Thank you Karen for all of your time researching my relatives. I have traced the Forrest family back to a generation before the John Forrest you mentioned and am completely stuck there with Samuel Forrest b 1796 Glamis Angus who married Isabella Benzies, i have alot of information on the Benzies side but nothing for Samuel except I think his father's name was William).
John Forrest did marry Helen Innes. I am unsure who the John Forrest and Helen Inees could be,sounds like a duplication of the same record perhaps.I do know that some of the Forrest's were born at the Grange, Banff????
Your theory for Robert and Elsphet Milne sounds like they could be more likely. The Milne family does come up time and again during my searching of other members of the family. And it is quite likely that Isabella could have been staying with her Grandmother during the census that you mentioned. I will look into this further. Thanks Again
On his marriage certificate to James Forrest's his parents were named as John Forrest an Agricultural Labourer(deceased) and Helen Forrest (maiden name Innes)resident in Fordyce.
I have found a record of marriage on 3rd February 1849 in Fordyce of John Forrest and Helen Innes. However, there is a second record of a John Forrest marrying a Helen Inees on 24th February 1849 in Grange, Banff.
If Robert Esson is the brother of Alexander Esson, I have a marriage record dated 10 February 1882 in Whitehills, Boyndie to a Elsphet Milne, spinster, aged 28. Robert was aged 34 and a bachelor at the time. George Esson was recorded as a witness, Alexander and Robert Esson had a brother George born 1831.

Thank you very much Karen!! Robert Esson and Elsphet Taylor sound like they could be my gg/grandparents. I am really keen to explore this side of the family. All we know here in Australia is that Isabella (Isa) was an amazing poet and actually had a book published.I believe that a copy of her book is still held in the Library at Keith. It gives a really wonderful insight to the woman that she must have been. My grandfather was very special to us all, and we would love to know more of his family, particularly his mother's side. You have made my day. Thank You.

Alexander Esson (1829) is my husbands great great grandfather. As far as we know he only had one child, Alexander Esson (1866) whose mother was Isabella Goodbrand. Alexander Esson (1829) never married, he was registered as a bachelor on his death record in 1899. Isabella Goodbrand also never married.
I have only managed to find one birth record for an Isabella Esson born during the period 1866-1867. She was born on 12 October 1867 in Logie Buchan, is registered illegitimate, her mother is recorded as Isabella Esson, there is no father named. There is an Isabella Esson b1866 recorded on the 1871 and 1881 census records living with Alexander Esson and his mother Isabella Esson.
I have also found the marriage record of Isabella Esson to James Forrest on 29 May 1890 in Fordyce. Isabella's father is recorded as Robert Esson. Alexander Esson had a younger brother named Robert born in 1848, this may have been him. Her mother was recorded as Elsphet Taylor.

Re John Esson from Coull. believe he is my Great Great granfathers brother. Great Grandfather Robert Esson married Jane Philip.
Family seemed to have originated in Logie Coldstone and then been in Coull. Elspeth and John christened in Coull. Rest of family seemed to have been born in Lumphanan according to census records - apart from Margaret who was much older and born Logie Coldstone 24/1/1804
there is a big gap between Margaret and john b. 1811 approx. i have not found other siblings born between 1804 and 1811
If we are looking at same family i would be interested to share information.
John, Helen, Elspeth Robert, Elizabeth, Ann, Catherine Margaret

Hi Lisa

Information on my Essons and McEwan's only goes to mid 19th century so I can't tell you whether or not we have a connection. I'd need to have more details about both the Cunninghams and Essons before I can be more helpful.

My families are in Aberdeenshire but that doesn't rule out some of them moving to Perthshire in the intervening time period. The Scots have proved to be a pretty mobile lot in my experience.

I am interested in your John Esson b. Strathdon 1823 and Isabella Lawrie. Your information and mine don't quite gel but then I may learn something here..

My Isabella Lawrie was born 1825 in Leochel Cushnie. She had a child William Esson but appears not have been married to the father John b. 1823 Strahdon. I do have a marriage for her to Donald MacEwan in 1856 in Old Machar and 1881 census information confirms that.

Please email me with your information regarding your Isobel Lawrie ( nee Dixie) It sounds like I might have to unravel something.
Not a lot. One of the things I found frustrating about my father when he was alive, was that he never said much about his family. I'll talk to my mother and see what she's dug up over the years and let you know.... if I can ever get off the phone!

Esson - Aberdeen

Good evening

I am stuck and need help advise.

I have found the marriage record of John Esson McKay on 17/10/1872 to Ann Allan. My problem is that it lists his father as being Alexander Esson and mother I think it states as Jessie Rennie.

I am trying to find out why his father would have a different surname.

His residence at the time of his marriage is 179 West North Street Aberdeen however the 1 of the 179 may be a mark and so the address may be just 79. Is there anyway I can find out who was living at this address? I have tried the 1871 census on scotlands people but have been unable to pinpoint the address.

Tonight I was inspired to look for Johns death certificate to check his fathers name however found that box was blank - arghhh!!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Suzanne
I believe something
happened to Thomas, Elliza, and Violet between
1905 & 1914 because during that time Olive and Stanley
were in a Home and ran away when they were around
11 and 9.
Hello,

Would anyone have a connection with George Esson (b. 1830 in Insch) married Isabella Bannerman (b. 1838 in Forgue)?

Their children would have been Isabella Cruickshank Esson (b. 1864) who married John Coutts; George (b. 1868); William Bannerman Esson (b. 1870); Alexander (b. 1873); Elizabeth (b. 1876?), and Ann (b. 1882?) All children were born in Insch.

Thank you,
Eleanor Pagano
Essons, Ballater, Scotland (Aberdeen)

My Great-Grandmother Jessie Esson was born
and raised in Ballater, Scotland. She came to
Canada in the early 1900s, but I'm not sure what
year. I know one of her sisters came with
her as she is listed as a witness at Jessie's
wedding. I would appreciate any other information
anyone can provide if anybody has any. This is
what I know:

Her parents names were James Esson, and Jane Smith.
Their children: Esabella born Jan. 21 1882
Jessie Anne born 1883
Charles born 1884
Jean born May 22 ????
Willie Ross born 1890
Christina D born 1892
May born 1886

I know that James was 64 when he died on Nov. 9th,
but I don't know what year. He was buried in
Tullich churchyard in Ballater. His wife, Jane, died
at age 79, but I don't know what year. In Jane's
obituary she is listed as having only one son, William,
who was killed in action in France in 1919. We
believe Charles died very young so wasn't mentioned.

Thanks in advance for your help.
