Looking for EVERITTs for DNA genealogical study

Looking for EVERITTs who would like to compare their dna results with other EVERITTs.
WE ESPECIALLY WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM EVERITTs THE UK.
We have traced our line in the US back to the early 1600s in New Amsterdam (NYC). We would love to understand where they came from in England. It could be Essex.....
The most useful test for tracing a surname is the male specific Y-47. Contact the Ancestry DNA support staff at 1-800-958-9124. Or go to the Ancestry website and click on the DNA button. To participate you do not need to join Ancestry. You may also contact me at sandyeveritt@yahoo.com

Although there is a DNA Surname page for Everett and related names. I have found that our EVERITTS are all in one cluster and many still spell the name EVERITT rather than EVERETT the more popular US variant. So I am setting up a DNA Surname page on Ancestry for those who spell their name as EVERITT (or whose ancestors spelled their name that way).

Nice to meet you!

I am on genesreunited.I'll try to make contact there- not sure how to go about it yet!

I have George EVERITT's birth cert. Can send you a copy if you like? I also rely a lot on the censuses.I have a photo of George's daughter- Emma Elizabeth Gertrude EVERITT. She died at only 54- intestinal cancer. Very sad! Her daughter-my grandmother was only 23.

Emma's youngest son has a strange name- her husband said he would be named after the next horse to win a race that afternoon! His name is: Sir Tango Claud! No -one called him Sir, just Tango!

Thanks so much, can't wait to see your tree!
Regards,
Shona

Well you replied quicker than me, thanks

You have probably come across this familly living at 32 Colchester Street, White Chaple in the 1871 census. I live in the west midlands and only have a basic knowledge of london and the surounding areas. I think the 1881 census must hold the key to making sure 'or not as the case may be'that these are my ancestors, but it is as yet not giving me it's secrets.

Do you know london, if so? if you where born in wapping in the 1880's (i.e. Old Gravel Lane) what area would you be registered in/at? I know it comes under St george in the east as a parish

Thanks again

Kelvin

over 12 months on and i've just noticed a reply - really on the ball aint I!

After loads of trolling and many a late night, the closest match I have is that Everitt was her married name?

Now!!! Alice everitt (my g grandmother)on her 1st marriage certificate gave her father as ? Everitt, deceaced, Blacksmith.

In the 1871 census a Mary Ann from Paddington is married to a James Everett (looks like everitt)from bilericay, Essex and he is down as a blacksmith. He married a Mary Ann Fisher in 1865 chelmsford. I cannot find any reference of any of this family in the 1881,1891 and 1901 census's

In the 1901 census mary ann is named Morris and in the 1891 census is living with a John Morris although still named Everitt. the only marriage I can find is a John Morris and a Mary Ann Fisher in 1894 newport monmouthshire.

Looking for James everitt(ett) deaths is inconclusive

Yes there are links but not strong enough

Any help may stop me going do-lally-tap

Kelvin

Was his father's name David Everitt?
Did he marry Sarah Ann Moore.
Did they have 9 children, one of whom was David Moore Everitt who fought in the Civil War?

Or perhaps that William Everitt was one of those 9 children and he had a mother named Sarah Ann Moore who married David Everitt. Does that sound familiar?
Are you Daniel Andrew Everitt who did the DNA test?

I understand your frustration!
I grew up with most of my father's family (Everitt's originally from Everittstown, NJ) fully versed in a family history story which I not only have trouble proving but I also face alot of people who are firmly convinced that all Americans who spell their names Everitt should be spelling it Everett.
As my grandmother would say "Sorry, that is another family!"

According to our family history a group of Everitts all left Suffolk, England near the town of Groton at the same time in about 1700 or just before. They went to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, probably by way of the area of the present New York City, and helped to form the town of Everittstown, NJ. They firmly spelled the name with an "I" not an "E". According to the family story, there were a number of groups of Everitts that came at various times in the very late 1600's through the early 1700's

Someone back in the early 1960's (I don't know who) told an older member of the family that they could confirm that because they had seen a plaque in the town of Groton, Suffolk that confirmed that Everitts (and perhaps others) had left for the colonies in 1700. Try as I might I have never been able confirm that there is such a plaque. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE IN GROTON, SUFFOLK, ENGLAND HELP ME!!

At the same time there was a man named Nicolas Everitt who settled in Jamaica, Long Island (in the NYC area). In his WILL he bequethed property that he owned in HUNTERDON, COUNTY NJ (That is where Everittstown is.)to his sons who were then living on that land in NJ.

NOW MUCH EARLIER IN THE 1600'S, A YOUNG TEENAGER BY THE NAME OF RICHARD EVERARD(?) WAS BROUGHT TO THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY BY A WEALTHY MAN NAMED PYNCHENDON AS AN ASSISTANT/AID. EARLY ON HE SIGNED HIS NAME ON AN AGGREEMENT WITH INDIANS BY "MAKING HIS MARK". HE SIGNED WITH AN "x". LATER, HE ADOPTED THE SPELLING EVERETT. HE IS THE DIRECT ANCESTOR TO MANY ILLUSTIOUS ACCOMPLISHED PEOPLE. IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT OVER THE YEARS MANY AMERICAN "EVERITTS" HAVE ADOPTED THE EVERETT SPELLING.

May I note that I have never found one of the Everittstown "Everitts" sign their own name with an "x", nor have I found them spelling their names as "Everett", or "Everard". Granted officials have made spelling mistakes but the family seldom did.

NOW IN THE 1700'S BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR THERE WERE 3 OF RICHARD EVERETT'S (Dedham, MA) SONS (OR WERE THEY GRANDSONS?) NAMED MOSES, JOHN, JAMES (OR JACOB) WHO HELPED TO BUILD OR MAINTAIN FORT EVERETT WHICH WAS ERECTED NEAR LYNNPORT, PA. IT WAS A BLOCKHOUSE 25 ft.x 30ft BUILT ON THE PROPERTY OD JOHN EVERETT, OF THE FAMILY OF RICHARD EVERETT OF DEDHAM. (See "Frontier Forts of PA" in the Newbery Library, Chicago, Illinois.) Now with modern roads and an auto, Lynn Township, Lehigh County, PA is not that far from Everittstown. But in 1700 to 1800 those 2 locations were a considerable distance away from each other.

Now I know that I am answering a query that was written almost 2 years ago. But I am hoping that both the original author and I will find others with more answers.

I do not doubt the the DNA research will find that many of the EVERETTS and EVERITTS were one and the same family in the year 1066 but then we all were the same family at one point.

Some people think that Robert and Ralph are one in the same but I don't. Ralph was born in Hope Township in April 1836, and married Adelaide Coleman in 1875. My kids are more interested now and I again have more energy and am starting to work on this family tree again. I had to give much of my original research back to my ex, but I still have some in storage and will dig it out soon as there were many dead-ends that I would like to expand.

Renee

hya hun --
i don't know where in the world you are - but . chelmsford is the county town on essex - if he was a blacksmith it is very likely that he was only in chelmsford at certain times - your best bet for everitt( ett, att, ette, itte, atte< et al ) is to look at the colchester area - there is a huge ever*tt contingent there - i know because mine are london based everitt's and i often get them muddled -

there is a church in ardleigh that is almost full of ever*tt graves , memorials and i believe a vault.

hope this helps some -- i often leave my research for a month or so just to keep sane then i come back to it ( like this weekend ) and add in 70 odd peoples !

good luck

pam

Re: Charles Edward or Edwin and Ella Everett (evritt, everitt)

Hello,

I located this information in a census. I thought Ella was Ella Roselie Perry - parents Thornton and Cynthia Perry. My gggrandfather was Ella Roselie's brother. Trying to find descendents. Please let me know any other info. You can contact me at lbjecat@kc.rr.com

1880 Census:
Listed on page 33, in Mineral Township, Jasper County, Missouri with husband Charles Everett or Evrett. Ella R. is listed as 18, born in Iowa. Charles is listed as 20, a farmer, born in Illinois. With them is their daughter, Maude M., born in February of 1880.

1900 Census:
Listed on page 238, in Joplin Township, Jasper County, Webb City, Missouri, taken on June 23, 1900. Spelling is Everitt. Ella is listed as born in Iowa, her parents born in Virginia (father) and Tennessee(mother). She is listed as born in Mar, of 1861, although in another census she is listed as born on March 9, 1862. Charles is listed as born in Illinois, in Aug of 1858. His parents are listed as born in North Carolina (father) and Tennessee (mother). His occupation is listed as Teamster. They rented their house. Number of years married is 24. She is listed as the mother of 11 children, nine of which are still living. There are 10 children listed, so Maude and one other must have died as Maude is not listed on this census.

Re: Richard (1) Everitt: two wives???? Why/How/Where??

I read your long message earlier today and it appears we have covered the same territory. My line is: Richard that I queried about having two wives; Nicholas who md. Elizabeth ---; Samuel who md. ??; Abel who md. Sarah Palmer; Sarah who md. Christopher Johnson. My co-researchers and I long ago spent a great dealof time, back in snail mail days, trying to find answers that still have not been foun. When I placed my query two years ago, it was my last shot at trying to find information that I had hoped had been found since that time, years ago. It appears some things will never be known or known for sure.
