Hi Linda, I just responded to your post about native ancestry. I didn't realize you're an Etheridge. My great-grandfather was Robert E. Etheridge, born abt 1848-1850 (Wilson Co., then Edgecombe) and died bet Nov 1882 & Aug 1889 in Wilson Co. We haven't been able to find his parents in our 20-year search. His Jan 1870 marriage register info to Mary Ann Forbes in Wilson Co. lists his parents as K.H. Barrett and Becky Gardner. I can't make sense of this and have found no one by either of these names of an age that could have been his parents. I understand from Wilson Co. genealogists that Wilson Co. Etheridges descended from Thomas Etheridge from Norfolk Co., VA. His great-grandsons Caleb & Lott appear to be the progenitors of the Edgecombe Co. Etheridges. The Saratoga Etheridges in Wilson Co. appear to have descended from a Simon Etheridge, also a Thomas Etheridge descendent from Pamlico/Hyde Co. who left descendants in Wilson Co. before returning the VA. Willoughby Etheridge in Wilson Co. appears to be the progenitor of those Saratoga Etheridges. There is also a Frederick Etheridge in Edgecombe Co. that has hazy ancestry that forms yet another Etheridge line.

Hi Cindy, I'm the great-granddaughter of Robert E. Etheridge, born about 1848-1850 and died between 1885-1889 in Wilson Co., NC. I haven't been able to find his parents, but Willoughby Etheridge had a child name Robert listed on an 1860 census who was born about 1853. Robert does not appear on any later census listing for Willoughby & Nancy. I know that Willoughby died without a will about March 1893. Robert, my great-grandfather was dead by then, but his children would have been listed as heirs, I think, in Willoughby's estate records if in fact my great-grandfather was Willoughby's son. I haven't found them in Willoughby's estate records. Do you know of a Robert Etheridge, Willoughby's son? I'd be delighted to learn that I have at last found Robert E. Etheridge's parents.

I am searching for a Jeremias/Jeremiah Etheridge who was born Sept. 1821, Ga. died Apr. 1886
His parents were b. in N.C.
md. Sophronia Unknown born May 1834 in Alabama. Her parents were born in S.C.
I have them listed in the 1870 Census, Fayette Twnship, Calhoun Co., Arkansas and the 1880 Census in Jackson Twnship, Dallas Co., Arkansas. In 1910, Bradley Co., Arkansas, Sophronia is listed with her dau. Sarah J. Cranston, and grandchildren.
Jeremias/Jeremiah and Sophronias' children were Sarah J. b. 1859, who married John H. Harbour
and Thomas Joseph b. 1854.
Any information about this family will be appretiated.

I am trying to find any information on my Grandmother's mother. I have no maiden name for her. Listed on her childrens birth certificates are the first name of Britania, Brittania, Tain, Taney. She was born in 1903, in North Carolina. All of her children were in Tyrrell or Columbia North Carolina. She was married to Walter Etheridge (b.1894-d.1939). Walter was a fisherman and farmer. Together they had several childern, one of them Katie Lee Etheridge Dowdy (1923-1999) my paternal grandmother.

From the book "Family History of Elijah Etheridge and His Descendants with Lateral Lines", by Bessie Richardson Etheridge

"Although records of the family in England are only fragmentary, it is possible that the Etheridges of America are descendaned from the Essex lines, or Surrey. One of the first in America was Edward Etheridge, who settled in Massachusetts about 1646. So far as we know he left no progeny in this county. Henry Etheridge, the first of the family in the South, was living in Northhampton County, Virginia, as early as the year 1654. ... According to family tradition, the progenitor of the Norfolk County family of Etheridge in Virginia was Thomas Etheridge, who died there in 1671. Norfolk County, Va., and Lower Norfolk County, Va., which borders on north-east North Carolina, and all of east North Carolina is thickly populated with Etheridges.

Our particular branch of the Etheridge family in Georgia is descended from the Norfolk County family in Virginia, some of whom moved into North Carolina and settled first in Hyde County, Precinct of Bath, on the Pemlico Sound. Simon Etheridge, 1728, in Hyde County, Malachi Etheridge, Malachi, Jr., Jonathan Willoughby, and Ephraim, paid taxes, signed deeds, and bought land. In 1730 Simon Etheridge and wife Mary sold land and gave deed to Thomas Nash, of Norfolk County, Virginia, said Parcel being known as Chinquapin Point, on East side of Matchepimgo River, Beaufort Co. (See deed book 2 page 75, Beaufort and Hyde Court, 1731.)

The above Thomas Nash married Dinah Etheridge, daughter of Thomas Etheridge. In the will of Thomas Etheridge, 1752, he reserves a plot of ground 20 by 50 feet "on my Manor Plantation whereon the bodies of my deceased ancesters were buried, to be reserved for a burial place, and not at any time to be sold or transferred."

In 1788 and 1796 Malachi Etheridge gave deeds to lands in Beaufort Co. All old wills in counties of Hyde, Beaufort, and Martin were destroyed when courthouses in said counties were burned. So the records there are old deed and land grants and patents from the Crown. There is no way to estblish family lines definitely, but it seems evident that Simon was the progenitor of Malachi, Sr., Johnathan, Ephraim, and Malachi, Jr. Elijah and Willoughby were possibly sons of Malachi, Sr., However, that is mere surmise." "In August, 1866, Wm.. D. Etheridge made a business trip New York. On the return trip a case of Asiatic Cholera was discovered on board the ship. All passengers, numbering 19, were landed at quarantine station on Tybee Island until all danger was past. Etheridge fell victim to the desease, and was buried on the island, where his body remained for 5 years. It was then disinterred and placed beside his wife in Laurel Grove Cemetery." - B. R. E.

Yes, James' wife was Fannie Santos. My grandfather's generation was unclear on where their father James was born -- they suspected in NC. I found James listed in Norfolk address books (precursor of phone books) in the late 1800s, listed at the same address as Isaiah Etheridge, and Isaiah ran the lumberyard as "Isaiah Etheridge and Son". Maybe James wasn't the son, but he did take over the lumber business later. I found similar info in the census records -- at some point they quit saying "born in NC" and claimed "born in VA". Looking further back at pre Civil War census info is tough as they only list head of household, and the Etheridges used the same durn names over and over. I think I can track them to Currituck, not too far from today's Moyock, but I'm pretty much stuck. This would make some sense as evidently they lumbered their property on both sides of the line per family lore.

Is there an Isaiah Etheridge in your family tree? Isaiah Etheridge, perhaps born in 1807 in Currituck Country NC, was the father of my great-grandfather James Edward Etheridge (1852-1904). Both lived in Norfolk VA by the 1880 census. The family owned and lumbered property property on both sides of the state line. I do not have a spouse's name for Isaiah; the census in 1880 lists only Isaiah and James in the household so perhaps she had already died. I can't track Isaiah back further. We are trying to track down the parents of a James E. Etheridge (my great-grandfather also) who was born Nov. 27, 1852 and died on February 23, 1904; he lived and was buried in Norfolk VA, but I cannot find out where he was born and so do not know if Isaiah is his father. Are you sure about that? What source did you use, or is some of your information just family history? James' wife was Fannie Santos. Yet, one of the censuses we found listed his birthplace as Virginia.

The Ethridge/Etheridge family of North Florida will have its first family reunion Saturday, March 21, 2009, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm CST in the old Frink School Gymnasium building at the "Panhandle Pioneer Settlement" which is a part of Sam B. Atkins Park in Blountstown, Florida. All descendants and extended family are encouraged to attend and bring a covered dish of their favorite Ethridge recipe along with their Ethridge pictures and stories.
This line originated with Samuel Ethridge (@1816-@1885), who was originally from North Carolina. Samuel is first found in the 1850 US Census for Decatur County, Georgia, with his second wife, Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge (@1819 - @1863), whom he married in 1850. In 1860 he was living in Jackson County, Florida and by 1870 he had moved into Calhoun County. When he married Sarah he already had children James (@1838), Arlenas (@1839), Ann (@1843), Martha (1845-1914), and Nancy (@1847). All were born in Georgia. Sarah had a daughter, Susan (1837), by her first husband, Richard Goodwin. There was also a son, John, but we are unsure of whether he was Samuel’s or Sarah’s. Samuel’s first wife is unknown.
Samuel and Sarah had three children together. Their names were Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-@1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905).
Sarah died sometime in the early 1860’s and Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott in 1863. She died sometime before 1870, exact date unknown at this time.
Not much is known about Samuel and Unknown’s children James, Arlenas, Ann and Nancy. Their daughter, Martha, married William Henry Beck and lived out her life in Calhoun County, Florida. Her children were Elizabeth (@1869), Nancy (1872-1952) married William Mann/Manning, Hennie (@1874), Jesse (@1878) married Mary Ramsey, Tinetha Holland and Mamie Pilgrim, Kizzie (@1879) married J.D. Clifton, Tony (@1882) married Mamie Wooten, Florance (@1883) married Francis H. Clark, and Edith (@1886) married Henry J. Wilkes.
Nothing is known about the son, John, other than his birth year and that he was born in Georgia.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Enoch, married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) and moved to Pensacola, Florida around 1880. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959), Sarah Francis (1877-1958) married John William Fowler, Isaac Samuel (1880-1962) married Josephine Tonnage and Nora Sophronia Freeman, Mary E. (1883-1967) married Joseph Robert Grimes, Nancy Ann (1886-1943) married ? Hart, John Daniel (1888-1965), and Ellen Jane (1892-1963) married Herbert Archie Mayhair.
Samuel and Sarah’s daughter, Francis Lucinda, married Wilie A. Kent (1839-before 1910) and remained in Calhoun County. She and Wilie both died sometime prior to 1910, exact date and reason are unknown at this time. Their children are Samuel William (@1874), Sophronia (@1876), Lucinda V. (1886-1938) married George C. Flowers and ? Rogers, Wiley S. (1893), and Martha J. (@1895). After Francis and Wilie’s death the children all lived with the oldest son, Samuel William, in Cowarts, Houston, Alabama. It is thought that Francis Lucinda was born in Alabama.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Isaac Samuel, married Henrietta Davis Burk (@1852-@1930) and remained in Calhoun County. Henrietta had a son, John G., Jr., by her marriage to John G. Burk when she married Isaac Samuel. Together, she and Isaac Samuel had six more children: Isaac Henry (1879-1967) married Willie Belle Ledbetter, James M. “Boss” (1881-1962) married Della Ann Armstrong and Lara B., Rewen Charly (@1882-bef. 1900), Minnie (1883-1883), Lewis Ellis (1888-1974) married Lora E. Durden, and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Many of the children, great grandchildren and so forth later moved into the Gadsden County area.

Farmer Killed By Lightning

Mildlothian, Texas, August 2 - William Etheridge; a farmer living one mile west of this place, was killed by lightning about 2 o'clock today. He was reclining against a wire fence in the horse lot at the time. The lightning struck the fence some distance from him. Etheridge never spoke after being struck. He leaves a wife and one child. The unfortunate man had only been a resident here for a few months, his former home being near Calhoun, Louisiana.
