I guess I'll throw my line in the water. I am the son of Lawrence Frank Evoy (b. 11 Apr 1915 Saginaw, MI d. 18 Jan 1985 Ithaca, MI); son of James Patrick Evoy (b 21 Jul 1884 Merrill, MI d. 27 Nov 1967 Lapeer, MI); son of William Moses Evoy (b Quebec 22 May 1836 d. 9 Jan 1892 in Saginaw, MI, (married to Arabella V. Morden); son of Garrett Evoy (b. 1785-1814 Ireland d. 1837-1877 Saginaw, MI, (married to Catherine Stafford). We seem to be stuck on Garrett. Has anyone been able to break through that wall back to Ireland?

Jocelyn, I don't want to impose, but if you're not too tired of making copies of your book I would gladly reimburse you for your time and expense.

My email: Jeff@Evoy.us

Jeffrey Allen Evoy (b.
Hello Jocelyn,
Please pass on my best regards to your Uncle Frank. Wow! On the book! It would be wonderful for me to get a copy and I would be willing to compensate you for your expense. I hesitate to post my email address on a public board but would love to contact you direct if possible.
I have been trying to trace my family for many years but have hit the well known "brick wall". My GGGrandfather was a James Evoy whose wife was Elizabeth. Unfortunately for me, there are at least two sets of James and Elizabeth and I am stuck trying to find out which one to zero in on.
Good to hear from you!
Cheers, Fred

Hello Jocelyn,
I was just going through some of the postings re the Evoy family on ancestry.ca and came across your post re a book called "The Evoy Heritage" that you were updating following a family reunion in 2000. I have had some previous email and letter exchanges with Frank Evoy from Sault Ste Marie some years ago, but I think he may have passed on. I would be interested in having a look at this book and was wondering if a copy is available, either hard copy or electonic, and how I could get a copy of it?
Cheers, Fred

Hello Josh, I'm not sure when you posted this message but if you do get it there are lots of Evoys in the area of Sault Ste Marie Ontario which is just on the border of Sault Ste Marie Michigan. We are decendents of John Evoy who came to Canada from Ireland in the early 1800's. We know that he had a brother Mathew who settled in the area of Sarnia Ontario and another brother Darby that went to western Canada. We are having a family rerunion this year and there should be a few hundred people there.

Your mother, Monica, and my father, Ivan Guyitt, were cousins through the Adnam Family. My grandmother, Bertie Adnam and your grandmother, Vally Longman Stinson were friends. My mother said that Vally's funeral was one of the few times she met any of the Adnam relatives. My father, mother, and an aunt and uncle took a bus trip years ago to a tatoo and Gord and Audrey were on the same bus and they reconnected and visited back and forth thereafter.

When my youngest son received his Chief Scout of Canada award your father was the guest speaker.

There were also other Evoy's Patrick Lawrence Moses & Nicholas.
I have been researching the Evoy family with help from my
Canadian cousin. Our branch goes back to Jeremiah Evoy born 1750 in Kilkenny Ireland. My grandfather William Thomas immigrated from Canada to the USA. My father is now deceased, Thomas John Evoy. My father and his father and some of his siblings moved to Michigan in the early 1920's.
MED

Hello Rhona Jordon,

Much time has passed since you posted your original message and not sure if you still check this website. I'm afraid that I don't have any information to provide you with however I'm wondering if my family and I may be some branch of the Evoy's in Canada that you spoke of.

Unfortunately I know little to nothing about my ancestory as the family book, that listed family back to Ireland when we were the McEvoy's, was stolen. Thus I'm having to start fresh. I only know that my grandfather was born in Saskatchewan before he moved to the Niagara Region. The only Evoy's left that I know of are my father, sister, brother and I.

Anything you know of the Evoy's in Canada would be greatly appreciated. It's hard to not know where we came from when there are so few of us left here.

Thanks,
Carol

I am not a descendent of Peter Evoy, but was wondering if anyone researching his family has any information on the Smith side. Alice Smith Evoy had a sister Rose who married Ethan Mowrer/Mourer (many different spellings) in Bloomington, IL, McLean County. In the 1880 census, they lived at 715 Ohars St. with their two boys George and Frank. They later moved to Chicago, but Rose died in 1891 and her body was returned to Bloomington for burial. In her obituary in The Pantagraph, Moses Evoy was mentioned as her nephew.

If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.

Andrea

Thank you for the information. There is a Patrick Evoy that lived in Sangamon County and this James maybe a son or grandson of his. There is just a handful of Evoy's in Illinois and I believe that they are related but I cannot connect them all yet. Please contact me direct if you wish to discuss this further.

Pat

I am researching the Peter Evoy family. Peter was born Mar 1833 in Wexford County Ireland. He came to America when he was 8 years old and lived in Ohio for a period of time and then went to Illinois. He was in Sangomon County for a time and then lived out the rest of his life in Mclean County. He married Alice Smith in 1861 and had six children: Moses, Mary, Rose, James, Margaret, and Katie.

If anyone has any information on this family I would appreciate your contacting me.

Thanks
Pat

Norma,
Mary Evoy born 11 Jun 1841 in Huntly Twp., Ontario was a daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Jury) Evoy and my 2nd great grand aunt. While born in Huntly Twp., Hannah grew up in Adelaide, Middllesex County, where in 1874 she married Bernard McMahon. For some 10 years after their marriage, Mary and Bernand lived around Metcalfe, Middlesex before moving on to Millington, Michigan. As much as I would love to have the the photo album, I have had past contact with a second great grandson of Bernard and Mary (Evoy) McMahon, making Thomos and Hannah (Jury) his 3rd great grandparents. He descends from Bernard and Mary's daughter Ida Anne McMahon. He has reseached the Evoy and McMahon families extensively and I know he would "die" for such a photo album.

I have not corresponded with this Thomas Evoy descendant recently but will immediately attempt to get in touch with him. As I am not aware if he is subscribed to this board, I will have him contact you directly by email, should I be successful in getting in touch with him.

It is so kind of you to make this effort to see that the Evoy photo album gets to someone than can really appreciate and care for it.

Thanks,

Jerry

Thomas Evoy who married Hannah (Jury) Jovey had four children baptised and they are in the Wesleyan Methodist Church Registers - Naomi, Miriam, James Ephraim & Ann, other children are George, Mary, Emily & Susannah. This couple can be found on various sites including census records for 1851 & 1861 in Adelaide Twp. Also found are Richard Evoy who married Adelaide Jury. Many of this family are found in Oil Springs & Petrolia as well as Strathroy.

I am not interested in the Evoy's from a personal perspective. As editor of Trails a publication of the Windsor Essex County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society I am searching for surviving family members in regards to an album of old family photographs. A lady from Hamilton has approached us to help repatriate this album.

The only clue was that of an obit for Naomi E. Harvey, who is Naomi Evoy. She married Lewis Harvey and had two sons, and they at some point must have moved to Watertown Tuscola Michigan. Another Evoy Anna married George McNinch and she too lived in Tuscola.

Lewis Harvey who married Naomi was the son of Gavin Harvey (Harvie) and Rachel Harvey (Harvie) all of whom were born in Nova Scotia. Much has been submitted on the Harvie's who came from Hants Co. Nova Scotia. Gavin Harvin & his second wife Elizabeth moved to Tillsonburg, Ontario.

Since the majority of photographs were taken in Strathroy I am assuming that this album should probably go to Evoy family members who are descended from those who would have lived in and around - Adelaide Twp., Strathroy, Oil Springs (Petrolia).

Many members of this family have been buried in Strathroy Municipal Cemetery.

Norma Chantler
Editor - Trails, a publication of the
Windsor Essex County Branch
Ontario Genealogical Society.

Evoy inheritance

Lately, I responded to an email on the rootsweb Wexford board that was enquiring about DNA/inherited genes, specifically Syndactyly or 'webbed toes'.
I thought I was the only person with this condition in my family. The second and third toes of each foot are joined by skin up to the first joint. However, I've found that a cousin (once removed) has it and his father (my great uncle) also had it, so it seems to run in the male line. I've been meaning to ask the wider Evoy 'clan' if they know of it in their family but hadn't got round to it.
I'm also interested in finding the source of the Evoy name, found mainly in Wexford. It's probably McEvoy as McLysaght suggests but there is another transported Leix sept, Deboy or Devoy that could be the forebears. I need to spend some time on it.
If any Evoys out there have 'webbed toes' or other family traits, it would be nice to hear from you.
Regards, JimEvoy

Evoys

Hi Josh - and everyone else! I'm from Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada. My relatives have done some investigating re: our family and what a prolific group the Evoys are! A book "The Evoy Heritage" was put together in 1973 by an older cousin and it contains a LOT of info/names. Just for starters...My GGG grandfather John (b. 1798) came to Canada in 1826. Two of his brothers (Matthew and Darby) arrived in 1821. John had three children. The middle child John Jr. (b. 1818, d. 1903), had 10 children, the 2nd being William (b. 1845, d. 1924). From William to the present, the book lists all family up until 1972 (several? hundred). We have begun to update this book and list as of our 2000 Evoy reunion which attracted more than 300 people from several different branches of the family.
If anyone wants more info, please contact me and I'll see what I can do. Also, if anyone can go farther back in the line than the three brothers (John, Matthew Darby), please let me know!
Thanks!
Jocelyn
