Hi Marsha,

Thanks for replying so quick! My maternal grandmother was Annie Elizabeth Everly, daughter of Mahan Everly and Sallie Mauzy. Mahan's father was M. P. Everly all of Kentucky. I am just starting to search my family history and haven't gotten very far. I am hoping the book will shed some more light on it! Annie died on June 31, 1924 and my mom was fostered out so we have no information at all on any of her family. I would love to get a copy of your book. Please contact me so we can coordinate this.

Thanks so much, Judy Kuhn
tjkuhn@home.com

What is your connection to Everly?
To Simeon O. Everly. I am descended from Simeon I and have the "book" that was put together by Sondra a few years back. It is not a good copy-xeroxed-and I am interested in knowing if there is a better print of it available. I obtained my copy from my mother who received it from my uncle. It has been photo-copied so many times some of the pages aren't clear and I am also wondering if there is new information since then-although it was quite extensive. Is there a bound or nicely put together copy I can purchase? I would like to get a copy for myself, and eventually all my siblings. Thank you, hope to hear from you. Marcia

Thank you SO MUCH for going to all the trouble you did to find a death date for MY Peter. The birth and death dates are possible, but the parents listed are wrong for my Peter. And since he left Preston Co. with only 2 of his children and left his wife here, he probably didn't list any of his first family in his will. But I'll see. I was hoping maybe some of his direct descendants would get my message and be able to help. Thank you again.

Hi,
I'm looking at this same line. Hugh Gilliland Sr. and Elizabeth Martin Gilliland also had a daughter named Mahala who married Archibald Gividen and that is the line I descend from. I'm trying to find any evidence of the Hugh and Elizabeth's marriage. I'm also looking for Casper's wife's surname, Sarah???
I've got other data to share that you may have already, but we should compare notes.
Thanks.
michael

Now I know why Uniontown & Fayette County sounded so familiar to me. Nearly a year ago, I saw a document on Ancestry that gave a village (I think) named Brownsville as the birthplace of my grandmother. Apparently there is a river/stream/creek (pick one - or something else) between Fayette & Washington Counties, forming part of the county line. Brownsville either straddles that river or sits on one side or the other. The document gave Fayette County, so I looked up the county in Wikipedia, & the article said Uniontown was the county seat. Of course, this was before I found out that since Gram was born about 1892, the county didn't require birth certificates until a year or two later. Still, I think I would like to see the area where she was born & apparently lived a few years. She would travel to West Virginia & Pennsylvania every few years. I never knew why & it never occurred to me to ask her.

I better get going. Thanks for the info.

Sharon

Hi, I have never seen the Shaw book but know of it. I am wondering: Does it say anything about John Simon Eberle with b. & d. dates? Does it say anything about Adam Eberle? When he came from Gr.;locations in America? Did Adam marry? When, wife name, children names? Our Peter Smith b 1830 Va. d.1897 Pa.five children (two single women).Census shows they moved form Preston Co. WV between 1871 & 1879. respond to: jhanly@carolina.rr.com thank you.

Uniontown is in Fayette County, PA. My Everly family moved from Preston County, WV up one county across the state line into Pennsylvania. My father and his family lived in or near Uniontown. My grandfather was killed in a coal mine and we even found the old mine entrance, drawings, etc. I made a trip back there and spent several days researching. The library's Pennsylvania Room was excellent. York was very good too; the historical society was full of good stuff. Got to visit Preston County, WV. If there is something in the Shaw book I can help with, let me know. I corresponded with Mr. Shaw for several years.

You are quite welcome. Uniontown - I don't recall which county that's in, although it does sound familiar. I would love to look at that Shaw book. Our library down here doesn't have a copy. You are supposed to be able to rent a microfilm of it through the Family History Library, but all I found was a supplement to the original. Of course, the supplement does have more recent members of the Everly lines, like my grandfather & many of my aunts & uncles.

I don't know why, but I like the fact that g-g-g-grand-father Henry was a blacksmith as well as a farmer. I think he must have been very strong, although not a weightlifter-type.

So, where are you on your research? I'm not as far along on my Everly & Roberts lines as I am with my husband's, which is Rollins, from New England. Have you found any links to New England? I was shocked when I did - first through my mother's lines, & now maybe through my dad's.

In fact, one of Margaret Brandon's ancestors, Mary Armstrong, may have been born in Boston. Nothing written in stone there, yet. But her father was supposed to have been Matthew Armstrong. There was somebody by that name in Boston at the right time. Like I said, nothing written in stone, yet. Of course, if there's a gravestone near there... Only trouble is, most "gravestones" weren't made of stone then. Maybe a death record.

I better go. Good luck.

Sharon

You are right - there is a Henry between the 2 Peters. Didn't have all my notes in front of me! I use the Pioneers book too. Also one written by James Shaw entitled The Peter Everly Family. Believe there is a copy in the library in Uniontown, PA. I was able to get most of the birthdates, etc. since to join the DAR you need quite a bit of tangible info. Thanks!

I wish I knew how to tell you this, but Peter (of 1800's) was not the son of Peter, but the son of Henry, himself the son of another Peter. Henry's first wife, Peter's mother, was Elizabeth Lewis. Peter I's wife was Catherine Brauch/Bruach. I have a copy of a column from a newspaper that gives a lot of details on that. I also have a copy of the softcover book "Pioneers of Preston", from the Preston County Historical Society. The column is largely reprinted in the book, a collection of columns along the same line, just about different families.

If you wish, I can provide more information - birthdates, deathdates, etc. Just not this early in the morning.

Sharon

I am descended from Peter too, and descended from Alexander Brandon (1748), my DAR Patriot. He was married to Elizabeth Robinette (1749). His son was William Brandon (1781) who married Mary Gribble (1784). Their daughter Margaret Brandon (1815) married Peter Everly (1805). Peter is one of 3 sons of Peter. If I can help with your DAR research please let me know. Cathie

Yep, it looks like we are likely cousins. Peter's wife, Catherine, is a sticking point for me. She seems to pop up out of nowhere. Obviously, the alternate spelling of her last name might be some help. At any rate, it looks like another German name. Another sticking point is Henry's first wife, Elizabeth Lewis. A few years ago though, I didn't even know her first name. All I had was Miss Lewis, from somewhere in Pennsylvania. We hope to travel in 2 or 3 years & I'm looking forward to doing genealogy up close & personal in the actual records, assuming there are any.

But to get back to the question at hand. Henry's son Peter was born about 1809 in Preston County, West Virginia (Virginia at that time) & married Margaret Brandon. Their son William Henry Everly married Louisa Shaffer & Luvara (?) Shaffer. (The two ladies were cousins, or so I've heard.) Luvara gave birth to my grandfather, Tarleton Ashby Everly in 1887. He married my grandmother, Leona Mae McClain. In 1922, my father, Harry Lee Everly, was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, & in 1948, he married my mother, Mary Lou Roberts. Up until my parents, everybody else from Peter & Margaret on down, except for my grandmother Leona & possibly Luvara, was born in Preston County.

I don't know if you've ever heard of it, but there is a softcover book you might be interested in. It's called "Pioneers of Preston" & it's available from the Preston County Historical Society. The only trouble is, I don't believe it has Smiths. It does have Everlys. You didn't say where Peter Smith & his wife Elizabeth were married. There were Smiths in Preston County in the late 1850's, but whether they were related to Peter or not...??

I better get going. It's late. If I can help, just ask & I'll see what I have.

Sharon Lee Everly Rollins

I am searching for information on Peter Everly, b. Abt 1785 in what is now Preston Co., WV. I have information that he moved to Ohio about 1835. Another source said he died about 1880 in Fayette Co., PA, but I think this is a mistake. Wondering if there might be any record of his death in Fayette Co., Ohio?

death of Jack Steele Everley, 1946, Kansas

Although spelled "Everly" in the newspaper article, the family used the "Everley" spelling.

Herington Advertiser, Dickinson County, Kansas, March 21, 1946, page 1:
Jack S. Everly (sic) Killed By Rocket
16-Year-Old Herington HIgh School Sophomore Struck By R.I. Twin Star Rocket At White City Crossing, Friday Night
Jack S. Everly, the 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Everly of this city, was killed instantly about 11:30 last Friday night when he was struck by the southbound Rock Island Twin Star Rocket at the crossing near the White City depot.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Sunday afternoon, at four o'clock, and interment was made in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rev. Oscar Matthew officiated at the rites.
Going to White City to visit friends, Friday evening,Jack was accompanied there by E.G. Musgrove, Richard Spady and Morris Miller. The four young men had agreed to meet near the station and return to Herington together. Everly was seen running toward the crossing as the fast train approached, and may have attempted to cross to the depot ahead of the streamliner or possible stepped too closely to the track as the train approached. It is stated by railroad officials that the southbound Twin Star Rocket travels between seventy and seventy-five miles per hour at that point. Todd Benson of Herington was the engineer on the train, and Roy Finley of Kansas City was the conductor.
Everly was struck by the train, thrown a number of yards away from the track, up against the door of the White City depot. He was killed instantly.
In Herington Seven Years
Jack was born at Morland, Kansas, on June 4, 1929; he had lived in Herington with his parents for about seven years, coming here with his family in 1939. He was a member of the Sophomore Class of Herington High School, and a member of the Methodist church.
He lived with his parents at Morland until 1937, when the family moved to Denmark, Kansas, where they resided until coming here in 1939. Jack's chief vocational interest was mechanics, and for the past two summers he had assisted his father at the Farmers' Grain and Supply Company Elevator. He had had three years of Scouting, and was a member of the Boy Scout Troop in Herington.
Jack was consecrated in Christian Baptism when a small child, and was received into preparatory membership in the Methodist church at Morland. When the family moved to Herington, their membership was transferred here, and in June 1939 Jack was received into full membership with this church. He was also a regular member of the Banner Class of the Methodist Sunday School.
Interment took place in Sunset Hill cemetery, with Dale, Clarence, Harold and Royal Seigle and Emerald and Gilbert Wilkerson serving as pallbearers. Music was furnished by members of the Herington High School boys' quartette, including Allen Kifer, Robert Chesky, Dick Nelson and Daryl Rohloff.
Besides his parents, Jack is survived by two brothers, Lawrence Everly of Herington and Harold Everly of the home.

Hi, I'm Sharon Lee (Everly) Rollins, descended from Peter Everly. He married Catherine Bruach in a Lutheran church in Brickerville, Lancaster County, PA. They had at least 5 children, Sarah, Henry, Peter, Joseph, & Mary Ann. Henry is my line. Henry & his wife Elizabeth moved to Preston County, Virginia in late 1700's, maybe early 1800's. Their son Peter was born in Preston County about 1808. The theory that they probably changed their name is probably true. I have seen on other sites that the name was originally Eberle, which would be the German equivalent of Everly. If all this is so, they probably did so because of GB sending Hessian soldiers from Germany to America for the war. Some people were probably not happy with anybody that had a German-sounding name.

If you need any other information on Everlys, let me know. I have them up through Peter & his wife Catherine. Of course, I don't have much verification, just what I've found online, but I will be happy to share what I have.

Allen Everly - Greene County, PA - 1831-1864

Came across this article in today newspaper.

Thought it may be of interest to anyone out there researching this family.

Allen Everly unburied Grave of Greene Co. farmer who died in 1864 emptied

By Jon Stevens, Staff writer jstevens@observer-reporter.com

This article has been read 1501 times.

DILLINER - For 146 years, Allen Everly lay buried in a 40-foot-by-42-foot cemetery in Dunkard Township, a headstone marking his interment in 1864.

For all those years, Everly, a farmer who died at age 33, shared the hallowed ground in this remote burial plot off Old Water Works Road with his wife, one of his sons, parents and grandparents.

But Allen Everly isn't there anymore. Someone dug him up.

Deep in the woods, with no road or discernible path leading to the family graveyard, stands a tall granite monument, inscribed with the names of Allen Everly's immediate family.

A few feet away is a large hole, mounded on each side with muddy clay removed by shovelful after shovelful. The dense woods and steep hills would not have allowed the grave robbers to violate the sanctity of the site with mechanical means.

The empty grave was discovered July 15 by Bill Everly of Morgantown, W.Va., a distant cousin who tends to other nearby Everly cemeteries.

"I came to clean up other plots and decided to go down and check that other one out," he said. "I was shocked at what I saw."

Bill Everly, along with Patricia Furman Gray, who is related to Allen Everly through his mother, Clarissa Furman, are asking the same question: Why?

Authorities are unable to say exactly when the grave was disturbed because on April 10, Gray visited the cemetery and everything at the time was intact.

The state police trooper who investigated the incident July 16 has been unavailable for comment.

Carole and Garry Cole, who live near the cemetery, were aware Gray was coming to visit the cemetery.

"We knew how difficult it would be to find it," said Carole Cole, so her husband and Greg Barbe, a land agent for MEPCO, a coal company affiliated with Dana Mining in Dunkard Township, "marked a path to the cemetery by putting red paint on trees.

"We did that because we were not sure we would be home when Patricia came to see the cemetery," she said.

Cole said anyone who did not know where the cemetery was located would never be able to find it without a marked "trail."

Gray said when she learned the grave had been dug up, she was shocked. "I first thought it was randomly picked because it was such a remote cemetery," she said.

"But why did they pick Allen's grave? Was it because he died during the Civil War and someone thought there were valuables in the grave? I just don't know."

There does not seem to be any clear-cut evidence Everly served or fought during the Civil War.

Bill Everly, however, said he has a paper that said Allen Everly was drafted, but that is about the extent of any connection between Everly and the Civil War.

Of little means

Allen Everly was born Jan. 4, 1831, in Greene County and died May 28, 1864, in Greene County.

He was the son of Nicholas (1783-1856) and Clarissa Furman Everly (1803-1863); grandson of Adam (1750-1802) and Barbara Smith (1756-1816); and great-grandson of Leonard and Eva Marie Beckenbach Everly.

Allen Everly married Maria Brewer June 17, 1857, when he was 26, and they had two sons, Clinton, who was born in 1862 and died in 1864, and Enoch, who was born in 1864 and died in 1937.

The 1860 census lists Everly's assets at $1,600 for real estate and $500 in personal property.

Everly's last will and testament leaves everything to his wife and his infant son, Enoch, with the direction that his wife sell his threshing machine.

Getting to Everly's gravesite is a challenge, to say the least.

A side road off Old Water Works Road is accessible for about 100 yards, where a fallen tree blocks any further progress.

One morning last week, Carole Cole led a visitor to the site, warning of poison ivy and slippery conditions.

Following the marked trees for another 100 yards or so, one comes to a slope and just below is the cemetery.

It is surrounded by trees and brush so thick that someone could walk by it from 10 yards away and not see it.

"Someone had to know it was here," Cole said. "Maybe someone saw the markings on the trees and followed the route. Who knows?"

A shovel with a broken handle sits near Allen Everly's headstone, which had been knocked over and is covered with mud.

No other headstones or graves were disturbed.

An empty Budweiser beer case and soda bottles litter the cemetery.

But it's the starkness, the cleanliness of the grave, so to speak, that is most surprising.

Whoever dug up the grave made a shelf on one end, approximately 3 feet down, and then dug down about another 6 or 7 feet at the other end.

"Whatever was in here, if anything ever was, there is no evidence of it now," Cole said.

Although bones become increasingly fragile over time, it is not believed that enough time would have passed for Everly's bones to dissolve by the acidity of the soil, according to Dr. Lisa Ludvico, a DNA expert with the Cyril Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law at Duquesne University.

Ludvico said many factors would have to be taken into account, including temperature, humidity and moisture in the soil.

"If the conditions were wet, humid and hot, then preservation would be poor. Alternatively, arid, low humidity or very cold temps are great for preservation," she said. "Having said that, I think that the skeleton may be disarticulated (not all together; some parts decay faster than others) but the bones and dentition (teeth) would remain."

Gray speculated that perhaps whoever dug up the grave had plans of putting someone else in it. "Or maybe they were going to hide something in there and come back later and get it," she said.

The reason for digging up Allen Everly may never be known, unless police make an arrest.

Police said a red dump or utility-style truck, possibly a Ford, with welding tanks in the back had been seen in the area. The truck, police said, reportedly had an Ohio registration plate.

"This is definitely a puzzle," Gray said, "but what bothers me the most is that those who did this have absolutely no respect for the dead."

Believe Casper was the brother of Adam and Peter Everly who I am 90% certain I am descended from . I have been able to get some pretty good lineage info. I have seem several mentions of John Simon Eberle of Germany being their father and that they changed their name. Feel free to email me to compare notes. Lorelei525@aol.com

I've been trying to reasearch the Everly side of my family and I think this might be part of it. Some of the information fits. My grandfather was Rennie R Batsel b. 1898. His mother was Ella M Everly who married William E Batsel (could this be Ed?) I know he did have a baby sister who died as a baby and he did have a brother Roy who died at a young age. The dates and names seem to match except for the name William. My father went to live with his aunt Effie Batsel who married a James Brown. And her father's name was John I believe. If anyone has any information I'd be very appreciative. My direct email is Tiny1920@aol.com. Thank You!!
