John Ethridge born c 1866, son of Martin Van Buren Ethridge b. 1834 Bond Co., IL

Does anyone have information on the children of Martin Van Buren Ethridge, specifically a son named John Ethridge born c1866 in Kansas (possibly Bourbon or Allen Co.)?

Here is what I know -- or think that I know:

Martin was born 1834 in Bond Co., IL - probably the youngest son of Burrell Ethridge. In most census records where I have been able to locate him, he and his children are listed with initials only so I do not know for absolute certain that John was Martin's son.

John Ethridge was married to (????) and had a son named Ernest born in Jan 1892, probably in KS. Ernest's mother died when, or shortly after, Ernest was born. Ernest is found living with his grandfather, Martin V.B. Etherage in the 1900 census of Woods Co., OK Terr.

In 1910 I find John with his wife Rosa (Sproul) who he married c1895 living in Crawford Co., KS with their children Matilda (born in Texas), Elmer born in New Mexico), & Ira (born in Kansas). So far I haven't been able to find either Martin or his grandson (John's son?) Ernest in 1910. I believe that John's brother Joseph/Joe (a son of Martin) was married to Rosa Sproul's sister, Clara Sproul. In 1880 the Sprouls were living in Rockwall Co., TX

Any help in locating more information on John Ethridge would be greatly appreciated.

A lot nore is known about my mom's family tree than about my dad's family tree. My dad's family tree is more or less a family shrub at this point.

Here's the information I have thus far. . .

My dad, John Owen Ethridge (1920-1998) is a native of Pulaski, Tennessee. His dad, Marcus Eugene Ethridge (1886-1966) is a native of Lebanon, Tennessee. Marcus Ethridge married Manella King (1887-1938). They had six children, of which five lived to maturity. All of Marcus and Manella's children are now deceased.

After Manella King Ethridge died, Marcus Ethridge then married Ruby Pollack (1909-1975). They had one child. This is the only surviving offspring left of Marcus Eugene Ethridge.

I don't know much, if anything, about Ruby Pollock. I have four generations of ancestors for Manella King. Unfortunately, these four generations total only eight people. It is my understanding that she had at least two sisters.

All I know about Marcus Eugene Ethridge is that he was the son of John Ethridge and Minerva Harding. I don't know if he had any siblings.

Thus, I present my brick wall.

She was born March 19, 1887.
She married Philip Clayton Corbin on December 17, 1903
She died November 4, 1949

I have a list of their children, but I am looking for more information on her parents.

R. Eugene "Jim" Ethridge, 77, 726 Willow, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1993, at Lindsborg Community Hospital.
Mr. Ethridge was born Aug. 4, 1916, at Ada. He was a retired contractor and farmer. He farmed in the Ada and Culver areas and worked for Altman Construction. He was a carpenter and owned and operated Gene's Construction. He was a charter member of the Ada Lions Club and a charter member of the Salina Sunrise Lions Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Salina, the Peacemakers Sunday School class, the Loyal Order of the Moose, Salina, and he was a past legion of the Moose member.
A son, Robert Leslie, died in 1938; and a daughter, Donna Jean, died in 1956.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Little Elder Ethridge of the home; a son, Larry of Manhattan; three stepsons, Grady Elder of LaCygne, Bryan Elder of Yukon, Okla., and Lyle Elder of Culver; a daughter, Mary Lynn Montgomery of Salina; three step-daughters, Faye Clements of Wichita, Carol Doran of Harlan, Iowa, and Lynne Anderson of Smolan; two brothers, Frank of Glasco and Gordon of Minneapolis; a sister, Beulah Logan of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; four grandchildren; and 16 stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Salina, the Revs. Paul Mugler, Susan Wickiser and John Daly officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Ada. Memorials may be made to the Gene Ethridge Scholarship Fund.

He was born Jan. 15, 1888 in Pratt and has lived in Salina 15 years.
Mr. Ethridge was a retired farrier and businessman.
He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, Ada, and the Modern Woodmen of America.
Surviving are the widow, Ada, of the home; 3 sons, Frank, Glasco; Gordon, Brawley, Calif., and Eugene, Topeka; a daughter, Mrs. Beulah Littrell, Marlow, Oklahoma; 2 step-sons, Earl Bailey, Lornita, Calif., and Robert Surbaugh, New Albany, Ind.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ray L. Frank M. Ethridge Died April 4, 2000
Frank Madison Ethridge was born to Robert E. and Mary Davis Bailey Ethridge on June 12, 1911, on a farm near Ada, Kansas. He departed life on Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at the Ottawa County Hospital in Minneapolis, Kansas at the age of 88 years.
Frank grew up on a farm west of Ada. His mother died as a result of the swine flu epidemic when he was seven years old. He attended grade school and high school in Ada, graduating from Ada High School in the Class of 1929. He enjoyed playing football and is still remembered as a hard hitting fullback.
After high school, Frank traveled to California and worked for his half-brother Earl Bailey, and then after having all his possessions stolen in San Diego on his was home, he hitchhiked home, learning what it meant to be penniless and forced to "ride the rails." Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's reconstruction program during the depression. He worked in Kansas and Minnesota and helped build dams, parks, and plant trees.
Frank married Neomi Claudine Beichley, the daughter of Henry and Grace Beichley on March 11, 1935. Early in their marriage, the couple lived in a number of Kansas communities, and two years in Oregon during the depth of the depression and drought years. He worked as an oil well driller, mechanic, farmhand, ranch hand, and in heavy equipment construction in Wichita, and highway maintenance in the mountains of Oregon.
In 1941 Frank and Neomi moved onto the farm in the Brewer neighborhood southwest of Minneapolis and began farming. In 1945 they moved to the farm west of Ada on which he had grown up. Several years later, they bought their own farm located north of Ada and moved onto it after Frank spent the winter remodeling the house. They lived there until 1957 when they sold their farm and moved to Bonneville, Arkansas. While in Arkansas, Frank worked for a gas and oil drilling company, wildcatting for deep gas deposits.
On May 28, 1958, Frank and his family moved back to Kansas. He and Neomi bought the "Sheffield" farm northeast of Glasco where they still reside. Frank farmed, raised sheep and later cattle. In later years, he and his son Gale farmed together. Frank enjoyed working as a carpenter, having worked on many of the homes in the Glasco community, along with helping Leland Davidson build several new homes. In addition, he helped remodel the Methodist and Christian churches in Glasco. Upon semi-retiring from farming, he and Neomi enjoyed traveling throughout California, Colorado, and Texas as well as much of the remained of the west, living in a variety of camping trailers, recreational vehicles and fifth-wheel mobile homes.
Frank and Neomi had two children; Mary Jo born in 1936 who lived only a short time, and Gale Evan born in 1944.
Frank was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church of Ada and later transferred his membership to the Grace United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Ada Lions Club and the Salt Creek Watershed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, his mother Mary, step mothers Mable and Ada, one sister Beulah Logan, one brother Robert Eugene and daughter Mary Jo.
Survivors are his wife Neomi of the home, one son Gale Ethridge and wife Ima of Glasco, one brother Gordon Ethridge of Minneapolis, two grandchildren Cathy Ethridge of Phoenix, Arizona, Kris Ethridge of Manhattan and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the First United Methodist Church, Glasco, Kansas with Pastor Kelly Sipes officiating. Music was by Judy Wyatt, Gail Cyr, Nancy Sipes and Phyllis Struble.
Casket bearers were Eldon Henderson, Milton Henderson, Marvin Henning, Delmar Loe, Ken Robinson and Francis Tatro.
Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery, Ada, Kansas.
McDonald-Roberts Funeral Service were in charge of arrangements.

Samuel N. Ethridge, Alabama, father from Georgia

I am looking for the parents of Samuel N. Ethridge. He was born about 1853 in Alabama. He married Rebecca J. in Alabama about 1880. They later moved to East Texas. The census records list his father's place of birth as Georgia and his mother's as Alabama. There is a Samuel N. on 1880 census with a 56 year old Anderson D. Ethridge and a 33 year old Elizabeth. I can't find any information before that on Anderson D. Elizabeth is listed on the 1880 census in Clark County, Al as a farmer and head of household. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The bride is very well known in this part of the country and needs no introduction to the people of Ada and vicinity, she having lived here all her life.

I have just begun searching this side of my family. My maiden name is Ethridge. My mother, deceased, told me that my father, Bob Ray Ehtridge, changed his name from Etheridge to Ethridge legally. My Gpa was Raymond Etheridge and Gma was Anna Rutherford. My GGpa and GGma was Frank and Louella Whitecotton. My GGGpa and GGGma was Peter and Malela(?). I have some of the names and dates but I can't go any farther back and I am stuck. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Her and Kenneth had 2 children Junior and Brenda, that now live in AR. Christine had 7 siblings all but one still live in ARK. Christine and Robert have 5 kids.

Samuel Ethridge (Etheridge) was my great-great-great grandfather. Census reports, as well as family members, state that he came from North Carolina, and so did his parents. I would dearly love to "find" him. I find info from an 1850 census report from Decatur, Georgia and an 1850 marriage certificate from the same county stating his marriage to Sarah Goodwin on29 Apr 1850. In the 1850 census report he is 34 and Sarah is 32. There are kids listed, but they are to old to be Samuel and Sarah's as they married on 29 Apr 1850. The kids are James 12, Arlenas 11, Ann 7, Martha 5, Nancy 3, Susan 13, and John 1. Sarah and the children are all shown as being born in Georgia. Samuel & Sarah do have children as stated in the 1860 census: Enoch 9, Frances 5, & Isaac 6 months. On this census he lives in Jackson Co., Florida. I've found a marriage certificate date on 21 Apr 1863 where he marries Sarah Ann Scott. In the 1870 census he is living in Calhoun Co, FL with his children Enoch, Isaac & Frances. In the 1880 census he lives with his daughter, Martha, and her husband, William H. Beck, in Abe Springs, Calhoun Co., FL. He is lsited as a widower. I am looking for Samuel, where he came from and what happened to him, as well as any of the other family members. I know about his son, Isaac Samuel, and the lineage there. Willie Lee "Hambone" Ethridge, 73, of Tallahassee died Nov. 22, 2000. The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church in Tallahassee, with burial at Southside Cemetery. A native of Alabama, he had lived in Tallahassee for about 60 years. He was a self-employed commercial painter. He is survived by a son, Michael Ethridge of Tallahassee; a daughter, Nadavia Vaughn of Tallahassee; two devoted friends, Terri Houston and Gaile Mitchell of Tallahassee; and four grandchildren. I am looking for any traces of the Etheridge family that married into the Brown family in Hancock or Harrison County.
Annie Pearl Etheridge married George Brown, the parents of Homer Brown. Annie Pearl Etheridge had a sister who died in child birth. So the story goes they did not bury this woman for several hours because they did not know if the baby was deceaesd or not. This woman and her child are buried in an unmarked grave in Wolf Creek Cemetery. I am looking for someone to help me give her a name so I can erect a headstone in our family cemetery.

The email address is no longer valid for the contributor of that info. I am assuming Selena was the first wife and Allen remarried after she died. (I do not have a death date or any other information on Selena). I would greatly appreciate any clarification on this. I also have a J.W. Ethridge and an E.T. Their father was Leon from Decatur, Ms. was a farmer and married to Onamae Mann. Leons father was either Meshack or Meshacklin, who had a gunfight with another man and they were both killed. Nathan Elbert Ellsworth ETHRIDGE, 72, of Sapulpa, died in his home Aug. 26, 2004. He was born Dec. 14, 1931 in Tulsa and lived in Sapulpa.
He worked for Bartlett Collins Glass Company until he retired in 1996. He was a Sergeant ES for 14 years, 7 months, and 9 days. He married Anna Juliana SCHNEIDER on Jan. 26, 1957 in Mainz, West Germany. Nathan's life enjoyment was working on clocks and watches. He also loved thrift Stores and yard sales.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Ellsworth ETHRIDGE; mother Gwyndola Corena DISNEY HOLT; brother Gilbert ETHRIDGE; sisters Cora Ann JONES, Sybil Rozetta CUNNINGHAM and Eugena Ann ETHRIDGE; daughter Trivia O. ETHRIDGE and three grandsons, Allen Wayne DeGRAFFENREID, Anthony Wayne and Timothy Allen HEADLEY.
Survivors are his wife Jula; children, Marina DeGRAFFENREID, Leona J. My great grandfather was George Thornton Ethridge, 26 June 1860-8 December 1929. I don't know where he was born, but he married Frances (Fannie) Derina Cross (5 Sept. 1865-17 June 1944) and their daughter, Maudie Mae, (11 Jan.1889-8 Mar 1942) was born in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Family members say that Fannie was from Lauderdale County, but I have been unable to verify this. Maudie married Albert Wesley Overstreet (30 April 1875-27 sept. 1940) of Wayne County,MS. The family eventually ended up in Lamar County. All of the ones I have named here are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hattiesburg, Lamar, MS. I haven't been able to find anything on any of my 2nd greats or before. Can anyone provide some missing links for me?

born about 1800 Forks Of The Yadkin in North Carolina. His wife was Elizabeth Camp or (Kemp) born about 1800 also.

His second wife was my grandmother, Nola Mae Hutchens. They divorced and she later married my grandfather, James Harold Burnette. They are all from the Henry County Tennessee area.

My father was Vance Deville Ethridge of Union Parish, LA, son of John Albert Ethridge b Dec 1892. My grandfather was the son of Martha Melissa Halley, but I do not know his father's name. Frederick, Okla. -- Chama Kathleen "Ethridge" Kollman, 84, of Tipton, Okla., died Saturday (9 Sep 1995) in her home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Altus City Cemetery with the Rev. Roberta Ganzer of First United Methodist Church in Tipton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Frederick Funeral Home.
Miss Kollman was born June 13, 1911, in Tipton. She worked as a hairstylist in Wichita Falls (TX) for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tipton.
Survivors include three sisters, Lois Brady of Rockville, Md., Johnnie Brockman of Levelland, Texas, and Lota Stoll of Frederick, OK. She was preceded by: her parents, 4 brothers: Bailey, Rochelle, Rutledge and Cecil, 2 sisters: Daisie Ethridge and Grace Marshall. Also several nieces and nephews.

Grace (Ethridge) Marshall, 88, who formerly lived at 526 Bartlett St., died Sunday morning in Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Walnut Ridge (AR). She had lived in Walnut Ridge since 1983.
She was born April 13, 1896, in Paluxy, Texas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was married to Ernest Marshall on July 11, 1958, in Memphis (TN), and he died on Nov. 30, 1980.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Alice Ciosek of Mishawaka, Ind., and Anna Johnson of Lapeer, Mich.; five sisters, Lois Brady of Imboden, Ark., Daisie Ethridge of Walnut Ridge, Lota Stoll of Frederick, Okla., Chama Kollman of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Johnnie Brockman of Levelland, Texas; and six stepgrandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Fitch Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Bluff (MO) City Cemetery. Visitation was set to begin at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
