Matthew James Everingham - birth and parents

Has anyone done on the ground (in London)research on an entry in the baptism records of the Parish of St George Bloomsbury for July 1768 p.159 which shows the baptism of a Matthew James to Joseph and Mary Everingham on August 22 of that year with a birth date of July 25 (this is not a spoof though the names Joseph and Mary may create a vision of a second coming)? I found the register yesterday on Ancestry and anyone can access it to verify its authenticity. It is a photographic image of the register not a reference.
The genealogical timeline fits +/- one year from records in his convict papers and if this IS our Matthew James it calls into question much of the myth of his connection to the peerage. However, Bloomsbury was an upper class suburb and his parents may well have been of substance! Seems far more likely that a local lad would take employment as a servant to a gentleman in the Middle Temple than the offspring of a peer.
I think it is VERY important we all know about our history, I am a proud Darug Aboriginal woman, I have done a lot of research on my family, back to my 5th Great Grandfather.
Some of the Everinghams are married into our family, I love learning of our Ancestors, as most of my family go back to the Aboriginal's of Sydney area, a lot of our history the Gov at the time tried to take away our heritage, so this makes it even more important to me.

I have a William Everingham born in May 1851 in New Jersey and died March 31, 1923 in Bridgeton, NJ. He is buried in the Broad St. Presbyterian church cemetery in Bridgeton. Unfortunetly there is no grave marker there. He is buried with his daughter Sadie who died in 1918. My great (James Clarence) grandfather was one of his sons. I have a public family tree, Petrauschke Family tree, that has more information if this is the right William Everingham. We have not been able to find much information before 1895.

I have a total of 43 Evernhams and 13 Everinghams in my Ocean County Cemetery Database. As for your request, there are no Williams that fall within the dates you posted, although that doesn't necessarily mean he isn't buried in Ocean County. I have done extensive research on Ocean County interments using gravemarkers, records, and newspaper articles, but there is always a chance that the William you are looking for never made any of those sources. The only Williams that do show up are William Everingham (1836-6/23/1836) in Whitesville, and a William C. Evernham (1881-1962) in Cassville.

The Story of Maria Locke

Maria Locke was a full blood Aboriginal; a descendant of the Boorooberongal clan who lived in what is now the Western suburbs of Sydney. Her father was Yarramundi, to whom the British gave the title 'Chief of the Richmond tribe.' Yarramundi met Captain Watkins Tench and provided medical assistance to one of Tench's party who had been injured.
Yarramundi and his father Gomeberri were Koradji (healers).

Yarramundi and Gomeberri met Governor Phillip in April 1791. They presented Governor Phillip with a gift of two stone axes.

Maria Locke was the first girl to be placed in the care of the Native Institution at Parramatta when it opened in 1815. Maria was said to be an excellent student. Here she solicited the chief prize when tested against approximately 20 Aboriginal and 100 European students.

Maria became the first Aboriginal woman to legally wed a European man when she married Robert Locke on 26 January 1824 at St John's Church, Parramatta. Robert Locke was a convict carpenter who was assigned to his new wife after their marriage. Maria could return her husband to the Government if she desired. With the commencement of this marriage, Maria was given a cow and a grant of land at Liverpool totalling 40 acres. The site of Maria's land grant is now the location of the Liverpool City Council Chambers.

Maria was the sister of Colebee, who along with Narragingy, received the first grant of land made by the British to an Aboriginal person. Colebee was a guide assisting William Cox when he surveyed the road across the Blue Mountains.

Maria was an extraordinary woman, at a time when women were not a political force and Aboriginal women even less so, she petitioned Governor Darling stating that she had received only a part of the promised entitlements that should have resulted from her marriage. Considering the standing of Aboriginals in the colony I think this is action alone is worthy of recognition.

Maria, Robert and their family of 9 children lived on the land grant at Liverpool for 11 years before moving to Blacktown in 1844, when they inherited Colebee and Nurragingy's land. Maria continued living there until her death in 1878, aged 70.Maria and Robert are buried in unmarked graves in the grounds of St Bartholomew's Church, Prospect.

Although Governor Macquarie, had bequeathed the land given to Colebee to Maria's family "to have and to hold forever" the land was split up gradually and sold by the authorities sometime late in the 1940s. Many of the Darug children were sent to homes in the days of the Protection Board.

In the eyes of many the Darug tribe no longer exists. In less than 100 years the Hawkesbury and Cumberland Plain was emptied of all the Aboriginal people who had cared for the land for 30,000years. Martha Everingham nee Hobs was the last full blood Aborigine of the Hawkesbury: she died in 1926.

There are 7000 descendants of Maria and Robert Lock. Like me and my immediate family many of these descendants may not be aware of their Aboriginal ancestry. Hopefully by telling the story of Maria people will learn more of our shared history and some may discover their own Aboriginality.

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Saturday, December 9, 1911

SLEPT ON THE OLD DEPOT FLOOR.

The wreck on the Chicago & Alton Railroad yesterday
afternoon which caused local train service between
Kansas City and Marshall, Mo., to be annulled until this
morning, made it necessary for Mrs. Earl M. CHRISTIAN
of Higginsville, and three small children, to spend a rather
uncomfortable night at the Union Depot.

Mrs. Ollie EVERINGHAM, the matron, obtained a pair of
heavy bed comforts which were doubled up and served
as a bed on the floor for the three children.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo8

Currently reading Valerie Ross's books to try to untangle the facts & myths. The books have awakened a desire to begin tracing my family tree so I will be anxious to discover where my family spread after they left the Windsor area & who I am related to.

hi am very interested. i too have been trying to track the aboriginal heritage thru the everingham and woodbury,s. i am a direct descandant of maria hibbs. whose mum elizabeth woodbury was the daughter of william son of richard. i kno that richard and william were rescued during their earliest stints on the hawkesbury and that both the vraft and everingham families too intermingled but cant really find the direct link. unfortuneatley the nsw govt just noted them as disabled on their birth certificates. or didnt count them at all.

Can you tell me where this bible came from? I'm related to all of these people - and those who stayed in Bayville are buried in the cemetery here. I'm a direct descendant of Benjamin Pierce and Lydia Ann Everingham - I'm a Pierce.

Also, it says that Isaac Everenham married Emeline Coward - is she the same woman who later married Jesse Platt, and if so, I was given information from the everingham website that said her name was Emeline Hall.

If you know of anyone, I'd love to find someone living in Bayville or the Toms River area who is working on the Everenham/Potter/Bunnell/Platt line. I actually have Jesse Platt related to me on my mother's side, and Emeline Everenham related to me on my father's side!

There are 9 Nevills children and you only list two (Zebulon and Emily. My Gt Gt-Grandfather Samuel Forbes Anderson married two of the sisters (Emily and when she died Emiline her younger sister). I can complete this line as far as 1930's for each person if you wish. Sources are from an Anderson Family History written when most were still alive and family Bibles. I can bring all lines up to date.

EVERI NGHAM

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to construct a family tree for EVERINGHAM

I have two different family groups for EVERINGHAM at the present and am looking for ancestors/descendants/connecting families for them.

The earliest ancestor in the first group is Matthew James Everingham, who married Ann Chaseling. They had a son Andrew 1839-1923.

In the second group it is Lin Everingham, who married Gordon Griffith Bale. Gordons's parents were George Bale 1849-1934 and a Catherine Childs.
It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the EVERINGHAM name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone. .

Re: trying to trace family back to Matthew James Everingham

hello Susan Kimber,
If you can get your hands on a copy of "Cornstalks" by Valerie Ross, it may be of help to tracing your relationship back to Matthew James Everingham. I am a descendant via his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth's marriage to Richard Woodbury, & hence their daughter Elizabeth's marriage to William Hibbs, then, via their son, George to Eliza Thomas (mistakenly listed as Elizabeth or Anne Elizabeth Thomson) via their daughter Clara Jane Hibbs who married Hugh William Gorman & then via my mother, Lillian May who married William Allan. There are two versions of "Cornstalks" the latest one was published just a couple of years ago....I hope this will be of some help to you, the State Library of NSW will no doubt hold of copy of the book. Regards, Lindy Carrall JP
