I am interested in Isaac Ewer. I am trying to determine who his parents were. I believe it was Henry Ewer of Ware who was born in 1570 and died in 1639 and was married to Sarah Lynell who died in 1637. They also had a son Thomas who immigrated to USA on the "James" in 1635. Do you have any additional information? I can also be reached at chubbydewer@hotmail.com I have the EWER family bible from Charles Ewer dated 1817 that goes back to Thomas Ewer who died in 1632.

Yes, I am researching the Ewer ancestry because it has not been done to my knowledge. I am looking for information about Charles Bourne Ewer who lived in Dedham, MA and m. Charlotte Billings Mann. I do have alot on the Mann family. Charles was apparently killed in a mining accident in CA gold rush. I can't find relatives, date of death, etc. Interesting.

My dad was employed by the Ford Motor Co. and retired in Oakville Ontario as a General Foreman.

The Charles Ewer we are related to moved to Brighton in or about 1822 from Bursledon South Hampton. His father was Philemon III. I will send to you some of what I have recorded.

Not as of yet but we are working on it. I have a copy of one of his 3 marriage certificates as he married Sarah Edwards on 28 Feb 1829. Prior to 1857 I believe we have to look for baptism records as no birth certificates were prepared. Charles only mentions his first child born in 1818, 28 April but died 19 May (Charles). If you e-mail my home address I can send you what I have put together. What is your connection to the family?
chubbydewer@hotmail.com

I have the family bible dated 1817 originally owned by Charles Ewer born in 1796 and died Sept. 1870 in Brighton. The family history in the bible goes back to about 1627. I have a lot of information going back to that time and two other family relatives who have been doing research as well.
Re: Edward EWER, EWER family in Berkshire in 1700's?

Hi Richard

I'll have to post again as I think my original went into the cyberspace ether!!

Thanks for that extensive information, it is, as you say, fascinating putting all this together. It involves proper deductions and detective work!

Like yourself, Emma Ewer was my great great grandmother. She and James Henry Norris had another daughter named Annie Henrietta who married a Thomas Henry Gatty which is where my line is from.

I also saw the 1841 Census (Clewer) with Chas (Charles) and Rachel. His work is that of a baker. I also saw the 1851 Census where he is now a 'General Dealer'. This ties in nicely with the death certificate you found from 1853 where he described as a 'Dealer in Metals'.

Interestingly, where one often assumes that people in this period tended to remain in one or similar types of occupation throughout their life, they sometimes do change to something seemingly very different. I've seen this a couple of times with some of my ancestral lines. No doubt you have too?

It was at this point when I saw Charles Ewer, from Windsor, but no sign of our Emma which stumped me. The permutations of your research certainly are plausable. Emma Appleton as seen in the 1851 Census is certainly a lead. Have you seen an entry for Elizabeth Appleton's (her possible mother) death prior to the 1851 Census, or even around or after this year? It may very well be likely that Emma could have been, if not Charles' natural child, a child of a friend or relative. When one considers the protocol of the period it could have been the embarrasment and stigma attached, hence the term 'Visitor'? This is conjecture however.

If this Charles Ewer, then, is a link (parent or guardian) to our Emma Ewer it gives much promise to Matt's and your own leads into Charles' background, Thomas Ewer and Jane Compton (his parents) - who it appears moved into London according to Sarah Jane Charlotte Ewer being baptised 25 Sept 1799 in East London (Stepney). It would be interesting if they appear (Thomas and Jane) on any Census, though they may have died before these happened considering their likely ages? It all adds to the tree possibly.

Of course another London connection is that Frederick (aged 24, and Charles Ewer's son) in the 1851 Census, as you say, is in Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster with his wife Elizabeth. I have seen something similar in other lines of mine here Richard. I had a line from James Cook, his son William Cook, who had a much younger brother, called George. It ended up that George lived with William, his older brother, that I saw in a couple of Census, noted as a 'Boarder' if I recall. James Cook had died when George was very young. Again applying this to our Emma, if she's connected to the Charles Ewer we have here is a stab in the dark, though highly plausable - and fascinating!

Unfortunately I do not have any further info on our Emma or her 'father'. I was very stuck on this one, and is one of the more confusing lines I had to unravel. So your information is much welcomed and appreciated!

I do however have some related things to the Norris line. I have the James Henry Norris (our great great grandfather) death certificate if you require? I also have some photos that I took a few years ago of the World's End area. It is very much changed consisting mostly of modern flats. There are however some small period cottage-like buildings and the original World's End Passage is there still, though it is just that - a passage with no buildings now! I also have a photo of World's End Passage circa 1840s.

I have, on the British Online History site, seen a very good entry for 'World's End', it describes in detail how it grew and developed, its character and types of building. The most interesting thing is that it mentions a Thomas Norris of 1726 which suggests that he built some housing there! Maybe he owned some land? I have not made any great attempt to see whether James Henry Norris (our great great grandfather), Henry Norris his father (who married a Charlotte Rose I believe) are descended somehow from this Thomas Norris, though the name is some evidence maybe? I could link this to you, if you have an email address, also for the photos if you would like those? I do not myself have the Charles Ewer death certificate and would welcome a scan if possible? My email is rssg@aol.com

Many, many thanks for the indepth information you have given, Richard, though like much research it opens up more questions than answers to what's it all about and where do we come from:-)

Regards

Ross
Re: Edward EWER, EWER family in Berkshire in 1700's?

Hi Ross

Emma Ewer was my great-great-grandmother. She and James Norris had a daughter Elizabeth who married (eventually) a James Henry, and I am descended from them.

I, too, have the marriage certificate. Unfortunately, as you know, as her father, Charles Ewer, was deceased, it meant that this replaced his trade or profession. However, I have found him in Windsor and he is part of Matt’s family. I have ruled out the Emma Ewer from Chelsea because her father was Thomas and he came from Hertfordshire. Also, this Emma would have been three years too old.

Charles Ewer died in New Windsor on 10 April 1853. This would fit with the 1860 marriage and Emma’s Census records. His Death Certificate says that he was 54, i.e. born about 1799, that he was a Dealer in Metals etc., a Frederick Ewer (no relationship given) reported the death and that he lived at 11 Market Street, New Windsor. I have not found this address in the 1851 Census yet. If you give me an e-mail address, I will send an image of this, as soon as I fix a gremlin in the scanner.

In the 1841 Census, I found Chas Ewer (40), a Baker, living in New Windsor (parish of Clewer), with his presumed wife Rachel (30) and children – Fredk (15) and Caroline (10). The address seems to be Alms Houses in Pease Street.

After a great deal of searching, I finally found the family again in the 1851 Census. Ancestry had listed him as “Emes”, whereas the entry is fairly clearly “Ewers” (now corrected). He is again abbreviated to just Chas and he is living in what looks like 15 Peascot Street, Clewer.

Chas (52) is a General Dealer and born in Windsor. His wife, Rachel (40) is from “Woodcut” in Oxfordshire. Caroline (19) is still at home and a “Miliner” (sic). Chas must be doing well because there is a servant, Hannah May (21). The really fascinating thing is that there is a Visitor called Emma Appleton (9) born in Old Windsor.

In the same Census, there is Frederick Ewer (24), a Furniture Broker (hard to read the writing), born in Windsor, his wife Elizabeth (23) and sister-in-law Catherine Coram (13), who is a Scholar, both born in London. I have not been able to trace the Coram’s yet, but Frederick Ewer married Elizabeth Coram on 11 April 1848, at Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster.

Naturally, I have focused on the Visitor, Emma Appleton. There is such a child baptised on 13 March 1842, in Clewer, Berkshire, with just a mother named – Elizabeth. Now, I am down to speculation. Was Elizabeth a friend or even a relative and the Ewers took in Emma? If Elizabeth was dead, then surely they would not have called Emma a Visitor. There is an Elizabeth Appleton (30) living in Dedworth, New Windsor in 1841, with a John and Sarah Chapman. There are four younger Appleton’s too, which could suggest this woman was a widow. I can not find her in 1851, nor the Chapman’s, but I shall keep looking.

Our Emma calls Charles Ewer her father. Was this just a compliment to the man that took her in or to cover the fact that she was born out of wedlock? Even more extreme would be that Charles was the biological father and Emma was the result of an affair (Elizabeth could have been a previous servant).

I had discovered that Charles married Rachel Tallant on 14 May 1834, in Clewer, which was after Frederick and Caroline were born. However, Matt has helped me out by telling me that Rachel was his second wife and telling me about his first wife, Sarah Bunny.

They married in Clewer on 30 Sep 1817. Both were of the parish, neither had previously married, and both signed their name. The witnesses were Thomas Ewer (signed) and Jane Ewer (her mark). Whether Thomas was his father or brother is not determined.

The parish register for the parish of New Windsor records that Charles’ wife Sarah was buried on 17 Jul 1833, aged 39 years. Their address is recorded as George St (they were living there 7 years earlier when their son Frederick was baptised).

Charles and Sarah had six children, including a Charles baptized 14 Jun 1818 in New Windsor, the above named Frederick and Caroline. The young Charles married Sarah Cheeseman on 29 Oct 1839 in Brighton, Sussex and carried on living there.

Matt also has a lot of information about Charles senior’s family and the names of his parents, Thomas and Jane. He knows that Thomas married Jane Compton on 27 Apr 1790, but nothing more about their origins.

The last of the children baptised in Windsor is a “Harriett ('over Charlotte'), baptised 19 October 1800”. The name Charlotte is interesting because a Thomas and Jane Ewer have a daughter Sarah Jane Charlotte Ewer baptised 25 September 1799 at St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney. The potential family name link to our Emma Sarah Jane is tantalising.

And that is as far as I have got with our Emma and her father Charles. Let me know if you have anything else.

Richard

Hi Richard

Thanks for your message. Emma was/is quite elusive. All I have on her is a marriage certificate from 1860 with James Norris in Chelsea. Her father is Charles (deceased) but informs us that she was born in Windsor, Berkshire. This was where it became unclear for me, as there was no reference in any census for her in this area.

Matt did have info on her being born in Middlesex(St.Lukes) in 1842 if I recall. If you would like her marriage certificate I could scan and send it so you can confirm or rule things out.

Regards

Ross

I would be very interested to hook up with any of the Ewers on this board to fill in more branches of our family tree. James Ewer, born 1777 in Weasenham, is my 4G grandfather. I was born in London but moved over to Michigan a few years back I would be interested to trace the family's crossing of the Atlantic, including a branch right here in MI! Please drop me a line at mike@ewer.me.uk

Hi Phyllis,
probably a bit of a stretch, but I have an Edward Ewer, born about 1790 in England. Might not have used the words "world traveller" though as it looks pretty sure that he was a convict sent out here in 1821, arriving 1922 onboard the Mary II (2). He was pardoned in 1834 and died in Bathurst NSW in 1859. Even if he was the brother of your GGGrandfather, that would still make him about 26 years older, which is a bit far apart, although not unheard of. Need to do a bit more research into him, have only recently discovered him. I cannot find any male deaths of Ewer's between 1850 and 1905 in NSW with a fathers name of either Frederick, Harry, Harold or Alexander, so no-one else is showing up either, but of course, they could have gone to another state. Let me know if it rings any bells. Regards, Megan
EWER --
Ottilie Vivian Ewer,
known to friends and family as "Ottie", beloved wife and mother,
passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 5, 2008,
in Albuquerque, NM.
A recent resident of Albuquerque,
she was born in Los Angeles, CA on December 10, 1918 to Otto and Vivian (Marshall) Fries,
former Vaudeville stars with the Pantages Theater Troop in the early 1900's.
Raised in the early Hollywood area where her father was an adult cast member of the" Our Gang" comedies
and other comedy motion picture roles.
She lived briefly in Frankfurt, KY
during her first marriage until her husband's death, moving back to Los Angeles with her daughter, Natalie Barlow.
During WWII, she worked at the Lockheed Aircraft Plant in Burbank, CA in the Fuselage Assembly Section as a "Rosie, the riveter". On Dec. 8, 1946, she married H. Bruce Ewer, beginning 61 plus years of marriage. About a year later, after the October birth of their son, Christopher Ewer, the family moved to Weed, CA.
After almost 9 years of country living,
the Ewer family moved to the Monterey Peninsula where Ottie and Bruce lived in Pacific Grove, CA for over 50 years. In September of 2006
they moved to Albuquerque to be closer to their
son, Chris, and his wife, Lynette.
While in Pacific Grove, Ottie,
worked as an administrator for the City of Monterey, the Monterey Sanitation Department,
Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.,
and as a substitute teacher at Lincoln Jr. High School in Seaside, CA.
It was while living in Pacific Grove that she resumed her artistic career in various venues.
She painted in oils, watercolors,
drew in charcoal, pastels, pencil,
and ink while dabbling in photography.
She became an accomplished ceramics artist and her pieces often won "Golden Bear" awards (First Place) at the Monterey County Fair.
Some of her greatest accomplishments were her award winning knitting skills which she honed over a 50 year period. Many a family member bride and groom received an afghan for a wedding gift or later, a knitted baby blanket or sweater to their newborn. During the 1960's and '70's, Ottie and Bruce raised Brittany Spaniel hunting dogs, which they hunted over, showed, and field trialed, with great success. Ottie was always disappointed that she was never allowed to complete her course of study at the Los Angeles School of Fine Arts and Design, having to put her studies aside so her brother, Sherwood (Woody), could attend college.
She had aspired to become a fashion designer of women's clothing. She was a member of the Eastern Star,
the Pocahontas, Saint Mary's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church of Pacific Grove
and St. Timothy's Lutheran Church of Albuquerque
.
Ottilie was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Vivian Fries,
her brother, Sherwood Fries,
and her first husband, Harold Barlow.
Ottilie is survived by her husband, H. Bruce,
daughter, Natalie Barlow,
son, Christopher, daughter-in-law, Lynette,
step-daughters, Sonja (Ewer) Clark
and Sandra Ewer,
twelve grandchildren
and step-grandchildren,
18 great-grandchildren and great
step-grandchildren, three nephews and nieces,
two grandnephews
and nieces.
Her friends remember her as being helpful, talkative, generous, and loving. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services on Wyoming, 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NE, followed by interment of her ashes at the Sandia Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Zia Chapter (Albuquerque) or the American Diabetes Association.

Hi Phillis. I found the will of Christopher Ewer of Clarendon Park Wilts on the Wilstshire.gov.uk site yesterday. Made and proved 1680. If I remember correctly your EWER ancestery is stuck with Richard who married Joane Sparrow 1646. Now Richard's son Thomas had a daughter and named her Rachel, a pretty uncommon name. Christopher also named a daughter Rachel and was certainly living close by when he died. I think Christopher is most likely the son of Richard YOWER and c. 3 May 1621 at Highworth, he had an older brother Robert c.1618 at Highworth. Richard is the right age to have been a brother to Rob & Chris.
Nothing solid to rely on, just an uncommon name and close location. In his will Christopher asks to be buried near to his wife Mary recently? dec'd at West Grinstead (Sussex). Maybe co-incidence but at or around that time Steven Ewer was in court over a rent charge on land he held at East Grinstead. If not a co-incidence then there is a potential link for you with Stephen Ewer the attorney of Hatfield and Cheshunt (Stephen is even less common than Rachel in my records)who is directly descended from the Ewer family in the visitation in Herts. If true then you can put the Ewer arms up on your wall!!

You can see Thomas and Jane and their children on the IGI at familysearch.org if you search under Berkshire. I believe Edward married Mary Hicks at New Windsor 1819 and they had a son Edward, May 1820, who died the same year. Not sure what happened to Mary. Thomas is listed as a soldier in the p reg for the birth of his son Thomas in 1793. Thomas died at Clewer 1822 aged 52 giving a birth date of about 1770. Tom maybe the son of Joseph Ewer who married Susannah Bender 1768 New Windsor, they definitely had a son Joseph in 1771 at Windsor. Your Edward's brother Thomas has male descendants at least as far as the 1901 census. Can you fill me in on the Paramatta descent?

Are you sure Edward's father was also Edward, I thought the Ed who went to Paramatta was the son of Thomas & Jane Ewer born Clewer (nr Windsor, Berks) 1796 but that is assumption and not proven. Shrivenham is right across the other side of Berkshire.

Hi Matt

I found a Ewer in my family tree. This would be a Emma Sarah Ewer who married a Norris in 1860 in London (where alot of my tree is based). The reason why I mention Emma Ewer is that she was born in Windsor, Berkshire, her father was a Charles Ewer accorinding to Emma's marriage certificate. He was dead by 1860 anyway. I have yet to find him in any census reports, still looking.

But it may be possible that the Edward Ewer you mention being transported to Australia in 1822 might be a possible link to Charles and Emma? The name Ewer and Windsor being pointers to this. I too know little knowledge about this at the moment but still search.

regards

Ross

Hi Matt

Thanks for your message, it does contain some very interesting information. Especially that a Charles Ewer was married twice! First to Sarah Bunny (30 sep 1817) and then the 2nd marriage to Rachel Tallant (14 May 1834). Could Sarah Bunny have died, the family broke up, who knows?

It seems a possibility that the Emma Sarah Jane Ewer (her full name) that I mentioned could have links here - firstly, her second name being 'Sarah' could be because of Sarah Bunny? And when you mentioned that Charles Ewer baptised 1798 and son of Thomas and 'Jane' Ewer - Emma's third name is 'Jane'? I say this as, as you probably have discovered, it is common to pass on names or 'recycle' names in the family line. I've come across this often in other surname lines. Though it might of course be clutching at straws!

I have, I recall, seen that 1841 Census for Windsor that you put in your post. Where it lists Charles, Rachel, Fred and Caroline. The Emma that I mentioned was, according to her marriage certificate, 20 years old in 1860, so would have been around 1 year old in 1841. But of course there is no mention of her in this 1841 Census - one of those frustrating things we find in searching these records - where there seems a connection though nothing to 'prove' it other than a hunch, that requires more detective work.

The things we have going though are that 'Ewer' is quite an unusual name and the established links with Windsor, Berkshire.

I do indeed have the certificate of marriage for Emma Sarah Jane Ewer of 1860, though it does not contain any info on her mother (as is usual for marriage certificates at this time). It only mentions Charles Ewer as her father, and that he is 'deceased'. I will be pleased to scan it and send it in email for you if you like?

It seems possible there is a connection here with Emma, Charles and your Australian Edward Ewer (especially that they were bakers - another common trait is that siblings/sons/fathers often had same or similar occupations)

all the best and many thanks for that information.

Ross

Hello I know this message is an older one but I am hoping you are still out there looking. My husband comes from this line of Ewer. Mark Anthony Ewer also married Julia Wilcox and they have a son Archie Ewer who married married an Anna Van Houten, they have a son Clarence his son is James and so is my husband. Would love to talk with you as I'm at a stopping point unless I can travel to Genesee and
Allegen. If anyone would like to talk with me about this line I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Tricia Ewer

Hi,

Still some piecing together to do, and much has been done by a distant relation of mine. The essential facts are that he was convcited Berkshire Assizes 1820, arrived in Sydney on the Mary (2) in 1822. In 1825 he marred Ann EDWARDS, born in the colony in 1808, and they lived initially in Parramatta, thence to Bathurst NSW between 1839 and 1843 (based on birthplaces of children). He died in 1859 in Bathurst.

Regarding age, his death certificate of 1859 states he was 68 years of age, so born in 1791/2. Given that he outlived his life, it's probably not reliable.

However in the 1828 census of NSW his age is given as 28 (in two separate documents), making him born around 1800.

I'm still trying to work out a way to get his Berkshire Assize documents, when I do that will hopefully give a clue to his place of residence and/or parents.

I'll piece together the things you've stated above and see what I can put together.

cheers
matt

Hi Ross,

It'd be great to get a copy of the certificate: cispt2 at gmail dot com

I have a very nice person doing some Clewer and New Windsor searches for me shortly, with the intention of constructing/confirming aspects of the tree, so will let you know how it fits together, and of course will reciprocate with scans of anything relevant.

On the census and Emma, it seems to me that the only Emma Ewer born around 1842 was

Emma Ewer 1842 Apr-May-Jun St Luke Middlesex

though my British grography is terrible - is this the birth you estimate to be Emma's? It'd explain why she eludes the 1841 census.

cheers
matt

Hi Ross,

Looking at your message on Emma Sarah Ewer, I think there may be a relation. Do you have a scan/copy of the marriage certificate you could email to me? Does Emma's certificate give her mother's name?

One brother of Edward EWER (described in this discussion) was Charles EWER, baptised in Clewer, Berkshire, in 1798, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 3 August. Another family baptism gives Thomas' occupation as soldier.

The IGI index shows that Charles EWER married twice (I assume it was the same Charles):

Spouse: SARAH BUNNY Family
Marriage: 30 SEP 1817 Clewer, Berkshire, England

Spouse: RACHEL TALLANT Family
Marriage: 14 MAY 1834 Clewer, Berkshire, England

and this fits as the 1841 census for the borough of New Windsor, Berkshire, shows:

Parish of Clewer (Berkshire)
Charles Ewer, 40, Baker, born in county
Rachel Ewer, 30, not born in county
Fred Ewer, 15, born in county
Caroline Ewer, 18, born in county

Interestingly, my Edward EWER (Charles' brother) was also a baker in Australia.

Does anything here help make the connection?
cheers
matt

Hi thanks for your help, I've posted a summary of everything at my blog () and pasted it below fyi.

cheers,
matt

Edwards death certificate in 1859 (NSW Death Certificate 1859/002402) states that Edward was born in Windsor, England. This corresponds with his place of conviction, the Berkshire Assizes. While his place of birth was known by his son Edward, who was informant on his death certificate, the names of his parents was unknown.

A few posts of Ewer pages (ancestry.com.au in particular) revealed that Edward Ewer was, in fact, born in Clewer, Berkshire, in 1796.

Clewer was a small village and parish by Windsor in England. The Clewer indexes up to 1837 show that Edward's father was Thomas EWER, whose marriage is recorded on 27 April 1790. He was described as a bachelor 'of the parish'. Jane COMPTON, a spinster, was also "of this parish". They were married by banns. Witnesses to the marriage were Rosannah Aldridge and John Spencer. No baptism records exist in Clewer for either Thomas or Jane, but it's possible they are from a nearby parish.

This index also records the baptism of six children of the marriage from 1790 to 1800:
1790: William, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June
1792: Joseph, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June
1793: Thomas, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, a soldier, baptised 27 June
1796: Edward, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June
1798: Charles, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June
1800: Harriett ('over Charlotte'), son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June

(Note: I found a marriage for Harriett to George CLARKE on 7 Feb 1821 in Clewer, Berkshire on the Familysearch site).

That Thomas was a soldier could be a useful point of information with the UK Archives. My very first entry was on the question of the Ewer’s in Australia early on... there were quite a few Ewer people here. The direct link to that entry is:
http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/2007/10/ewers-in-coloni...

Three Ewer’s served in Australia in Regiments early on, and reading that Thomas was a soldier gelled with Thomas EWER of the 102nd Regiment (the Rum Corps) - he received pay as early as 1798 and returned to England in 1810. Given that Thomas and Jane had children in 1798 and 1800 it is probably not our Thomas.

There were also a William and Joseph EWER in Australia with the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1812 – the names fit and the time fits for William and Joseph, siblings of Edward, however 73rd was primarily Scottish, though did have English among its ranks. So my brilliant idea seems a little weak now. Ultimately I can check regimental records though being in America it’ll take a while!

Clewer burial records show that Thomas Ewer of Clewer Lane was buried on 22 March 1822, aged 52 and a Jane Ewer, of the same address, 10 June 1831, aged 63. The burial records give approximate birth years of 1770 for Thomas and 1768 for Jane.

In summary

1768 (abt): Jane Compton born England
1770 (abt): Thomas Ewer born Eng
27 Apr 1790: Thomas Ewer married Jane Compton by banns, at Clewer
1790: William, son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, baptised 27 June
1792: Joseph baptised 27 June at Clewer
1793: Thomas baptised 27 June at Clewer
1793: Thomas Ewer's occupation recorded as soldier
1796: Edward baptised 27 June at Clewer
1798: Charles baptised 27 June at Clewer
1800: Harriett ('over Charlotte') baptised 27 June at Clewer
1820: Edward convicted to life transportation on 28th February in Berkshire Assizes
1821: Harriett married to George CLARKE on 7 Feb in Clewer
1821: Edward Ewer departed for Australia on 28 Aug aboard Mary (2)
1822: Thomas Ewer (snr.) buried at Clewer on 22 March, aged 52
1822: Address for Thomas and Jane Ewer listed as Clewer Lane, Clewer
1831: Jane Ewer nee Compton buried at Clewer on 10 Jun, aged 63

Transported to Australia on the Mary (2) in 1822 (Berkshire Assizes), and subsequently married Ann EDWARDS.

I know little of the English EWER ancestry; Edward EWER was born in Windsor, Berkshire, son of another Edward EWER, born 1753 Shrivenham, Berkshire, but little else known.

I look forward to hearing any further info.

cheers
matt

Trevithick (they married in 1885 in Newtown, NSW).

They lived in the Bathurst and Wellington region in the late 1800's, but were living in Sydney by 1904.

Children that survived childhood:
Ella L Ewer? b. 1885
Ruby Amelia Ewer b. 1887 (my ggm)
Hilda Florence Ewer b.1890 Bathurst, d. 1972
Beatrice A Ewer b. 1891
Joseph C.
As an addendum, I see now the error of my ways.

The NSW BDM site has a search facility that is excellent, and gives name, year of incident, parents and location. Edward died in 1859 in NSW, and two entries are given:

2402/1859 EWER EDWARD AGE 68 YEARS DIED BATHURST

2467/1859 EWER EDWARD EDWARD CATHERINE BATHURST

I realise now that I used the Edward and Catherine names, but that Edward Ewer is in fact the grandson of Edward the convict. I'll order Edward the convict's death certificate, but the 'age 68 years' in the summary, and the fact his wife Ann Harriet EDWARDS predeceased him means there may be little information there.

cheers
matt

Actually I'm NOT sure of this, but I only discovered that I'm not sure last evening, so your message is timely.

Looking now at what I have, I have no documentation that states his parents name (all Australian-derived material), and I think a fellow researcher provided those names based on location, that being that Edward Ewer was convicted at the Berkshire Assizes, England on 20th Feb 1820.

I'd veyr much like to hear about Thomas and Jane, and their Edward, as it may well be the right fit!

I've written to the archives in the UK regarding the assize records, but have not heard back from them in some time. I hope that these will ultimately yield up a few more facts.

cheers
matt
