Hi Bob,
Yes, I'd love more information on the Espie's. I have my family tree on Ancestry.co.uk (under Edwards)and also www.genesreunited.co.uk. On genes reunited there is also an Espie researcher named David Brown, who has a lot of Espie info., plus an Andrew Espie.

I have yet to make my breakthrough that really ties my Espie's to Ireland, but I know it won't be long.

This subject is one of my main interests. I would be pleased to share details.
Scottish origins prior to 1610 are likely "Esbie Wood" and "Esbie Cottage" south of Glasgow near the Lockerbie area.

My branch went from Londonderry south to Cookstown by the 1780s in successive generations. Related lines went to ON, Canada, PA, USA and to Australia.

My maiden name was Martin and I grew up near Martinborough and my Mother did a lot of research on the Martin family which we have never managed to get published. We do have some information on Sarah Espie.

My Robert Espy was born in Portaferry, NI in 1858.
His father, William, a sailor, is said to have been born in Wales. He died at sea c. 1865
His mother was Elizabeth Savage.
There was a lot of Espy/Savage interconnection. His sister Jane married John Savage, their first cousin.
Brother George, also a sailor married Sarah Wallace in Portaferry
Another sister, Margaret married Henry Donan in Portaferry.
Robert, George, Jane left Portaferry for Glasgow in early 1880's. Robert married Annie Clark there. Those three siblings all moved on to New York.
Another sister, Maria, also went to Glasgow, but her trail is lost after the 1881 census.
I have not found any trace other than birth records of the other two siblings. William & Elizabeth.
The family name changes to ESPIE when they leave Ireland.
I have not been able to fit this family into a larger context.

I thought it was the other way round, I thought my espies came from ireland in the 16-17c.

This is a year after your posted message and trip to Glasgow butI have history of Espies coming to Australia in 1820 - from
Cork to Tasmania- and am interested in their movement from Scotland to Ireland in the Plantations in 1610?
Do you know anything about this move?

I too am searching family ESPY'S or ESPIE'S who originated from Ireland and then to Scotland.
John Espy and wife Robina married in Nth Ireland and 3 sons
William,John and Robert came to Scotland abt 1792.

Just to let you know that I'll be going over to Scotland and England for three weeks over May / June this year with my family. I'll be going to Glasgow to do at least one day of genealogy (I'd love to do the whole three weeks), but I have my 4 yr. old & hubby in tow. I'll be going to the Mitchell Library, so I'll if there is anything in particular that any of you would like me to look up (esp. about the Espie's)I'd be happy to try. Just have another look and I think I have the wrong Sophia Espie. I think my Sophia was born 1793. I need to do some checking.

I also descend form Sophia Espie born 1778. Via Helen Bell born 1822 Lanark Scotland. Sophia is my 4X Great Grandmother. I have just found Helen Bell's parents so do not have much info on the immediate family but have a lot of her descendants (Pearson, Davidson, Sneddon).

Would love to share info. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am tracing the Espie generation of our family tree who all seem to come from hamilton area.

William Espie and Helen Gebbie married in 1887 in Hamilton.

Anymore hamilton Epies out there?

I am particularly looking for children of Elizabeth Black and john Espie who lived in 15 holyrood street hamilton - 7 children - William Espie was 15 then. Interested in his brothers and sisters, who they married, when they were born/died.

My Espie and Campbell relations emigrated from Northern Ireland to New Zealand in 1840. Not sure that they will link to your family.

Trish, you may be ahead of me with my family. I don't know. The furthest back I can go is from my ggrandfather Andrew Taylor Espie (1847 - 1920) of Glasgow to his father William Espie (no dates) who married a Sarah Peace (N.D.). Ring any bells? Most of my family are from Glasgow.

I am descended from William Espie b. 1759, through his daughter Sophia, born 1778 in Leadhills, Scotland. William was my gggggxgrandfather - at present I've only found daughters, but have not been researching this family long. Its rather an unusual name so we could be connected. Can you get your line any further back?

Hello there! If you have any Espie family members in the Glasgow area or in Scotland at all I'd love to hear from you. My Grandfather was Thomas Wilson Espie (1885 - 1953). He married Elsie Gordon Jamieson (1885-1969). He had siblings William, Annie, Agnus, Sarah & Richard. Their father was Andrew Taylor Espie (1847-1920) and mother was Annie Wilson (1846 - ?). I'd love to find out the derivations of the Espie's.
