Re: Texas / Estills

Jean and Cindy - I don't know if you're still out there - since it's been over a year and more of your posts - BUT - Gus Estill is my great great grandfather - through his first wife, Sarah Johnson. Gus' 1st living child (the legitimate first child died at childbirth) - was Margaret (Maggie) Estill Thomas - she is my great grandmother. Her husband's (Robert L. Thomas) sister is Maggie Thomas who ended up marrying Gus Estill - as his 3rd wife. That's all I know - my grandma, Addy Thomas Wallis, was estranged from her family at early age - and never told anyone about her family. So we are very eager to hear. Jean - you said you had lots of information about Estill and Thomas - you too - Cindy? Right now - we mainly want to know if there was Indian blood in the Estill or Thomas line. Grandma Addy did share with one of my uncles when he was a boy - that Gus Estill - and I guess wife, Maggie - would dress up in Indian clothing and disappear for days. But that's all she shared. Addy loved Maggie - who was like a mother to her - Addy remembered brushing Maggie's long dark hair. Can you give me any more information?

Re: Gen. James Madison Estill

Here is a picture of the general and a short blib from the blog.

*************

James Madison7 Estill (James6 - James5 - Wallace4 - John3 - Thomas2 - Henry1)

James Madison Estill is an ongoing research topic for me. He is my 3rd Great Grandfather on my Jones side. He was feared and respected but none the less appeared to be quite self absorbed, elitist, and ethically questionable. Below are some of the better resources I have pulled together so far.

The short of it is that James Madison Estill was born in 1811 in Madison, Kentucky to James Jr and Mary Eddings (Rodes) Estill. He was the grandson of the famous Captain James Estill that died in 1782 at the hands of Wyandotte indians in the Battle of Little Mountain (also called Estill's Defeat). JME married Martha Ann Woods, had 2 children in Kentucky and in 1842 moved to Missouri where he built a grain mill and also worked with the U.S. Government in building Leavenworth prison (still looking for data on this as Leavenworth did not open until the 1890s). He had 4 more children in Missouri but his business was eventually considered unsuccessful and he sold his properties and moved to San Francisco about 1849/50 with his family soon to follow. In California he befriended General Vallejo and went into contract with the young state's government providing beef to the native indians and developing the states first prison, San Quentin. He was elected as a state senator. Had dealings with trying to establish the state capitol in Vallejo and Benicia and had one more child in California. He died on Apr 26 1859 at the age of 48.

Individual Facts:

Name: James Madison Estill
Sex: Male

Father: Estill, James
Mother: Rodes, Mary Eddings

Birth: 1811 in Madison, Kentucky
Marriage: 22 Sep 1831 in Madison, Kentucky to Martha Ann Woods
Census: 1840 in Madison Kentucky
Census: 1850 in Solano California
Elected: 1852 in Solano and Napa, State Senator
Death: 26 Apr 1859 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California

Children:
Estill, James Rodes (died without issue and unmarried)
Estill, Mary Elizabeth (married William Re-Tallack Garrison, 4 children)
Estill, Josephine (believed to have died without issue and unmarried)
Estill, Martha (married Craig and was either widowed or divorced by 32)
Estill, Florence (believed to have died without issue and unmarried)
Estill, Maud (married James Dana Jones, 2 children)
Maud Estill (1856-1908)

Always looking for more information.

Maud8 Estill (James Madison7 - James6 - James5 - Wallace4 - John3 - Thomas2 - Henry1)

I am still far from considering Maud vetted to even a minor degree. She is my Great-Great-Grandmother on my Jones side. She was the youngest child of General James Madison Estill (from earlier post) and Martha Ann Woods. She was born after Martha arrived in California from her cross-Panama trek from Missouri to join her husband who had come via wagon train. I need to dig through my notes to verify dates and logic but I know that Maud married James Dana Jones, a lawyer from New York and son to J. Wyman Jones and eventual disinherited son to the family fortune. Maud had 2 girls with James Dana Jones, Edith and Eleanor. James was reported to have a drinking problem and was divorced to Maud and then died young. Maud then lived in San Rafael California with her girls. She reportedly provided shelter to many after the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

** Note that in some documents her given name is spelled "Maude".

Individual Facts:

Name: Maud Estill
Sex: Female

Father: Estill, James Madison
Mother: Woods, Martha Ann

Birth: 17 Feb 1856 in California
Census: 1860 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California
Marriage: 24 May 1878 in Manhattan, NY, NY to James Dana JONES
Census: 1880 in Englewood, Bergen, New Jersey
Census: 1900 in Russian River, Sonoma, California
Death: 23 May 1908

Children:
Jones, Edith Dana
Jones, Eleanor Estill

*********

From my blog at:
http://congdonfamilies.blogspot.com/2009/06/maud-estill-1856...
Sorry, I am unaware of any Cherokee heritage on my Estill side. I would love to see what you have so far. I am a little confused about the names in your post. As far as I know, there was not Annie Mae or Mary Alice born to James and Martha.

I have posted much more about James Madison Estill and his wife Martha Ann Woods at my blog:

http://congdonfamilies.blogspot.com/2009/02/general-james-ma...
Estill in Texas looking for Biological parents

I am on a search for my Uncle's biological family. He was born in Brownfield, Texas the year of 1952 and he had a brother born in 1950. They both were given up to foster care in 1954. Their biological last name was Estill. We do not know if that was the mother's biological last name or fathers. My Uncles birth name was Darrel Jean Estill. I am hoping to try to find someone who knew a family member that lived in or around Brownfield in this time frame.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
Cindy,
Let me see if I can come up with some names that will match what you know.
Thomas Estill was born about 1755 NJ. He married Rachel Hannah Roswell who was born about 1760. They both died in Scott County KY, Thomas in 1816, and Rachel in 1820.

Thomas and Rachel had a son Thomas, born 1791 VA. He married 3 Feb 1814 in Sott Co, KY to Caroline Charity Wiggins who was born 1796 NC.

I just can't make the connection to James. Is he a son of Thomas and Charity? Thomas and Rachel had a son Stephen who named a son James, but he was born in 1840.

I see your Augusta Estill in the 1870 census. He is 5 years old and he is in the household of James Estill 34 KY, and Elizabeth Estill 29 KY.

I have been to Scott County, KY and done a lot of research there on the ESTILL line. I would love to share with you. Can you make this last connection for me?

We are obviously cousins!! It will be so fun doing some of this research together.

Your Estill Cousin in Washington State,
Carolyn

Hello Cindy,
I am also descended from Thomas Estill and Rachel Roswell. However, I have no Augustus.
Perhaps you have more descendancy information on another son. I have done a lot
of research on the Estills in KY, but when they left KY I lost track of some of
them.

Can you please fill me in on the connection between Augustus and Thomas and Rachel?

Thanks,
Carolyn
In Washington State
Gen. James Madison Estill

Hello. I am looking for info on James Madison Estill (sometimes written as Estell). He migrated from Kentucky to Missouri to the Bay Area California. He often went by the title General although I have no military record. He was a state senator for California and helped establish San Quentin Prison. His family apparently lived in Benecia CA while he seems to have lived mainly in a hotel in San Francisco.

He is a Grandson of Capt. James Estill.

Sean Ryan sean.rockwell@gmail.com
Hi Wes!!

I think you mean't Daniel and Sallie's children. Not Dudley and Sallie. But yes, they had a son named Ibzan. He was born on Nov. 30, 1826 in Madison County, Kentucky. He died in Glasgow, Missouri on Aug. 25, 1896. He is buried in Richland Cemetery along with his wife, Martha Ann McCrary. I have listed all the Estills in Richland Cemetery on findagrave.com. I put a picture of Ibzan's headstone on there. I'll be happy to send you all the info I have on Daniel and Sallie's other children, including my GGrandpa Sidney. Ancestry.com will not let me send attachments through there site. So I will need your e-mail. Mine is silentpcgal@charter.net. If you did mean Dudley's children I have their info as well. Death certificates also. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I am looking for the burial location of Dudley Estill in Parker County, Texas. A genealogy site listed his burial place as Weatherford Cemetery. According to the Parker County txgenweb site there is no Weatherford Cemetery. His wife, Mary Louisa Hackley, died in Fort Worth in 1907 but her death certificate does not list a burial location. Most of their children are buried in the Fort Worth area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Lanette Estill-Cooper

Hello, Carol,
I never did get the reply you sent, just happened to be re-checking Estill site and found your message. Yes, would love to year from you. Your husband and I share the same great-great grandmother. His great-grandfather then, would have been William Allison (son of Julia Ursual Allanson and ?)and my great-grandmother was his half-sister Sarah Ann Estill (daughter of Julia Ursula Allanson and William Estill).
We have always had Julia's last name spelled Allanson, not Allison as you have. This may have made finding relatives more difficult for me!!
Where are you from? We are in Canada. William's half sister Sarah Ann Estill married John William Parker and they had 7 children. They immigrated, thanks to the help of the Salvation Army in 1910 with the 7 children to help settle a Salvation Army colony called "Coombs" on Vancouver Island, BC. My grandfather was the youngest, 9 months old when they came here.
I often wondered about William Allanson (Allison). I would love to hear more. Please get in touch.
Best regards,
Kerry

Looking for more info on my Estill family. John Estill b Nov 1800 (son of John Estill and Ann m/s unknown) married Hannah Newton b Sept 1804 in Pickering (daughter of William Newton and Grace Poad) 1825 in Allerston. They had 8 children: William Estill b 1828 in Saltersage (my great-grat grandfather), Jane Estill b 1826, John Estill b 1830, Newton Estill b 1832, Grace Estill b 1834, Ann Estill b 1836, Hannah Estill b 1838 and Thomas Estill b 1840.

My great-great grandfather William Estill was married twice:

First wife Hannah Hick b 1821 in Lockton, daughter of Thomas Hick and Hannah m/s not known. I have a bit more information on some of these descendants.

His second wife was Julia Ursula Allanson b 1838 in Broxa, daughter of Joseph Allanson (or Allison as sometimes noted) and wife Ann m/s not known. William and Julia had 7 children, all born in Allerston, as follows
Sarah Ann Estill b 1866 in Allerston (my great-grandmother who married John William Parker, had 7 children and immigrated to Canada with her husband and all the children in 1910)
Ade Estill b 1868 (married William Smith Rodda in 1980)
John Henry Estill b 1871
Laura Allanson Estill b 1871 (married Harry Coulson, d 1971)
ElizabethUrsula Estill b 1872
Julia Estill b 1874
George Estill b 1877
William Allanson (Julia Ursula Allanson's son before her marriage to William Estill)b 1860 Broxa
I found a James born March-31-1840 in Scott County, Kentucky, and died Feb-4-1929 in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, Texas He was buried in Sturdivant Cemetary, Palo Pinto county, Texas. He was the son of Stephen Estill, and Abigail Roberts. I see an Irwin Madison Thomas, And Charity Wiggins that had a son named James Irwin Thomas, but he was born March 1897. I have Thomas Estill born in 1761. NJ. Rachel Roswell born in 1765 in Virginia. The date, and county is right on what I have on there death!! Just not the year they were born?? I am not a member of Ancestry, My sister sent me all this info on paper!! My Dad is full blooded Indian we are tring to find out as much as we can about our family too?? I would love to know more if you can help me too!! I hope what I'm sending you is helpful!! I copied what you wrote to make sure I answered all your questions if you were wondering. Your family Cindy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cindy,
Let me see if I can come up with some names that will match what you know.
Thomas Estill was born about 1755 NJ. He married Rachel Hannah Roswell who was born about 1760. They both died in Scott County KY, Thomas in 1816, and Rachel in 1820.
Thomas and Rachel had a son Thomas, born 1791 VA. He married 3 Feb 1814 in Sott Co, KY to Caroline Charity Wiggins who was born 1796 NC.
I just can't make the connection to James. Is he a son of Thomas and Charity? Thomas and Rachel had a son Stephen who named a son James, but he was born in 1840.
I see your Augusta Estill in the 1870 census. He is 5 years old and he is in the household of James Estill 34 KY, and Elizabeth Estill 29 KY.
I have been to Scott County, KY and done a lot of research there on the Estill line. I would love to share with you. Can you make this last connection for me?
We are obviously cousins!! It will be so fun doing some of this research together.
Your Estill Cousin in Washington State,
Carolyn
I am looking for information on my grandfather Robert Foster Estill born Aug. 3, 1897 in Mansfield, Ohio(son of Charles and Minerva Gerke Estill - lived/died in San Antonio, Texas) who married Thelma Duderstadt Estill Sept 20, 1928 in Karnes City, Texas. They had one son named Don Stayton Estill born Oct. 27, 1930. They divorced before my dad was born in 1930. Robert F. Estill may have died in the 1960's (?). Cannot find death certificate. His brother Gerald Estill lived in Seguin, Texas and was a well known artist in Texas. Uncle Gerald had one daughter named Geraldine Estill. We met them before he died and had our photo taken with Uncle Gerald. My grandfather worked in printing companies because I have designs and prints with his name on them. He continued to send my grandmother letters and these prints. We believe he may have remarried and had some children. Dad understood he may have a half sister possibly in the Dallas, Texas area. Cannot find anything on this man. Any help would be appreciated. Stories have his family coming from Ohio, Virginia and Kentucky.
