Philip was born in Prussia in 1850 and christened in Kirchenbollenbach,Rheinland, Prussia on 20 March 1850. He came to the US as a baby with his mother. His father, Matthias, was already here in Racine,Wisconsin. I can find them on the 1860 Census in WI. I can't find them in 1970. In 1880, they were in Iowa. The area in Germany was Oberstein; my grandfather also said Schlesweg/Holstein. I do not know when or where he met Carolina Essig, but I do know their first daughter was born in Freeport, Illinois in 1875.

Joyce - Reichert was also a very popular surname in the town of Weissach. What is Phillip's background? Was he also born in Germany, or were his parents? I would like to explore further to see if there is perhaps a connection to my ancestors.

You have given me much to think about here. I suppose it is possible that Bremen was the reason for the Oldenburg entry. I wish, wish I could find the Reichert family on the 1970 census, as that would help place them somewhere. Caroline Essig married Phillip Reichert and their first child, Caroline, was born in Freeport, Illinois. She died in Clifton, Kansas, which is Washington County. Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it.

Joyce - Her siblings, niece and nephews immigrated to rural Kansas, Russell County, town of Plymouth from the 1860s to early 1900's. Not certain of religion, but assume it was "evangelisch" (protestant Lutheran or Methodist?).

Oldenburg is far to the North from Weissach (Wurttemburg), but it is near the port city of Bremen. Could it be that she emigrated (or declared her intent to emigrate) from Oldenburg, but this was not her home town? I found a Caroline Essig age 23 (b. 1845-1846) on the passenger list of the ship Bremen which departed from port of Bremen for NY in July 1869. She is assumed to be "Bavarian" on the passenger list, but I see that she is listed among many passengers from Wurttemburg with surnames very common to the town of Weissach (particularly Gassner, Bartholomai and Strohacker). In fact, I found Looks to me to be a strong lead, at least for my ancestor.

Thank you for the quick reply. Yes, her maiden name was Essig. Would your immigrant ancestor have had any ties to Iowa or Stephenson County, Illinois or Kansas? And would they have been of the Catholic religion? Your information is the first that could possibly mean a connection, and I would like to hear further info. from you on the Essig name although I don't think Wurttemberg and Oldenburg are the same area in Germany.

Hello, my name is Jonie and I am doing my family tree on John Gottlieb KLEINKNECHT. He was born 30 Oct 1838 in Germany, not sure where at. I am trying to find him on a passenger list coming to North America. I don't know what port or date he came. All the info I found on him here, does not mention his homeland or date and port he came into. Does your book have any KLEINKNECHTS leaving German up to 1861. I know that is when he applied for citizenship, here. If you have any info for me, THANK YOU!

Probably spelled Karoline. Was Essig her maiden surname? The only person from Weissach I find close to fitting your description is Wilhelmine Karoline Essig b. 30 Dec 1845. She may have come to America, as did two of her siblings - one of them was my Great-Grandfather. I assume she left the town because there is no record of her death in the OSB (often means this person emigrated). However, I have found no records of her passage.

There are records of other Karoline Essig born within a decade of the dates you indicated. However, these all remained in or nearby Weissach.

My one brick wall in genealogy is my great-grandmother, whose name was Caroline or Carolina or Karolina Essig. She is listed on the birth record of one child as coming from Oldenburg, Germany. On another record, her origin is simply Prussia. I find no ship passenger record from Germany here, but she was born around 1848-1852. Any help from your list? Thank you.

I have several Jakob Friedrich Essig's from Weissach in my family tree, but none born before 1822. Do you have a birth date or year for Jacob Essig?? Was Christoph born in the USA?? I will check the Weissach OSB to see if I can find either one of them.
- Tom Essig

I am unsure if you can help me,but I am looking for information on my gggrandfather, Damianus Essig(aka Damian/Daniel Essig). He was born in Roxheim Pfalz, Germany. I have conflicting birthdates, but he married Barbara Krick(Krueck,Kriik,Krueck) who was born in 1854 in Germany. They married in 1877 and immigrated around 1884 to the United States. I cant find Damians actual birth date and have conflicting birth parents. The info I do have is from Familysearch.org. I do know the family was Catholic, being married in a Catholic church there. I believe they all changed their names except for Barbara. I can find no record of Damian except for his wife and children all in the Portsmouth and Columbus,Ohio areas. It is said that this Essig family was of Jewish descent which I find unusual and being Catholic, which could explain the name changes and immigration reasons. If you can help in any way I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Donna Grimm

I found this.. unfortunately no pic. sorry.

HABSBURG 1875
The HABSBURG was a 3,094 gross ton ship, length 353ft x beam 39.1ft, one funnel, two masts, iron hull, single screw, speed 12 knots. Accommodation for 142-1st and 800-3rd class passengers. Built by Earle's Shipbuilding, Hull, she was launched on 9th Jan.1875 for North German Lloyd of Bremen. Her maiden voyage started 11th Mar.1876 when she left Bremen for Southampton and New York and in May 1876 she transferred to Bremen - South America sailings. She resumed New York sailings on 21st Apr.1880 and started her 30th and last voyage on this service on 10th Apr.1886. Between 23rd Feb.1887 and 24th Oct.1894 she was used on the Bremen - Suez - Australia route, being re-engined and refitted to carry 63-1st, 30-2nd and 641-3rd class passengers in 1891. She made two further New York sailings in April - May 1895 and then reverted to South America voyages on 10th Nov.1895. Her final sailing on this route commenced 10th Mar.1896 and in 1898 she was sold to Italy, but stranded on her delivery voyage. Refloated in 1899, she was scrapped. [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.2,p.551]

if you go to www.theshipslist.com, it might offer more info

Essig immigrants to USA from Weissach, Germany 1850-1927

I recently obtained an original hardbound volume of "Das Ortssippenbuch Weissach", which is a large catalog/book containing detailed records of thousands of families (see some of the referenced Surnames) who lived in the town of Weissach, Böblingen, Württemberg, Germany from 1564 to 2003. The book also identifies individuals who emigrated to other locations, such as "Amerika". There are many Essigs identified who came to the USA during the period between 1850-1927, including my great-grandfather (Johann Konrad Essig), his niece and nephews, and many cousins.

There are similar Ortssippenbuchs (OSBs) for many towns throughout Germany, many of which are now available online. They are a tremendous resource for genealogical research. However, this particular OSB is not available on the internet. I would be glad to share information with anyone who is interested.
-- Tom Essig

Thanks for the reply, but my great-grandfather Conrad Essig was born in Weissach, Baden-Wurtemmburg, Germany around 1842. I suppose it is possible that he may be related to your Conrad Essigs of the 1600-1700s, but we have not been able to trace (with any certainty) his German ancestry.

The Conrad Essig I am researching emigrated to the US around 1865 and became a naturalized US citizen (Philadelphia, PA) in 1872. He moved westward to Russell County, Kansas in the late 1870s and then to Spokane, WA in the late 1880s. He finally moved to Hillsboro/Cornelius, Oregon where he fathered 3 more children (one of which was my grandfather). He died in Clackamas, Oregon in 1899.

Otto Henry Essig (my Great Uncle) was born 25 Aug 1894 and I believe was married to Lucile abt 1916. They had a daughter, Evelyn, born in Beaverton, Oregon in 1917. Otto and Lucille were still together with daughter Evelyn at the time of 1920 US Census living in Portland, Oregon. It appears they may have seperated or divorced several years later.

Otto's younger brother (my Grandfather) was Carl Albert Essig, born in 1897, but everyone called him Charley or Charles.

I found her living with her mother and sister Emma on the 1900 census. Three of her sisters were in St Vincents Orphanage in Phila & I believe the other one was living with an Aunt & Uncle in Carbon County, PA. The living sisters were Caroline (Weber) Bradley & Mary (not sure of her maiden name)Pass.
