JOHN EVE, transported to USA (Virginia?) from UK

John Eve was born in Chesterton, Cambridge, in England. He was transported to the USA for 7 years in 1756 for stealing lead from a house. He doesn't appear to have returned to the UK so I would like to know what happened to him.

If anyone knows, I would be very grateful to hear from them as I am a direct descendant. I think he may have been sent to Virginia, although I am by no means certain of this. He left a wife and children behind in the Uk and there are many descendants here in England to this day.

Adam Eve

have come across an obituary for Adam Eve of Merion Township, Montgomery County, PA; who died in 1821 at age 104. It was published under the heading DIED in the November 29, 1821 issue of the newspaper "People's Friend" which was published in Little Falls, Herkimer County, NY starting in September of 1821.

DIED

"Lately- At his farm in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Mr. Adam Eve, aged about 104. He emigrated from Germany into this conutry at the commencement of the Indian and French war, near 70 years ago. Upon his arrival in America, he was sold for a term of years to pay his passage; which term he served with fidelity. By his industry he acquired a handsome property, and raised a large family of children. He had no recollection of ever having the smallpox, nor even the usual sickness while crossing the sea. he never lost an hour from labour by indisposition, nor employed a physician, nor took any kind of medicine, in his life. he was completely worn out by old age."

I am not a family member and have no further information about this individual or why his obituary was printed in a Little Falls, NY newspaper.

Hello David

Hope this finds you well.

Susan and I are really looking for the parents of William EVE who was born in Ingatestone. I know that you have your EVE website covering 1837 onwards, but do you have anything on William (father John EVE a farmer)who would both be pre 1837 registration.

You will remember Roger Suckling who is an EVE researcher and the problem we had with Simon EVE of Little Dunmow. We must let you have the updates to this line. We found one or two skeletons in the cupboard. We have not yet found either of his marriages, both of which produced children!

Regards
Sheila Jones
sheila.jones@ukonline.co.uk

Dear ?

In order to check on your William EVE who married Eliza CLARK in Shoreditch, County of Middlesex in June quarter 1840, I tried to find them in the 1841 Census for Shoreditch. They were not in that Census to substantiate either age or occupation or if they were born in the County of Essex, rather than Middlesex.

Could you tell me in which census you found them, parish, his occupation and the census that give his birthplace as Ingatestone, Essex. I have checked some christenings for Ingatestone parish church and William does not appear.

As I am sure you can appreciate both William and John are common christian names and appear hundreds of times in the EVE records.

Regards
sheila.jones@ukonline.co.uk

There is a John Eve 1825 born in Stourbridge, Worcs who appears on the Evetree - I'm not sure which family. An email to David Eve at the Evetree might be worth a try.
Am seeking any information on Mary EVE, wife of Ebenezer HEMENWAY of Framingham, Massachusetts. Mary was born ca. 1712. According to Temple's History of Framingham, she was captured by Indians and redeemed in girlhood. Many WFT's indicate she was the daughter of Adam EVE & Elizabeth (BARSHAM) EVE but I can find no proof of her parentage. If somone has information that can help to substantiate who her parents were, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Carrie,
It's a bit of a long shot but I am hoping we have a link. I'm searching my husband's line. His great grandfather was Charles EVE born in Boughton under Blean about 1842. He married Sophia CARTER (b. about 1850) on 16 Oct 1869 in Graveney, Kent and settled there.

Charles said on the marriage certificate that his father was William Eve.

I have a bit of a problem here because I sent for Charles' birth certificate, and it was the wrong child! I can't seem to find the right one anywhere. Perhaps he wasn't registered.

Ditto for baptisms in Boughton under Blean, although he records himself as being born there on all other records.

His siblings were: Frederick (died in infancy), Alice Mary (KENNETT), William, Harry, Emily (MOORE), Frank (died in infancy), Jane also known as Jennie (BENNETT, although she was widowed 1 month after marriage!), Agnes Sophia (SWENEY), Bertha (BISHOP), Sophia Harriet (died in infancy) and Thomas.

Any joy?

Penny Holt
in Canada

It will take some more research by both of us to see if we have a connection, but we should keep in touch.

Here's my brick wall. My Charles EVE claims to be the son of William EVE (marriage cert.), born about 1842 -- a date repeated on all subsequent censuses, as well as a birthplace of Boughton under Blean. The problem is that the only birth that I can find for a Charles EVE in about that time and place, is a child whose father is Henry EVE.

Recently I borrowed the Bishop's Transcripts from Boughton under Blean from the Family History Library, and took down details for all my surnames. I didn't find my Charles, but I may have found something useful to you. Here it is, from the BT's of Baptismal Records from the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Boughton Under Blean, Kent.
James EVE, Ch. 4 July 1841, son of Henry Charles EVE, Labourer, and Mary Ann EVE (No.1358 p.170)

Here are a bunch of others from the same source. We might have more than one generation here. I'll let you work it out. The following have the parents Henry (Labourer) and Mary or Mary Ann EVE.
Samuel EVE ch. 20 Feb. 1820
Eliza EVE ch. 28 Apr 1822
Elvia EVE ch 1 Feb. 1824
Olive EVE ch 1 Jan 1826
Sophia EVE ch. 15 June 1828
Henry James EVE ch 23 Aug 1829
Charles James EVE ch 29 Apr 1832
Mary Elizabeth EVE ch 22 Mar 1835
Ann EVE ch 13 Mar 1836
Charles EVE ch 12 July 1840
Henry EVE ch. 1 Oct 1837
Mary EVE ch 1 Dec 1837
William EVE ch 29 Apr 1838
Henry Charles EVE 27 Aug 1780

These folks had parents of Henry Charles EVE and Mary or Mary Ann EVE.
Susanna EVE ch 14 Jun 1835
Charles EVE ch 4 Aug 1839
Elizabeth Jane EVE ch 7 May 1843
Richard EVE ch 20 Nov 1836

I took down all the EVE's for marriages and burials, too so if you need them, or citations for any of the above, please write back.

And please keep a look out for my Charles, son of William EVE,

Thanks,

Penny Holt
in British Columbia, Canada

Hi Carrie:
Here is what the birth certificate says;
Born, 6 June 1840, Charles, son of Henry EVE, a labourer, and Mary EVE formerly SHILLING. Henry EVE informed of the birth of his son and signed with his mark on 12 July 1840. Reg Dist: Faversham, Sub-Dist: Boughton.

I'd be happy to send you a scan of this if it pertains to you.

As to the 1851 census, I have a subscription to Ancestry, but the only problem with that is that it's a little bit cumbersome to search by address on the occasions when that is necessary.

I've found a family of EVEs in Goodnestone on HO107/1626 Folio432 Page 4, but I can't be absolutely sure this is the family that I am looking for, although they have a son named Charles at the right age, because the mother Mary A. EVE is a widow. Was she married to William or Henry?

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks

Penny in Canada

Yeah, Sheila, I found this family on the 1851 census, also -- only there was no Ann, and there were the following people:
Susannah EVE b. Goodnestone 1836
Joanna EVE b. Goodnestone 1847
Frederick EVE b. Boughton 1848

This family may include the Charles that I am looking for, but when I sent for the birth certificate of Charles EVE, born 6 June 1840, it said his mother was Mary EVE formerly SHILLING and the father Henry EVE of Boughton. Hmm!

Can't really think how to confirm this now. I have a subscription to Ancestry so maybe I just have to be patient until the get the 1841 online. Should be soon.

Penny in Canada.

Wow!!

Penny, this is brilliant, thank you so much, it's going to be really interesting sorting this lot out.

Do you think there is a chance that Charles wasn't absolutely sure who his father was? if dad died when Charles was a young boy, he might not have known him very well?

And if these Eves are anything like the rest of my family tree, they were suspicious of authority and not too interested in complying with registration regulations - I imagine a number of events would have just not been recorded.

I think I might get a copy of the marriage certificates for Eliza and Olive - at least those might confirm the name of the father, possibly give other useful info.
Also, if you are interested, I have a copy of the death certificate and other details for the Henry Eve that i believe to be Samuel's father.

I would like to send you some paper copies of information I have. I am moving house at the end of this month or beginning of June - will also be changing email address. My private email is carolyn.bean@ntlworld.com. Would you send me your email or postal address? if you don't hear from me, I can also be contacted at work: carrie.bean@derby.gov.uk, but i'm unlikely to disappear completely!!
Hi Paul, I would be interested to see if you have a Thomas Eve b abt 1800(?) within the information you have. I am trying to trace the birth details of the father of John b1825 in Great Waltham, so far without success, so with the two areas being close by I am hoping for a lucky enquiry! Thanks

Dear Cyndi

Further to your posting. I have details of the marriage of Frank Banet and Della Eve in 1893 together with census details from 1900.

It appears that both Della and Frank's fathers were born in France.

You can contact me at the following e-mail address - evedk@yahoo.co.uk

David Eve
