A painting of the Barque White Sea of Boston by the German maritime artist Heinrich Andreas Sophus Petersen was sold at auction by Sotheby’s on 2 December 2005. This painting is inscribed "Barque White Sea of Boston Joseph Evans Master, Going Past Heligoland” and dated June 1859. In 2007 this same painting was sold by The Vallejo Maritime Gallery of Newport Beach California, and a fairly high quality image of it can be found in the Gallery Archives section their website vallejogallery.com. I have been researching Joseph Evans and the Barque White Sea because I believe that this is the ship that brought my great grandmother Anna Christina Pearson to America. It was interesting to learn that the ship’s master was German and that he had brothers in Gothenburg. My ancestor Pehr Pehrsson and his family embarked at Gothenburg in July 1859.
