Frances married Thomas G Pierce. Found Military pention records for one Thomas G Pierce JR, widow named frankie, also found Military record for Thomas G Pierce SR, birth dates are 1832 for SR. 1839 for JR.I now Have Frances Married to JR. Is this correct? JR died from wounds in the war in 1864. Leg was amputated. who is who? Does anyone know Frances"frankie" Jones Pierce or her Parents? Or why there are two Thomas G Pierce in the same regiment same infantry with ages fairly close one SR. and one JR.?

Does anyone in this thread know whether there were any Eslicks/Eastlakes/Eslakes or other variants of that name in Jamaica in the 1840s or 1850s?

My reason for asking is that my great-great-grandfather William Roy Slatyer, who was born in Jamaica in 1844, the son of a Congregationalist Missionary, subsequently changed his surname to 'Eslake' in the 1860s or early 1870s, after he had emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales (Australia) and fallen out with his father. None of us has any idea why he chose the name 'Eslake' when he changed his name; there is no evidence that he had ever been to Cornwall (where variants of that name, as noted earlier in this thread, are not unknown), and his father's family came from Olney, Buckinghamshire.

However it has been suggested that there were living in Jamaica during the time he was living there (from his birth i 1844 until the early 1850s) some Cornish miners, among whom there may have been people with the surname Eastlake, Estlake, Eslick or even Eslake .. and that they may have had children who could have been among his childhood playmates, and whose name he recalled fondly when deciding to change his own.

That's mere speculation on my part and I would be thrilled to know if there was in fact any substance to it.

Saul Eslake, Melbourne Australia

Just started researching the Eslick line of my mother's family and have been very interested in reading all of your posts. I agree about documentation, making corrections, etc. I find so many mistakes and assumptions on Ancestry that it drives me kind of crazy. I guess it's easier to accept ancestors that others claim are correct rather than do the hard work of documentation.
That being said, I am an Eslick (TN branch) through my grandmother: she is Lucille Eslick, daughter of Benjamin Newton Eslick and Myrtle Scott, he the son of James Madison Eslick and Sarah Arnold, he the son of James B. Eslick and Mary Mcbay, he the son of Isaac B. (I think) and then his father Isaac of NC.
I'm interested in any information anyone has about this line.

Good day. I don't doubt that some Eslicks, Esleecks et el derive from Cornwall place names. That being said, there are definitely others (e.g., Eslick, Isaac & Eslick, Samuel) who are documented in "Even More Palatine Families: 18th Century Immigrants to the American Colonies and their German, Swiss and Austrian Origins"
Authors: Henry Z Jones, Jr. and Lewis Bunker Rohrbach
ISBN Number: ISBN: 0-89725-454-6
Many Palantines came to England in the early 1700s and were recruited by the British Crown to come to the colonies in North America to provide technical services/repairs to ships of the Royal Navy.

Hi, I have done extensive searches over the past 30 years, and am pretty certain anyone with the name Eslick can usually track the surname back to Cornwall.

Mining was a very common occupation in that area. There is or rather was a hamlet called Eastlake in Cornwall this is near Kenwyn, Truro where my family came from and in those days you took on a name to describe yourself as you know, this over time became Estlake Eslake Esloch Eslick because the individuals couldn't read and write and had to rely on parish priest to record entries and if you've ever heard a cornish accent it is easy to see how names change.

I was lucky enough to have an Eslick ancestor who married into an aristocratic family and as such gone back certainly to Norman times through 2 lines, and if other research is accurate, of which I'm very unsure, back to the time of Christ.

I agree that it's difficult to parse some of these family lines. Following up on your #3 & #4 notes below, the MA/RI line also lived in VA post 1800 before returning to New England (see 1820 Census, Prince William County VA and you'll find Eslick listed).
(a). Phebe A. Esleek - DoB: 15 MAR 1817 in VA; Married William Sisson back in RI; DoD: 2 DEC 1903 in Portsmouth, RI
(b). Lydia Esleek - DoB: 18 JUL 1818 in VA; Married David Almy 22 JUN 1856 in Portsmouth, RI; DoD: 6 SEP 1892 in Portsmouth, RI
(c). Rebecca Eslick/Esleek - DoB: 30 JAN 1824 in Occoquan Mills, Prince William County, VA; Married Richard C. Spencer 24 OCT 1844 in Newport, RI; DoD: 30 April 1910 in Oak Bluffs, MA but was buried in Newport, RI (Island Cemetery) next to her first husband Richard Spencer.
(d). John R. Eslick/Esleek - DoB: 1821 in VA; Married Ruth in Portsmouth, RI and had three children with Sarah born in RI, Augustin born in Texas, and Harriet born in NY. John R died 1870 in Glynn County Georgia (see 1870 Census Mortality index).
I'm interested in clarifying family relationships in the 1800-1830 time-frame between the Virginia and Rhode Island families.

I am interested in all Eslick, Esleck, Esleek, Eastlake or other spellings proven to be directly related to Eslick family that came primarily from England to the N.E. States, then on down the east coast, the midwest, southwest and northwest. My immediate family connections are through my Mother, B. J. Eslick, living daughter of William Beaden Eslick and Fannie M. Nickless. I am not interested in conjecture, or lines established on hearsay. I am a firm believer in the fact "any text taken out of context becomes a pretext" and can not be relied upon for fact. My maternal family line of an Eslick tree on Ancestry is "The Pioneer Eslick Roots." My paternal tree is the "The Mountain Hammer(s)Tree" I have had to make, and need to make more changes to both trees after accepting "misleading leads" that have had me chasing dead ends or ghosts. I would appreciate any seriously well-grounded geneological assistance. Such assistance would be greatly appreciated.

In checking out my Mother-in-law's family (Eslick/Couch/Kilgore) ran across your letter of 2005 on Rootsweb concerning the Eslicks. Are you still doing genealogy these days? I haven't had any new persons to work on in about 3 years, so guess I am about finished there. I appreciate all the help you gave me in the past. Many, many thanks. Liz Kilgore

Isaac Eslick is likely the father of Sarah Eslick Taylor, since on the 1860 Morgan Co., Alabama census, the oldest children of Robert A. Taylor are: Martha A. age 11, Isaac Edward age 8 (I posted the obit on him), William G. age 4, then there is a baby James Littleton, age 6 months.

There is a 1858 marriage in Lincoln Co., TN for Robert A. Taylor and Sarah Jenkins. From the death certificate for the youngest child of Robert A. Taylor, Sarah A. Taylor Cotter who died in Ector Co., Texas, her mother was Sarah Jenkins. So this supports the second marriage for Robert A. Taylor. Where did his first wife die--probably in Lincoln Co., TN???

I have obits for Isaac Edward, James Littleon, and John Robert Taylor, but have found no information about William G. Taylor or Martha A. Taylor, two of the three children for Robert A. Taylor and first wife Sarah Eslick.

Curious if you have found any connection between Eslick and the surnames of Pickett and Jenkins in Lincoln Co., TN? On the 1870 Lamar Co., TX census, Robert and Sarah Jenkins Taylor are living near the Pickett family and Jenkins family from Lincoln Co., TN, also Martha Jenkins Workman and her husband (the Workman family wound up in KY after leaving Texas). Two of the Pickett brothers, A. J. and James Mitchell Pickett, were living within a few miles from Isaac Taylor's daughter's in-laws in what became Velma, Stephens Co., Ok---later Isaac and his brother John Robert lived near Isaac's daughter in NW Carter Co., OK; their sister Sarah Taylor Cotter lived near Grady and Garvin Counties before she and her husband moved west.

I do not know where Robert A. Taylor and his wife Sarah Jenkins Taylor died, but they were alive in 1882 Cooke Co., TX where they sold some land.

Eslick Genealogy errors

Again I visit this page to see if any reply has been made to my previous posts. Not much.
It becomes more and more obvious that some people do this for religious reasons, and some do it for fun and the knowledge of who really were their ancestors. It seems SAD that there are those who will not correct their lines to reflect the true ancestry. Why continue to believe in an ancestor who is not yours? For religious reasons LDS adherents desire to get as many people listed in their genealogies to help them in the next life. That alone constitutes a reason to include a non related person on the flimsiest evidence. Publishing a genealogy in error leads to an admission that you were wrong when you correct it. I know, I have had to pull down posted genealogies and correct them. All of you should seek the truth. As for the LDS members, Be careful, when you establish your new planet with your ancestors there to assist you , you may have a bunch of non-related angry Baptists and Presbyterians there seeking to overthrow your rule on the new planet.

I don't have a marriage certificate yet, so I'm not 100% sure that the wife of Stephen ESLICK in my tree was Mary CROSSMAN. I would be interested to find out though; it sounds like we have some overlapping information.

Eloise

ESLICK > Tavistock, Devon & Lancashire

I'm interested to hear from anyone with ESLICKs in Tavistock, Devon, or surrounding areas. Later generations moved up to Lancashire, so I'm also interested in any information of ESLICKs there.

The earliest ESLICK in my tree is Stephen ESLICK (probably born around 1780). He married Mary, and had at least four children; Elizabeth, William, Thomas and John. It's possible Elizabeth married John JOHNS, although I haven't had confirmation of this as yet.

William married Mary GEACH, born in Sweetshouse, near Bodmin in Cornwall. They had children; William, Mary, Stephen, Henry, Elizabeth, Dinah and Eliza. There may also have been a daughter, Kate.

Please reply to this post if you have any information on this family, or indeed ANY possible relations.

Re: Elizabeth Eslick & John Johns

Hello Gerald,

A lady spoke to me last week on Genes Reunited in regards to an Elizabeth ESLICK and John JOHNS. From what she said, it sounds a lot like my ESLICKs, who are also from Tavistock.

If this is the same line, Elizabeth would have been born c1821. Her parents were Stephen ESLICK and Mary. Her siblings were William, Thomas and John. William is who I am descended from.

The lady I spoke to said that Elizabeth married John JOHNS, but that he was one of FIVE husbands. She didn't manage to find the marriage record of her marriage to John JOHNS though, so she's not 100% sure on this one.

Did you want me to forward her your email address in case you would like more information? Feel free to email me at eloisefifield@yahoo.com.

Eloise

Living in 1890 Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory

For anyone who researches the Eslick surname, on the 1890 Chickasaw Nation census, living in the Pontotoc County of the Chickasaw Nation, there were JOSEPH ESLICK and wife, with three sons and four daughters, listed as noncitizens, with a legal permit to live in the Nation.

Is this family connected with the Eslick families in Lincoln Co., TN where Sarah Eslick and Robert A. Taylor were married in 1845, before moving to Alabama, then to north Texas by 1870, Cooke Co. by 1880 and then at least two of their sons were in the Chickasaw Nation by 1890?

OH! I was just a little confused, but this information is good to know as I do not know of other postings about the ancestry of Rhoda Powell Eslick. Thank You.

My focus is with the Eslick family in NC and TN 1750 to 1900.
Primarily due to the fact that my grandfather would look up the family name in the phone book of every town he visited in an attempt to find out about his ancestry.

One of the unusual aspects of this is that I have determined that the Eslicks of Kentucky and Missouri are not connected to this family although almost all the posted genealogies incorrectly assert they are connected.
