Samuel Jackson Essary of Alabama

Samuel Jackson Essary b. 1842 in Alabama, d. Apr 24 1925 is my 3rd great grandfather. I am trying to link him to who I think is his father, James Essary, then James' father Sampson Essary. Does anyone have documentation that proves this? This line supposedly goes back to Sookie Hopper, full blooded Cherokee and daughter of Chief Kanagatoga aka "Old Hop" and "Standing Turkey". Any help is appreciated.

Suzette, your gr grandparents James “Buck” Essary and Lillie Bartholomew are fairly well documented in the Essary family tree, but your note added several proper given names and dates I did not know. James Buchannan’s father was John Montgomery Essary, and his father was Sampson Essary, and his father was James Essary. You may e-mail me directly at essarys@aol.com. There is more back to England.

Herbert Essary was the grgrandson of Joseph S. Essary (b.1814), who came to Claiborne Co. Tennessee from Russell County Virginia after the Civil War. Joseph was the son of William Henry Necessary (1775 MD - 1845 VA). Joseph and several of his nephews who also moved to Claiborne County changed their name from Necessary to Essary after their move. These were the only Necessarys to make this name change. They are not related to the Essarys with roots in other Tennessee counties. If you want more on Herbert's line, e-mail me directly at essarys@aol.com.

To Mytrun22, Oklahomagreen, and Kathomas:
Thomas Willie Essary who married Eliza Victoria Gentry about 1908 or ’09 was the son of Aljurial Essary and Matilda. Aljurial was born Feb 1867 in Virginia, probably Russell County. Aljurial’s parents were Charles Winton Essary and Martha Elizabeth Todd. Charles Winton was born Charles Winton Necessary, son of Thomas Jefferson Necessary. Thomas Jefferson’s children and his brother Joseph migrated across the border to Claiborne County, Tennessee about 1868 or ’69, and decided to change the spelling to Essary, the only Necessary descendants to do so. Thomas and Joseph’s father William Henry Necessary was born in 1775 in Maryland. The Necessarys have a tradition that the name was originally Essary but was changed to Necessary when an ancestor got into some (unknown) trouble with the law. However, a DNA test for a Necessary descendant revealed that the Necessarys and the Essarys from other Tennessee counties do not share a single genetic marker.

Necessary researchers have not presented evidence for the parents of William Henry Necessary. There are a number of family trees at rootsweb.com which show descendants of William Henry, but none include very much of the family who changed spelling to Essary. There is a Necessary family web site at MyFamily.com. Introduce yourself and request permission from NeldaRogers97@myfamily.com I am happy to share what I have of them if you would like a gedcom of the Necessary Essarys.
essarys@aol.com

I have just started researching my mother's lineage. I believe that you might be able to help me. My mother's name is Barbara Ann McConkey, born 1962. Her parents names were Roger McConkey(aged 42 in 1962) and Mildred Pauline Dodd(aged 28 in 1962). My mother was given up by them to the Leonards, who gave me all the information they could on them before they died. My mother has said she wants me to stop my search, but I would like to find out as much as I can for medical reasons. I believe that you might be able to help me because yours is the only board that shows a Mildred Dodd. If you can I would grately appreciate any help you might give.

I am one of the grandsons of Bert and Bessie Essary, son of Thomas Edwin Essary and Vicki Rae Essary, and i just stumbled upon this. Bert lived an amazing life and was and is my hero. Bessie was the most kind and caring individual you could find. honestly Elizabeth Essary took major advantage of my grandpa after Bessie past away, being aware that Bert didn't have long to live, then changing her name after selling all his stuff away. I have no respect for Beth and i honestly hate her. i will never forgive her for the way she was and for the way she acted at Grandpa's Funeral; sorry for the negativity brought upon our family and last name because of beth, Bert deserved a celebration and remembering his life on that special day, and beth didn't deserve the flag that was folded up or the 21 gun salute shells that were put in the flag. she deserves every bit of bad karma that is coming to her for the rest of her life. I, Thomas Cody Essary hopes not to see beth face to face ever again. and wish beth the worst in life, and may it be so i pray, amen. I've never felt more strongly about anything in my heart, to think about the hurt she caused My Dad and Grandpa Bert Earl Essary, may he rest in peace and love, and Grandma Bessie Essary as well
/Thomas Cody Essary

Never have I heard of any adoption being held, delayed, never allowed to happen because of this reasoning you have layed out. Ellaboration please.
But I will tell you I am Indian, Cherokee and it is Essary related. Also have Indian blood on my paternal side. Yet I am not documented with any nation.
The other was trying to find for another Essary researcher that was looking for her Indian blood.
I think one of my Aunt's children claimed the they had contact with the Cherokee nation and filled in some missing information on this line.
Not on the Indian rolls myself, and as they say, some have a nosebleed and they would not have any Indian blood in them.
I knew the horse's mouth as they say and I know of my Indian heritage, but have not bothered to obtain documentation on it.

In regards to:

The obiturary was not correct because it was made up by Beth (Elizabeth)
She didn’t even include my husband Ed Essary or any of the family and I had
To make an additional obituary to include them.
Bert was Father to Todd & Ed in family for most of their life.
Douglas Todd we call Todd, was adopted by Bert & Bessie at an early age. and Todd was the father of Elizabeth.
Todd married Linda who had 3 or 4 children.

Vessary1998@charter.net
While looking over my family tree I preceeded to confuse my self with the sentence. Thought perhaps there was an error.
Of course his obit does not give that information.
I can be reached at young.judith@sbcglobal.net
and I am an Essary descendant.
Bert was married to Bessie for 50 some years and had a wonderful life and only in his last years he married Elizabeth Lee Graham who was only 22 years old, which this marriage shocked the whole family, because Elizabeth (Beth)
was his daughter from his adopted son Douglas Todd Essary.
He was lonely from missing his loving wife Bessie who was so wonderful. so Beth sold the house and got 250,000 to buy her own house in another state leaving nothing for the other kids.
but what the other kids and grand kids do have his the wonderful memories of a wonderful man, grandpa. and grandma Bessie.
which no-one can take away.

Re: Rebecca Essary marriage to Newt Lemay?

I second marbos31’s doubts about Newt Lemay. As far as I know, the marriage of Rebecca Essary and Newt Lemay was first published by Teresa Brown in a 1996 Essary tree. “(Rebecca) Eller Essary and Newt Lemay. Eller b. ca. 1825.” Eller was named daughter of James (1779) Essary in this genealogy (NOT dau of James (1805) Essary, whose dau. Rebecca married James Craft). Teresa did not name sources, but other than her own research, she also incorporated research from Sue Essary in her genealogy of this branch of the Essarys. Warren Dale Essary published this same relationship (showing Eller’s birth as ca. 1826) in his 2001 genealogy. He cited Teresa, David Wayne Essary (who had named a Rebecca E. Essary), and the 1840 census, which included unidentified females of Rebecca’s age. James (1779) Essary’s surviving children are now known with some certainty, and he had no children born after 1823 who survived, or whose children survived, his death about 1859.

The possibilities too remote for me to publish are (1) Rebecca d/o James 1779 m. Newt Lemay and both died without issue before 1859, or (2) as noted by marbos31, Rebecca d/o James 1805 m. Newt Lemay before Craft and was soon widowed or divorced.

Bigest problem has been to find a single occurance of any Newt Lemay to consider. I have personally searched at some length to find the kernel of truth in this Essary/Lemay story (these stories invariably have one), but to no avail. I finally removed the elusive Newt Lemay from my active Essary tree, but solicit any clues from others to solve his mystery.
Gary Essary (essarys@aol.com)

I have Rebecca married to James Craft only. I have Rebecca's birthdate as 26 Sep 1828 which would have made her 17 when she married James Craft on 30 Nov 1845. Unlikely but not impossible that she could have been married previously, but I have done a lot of research on the Essary family and have never found any record of her marrying Newt Lemay.
