know what source was used to determine his middle name? All documents I have seen do not show a middle name or middle initial. Even the family Bible record shows him as John Eskridge.
Thank you for any input.

Kenya, thank you for contacting me. I am so glad to hear from you. You have helped solve a mystery for me. Before I get started, go to www.duckhilleskridge.com. It's a website I built about my Eskridge Family. These are stories told to me by various cousins I have been able to find over the years. Last year I found my cousin John Eskridge who was telling me about a family reunion he went to with a Beck family. I think it was in Detroit. He said he didn't know anybody there so he didn't stay long. He didn't know too much more than that and I had never heard of the Becks, so I could not do any searching. My 2nd cousin was Velma Eskridge Ratliff. Her father Harrison Eskridge and my grandfather Nathaniel Eskridge Livingston were brothers. You will see Velma's story. Also her brother Wille B. "Totsie" had 4 children Eltie, Ella Mae, Booker T. and Ed. Velma and William daughter Beatrice is still living (at least she was a few months ago). Let's connect. You can email me at kwp2@comcast.net. I would love to tell the Beck story. Again, thanks for contacting me Kenya!!

Re: Col Geo Eskridge vs KY Geo Eskridge

Hi, I descend from KY George Eskridge and can confirm that he does indeed descend from Col. George & Rebecca Bonham Eskridge. Dna has proved that. The problem is his line to Col. George has not been established. For many years the theory has been that KY George's parents were George & Hannah Demourville. I spent quite a bit of time pouring over records to determine if this were true. I have come to the conclusion they are not his parents.
George Eskridge b.1724 did marry Hannah Demourville abt 1745. Land records establish that. George was a carpenter & cooper as an adult and lived in Westmoreland Co. From county records it appears that Hannah predeceased him and no children were born of this marriage. If so, they may have died in infancy. There is no indication that George ever remarried. In 1754, he rented property near Sandy Point, on the Potomac, from his uncle Peter Rust. It consisted of 50A and he was to pay $1 per year rent and freedom to make any improvements on the property. In 1756 he died intestate. There's no indication that there were any heirs (wife & children) at all. His brother Samuel was appt administrator of his estate. No mention in settlement of estate or court records as to any children or wife.
Ky George Eskridge was born in 1763 - 7 years after this man died. So, there is no way that KY George could be his child.

Pat

That's great wheatfall! My grandmother and some of her siblings, Willie Mae's children, did relocate to Chicago from Duck Hill, MS. :)

I just find it TOO ironic to come across your family and we all stem from the Eskridge Family in Duck Hill, MS and we NOT be of kin.

I also forgot to mention, I have found some of my Eskridge cousins from my great Uncle Louis side too. Many of them live in Chicago. George and Phyllis Eskridge had 4 sons - Frank (my great grandfather), Louis, William Harrison and Doc. I have found some of Louis' descendants. The website will give you some names. He had a son named Morris. Morris and Clara had about 12-13 kids. I have found those great grandchildren. I also found Lettie's great grandchild. So just let me know what your family comes up with. Thanks.

Excellent. I hope your family can help. Maybe they can identify some of the Eskridge people in the 1944 Family Reunion photo that my aunt could not. A lot of the Eskridge family moved to Chicago. My mother was born there and she's an Eskridge/Livingston. I beleive all those folks in the photo lived in Chicago, but I can't swear to it (smile). Hope to hear from you soon!! Thanks.

Wheatfall I have sent the duckhilleskridge website to older family members who may be able to state whether or not there were two branches of the Eskridge Family living in Duck Hill, MS.

Concerning the Willie Mae Eskridge, I know my grandmother was 22 around the time of 1944(and she had relocated to Chicago) so either she was not in the picture or this is a diff. branch of the Eskridge Family.

I am awaiting my other family member's responses for clarification.

Interesting! Did you take a look at www.duckhilleskridge.com? There is a Willa Mae (#16) on the 1944 Family Reunion photo. She was the daughter of Missouri Eskridge Hall. There is an unknown man standing next to her (#15). Other than her, I have never heard of the name Willa Mae Eskridge. This is probably not the same Willa Mae but you can check just in case. Thank you for sharing! If you find anything connecting us, please let me know.

Hmmm, this is interesting. My grandmother, (Susie McMath-her midwife name) or better known as Clytie McMath Collier was born to an African American named Willie Mae Eskridge who married a McMath man out of Duck hill, MS.

I do not know any other information concerning the Eskridge family besides what I can recall from attending various family reunions as a child:

1)There is an Eskridge quilt made of all the Eskridge and descendants names.

2) My grandmother's (Willie Mae) parents or grandparents owned land but it was taken away [stolen] and eventually an amusement park was built ontop of the land... and that is all I know concerning my Eskridge side of the family.

William Kenner Eskridge, b.1879, son of William & Sidne Eskridge, of Grant Co., KY & Tipton Co., IN

I have an original postcard photograph of “William Kenner Eskridge”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1915, and he looks to be about 35-40.

I found William Kenner Eskridge in the WWI Draft registration in Tipton (Tipton Co.) IN, showing his birthdate 19 Dec 1881. I checked 1880 & 1900 censuses and found him in Grant Co., KY in 1880, as 6 months old, son of William K. and “Sidna” Eskridge. By 1900, he was still in Grant Co., KY, but shows a birthdate of Dec 1879 (so the age given in his WWI Draft Reg. was in error). In 1900, he lived with his mother Sidney Eskridge, born Sep 1854.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to William K. Eskridge.

Looking for Tilford Hillis Eskridge Sr. possibly in Arkansas 18to Indian Territory/Okla

I was hoping to reach Mary Harrison re the Arkansas Eskridges but when I emailed her the address was no longer good. I am searching for my grandfather, Tilford Hillis Eskridge Sr., "Tif." He came from Arkansas (Batesville? Salem?) to Elmore City, Indian Territory with a J. (Jim) P. Gibson ca 1901. He married Jim's sister, maybe name of Amanda Gibson. I have good info after Tif arrived in Oklahoma but nothing between 1848-1901, ages 18-35. Does anyone have a TH Eskridge Sr. in your records please? (The posted TH Eskridge Jr is his son, and this isn't who I am searching for.) TH Eskridge Sr's father was Newport Eskridge from Indiana. If anyone in Arkansas has record of TH Eskridge or of JP Gibson, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Judy in Alaska.
