1. Gen. Clement Anselm EVANS was born 25 Feb 1833 in Stewart County, GA. He died 2 Jul 1911 in Atlanta, GA and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, GA.

General EVANS was a man of high military distinction who served in the Confederate army, rising to the rank of major general. Throughout his life he was a prominent man in the South in military, ecclesiastical and civic affairs. At the time of his death he was a member of the prison commission of Georgia.

July 3, 1911: GEN. C.A. EVANS DIED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT 4:30. Atlanta, GA. July 2, After lingering at death's door for nearly a month, Gen. Clement A. Evans, formerly commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans, died at his home in this city this afternoon at 4:30 pm of Bright's disease. His death was not unexpected and several of his children were at his beside when the end came. A General EVANS, who was 79 years old, has been confined to his home since the first of last April, but he has been in ill health for several years. He was born in Stewart County, Georgia in 1833, and came to Atlanta to make his permanent home in 1889 when he was appointed presiding elder of the Griffin district, in the North Georgia conference of the Southern Methodist Church.

General EVANS is survived by six children: Mrs. W.F. Eve and L.B. Evans of Augusta, GA; P.H. and Clement W. Evans of Mexico City; and Mrs. R.G. Stephens and Miss Sarah Lee EVANS of Atlanta. Mrs. Eve was his eldest child, and Mr. Lawton B. Evans his oldest son (both were with him at the time of his death).

Synopsis: He was elected commander-in-chief UCV in April 1903. He lived in Augusta for a number of years and was at one time pastor of St. James Methodist Church when it was remodeled; and St. John's Methodist. Common school educated in Stewart Co. Graduated Augusta Law School. After graduation was judge of the county court and later elected to the State Senate in 18__, where history records him as advocating succession. Enlisted in a Stewart Co company; attached the 31st Georgia regiment. (portions of this long obituary not transcribed)

Clement married (1) Mary Allen Walton "Allie" on 8 Feb 1854 in Stewart County, GA. Allie was born 1838. She died 17 Jan 1884 in Augusta-Richmond County, GA and was buried in Magnolia Cemetery- Augusta, GA.

In this volume are printed for the first time his diaries from the battlefield and the touching letters to his wife, Mary Allen (Allie) Walton EVANS.

October 18, 1884: "IN PEACEFUL SLEEP. Yesterday morning Ms. Clement A EVANS died at the residence on Greene Street, surrounded by her family, and with the full hope of a bright and blessed beyond. Her death was no surprise to her ______ has been ready to ______(large portion faded too much to read). Mrs. Evans was known and loved by our people. It needed not the pathos of suffering or the calm resignation of the invalid's latter days to endear her to many here. She was loved in Augusta as she was loved everywhere in Georgia, and in many places in the South, because she was an estimable, heroic Christian lady, gentle among the responsibilities of the household and courageous in all her relations in the world. As the wife of a brave and gallant Confederate officer, she accompanied the soldier in many of his movements, sharing the hardships of the life, and as consort to the active and popular Methodist minister, she accompanied him in his charges and was everywhere the devoted, inspiring and noble woman. Mrs. Evans was a Miss Walton of Stewart County, GA, having been married about thirty years ago, at the age of fifteen, to General Clement A. Evans. She lived to be the mother of eight children, five of whom survived, among them Mrs. Wm. F. Eve, and Mr. Lawton B. Evans, residents and well known in this community. Last year General EVANS was induced by the ill health of his wife to withdraw from the North Georgia Conference and move to Augusta. The deepest sympathies of the entire people go out to General EVANS and to the other members of the family of this affliction."

October 18, 1884: The friends of Rev. and Mrs. Clement A. Evans and family, of Mr. Lawton B. Evans, and of Judge and Mrs. Wm. F. Eve, are invited to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Clement A. Evans at 11 o'clock tomorrow, Saturday, morning, from the residence of the former on lower Greene Street (Augusta).

In 1876 Judge Eve was married to Ida EVANS, a daughter of Gen. Clement A. and Allie (Walton) EVANS. General EVANS was a man of high military distinction, who served in the Confederate army, rising to the rank of major general. To Judge and Mrs. Eve seven children were born. Three boys died in early childhood, and a daughter Ida died at the age of thirteen years. The surviving children are: Allie Walton, who is the wife of H. E. Cabaniss, their children being William F. Eve Cabaniss; Henry Harrison Cabaniss; Sarah Garland, and William Frederick, Jr., who is manager of the Augusta Cement Gravel Company. He married Miss Grace Boykin, and their children are Grace Boykin and William F. Eve, III.

Ida married Hon. William Frederick Eve - Judge - Richmond County, GA, son of Dr. Joseph Adams Eve and Sarah Garland COMBS. William was born 1851.

1940 Augusta Chronicle Article: Judge WILLIAM Eve. Father of Good Roads in Georgia. By Prentice Palmer. The year was 1912, and the month was January. In the late hours of Wednesday, the 12th, fire started licking around the base of an Augusta home. The next morning the home of Judge William F. Eve was in ashes. The loss was estimated at about $20,000. Judge Eve was stunned. Not only had he lost one of the first homes built on Monte Sano, but also a priceless library, nearly 5,000 volumes of historical maternal which belong to his father and father-in-law, Gen. C.A. Evans of War Between the States fame. When Richmond County citizens read about the disaster, they decided to do something. The result was a $10,000 fund to rebuild the home!

BORN IN AUGUSTA: Born March 8, 1851, in Augusta, he attended private schools here and graduated from law school at the University of Virginia in 1870. He turned to a private law practice in Augusta after graduation but soon entered public life, a calling that carried him through life and made him one of the best known, best loved citizens in Richmond County and in Georgia. The governor of Georgia in 1876, James M. Smith, recognized in the young Augusta lawyer a quality which made the governor appoint him solicitor of the Court of Richmond County.

4 M iii. Dr. Lawton Bryan EVANS was born 27 Oct 1862 in Lumpkin, GA. He died 6 Apr 1934 in Augusta-Richmond County, GA.

August 26, 1934: U.S. EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM MOURNS EVANS' PASSING. The year 1933-34 brought to the schools of Augusta and Richmond County one tragedy that was shared by the South and the remainder of the nation alike, the death, on April 6, of Dr. Lawton B. Evans, who for 51 years had served continuously as superintendent of schools. Death claimed him after he had suffered for two days with pneumonia. With his passing Augusta and the nation lost one of the most valuable citizens….Dr. Evans literally gave his life to the schools of Richmond County. He entered the system as a teacher 53 years ago at the age of 18 immediately after his graduation form the Univ. of Georgia in 1881 with a master's degree and membership with Phi Beta kappa. Previous to his attendance at Georgia he had gradated from Old Emory College at oxford, GA 1878-1880 where he obtained his A.B. degree at the age of 17 years.

[Portions not quoted in this very long obituary regarding his career and books] Dr. Evans was born October 7, 1862, the son of Clement Anslem and Mary Allen Walton EVANS, in Lumpkin, Stewart County, Georgia. He was married February 15, 1887 to Miss Florence Eve Campbell, a granddaughter of the late Dr. Joseph Eve and a sister of Joseph Eve Campbell, prominent Augusta cotton man. Mrs. Evans died July 3, 1932.

Lawton married Florence Eve Campbell, daughter of Brother Pulaski F Campbell and Sarah Woolsey Eve, on 15 Feb 1887. Florence died 3 Jul 1932.

From Dr. Evans obituary: "February 15, 1887, he married Miss Florence Eve Campbell, a granddaughter of the late Dr. Joseph Eve and sister of Joseph Eve Campbell, prominent Augusta cotton man. Mrs. Evans died July 3, 1932. From this union there were three children: Lawton B. Evans, Jr.; Clement A. Evans, II; and Sara EVANS, now Mrs. Edward H. Kent. Lawton B. Evans, Jr. was killed while a pilot in the aviation corps of the army during the World War, Clement A. Evans, II now lives in Atlanta, where he is in the stock and bond business; Mrs. Kent lives in Wilkes-Barre, PA." (more information not transcribed here)

February 23, 1902: PAUL EVANS OF MEXICO is Back in Augusta for Rest and Recreation. The presence in his old home of Mr. Paul H. Evans, brother of Mr. Lawton B. Evans, our popular superintendent of public schools, is a source of pleasure to many old friends. For 12 years Mr. Paul EVANS has been a resident of the City of Mexico, and he finds many changes in Augusta since he left here in 1889. Before he left here he was in the employ of the Thompson-Houston Electric Light Company, at its plant on the canal, and in 1889 went to Atlanta for the same company. From there he was sent to Yucatan and remained a year, and from there was transferred to the City of Mexico where he is now chief engineer of the Mexican General Electric Co., this being the agency in Mexico for the General Electric Co of new York, which was formed by the combination of the Thompson-Houston and the Edison interests. Mr. Evans is off on a three month's leave of absence; spent time with his father Gen. Clement A. Evans in Atlanta; and is now with is sister Mrs. W. F. Eve at Monte Sano. He says that Broad Street has been completely metamorphosed since he left here (etc).
