Thanks, Fred,

I've already searched microfilm 1569096 and didn't find the family. I even had a professional researcher double check it for me as I'm not very accomplished in the old German/Latin scripts. This person did locate the birth/christening record for Georg Friederich Faas and I'm still working on deciphering it and creating my "personal alphabet" by cutting & pasting the various letters as I determine what they are.

If you have any further suggestions, they will be most appreciated!

Beth

Beth,

The records for Reutlingen have been microfilmed by the LDS Family History Library and can be rented at your local LDS Family History Center or participating library. The LDS FHL catalog at FamilySearch shows there are 37 microfilms of information.
=========
Kirchenbuch, 1573-1882
Evangelische Kirche Reutlingen (OA. Reutlingen)
37 Mikrofilmrollen ; 35 mm.
Parish register of baptisms, marriages, deaths, confirmations, family register, etc. for Reutlingen, Württemberg, Germany. Left-side pages (l. S.) filmed separately from right-side pages (r. S.) Text in Latin and German.
=========

Only some of the baptisms of the children of Reutlingen have been indexed and show your family in the databases at FamilySearch. Apparently the marriages have not been indexed. That means your must rent the microfilm to get the information you need to continue researching further back.
I would suggest you start with the microfilm that contains the family registers (3 generations on one page). The various Faas families present in Reutlingen in the 1830 era should be on microfilm 1569096.

Faas Family of Reutlingen, Wuerttemberg

After many years of research, I have finally found my 2nd gr-grandfather John Caspar Faas's place of birth, parents, and siblings.

Parents were George Friederich Faas and Anna Maria Benz. All of their 15 children were born, christened, and many died in Reutlingen.

The four children who survived to adulthood are: Georg Friedrich Faas born 1828; Johann Kaspar Faas (my ancestor) born 1835; Stephan Faas born 1840; and, Bertha Faas born 1842.

Feel free to reply here or to my personal email: somehowCONNectd at accessky dot net.

Thanks!

Hi Lee,

I managed to take my 2nd gr-grandfather John Caspar Faas (born Johann Kaspar Faas) back one more generation to Reutlingen, Wuerttemberg. His parents were Georg Friederich Faas & Anna Maria Benz. Sadly, only 4 of the 15 children born to this family survived past the first few years of life.

John Caspar had an older brother, Georg Friedrich Faas, who was born 21 Feb 1828. But that is all the further I can positively follow him.

John Caspar Faas immigrated to Philadelphia in March 1856. The only surviving daughter of this family, Bertha Faas, apparently immigrated to Philadelphia via New York in 1870 and died at her brother John Caspar's home in Philadelphia in 1883. A cousin has a photo of Bertha and another woman who may be be their mother.

I have found several vital records for your ancestor and since his year of birth seems to fit in with my ancestor's family I've tried to keep an eye out for anyone researching this family.

I'm interested in comparing notes with you to see if I'm correct that your ancestor and mine are brothers.

Feel free to reply here or directly to my email: somehowCONNectd at accessky dot net.

Beth

I am a descendant of
Johann George,
his son James Schofer,
his son William Franklin Schofer....

My parents have the family chest in Bethlehem, PA. This is the chest that contains Johann George Schofer's military discharge papers from Germany, land deeds, documents, and German letters from our German relatives still living in Germany in the early 1930's.

My parents have hosted small groups of Schofers over the years, showing them the contents of the chest, taking them on a tour of the Schofer homestead and visiting various Schofer graves in the Reading/Quakertown area of Pennsylvania.

My parents don't have internet, but you can contact me through Facebook--Christine Schofer Gormley or by email christineschofer@hotmail.com

Lee,

The 1860 and 1870 censuses also show that family lived in Philadelphia and had several more children. There are also a number of baptismal records available for that family as indicated by the records at FamilySearch from St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran Church (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) (LDS Microfilm #1312260, Batch C725765 and Batch C004419).

I have merged the additional data into Timothy O'Neil's New.FamilySearch entry.
Re: Researching Faas Family

Lee,

The exact village is necessary to further your research. To find the exact village your FAAS/FAHS family came from will require research in the area where they lived. It is not uncommon for the village to be posted as a note on a baptism, wedding, or burial entry. Some have found it engraved into a headstone. I found mine in a local Who's Who.

In 1828 there was the Kingdom of Würtemberg and the Grand-duchy of Baden. Germany was formed in 1871. The German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is a modern (about 1950s) creation.

The 1880 census states the F. George Faas, a shoemaker, and family were living in Philadelphia. It states both F. George and Margaret were both born in Würtemberg. It indicates that Adolph Gustave (15) and Adam (13) were also born in Würtemberg.

A Timothy O'Neil tone94shadow@yahoo.com has entered data into New.FamilySearch on your FAAS family. The entry by Timothy disputes the birthplace of the two boys. In addition Timothy indicates there were two older sisters, Mary and Paulina, both born in Pennsylvania.
Researching Faas Family

I am trying to gather information to create a family tree and I have come to a stand still. My family has lived in NJ for generations and the furthest I can trace back to is F. George Faas (born around 1828 in Baden-Wurttemberg Germany) possibly married to Margaret (born around 1827 in Baden-Wurttemberg Germany). They had a son, Gustave Faas who was married to Emma Kunz (Kuntz). Their son, John Henry Faas was married to Therese Catherine McGuire. Their son, John Henry Faas II was married to Florence Porter. Their son, John Henry Faas III was my father. If anyone has any information they can provide, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Lee Faas

My 9-year old son was Googling our name and left your 2005 posting on the computer....very interesting. I have the Johan Georg Schofer Family History Centennial Edition 1832-1932 and would be happy to share any information from this book with you. Please advise with another posting if I can be of assistance. Rather than Christopher Henry, I show the name as Christof Heinrich, the 5th of 11 children of Johan Georg.

Family members are Louis, Lena, Freida (or Frida) and mother Magdalena (sp?) Have no info on father since it doesn't appear he came to US, possibly she was a widow.

I am a descendant of Johan George Schofer, through son Christopher Henry,g.son James Albert and ggrandson Robt. R. Christ. Henry, James Albert, and Robt. R. were the Schofers who had bakeries in Reading Pa. I have the family bibles of Christ. Henry and James Albert which contain family info. I also have a lot of old family photos, some of whichwere taken at Schofer family reunions in early and mid 20th century- most of the people in the photos are identified.I want to know if anyone knows what happened to the Schofer family archives? I had been told it resided with the Schofers of Topton Pa.- or that it was with the Schofers of the midwest. At one time, there existed a family tree done by a Schofer whose famly came over later, that went back further then our records- but our line showed up on this tree. Does anyone know what happened to it? I would like to hear from people doing Schofer research.

I wrote the letter re: Matilda Faas only. A letter TO ME mentioned Gebhardt. I have nothing on any of the surnames mentioned except Faas.

Sorry I can't help. You could try a Gebhardt forum or bulletin board..

I noted your genealopgy includes surname Gebhardt.
Seeking CONRAD GEBHARDT born about 1953, lived in Ludwigsburg/Stuttgart, Germany circa 1956 at Stuttgarterstraße US Army Apartments. his father's name is Davis Gebhardt, possibly a school teacher/principal. Conrad's mother's first name, I believe, started with an "M."
Please reply to CAROL andDOC181@cs.com
