Hi Taffy,

Thanks for the pic. His face doesn't remind me of any of my family but then I don't have too many old photographs for comparison. Most of my Esse family came from England to Australia and I know some whent to America but can't actually verify that at the moment.

Thank so much for the pic, I will keep it in case I come across one that has similaries.

Best regards,
Di

I will do that. The picture is from Massachusetts....I got it from a Goodwill auction ( which is a charitable auction site for disabled). I only wanted the frame. Then I turned it over and it had this name on it.....I am off to work so will do it when I return.

I bought a picture frame from online Goodwill. In it is a wonderful old photo of a man who kind of looks like Grover Cleveland. There is a name J. Esse on the back with a Massachusetts address. I think this is the person who ordered the photo rather than the person in the photo but I am just guessing. It is a large photo. If I could locate a family member I would gladly return the photo. It is black and white and almost looks like it could have been a sketch. The glass was very soiled so I am thinking maybe it was part ofan estate and came from the attic.

Setona/Susan Esse Hatleberg is found in Brooklyn, NY, 1920

Setona has always been a family mystery. The family story was that after her husband Simon/Sam Hatleberg died [Minneapolis, 1890] she was going to leave MN behind and head to the culture offered in NY city. I guess the story is true.

Found her listed in the 1920 census as Setona? Hattlebury?? She was living with her daughter Blanche, son-in-law George and grandson George, jr. But I cannot figure out what George's last name is because the writing is difficult to read.

Tried dozens of combos in search engines without success. Looks like it is "Boomere" but that must not be correct. Always one more mystery to solve. Would appreciate it if a reader would take a stab at trying to decipher it.

Would love to find an obituary for Setona next. She died before her brother Chris Esse did in October of 1929.

Rob

I am a descendant of Henry Xavier Lorentz and Julia Panquerne. I have just started to trace the Lorentz/Panquerne line, so I don't have too much information. Henrietta Lorentz Caldwell's obit stated her father's name was Henry Xavier Lorentz and that Henrietta in interred in the Masonic cemetery in New Orleans. I'm not sure if the following information is correct but I believe Julia Panquerne's father was Urbin/Urbain Panquerne. Urbin's parents were Pierre Panquerne and Marie Picoux. Please email me if you would like to share information. peg3712@bellsouth.net
Thank you!
Peggy

Esse Family in Indiana and Kansas

A bit of a breakthrough has given me a few more details about the Esse family I've been researching. George W Esse was included in the 1859, 1860 and 1870 censuses of Allen CO, KS, living in Geneva Twp. He was the father of Eugene Clinton Esse, coming to KS with his parents in 1857 and settling at Geneva. He remained there with the exception of one year in IN and 2 years in Eldorado Springs, MO. He married Alice D Morris on 2 May 1874 and they had three children, Maude b 15 Aug 1876, Merritt and a child who died in infancy. Eugene had a sister who married E R Mabie. Maude married Aldo Funston on 7 Jun 1899 and lived in Parsons, Labette Co, KS at the time of her death on 27 May 1966. Merritt reportedly lived in CA at the time of his death (date unknown). I have more info about the Funstons, but that is another story!

Peggy,

I am pleased to hear from you. I know it will take more than just me to find some answers. According to some sources Henry's name as a child was Xavier Essex and he was legally adopted by William Lorentz who was from Mississippi. I can find no evidence of this. But I do have copies of birth, and marriage certificates. My E-Mail address is clifflorents@hotmail.com.
Esse

Esse is a farm name near Balestrand, Sogn, Norway from which my family emigrated in 1861. Esse is also German, English, Dutch, Spanish and Italian, as far as i know. There are Esse family members in the Detroit area who have given names that appear to be of Islamic/Arabic origins. In Houston, Texas, the Esse family there once told me that they were of German heritage. In Latin, Esse means "to be." Good luck.
Rob Esse, Little Falls, MN

So, I have nothing handwritten by the actual relatives with that name written. But my family says it is Esse. I will keep your information, because I know one day it will come in handy. I'll order a marriage license next.

Esse/Lorentz mystery

I am attempting to unravel a mystery concerning a family story that has been passed down, but I cannot trace it. Henry Lorentz was reported to have been adopted, maybe not legally,by William Lorentz who was born in Louisiana and lived in New Orleans. Henry was born around 1854 and his birth parent was Esse or Ess. He married Julia Panquerne in 1885 and died in 1954. Contact through the message board. Thank, Janet

Did your relative's husband originally come from the Buffalo, NY area? That was a German line, I believe. There are German Esses living in the Houston area according to a letter received years ago from an elderly widow lady in Houston. Another line of Esses lived in Virginia in colonial times who were of English descendant. Have also seen the surname as being French.

Hi Bruce;

I'm afraid our Arnesens aren't yours. My ggrandfather Martin Orlando Arnesen is the only one in his family who spells the name with an 'e'. All others are Arneson.

Arne Christofferson, born ca 1800 in Norway, married Gunnhild Elefsdtr on Mar 18 1830 in Norway. They had 14 children, 7 of whom died in early childhood, one who stayed in Europe and six who emigrated to the US with their parents. The name Arneson came from Arne - paternal naming system.

Arne and Gunnhild's eldest son was Ole Arneson, to whom Martin (my ggrandfather) was born.

There is no mention of a name similar to your relative in our tree. Sorry. I know this wasn't much help to you.

Happy ancestor hunting;

Brenda
