There was a lot of time and research put into the Estep books, a lot of it was done looking at actual records. However, as with any research you find - it's a gathering tool and in genealogy is not proven unless you have the paper trail. I have found it very valuable in collecting information on my line of the Esteps

One more with an Estep Native American tale.

My grandmother Betty (b. W.Va.1926) said she lived with her grandfather, Shadrack (Shady) Estep, who was a "full-blooded" Native American. They living on a farm in West Virginia when my grandmother was a child.

I have found one 1920 census record from West Virginia where it looks like Shady's race was change from something to white but beyond that I have nothing. In fact, that particular census record is difficult to decipher since my greatgran, Mary (Betty's mother), and Shady are listed as "roomers" on the census report (i.e. it's not even clear that they are father and daughter on the census).

I'e been operating under the assumption that perhaps Shady was Black, not Native American. I was fascinated when I saw all the Native American Estep posts in the Estep forums.

Any advice on the best resources to try for Native American research?

Thanks!
I appreciate the offer of the info Joanna....these are not my lines of Estep....I only found this info while searching out my line of this family....as you and any other Estep researcher knows there are allot of Johns... Williams... Shadrachs and Samuels in the Esteps...even a few Moses and Thomas thrown in for good measure...so many even in the same generation....I saved info because I wanted to make sure the info I was putting into my tree for my line was true and correct....then I saved everything else just in case someone else needed that extra little bit of help....and over the years this has come into play more than once.....I have been at this research for 12 years now.....and as always I will share what ever I have with anyone else looking for info on the Estep surname....
after all we are all family....God Bless....

Re: Jacob Estep, b 1877

Yes, I have all those censuses. I've searched this line for many years.

I do realize that Charles is listed as a "boarder", but that doesn't mean he is not the son of Nancy. He fits the same age, he's an estep, Sarah Anna is definitely her daughter. Jacob is listed as her son, but he is actually a grandson. Samuel seem to be out of town for some time. He took his family up from WV to OH about the time of the Civil War, which he was in. He is out of the picture until 1900ish as Samuel and Nancy are not together during that time frame.I am figuring they may have reunited after Adam Roush died in about 189ish. I have the death date just not in front of me.

There is a Meigs Co, OH record for a Nancy Estep and Adam Roush marrying in 13 Nov 1875. Adam Roush's first wife Maria Mcnamee died before 1875. The only thing I have not found is any divorce record between Sam and Nancy. I have an affidavit of Samuel's in the 1890s and he is in ID. The Samuel/Nancy family are definitely not a family unit from 1870-1900, however. They moved to TN about the time James Edward was in Cannon Co TN. He married his second wife there. Sarah, dau of Sam and Nancy is there as well. Charles and Barbara moved to Iowa.I have yet to find anyone who is searching Jacob's line.

The only story I could get from family regarding Jacob is that ggrandfather James Edward Estep married when he was very young. Not sure about that. He was born in 1857 and Jacob was born in 1877. I always suspected the Margaret Turner who married Edward Estep in 1875 in Jackson Co, WV could possibly be the mother of Jacob. It is certain she did not raise him so may have possibly died in childbirth.

Are you from this line? Linda

Jacob Estep, b 1877

I'm trying to find the death date and place of burial for Jacob Estep.

Jacob has been erroneously linked to Charles Estep on the Family Search website. Charles is the brother of James Edward who is the father of Jacob Estep.

Jacob Estep (James Edward, Samuel Emmet, Pleasant, Joel) was born in Anderson Co., KY, in 1877, most likely in Louisville. He is the son of James Edward Estep and his first wife who is yet unknown.

He married, in Meigs Co.,OH, on 18 Oct 1894 to Adeline (Addie) Jane McBride, the daughter of Laurence McBride and Sarah Borham. She was born 10 Oct 1879, in Sutton, Meigs Co., OH. She married 2nd John Armentrout before 1909; she died 3 Nov 1935 in Columbus, FranklinCo., OH.

Children of Jacob Estep/Addie McBride:

George Estep, b. 3 July 1895 in Middleport, Meigs, OH, and died before 1900 as he is not listed on the 1900 census.
Carroll Estep, b. 20 Dec 1897, Meigs Co.,OH;married Beatrice L. (unknown) about 1920 in OH.; died 24 Nov 1972 in Evansville,Vanderburgh, IN and is buried in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Jacob is enumerated on the 1880 census as living in the household of Adam Roush. Also in the household is Adam's wife, Nancy (Baldwin) (Estep) Roush and her children, Charles and Sarah, and Adam's son George.

Jacob enlisted as a Private in Company L of the Seventh Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Middleport OH, 25 April 1898. He was muster- in 13 May 1898. Jacob was listed in a muster roll at Middleport, Meigs, OH, on 25 Apr 1898. He was muster-out 6 Nov 1898 in Columbus, Ohio.

Jacob is not enumberated on the 1900 census with his wife and child, but she is listed as "married". His wife, Addie (McBride) Estep, married a second time around 1909 to John Armentrout. Family story has it that Jacob died in a fire in possibly a movie theater.

If anyone has any link to this line, please contact me, Linda Reed, at SaintLinda@aol.com

I would like to have documentation for the parentss of Cornelius Estep, born 1780-84 Died in 1840 in Kanawha County WV. The informtaion I have is from the 1810 census from Adair County KY, and Deed book C, page 112, Boone County W. Before 1847 Boone Co. was part of Kanawha County, VA. I worked in an LDS library for several years in WV and got my information from Kanawha and Boone county records. I'm anxious to compare records.

My mother is no longer living so first hand information isn't available to me. My grandmother lived her entire life in W.
Re: Jacob Estep, b 1877

Hi Linda,

The family of Samuel Emmett Estep is definitely a bit confusing.

On the 1860 census Samuel and Nancy Estep are living in Blue Creek, VA, with their children James E., Charles E. and Enoch.

On the 1870 census only Nancy Estep and children James E., Charles E., Enoch, and Sarah J. are enumerated without her husband Samuel. They are living in Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio. (Those who believe Enoch died as a baby please take note Enoch is 10 years old in 1870.)

The 1880 census shows their son Charles E. Estep living with the Roush family in Minersville, Sutton Twp., Ohio. Nancy Roush sure looks like she could be Nancy Baldwin Estep, but this is not an accurate assumption. Charles E. Estep, 22, who lists his occupation as a miner, is definitely listed as a boarder, not a son, in the Roush household. The other two younger children are listed as Sarah Ann Roush and Jacob Roush, not Esteps.

On the 1900 census Samuel Estep and wife Nancy Estep are in Cannon County, Tennessee, the same place as their son James Edward Estep is living with his family in 1900. Samuel and Nancy list they have been married 45 years and had 5 children born with only 3 still living. They are now 65 years old. The month and year of birth listed for them on the 1900 census makes it certain that this is definitely Samuel Emmett Estep, born Feb 1835, and Nancy Estep born Apr 1835. If they have been married for 45 years, then his wife Nancy could not have married Adam Roush. Also, the confirmed marriage date of 27 Dec 1855 for Samuel Emmett Estep and Nancy Baldwin jives with the 45 years of marriage listed for them on the 1900 census in Cannon Co., TN.

Cheron
cheron@cox.net
