A codicil (11 Nov 1913)to the will of James Ewart late of Tullycallidy County Armagh in Northern Ireland refers to his daughter, Matilda Jane Ewart, a nurse, residing in New York City, could this be the same Matilda to which you refer. I understand that there were other connections who resided in Dublin. I am related to James through my mother whose maiden name is Ewart.

Re: Decendants of Robert Ewart

I descend from a line of Ewart's who also came from Ireland to Washington Co., PA. James Ewart is first found on an early census, maybe 1800. We think he came just after the Rev. War. He had sons David bn 1 Jun 1785(my ancestor)one record shows him born in Ireland,Joseph, and 4 daughters. David and his family moved on a flatboat down the Ohio River and settled in Butler Co., OH. David was married to Hannah Clark. His brother Joseph married Mary Rail and died in Butler Co. David and his family went on to Brookville, Franklin Co. OH where David died in 1830. Hannah and children moved to Warren, Huntington Co., IN where she died in 1860. Their children were James S (marr. Charlotte White), John C born 1810 PA, Jane (marr. Israel First), William *my ancestor (marr 1st Elizabeth Titus, 2nd Sarah Kirkpatrick & 1 other), Mahlon D., David E., Samuel C., & Joseph E.B. Ewart brn 1827 in Franklin Co. Others were born in OH, except first 2 boys born PA, and maybe Jane in PA. Some left IN later including my William and moved to Greenup, Cumberland Co. IL. My great grandfather was Thoms Kirkpatrick Ewart born 1862 in Greenup, IL and died 1948 in Helena, Phillips Co. AR. I don't know if any of the descendants of my James migrated to Iowa or not. I would really like to know where in Ireland they came from. I've been to Ireland twice, have fallen in love with the country, and have traveled from east to west and north to south, and plan to go again, maybe next year. It would be nice to find the hometown of James Ewart. I've collected a few items that have the Ewart name on them, but it would be great to walk on their soil. My mother was a Ewart. Her older brother was another David Ewart.
Ida C. Madison idamadison@aol.com

In regards to the town of Ewart and that family, my great grandmother, Maggie Ferson was a house servant for Robert Ewart as was listed in the 1880 census. I am trying to find any info on her time spent working for that family and or photos that she may be in. She came from Ireland in 1879 and I believe came to that area because of family already living there. I have been to Ewart-or what is left of the town several times and photographed many of the grave stones and probably can get a picture or two also of the area.
Hope to hear back from you,
Cheryl

The area of the county he settled in is Geneseo, now Livingston county. He born about 1745, Armagh county, North Ireland.

Hi ewartd.....this is a confusing board, I'm not sure who's answering who! Anyway, I'm back doing Cobourg Ewarts for my BC nephews.

My Mom, nee: Mary George Campbell (1904-1976) married Murray Edgerton Ewart in 1921. They had 3 kids: Edgerton (aka Edgar)(1921-1976); Sheila Mary (1926-2006); Marion Eagleson (1929-1999). I'm the only child by Mom's 2nd marriage, so they were my 1/2 sisters & brother.

Murray was the 3rd son of Marion Eagleson (1869-1964) & David S. Ewart (1866-1951). Marion & David were both born in Cold Springs (north of Cobourg) and both died in Cobourg at their Albert Str home.

They had 4 sons: James Alexander 1 Oct 1897; Donald David 25 Feb 1900; Murray Edgerton 9 Jan 1899; John Beatty(aka Jack) 3 Apr 1904 ~ all of whom were born in Cobourg. They are all dead.

"Grampa",David S. Ewart, was the 9th of 11 children. His father was John Ewart, born 1823 in Ireland - died 1893 in Cold Springs. His mother was Mary Pink, born 1829 in Ireland. The only other knowledge I've discovered about Ireland is that John 1823 had a brother James also a Mariner in the shipping business.

If you want the family tree I have, email me ~ wellbelove@sympatico.ca

I'm Looking for relatives of Harry/Henry Ewart a native of Annan, Dumfries, Scotland, born to Thomas and Isabella Ewart. He was tried at the Cork Barracks on 8 Dec 1841 for desertion from his unit, the 25th Regiment. He was then convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Van Diemens Land, arriving on the "Isabella Watson" on 5 Aug 1842.

There is some difficulty with establishing the family of Henry as it appears he married two women, one in October 1852 and another in November 1852! One of his sons Robert Ewart was a noted prospecter in Western Tasmania.
I believe Harry died on 15th Jan 1887 in Longford, Tas.

I also have the same problem of not being sure where ancestors were born Ireland or Scotland, I have always been told Ireland, but, upon reading your message there seems to be some kind of a connection. My grandfather was James Alexander Ewart and he has or had a cousin(?) named John (married to Mary) they were from Scotland and I have been told that my great great grandfather was a ship's captain.
Hi, I am related to David Ewart of Cobourg, he is my father's cousin. My greatgrandfather was Dave Ewart who was married to Marion Eagleson they had four sons, James Alexander, Murray, Jack and Don. I am trying to find information about Dave Ewart's family, I heard that his father was a ship's captain from Ireland. Do you have any information about this? I do not know of any marriages to Roddick, sorry.

Ewart Family Carlisle, England

Looking for some connections out there and any info on the family would be great. My great-grandfather Harold Parker Ewart was born in Carlisle to John Nichol Ewart and Lizzie Brown Parker. John Nichol was also born in Carlisle, son of Thomas Ewart and Mary Ann Nichol.- After that it's a guess. I believe Thomas was born to John Ewart and Ann Little.

My great -grandfather had a sister Annie, 3 brothers that i know of- Stanley, Oliver and Reginald. I have absolutely no personal info on my family - just names and and a few dates.

Hoping I have a cousin out there who can help me out!

Hi That sounds as if there might be a connection. Scotland's People is a wonderful source for tracing your ancestors in Glasgow. No, Thomas is not a family name - but then neither is Dale. My second name is Margaret after my great grandmother.I live in Australia. My father, his siblings and my grandfather migrated here in 1912.
Am keen to hear from you when you have done some research and happy to share info with you.

Hi. In response to the message below, I'm wondering if you can go back earlier than 1904.
My great grandfather was Robert Ewart born 1830.
He married Margaret Coulter in 1853 and they had 8 children.
The oldest son was James Ewart born 1853.(my grandfather Alexander was the next son) James married Jessie Livingston and they had 5 children. Their second son was James and he was born in 1882.
All of the above were born and lived in Glasgow.
I can't come any further forward than that, but the similarity of family names Robert and James made me wonder if there was any connection.

I am married to a descendant of Ewarts from London and family lore is that one of them, George or Harold, not sure married a German dancer. I am closely related to John William and John Henry Ewart who are descended from George Ewart who came from Scotland. Ewart is a very scottish surname. They ran a company in London which made gas boilers. Are either of these two connected?

My mother is a Ewart, and I have attempted to take up the research that one of her Ewart aunts did many years ago. She established through records that James Ewart came from Ireland with an infant son, David, my line, who was either born in Ireland or perhaps at sea. James settled in Washington Co., PA in the late 1700's. David married and moved to Butler Co, OH, and then to Indiana where he died leaving a wife and minor children. I took the name to the library in Dallas where the director of genealogy is quite a prominent writer and researcher, and of German descent. He took one look at the name and declared that it was German. I have found it in German records spelled Ewert, rather than Ewart. So perhaps they did come from that area originally. I don't know if there is a Ewart DNA project, but I do still have some male Ewart cousins around. I've also been told that Ewarts came originally from Scotland, and on American census records found them listed as Hewitt and told sometimes spelled Youart and probably other variations.

Hi Mark, sorry it's a bit late to be making contact, I've just seen the date you posted your london Ewart enquiry.
I also have Ewarts based in London, from 1837 to date. It wold appear that they made one single leap from Scotland, however, you do wonder if they had family already established in london already! Mine seem to be in the Bermondsey/deptford area (yes south of the river). I haven't found any european connection, yet it dosen't mean there isn't one. The other reason for getting intouch,is that I was looking at your other enquiries re Wiltshire records. It's very strange, but I used to live in Market Lavington, which is next to West Lavington. If it is on any help, both Lavington's come under the sailsbury diocese, which may be a bit more "online". Let me know if I can help with anything. Helen

Hello John
I was most interested in your message, although I'm sorry I can't help with your particular request.
My great grandfather was Robert EWART born in Northern Ireland in 1831. His parents were James EWART and Janet HILL. And ..that is all I know.

I had always believed my heritage was Scottish as my grandparents (and all their families) were born in Glasgow as were my father and his nine siblings. My father, five siblings and my grandfather migrated to Australia in 1912.They nearly went on the Titanic to America !

When I started to do some genealogy five years ago I discovered that my great grandather Robert had died in the Barnhills Poorhouse, Glasgow and his death certificate gave his birthplace as Ireland. He seems to have been rather a scoundrel and dependent on poor relief. I subsequently discovered that every time he applied for poor relief he was 'removed' to Ireland because the place where you were born in those days was responsivble for such relief. Somehow he seemed to keep coming back to Glasgow where he married and had 7 children.

The family were all protestant so I am presuming it was Northern Ireland. Since then I have read quite a lot about how close it was was from Belfast to Scotland and the continual movement of people between these two countries.

Irish records for this period are very scarce and I just haven't been able to get any further. I'm wondering if you can tell me anymore about YOUR Ewart family. Do you know for instance the father and grandfather of James Clarke EWART ?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated

Dale Margaret Vagg (nee Ewart)

Hi Mike

I am new to this geneology stuff, so please forgive my ignorance!!

A chance comment by my mother yesterday got me intrigued - she said that she had a relative that had suvived the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.

My mothers maiden name is Ewart, and on looking into this in google - hey presto I find that a Robert J Ewart was one of the survivors, and that he was returning home to Ireland to visit his mother.

The Ewart family to which I am related come from the townland of Tullicalliday, near the village of Killylea in County Armagh, Northern Ireland (not to be confused with Killyleagh County Down N Ireland.

My mother , now 72, is one of six children born to James Clarke Ewart, JC Ewart married quite late in life, he was born about 1884 and he died about 1966. If Robert Ewart was 37 when the Lusitania sank this would, leave him being born about 1878. My mother was not aware of her father having had a brother who went America but it is possible or more likly to be a cousin, if a relation at all.

There are still quite a lot of Ewarts in the Killylea area, the family church is Lisloney Presbyterian Church, If Robert Ewart emigrated to America from Killylea then it is most probable that he was babtised in Lislooney.

I would be interested to find out any more info on Robert Ewart, especailly if you have any info which might help to establish if he did indeed come from Killylea in County Armagh.

Hope to hear from you,

Regards

John Murray

POW/MIA Korean War EWART

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania as his home of record.

Soldier: JACK FRANKLIN EWART
Born: 1932
Date of loss: Feb 13, 1951 MIA
RA13272638
Hq Co 15th Field Art Btn, 2nd inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Re: Ewart surname

In response to the name Ewart being used as a christian name instead of a surname in your family tree. There are a couple of ideas as to why.1) Your Irish connection. Many Ewarts seem to come from Ireland. Either they were Scots and went to Ireland or Irish and went to Scotland? who knows but, the "red hand of Ulster" appears in the Ewart family coat of arms, so Ireland comes into it somewhere.
2) Celebrities of the time. Just as today we name our children after famous or people we want our children to aspire to. Ewart Gladstone "Prime minister", would have been a well known name of the time, even his first name was handed down from his father and his grandfather,(so I have been told) was a friend on one of my ancestors, allegidly...! Hope this helps. Helen

Does anyone recognise its origins from the small amount of information I have -
- Harry EWART Warren
- Henry EWART Warren
Mother of these two was Ellen Deery(Derry, o'Deary)born in 1861, Canada.Father of Ellen appears to be Michael from Ireland and mother of Ellen could be Susanna from England.Could the mother or father have of had EWART surname somewhere in the family line and passed it on to their children????
Would appreciate any clues as to the EWART thread in our family name.
