I am researching for my book on the "37th Tennessee Infantry, Company E".

On the muster roll is a Levi Esslinger. All that I know about him is that he enlisted on October 10, 1861 in Owens Crossroads, AL.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and you will be credited in my book.

Leah Brannon

Interested in Jakob Esslinger b. 1787 in Göttlingen, Wurttemberg. Married Eva Rath 1808 in (Neu?) Sulzfeld and emmigated to Beresina, Russia near the Black Sea. Children were Karl Fredrich (1819-1868) Eva (1823-) Matthaus (1825-) Andreas (1829-1918. My family line is Karl Esslinger b. 1819/Michael b. 1855/Emma b. 1900. Michael and family emmigrated to Canada in 1888 and then to WA in US in 1901. Curious what parish records may be available for Göttlingen and the location (Neu?) Sulzfeld (Poland?). Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hi,

I looked at that one but she wasn't listed there. If you happen to find out which one it is, I would love to know. I used the seach feature on that site for both spellings: Esslinger and Eslinger but didn't get a hit there. I will be happy to see if your Esslingers link to ours if you could tell me the name of your ggg grandmother who was an Esslinger. I have some information that I can check for you. The Elizabeth I have listed as married to James Esslinger was Elizabeth Smith b.1836 Tennessee. I don't have her parents.

Dayna, Dalton is in Whitfield Cnty, GA, as is Cohutta. At a cemetery in Cohutta is a headstone that reads, Elizabeth Esslinger b Oct 26, 1836, d June 28 1908. This cemetery holds many members of the Ford family orig from NC in mid 1700's. I am a descendant of the Esslinger family, and also the Ford family, so found this interesting. This is the only information I have on Elizabeth. Find it interesting that we have 2 Esslingers in Whitfield Cnty, GA.

Cody,

Do you have any Esslingers that were born in Tennessee in the early 1800s and then moved to north Georgia around Whitfield Co.? They married into our Eskew family and I seem to be stuck in that area. My Emma Eskew married James Lee Esslinger in 1890 in Whitfield Co., GA and they seemed to have falled off the face of the earth after that. I have them in the 1880 census when James is with his father and mother at 10 years old. His father is James S. Esslinger b. abt 1818 in Tennessee and his mother is Elizabeth Smith.
Does any of this sound familiar to you? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

James Esslinger

I have a family in my lineage that is a mystery to all of us. I am actually researching the surname Eskew. I have a Lizzie
Eskew b. 1871 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., GA, dau. of William J. Eskew and Sarah A. Janis. Lizzie married James Lee Esslinger who was born in Tennessee about 1870.
Here is what I found so far:
James Lee Esslinger is found with is parents in the 1880 U.S. Census:
Chattooga Co. GA District 19 with his parents on page 12, enum. distr. 19, enumerated on the 7th of June 1880. James Lee Esslinger is 10 years old.
Household 109, family 114, lines 1-12 Birth	Father	Mother
Esslinger, James	62	head	farmer TN	TN	TN b. 1818
Elizabeth 44	wife	keeping house TN	TN	VA b. 1836
Liza 32	dau	at home TN	TN	TN
Parlee 22	dau	works in cotton mill GA	TN	TN
Julie 20	dau	at home GA	TN	TN
Margaret 17	dau	works in cotton mill GA	TN	TN
Mary 15	dau	works in cotton mill GA	TN	TN b. 1865
Lou 12	dau	works in cotton mill GA	TN	TN b. 1868
James Lee	10	son	farm laborer GA	TN	TN b. 1870
Joseph 6	son GA	TN	TN b. 1874
Surrera? 4	dau GA	TN	TN
Smith, Abigail 71	sister in law	works in cotton mill	GA	TN	TN

I find it very interesting that there is an Abigail Smith living with them since my Eskews are related to our Smith line. I'm not sure who Abigail is yet. If you know who any of these people are, please post to the list. I will get the message.

Thanks,
Dayna

Danny,
The Esslinger Brewery, what is left of it, is still located at 10th and Ridge Ave. in Phila. I don't know what history you have re. the brewery, but it was sold to a person by the name of Brown. I believe this occured in the 40's, but would have to look it up. They lived in what I think was Merion or Bala Cynwyd. Were friends of my parents. Only their children remain alive. The brewery changed hands after that several times.
The original brewery has been a chemical factory for some time. I asked the owner for the brass Esslinger and son plates by the door and was told to come back a week later and pick them up. When I came back, they had been removed from the front door. I was told that they had been stollen a few days before and that they could not give them or sell them to me. Think that I put a been in their bonnet. Someone there has the original brass plates! They were there for ages.
I have no idea who the parents of George Esslinger, who started the brewery, were. He might have come from Dornhan, Germanyj. Know that he came from Wurtenberg, Germany. I am not aware of any relatives of his that lived in Phila. around 1860. The only family information I have goes on from there, but I do not know you and feel strange giving info. over such a public medium. If you want to send me your phone no., I could give you a call. You did not tell me if your mother is an Esslinger.

My family is the only family directly related to George Esslinger who started and owned the brewery in Philadelphia. The George Esslinger name could not have gone to anyone else as there were no other sons to carry on the name. Perhaps you are related through the female side of the family which would not carry the Esslinger name. I also know all these people. Why and how do you think you are related? I can definitely help you here as I know the family history. Please give me your family tree information and I will help you with it. There are many Esslinger families that live in Philadelphia and other areas, but they are not related to George Esslinger, the brewer. Is your mother from the Phila. area? Are you from the Phila. area? If so, you can give me your phone no. and I will call you, if you wish.

Are you refering to the Esslinger brewery? It was Esslinger & Son. The son died in his early 40's and only had one son. This son had 2 boys. Why are you trying to trace this family? Do you believe you might be related?

AL area with this picture, so I assume these are Esslingers. There appear to be three couples and their children.
I have done a lot of research on the Esslinger's and have even written a book about the family that goes back about 500 years. Andrew J. Esslinger had a son named Robert J. Esslinger and Robert J. had a son named Andrew J. Esslinger the 3rd. Andrew had 8 children (I think) and one of them was James "Jim" Albert Esslinger who married Minnie Ethel Tabor. The two of them had 7 children. The middle child, Bessie Inez Esslinger married William Clifton Mitchell. The two had 5 children. Their baby daughter is Glenda Joyce Mitchell who married Robert Allen Hill. The two of them had 4 children, three daughters and one son, The middle daughter, Wilma Darlene Hill married Charles Gregory Spence in 1985. THe two of them had two sons. I am the oldest, Kristoffer Cody Spence and I was born in 1986 and my little brother, Patric Nicholas Spence, and he was born in 1991.

I have a lot more information. If you are interested you can e-mail me at codyspence14@yahoo.com.

According to "Two Hundred Years of Esslingers":
Andrew W. Esslinger married Emma S. Glover on 8/23/1901 in Madison County, AL. This information is refrenced from the "Index to Marriages of Residents of Madison County, AL" Volume 27, page 8.

The book is not indexed - I will keep looking for your ancestor, and let you know. I do not think that you can buy this book - it was published in the 1950's. I know that a copy can be found at the Huntsville, AL library.

Is there any other information that you have on your ancestors?

I descend from one of those daughters - LILA PEARL ESSLINGER, who married HARMON ULYSSES WIDENER in Madison County, Huntsville, AL in 1907.

I haven't been able to find any information on Martha Jane Esslinger. We have gone to what seems like every cemetary in Madison County, AL to no avail.
There is speculation her grave in not marked because she was an unwed mother?
Ellen, I have done a lot of research on the Esslingers, but most of the material that I have is from a woman that lives in Nashville, TN. Her and her mother have done a big history of the family and have traced it back many years. The names of your grandfather is in our research. I would love to hear from you and about what you have on the family. you can email me at codyspence14@yahoo.com. I recently wrote the Esslinger book that has dates all the way back to 1485 in Germany. I look forward to hearing from you. I will look into the names that you have posted. And we have a reunion coming up pretty soon, it is the first Saturday in June, I believe that it is June 5th. If you are interested in coming I can send you an invitation, which tells where the reunion is held.

We are having an Esslinger reunion on June 7, 2003 in New Hope, Alabama. I have gotten in touch with several people that have already said that they are coming. Most of the people who are coming are descendants of James Albert Esslinger and Minnie Ethel Tabor. The two were married in Sept. 1901. They have seven children. If you are interested in coming we would love to have you. You can e-mail me at codyspence14@yahoo.com and get an invitation. We are interested in finding out how you are related to us so if you could just tell a little about yourself. I am also making a new copy of the Esslingere book which is called "Many Years of the Esslinger Family" written by "me" Cody Spence. I am going to sale them at the reunion. There is a bunch of information dating back over 200 years and names and some dates going back almost 500 years. I look forward from hearing from you.

I am the great grandson of Bessie Inez Esslinger, who is the daughter of James Albert Esslinger, grandson of Robert Esslinger and Nancy Harless. My records show that Robert Esslinger and Nancy Harless had a son named Andrew Jackson Esslinger who married Francis Kirksey in 1872. and they had eight children. I do not know anything about Martha Jane Esslinger. but I do know that according to history the first Esslinger to come to America from Germany was Christian, in 1749. If you have a question about anything that I have written you can e-mail me at codyspence14@yahooo.com. I'd like to piece together what happened to the family after they came to Cameron, TX. I know Andrew and Emma had 7 children and I think all are deceased. I really appreciate your help.

Re: Esslinger in Madison County, AL

Does anyone have info on Andrew Watkins Esslinger from Madison. Married Emma C. Green (prev. married to Dr. A. N. Glover). Andrew & Emma moved to Cameron, TX. I believe he was my ggrandfather. Marrige records show they were married in Rosebud, TX. However, my grandfather (Don Roy Esslinger) was born in Onenta, AL 1913. He had brothers and sisters born in Gurley. If anyone knows the story, I hope to hear from you. Thank You!
P.S. Will be buying W.F. Esslinger's book soon!

I have been researching my ancestors and have included in my list Andreas Knodel who married Eva Margaretha Esslinger from Melnit or Milesk Poland born in 1804. she died in 1841 37 years, 8l months 10 days. I believe this all came in the pixel..odessa site. I have also included in my notes Film R57 new/1331 Borodino. I have been trying to find out whether Andreas who was born in 1803 Magrowolle Poland and died in 1856 is a brother to my ancestor Peter Knodel born in 1801 and came through Lemberg Poland or was born there at that time. If you have any info regarding Peter would you please forward this info to me. Thanks.
