Alas, my Etheridge/Ethridge was very poor...no slaves, just three wives and lots of children!! Unfortunately I have not been able to find any of his siblings or his parents....as of yet!!

What's your line? Where did your Etheridge/Ethridge "originate"?

I live in Wisconsin. My grandfather was Cecil Ethridge. The story passed down to me was that there were two brothers that came by ship. One(Ethridge) went north and the other(Etheridge) went south. The one going south had slaves.

Mark Ethridge in Texarkana

I inherited a box of photo albums from my aunt, Gracie May Young-Westmoreland. She was born in Texarkana, AR in 1913 and went to school at North Heights (AR) and Spring Lake Park Elementary (TX side).
There are a lot of photos I cannot identify. One has the name and date: {Mark Ethridge 1930}. He is a nice looking young man (maybe very late teens or early 20's). It is a full view, in a garden and a very well preserved pics.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know this person. I can email a copy if you want to see him.

I am at a standstill as I research my AA/Native WEEDEN/WHEEDEN/WEEDON/WEELDON ancestors.
I find the ETHERIDGE surname connected (ROSE) in VA, and believe that my ancestors originated there.
The surname may have some connection to GEORGE WHELDON, free Negro of 1810 Westmoreland, but am unable to trace.
My family is found first in NC in 1870, and my ggrandfather,
WM LAWRENCE WEELDON, Black is listed as born in 1829 SC.
After 12yrs of research, have heard from no one who claims
kinship.
Could there possibly be some kin out there who can be of help?

Ethridge/Etheridge Family Reunion - NW Florida, Alabama, etc.

The Ethridge/Etheridge family of North Florida will have its first family reunion Saturday, March 21, 2009, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm CST in the old Frink School Gymnasium building at the "Panhandle Pioneer Settlement" which is a part of Sam B. Atkins Park in Blountstown, Florida. All descendants and extended family are encouraged to attend and bring a covered dish of their favorite Ethridge recipe along with their Ethridge pictures and stories.
This line originated with Samuel Ethridge (@1816-@1885), who was originally from North Carolina. Samuel is first found in the 1850 US Census for Decatur County, Georgia, with his second wife, Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge (@1819 - @1863), whom he married in 1850. In 1860 he was living in Jackson County, Florida and by 1870 he had moved into Calhoun County. When he married Sarah he already had children James (@1838), Arlenas (@1839), Ann (@1843), Martha (1845-1914), and Nancy (@1847). All were born in Georgia. Sarah had a daughter, Susan (1837), by her first husband, Richard Goodwin. There was also a son, John, but we are unsure of whether he was Samuel’s or Sarah’s. Samuel’s first wife is unknown.
Samuel and Sarah had three children together. Their names were Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-@1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905).
Sarah died sometime in the early 1860’s and Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott in 1863. She died sometime before 1870, exact date unknown at this time.
Not much is known about Samuel and Unknown’s children James, Arlenas, Ann and Nancy. Their daughter, Martha, married William Henry Beck and lived out her life in Calhoun County, Florida. Her children were Elizabeth (@1869), Nancy (1872-1952) married William Mann/Manning, Hennie (@1874), Jesse (@1878) married Mary Ramsey, Tinetha Holland and Mamie Pilgrim, Kizzie (@1879) married J.D. Clifton, Tony (@1882) married Mamie Wooten, Florance (@1883) married Francis H. Clark, and Edith (@1886) married Henry J. Wilkes.
Nothing is known about the son, John, other than his birth year and that he was born in Georgia.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Enoch, married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) and moved to Pensacola, Florida around 1880. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959), Sarah Francis (1877-1958) married John William Fowler, Isaac Samuel (1880-1962) married Josephine Tonnage and Nora Sophronia Freeman, Mary E. (1883-1967) married Joseph Robert Grimes, Nancy Ann (1886-1943) married ? Hart, John Daniel (1888-1965), and Ellen Jane (1892-1963) married Herbert Archie Mayhair.
Samuel and Sarah’s daughter, Francis Lucinda, married Wilie A. Kent (1839-before 1910) and remained in Calhoun County. She and Wilie both died sometime prior to 1910, exact date and reason are unknown at this time. Their children are Samuel William (@1874), Sophronia (@1876), Lucinda V. (1886-1938) married George C. Flowers and ? Rogers, Wiley S. (1893), and Martha J. (@1895). After Francis and Wilie’s death the children all lived with the oldest son, Samuel William, in Cowarts, Houston, Alabama. It is thought that Francis Lucinda was born in Alabama.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Isaac Samuel, married Henrietta Davis Burk (@1852-@1930) and remained in Calhoun County. Henrietta had a son, John G., Jr., by her marriage to John G. Burk when she married Isaac Samuel. Together, she and Isaac Samuel had six more children: Isaac Henry (1879-1967) married Willie Belle Ledbetter, James M. “Boss” (1881-1962) married Della Ann Armstrong and Lara B., Rewen Charly (@1882-bef. 1900), Minnie (1883-1883), Lewis Ellis (1888-1974) married Lora E. Durden, and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Many of the children, great grandchildren and so forth later moved into the Gadsden County area.
For more information or to share information on the Ethridge/Etheridge family and the family reunion please contact Ellen (Ethridge) Hulbert at (850) 580-1901 or at ellenhulbert@live.com.
I am researching my own family ancestry and came across your message. I am the grand daughter to Trannie Lou Ethridge, Colt Arkansas. My mother Bessie Irene Pipkin (ethridge) was a sister to Christine Dunn. If you would like to contact me I can give you more information privately. I believe most of Aunt Christine's sisters are now gone. There was Myrtle, Mildred, my mom Bessie who are all deceased now, Estine. I need to contact my sister to see who all may be left now. I believe Uncle James and Uncle Walter are still around, their brother Homer is in a senior center in Arkansas, Aunt Laura Mae, may now be deceased also. Please feel free to email me: rromero@gci.net.

Ethridges of New England spread west. General Information

Unlike the vast Ethridge/Etheridge family of the South, This New England Ethridge family remained quite small. This Ethridge family (as family lore records it) began with three brothers who traveled with the Winthrop Group and whose generations ranged from MA, CT, NH, ME, to New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and other points west.

This family is sometimes confused with Ethridge late-comers from Canada and England by way of the Saint Lawrence and the Maritimes.

The sir-name is ever challenging with strange phonetic spellings that tend to lead a researcher astray.

Beware of the posted genealogies. They contain blaring errors that have corrupted most of the research for this illusive family history.

Most New England Ethridge families remained in the North except for a John who married in KY a southern girl during the Civil war.

I hope this holiday note will greatly help many searchers.

If you have tidbits of Ethridge family history or questions about your own Ethridge family, I look forward to sharing my twenty-plus years of mostly cited information. I too have huge, frustrating gaps in this family history, but pieces do keep falling into place.

Our children need to know what a courageous, hard-working, resourceful family we all can be proud to have come from.

Happy Holidays from your cousin, CCWaters

I have just begun searching this side of my family. My maiden name is Ethridge. My mother, deceased, told me that my father, Bob Ray Ehtridge, changed his name from Etheridge to Ethridge legally. My Gpa was Raymond Etheridge and Gma was Anna Rutherford. My GGpa and GGma was Frank and Louella Whitecotton. My GGGpa and GGGma was Peter and Malela(?). I have some of the names and dates but I can't go any farther back and I am stuck. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
Annessa
John Ethridge born c 1866, son of Martin Van Buren Ethridge b. 1834 Bond Co., IL
Does anyone have information on the children of Martin Van Buren Ethridge, specifically a son named John Ethridge born c1866 in Kansas (possibly Bourbon or Allen Co.)?

Here is what I know -- or think that I know:

Martin was born 1834 in Bond Co., IL - probably the youngest son of Burrell Ethridge. In most census records where I have been able to locate him, he and his children are listed with initials only so I do not know for absolute certain that John was Martin's son.

John Ethridge was married to (????) and had a son named Ernest born in Jan 1892, probably in KS. Ernest's mother died when, or shortly after, Ernest was born. Ernest is found living with his grandfather, Martin V.B. Etherage in the 1900 census of Woods Co., OK Terr.

In 1910 I find John with his wife Rosa (Sproul) who he married c1895 living in Crawford Co., KS with their children Matilda (born in Texas), Elmer born in New Mexico), & Ira (born in Kansas). So far I haven't been able to find either Martin or his grandson (John's son?) Ernest in 1910. I believe that John's brother Joseph/Joe (a son of Martin) was married to Rosa Sproul's sister, Clara Sproul. In 1880 the Sprouls were living in Rockwall Co., TX

Any help in locating more information on John Ethridge would be greatly appreciated.

Ken and Troy,
I was in contact with Miss Lonnie Rae Ethridge regarding Samuel N. Ethridge and his wife, Rebecca J. Woodard from Clarke County, AL and we exchanged quite a bit of information in 2005 because I had information on the Woodard branch of this family. According to Cora Ethridge, Samuel N. Ethridge's father was Anderson Duke Ethridge (b. abt 1802) and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Lynch. Carole Fleming Duvall thought that Anderson Duke Ethridge (Sr.)'s father may have been Samuel E. Ethridge from NC when we corresponded in 2001. She may have more information at this time but I have not been in contact with her recently. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of help.
Sincerely,
Jackie Feldman

Troy, Am retrieving info from my Aunt. She mentioned that she couldn't get back beyond Samuel's father either--at least until about two months ago. It seems that S.N.'s father had two families, one prior to and one after the Civil War. This info surfaced from someone researching the other branch of the family (I guess I'm part of the post-war bunch). Maybe that accounts from the lack of info. Uncle Sam's health is not good and so she's tied up attending to him for the moment. I will be visiting them in the next month or two and will get the info, if I don't receive it before. What is your interest? Are you an Ethridge? Or maybe the other side of the family? Reply to my private email to stay in touch. I don't know how long my subscription to Ancestry.com is going to last.

Contact: Ken@ethridgeandcompany.com

Best wishes for the New Year,

Ken

Dear Sir, Did you ever get a reply to your query? Just found it and feel sure you are talking about my great-grandfather. He moved the family from AL to near Greenville, TX in about 1890. Family story had it that my great-grandmother was concern that the boys would run the risk of getting involved with the night riders if they stayed in AL. GGF and boys went ahead to locate land and move horses then came back for GGM and children. Great Aunt Cora, very little at the time, always remembered losing her hat crossing the Mississippi to TX. I will be back in Dallas over holidays and look for records prepared by my Aunt who is married to current living Samuel N. Ethridge of Denton, TX. Sincerely, Kenneth Ashley Ethridge, Jr.

The Glasco Sun, Cloud County, KS, April 13, 2000, page 3, col. 1&2:
Frank M. Ethridge Died April 4, 2000
Frank Madison Ethridge was born to Robert E. and Mary Davis Bailey Ethridge on June 12, 1911, on a farm near Ada, Kansas. He departed life on Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at the Ottawa County Hospital in Minneapolis, Kansas at the age of 88 years.
Frank grew up on a farm west of Ada. His mother died as a result of the swine flu epidemic when he was seven years old. He attended grade school and high school in Ada, graduating from Ada High School in the Class of 1929. He enjoyed playing football and is still remembered as a hard hitting fullback.
After high school, Frank traveled to California and worked for his half-brother Earl Bailey, and then after having all his possessions stolen in San Diego on his was home, he hitchhiked home, learning what it meant to be penniless and forced to "ride the rails." Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's reconstruction program during the depression. He worked in Kansas and Minnesota and helped build dams, parks, and plant trees.
Frank married Neomi Claudine Beichley, the daughter of Henry and Grace Beichley on March 11, 1935. Early in their marriage, the couple lived in a number of Kansas communities, and two years in Oregon during the depth of the depression and drought years. He worked as an oil well driller, mechanic, farmhand, ranch hand, and in heavy equipment construction in Wichita, and highway maintenance in the mountains of Oregon.
In 1941 Frank and Neomi moved onto the farm in the Brewer neighborhood southwest of Minneapolis and began farming. In 1945 they moved to the farm west of Ada on which he had grown up. Several years later, they bought their own farm located north of Ada and moved onto it after Frank spent the winter remodeling the house. They lived there until 1957 when they sold their farm and moved to Bonneville, Arkansas. While in Arkansas, Frank worked for a gas and oil drilling company, wildcatting for deep gas deposits.
On May 28, 1958, Frank and his family moved back to Kansas. He and Neomi bought the "Sheffield" farm northeast of Glasco where they still reside. Frank farmed, raised sheep and later cattle. In later years, he and his son Gale farmed together. Frank enjoyed working as a carpenter, having worked on many of the homes in the Glasco community, along with helping Leland Davidson build several new homes. In addition, he helped remodel the Methodist and Christian churches in Glasco. Upon semi-retiring from farming, he and Neomi enjoyed traveling throughout California, Colorado, and Texas as well as much of the remained of the west, living in a variety of camping trailers, recreational vehicles and fifth-wheel mobile homes.
Frank and Neomi had two children; Mary Jo born in 1936 who lived only a short time, and Gale Evan born in 1944.
Frank was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church of Ada and later transferred his membership to the Grace United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Ada Lions Club and the Salt Creek Watershed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, his mother Mary, step mothers Mable and Ada, one sister Beulah Logan, one brother Robert Eugene and daughter Mary Jo.
Survivors are his wife Neomi of the home, one son Gale Ethridge and wife Ima of Glasco, one brother Gordon Ethridge of Minneapolis, two grandchildren Cathy Ethridge of Phoenix, Arizona, Kris Ethridge of Manhattan and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the First United Methodist Church, Glasco, Kansas with Pastor Kelly Sipes officiating.
