Re: Fabel

My step-uncle Alfred lived, when I knew him as a child (me) in/near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was a wheat farmer; apparently, he later lost his fortune in post-retirement speculation. He was married to Mary ...; as far as I know, they did not have any children.

I knew my grandma (Caroline) as Grandma Beltman, not Caroline Fabel. At the time my parents married (see next paragraph), John Fabel was living in International Falls, MN, and apparently working as a fishing guide. According to my mother, he was essentially destitute, and he passed away shortly after 1933. I had always heard that, in Germany and maybe after he came to North America, he was trained and worked as a tailor. (I have a German pattern book of his, passed down from my mother.)

My mother was Marcella Fabel, married to Elmer Broman of Milaca, MN, in 1933. Her sister, Helen, was married to Milo POeterson, and they lived in Roseau, MN. She died sometime before my mother who passed away in 2003(?).

I am one of five Broman children: Robert, Kenneth, Charles, Joan Carrie (named after grandma Caroline), and Victoria.
My family of Febles originates in the US about 1800 as FAEBEL--they were Deutsch German from somewhere in Germany--exact location unknown. Some of the family changed the name to FEBLES, most of the family changed it to FABEL and the majority of the family lived in Monroe County, PA to the present time. Am aware of the French/Spanish line of current Febles citizens which seem to have emigrated in the 1900's. Thank you for your response. Good luck in your searches.

Dear Phillip and Deidre,
I found your inquiry very interesting. My grandfather, Richard Michael Fabel (born in Magdeburg) had a brother who sailed via ship to the U.S. Unfortunately no one ever heard from him again. My grandfather hired private investigators, but had no luck locating him. Could he have arrived in Africa instead?
I would like to connect more information with the both of you to see if we have common family heritage.

Sincere Regards,
Mona

Hi Deidre,

First of all, thankyou very much for responding. I thought at first you were my sister replying ... I was thinking, what the ?? ... then I read you were from South Africa, how interesting!

To answer your question, I am only a casual observer of ancestory as opposed to an active researcher. But there are people in the tree (from the German branch) who made contact with my mother several years ago and provided a detailed and well researched family tree. So it is good to see where other branches fit in.

I am interested that the South African Fabels are related. How many families are there and do you know when they started in South Africa and where they came from? .... I am guessing Holland.

Thanks again for responding Deidre,

Kind regards, Phil

I am from the Australian branch of the Fabel tree and it is quite an uncommon name here. I have a very detailed family tree somewhere showing the British then German heritage way back to 1690 odd if you are interested. Cheers, Phil

I have not done much searching but I am surprised to see how far the seed from Hessen has spread. Anyone wanting to email me on information pertaining to the Homburger Fabels please do so.
My husband's father had a sister Bertha and a brother Joseph. His great grandfather was Christopher Joseph Fabel and I have no record of his siblings.
It would be nice if there were a connection. I believe Joseph had a daughter Dorothy who never married.
Christopher Joseph settled in New York and had a hardware store there in the early 1900's.
Does any of this ring a bell with you?
Shirley Fabel

We have a 1883 Victorian home in St. Paul. I am doing genealogy research on the family who built it. The builder's daughter, Louise Krech, married Philip Fabel in 1860. They had three children, Philip, Jr., Henry and George. I am trying to bring the Fabel tree current to today. Any information you may have to share would be appreciated.

E-mail me privately and I will send you the .rtf file that I received from the archives in Petterweil, Germany where the Fabels came from. This has all of the family back to 1740.
In modern history, we are descended from Henry Fabel
(Philipps younger brother)and I have not researched Philipp's family. Both Philip and his father Conrad were shoemakers and continued in that trade after they came to St. Paul.
My Grandfather Grandmother, Christopher and Bertha Kast lived in New York City and retired to Peekskill in the 30's. His son Joseph lived in NYC and had one child, Dorothy. Christopher's daughter Bertha Fabel Conklin lived in NYC and also Connecticut and retired to Florida, probably in the late 50's. Bertha had a son and daughter, Curtis Florence. Curtis was a military man and may have retired to the east coast. I have no information on Florence. I hope there is some information here that is helpful to you. I have data on Christopher back to the 1650's should there be a connection. Good luck, Shirley Fabel

I am trying to locate information on Phillipp Carl Fabel who immigrated from Flonheim, Germany about 1854 to Philadelphia, PA. He had 4 minor children with him Margaretha (my great-grandmother),Christian b. 1844;Johann Martin b.1846;Barbara b 1847. Phillipp Carl's wife had died and he came to the US as he already had 3 siblings here. Barbara Fabel, b. 1836 who married George Conrad Scheid; Margaret, b.1822 who married Johann Jacob Scheid; and their brother, Philip (born Johann Philip)in 1825. The siblings lived in Lock Haven, PA. (now Clinton) and I think Philip ran a brewery located in Castanea, PA. I cannot find any information on my great grandfather Phillipp Carl, who I think was known as Carl Fabel. Would like to find information on him and his children. Margaretha married a Charles Roos and by 1870 they lived in NYC. Anyone with any information on this family, please e-mail me at Josephandlois@aol.com.

Am trying to locate information on my Fabel relatives that immigrated from Flonheim, Germany about 1854 and settled in PA, probably in the Philadelphia area. Phillipp arrived with 5 minor children after his wife died. He had siblings already here. My great grandmother, margarethe Fabel was Phillips oldest daughter. She was 10 1/2 when they came to the US. Phillip was a cooper and brewer in Germany. The three siblings in the US, married siblings in the Scheid family. Margaretha married Charles Roos and by 1870 they were living in NYC. Trying to fill in the period from 1854 to 1870. Margaretha's siblings were Christian, b. 1844;Johann martin, b 1846; and Barbara, b. 1847. Sound familiar to anyone?
