August Fagerstrom, from "Turku" (area?) of Finland
was a sailor, back and forth between Finland and Hull
England and perhaps Southampton, Eng.

At some point became an open ocean seaman, docking in USA
at least twice, abt. 1914 and 1916. Need to know what ship
he sailed on during this later period.

Desire contact with relatives in Finland, before that in
Sweden, want to build ancestry. I have the descendants here
in Ohio. August shortened his name to Fager when he was in
the 1929 Olympics, on USA team, that won a Silver medal for
cross country.

My father, Robert Benjamin, had a sister Marjorie, who married Alfred Fagerstrom in Ohio. The last time I saw them was in Dayton in 1967(?). Marjorie and Alfred had two sons, John and Jim, my first cousins whom I haven't seen since 1962(?). Am trying to find link to my father's father. Any relation here?

August Fagerstrom came here to Ashtabula Co., Ohio, to city of Ashtabula. There is no family knowledge of him having any relatives in the U.S.

I dont have the answer to your question but my grandfather was dudley p fagerstrom jr. His father was from sweeden maybe there is a connection. If so I would like to know what you might know and vise versa. This is my first attempt at my history, its quite fun.

Scot Fagerstrom, my son-in-law, his grandfather, August Fagerstrom, came over from Finland, BUT you see, Finland was ruled by Sweeden for many years. You will find that many cities (or most?) have two names, one Swedish and one Finnish. It is a whole different ballgame researching over there.
August Fagerstrom came to USA ca. 1914/6, stayed in NYC for a while. Eventually moved to Ohio. He said he was from Turku (Finnish)also called Abo (Sweedish)! Also, sometimes you see Turku with the word Pori before or after it (don't remember which way).
Fagerstrom name VERY rare. Anytime you find any reference to it, be sure to copy it down. Make sure you also make thorough note of the source. Go to your public library and check out several books on how to do genealogy/family history. You need to do it properly.
I have been doing it 30 years but only in the last several have I been working on this one. I've found material from the maternal side but not from the paternal (Fagerstrom) side. If you ever see any reference to an August Fager, please copy it for me. Scot's August

My great gandfather Isaac Fagerström was born in Hitis but settled in Vastanfjard. My Fagerström family is from a farm called Nybondas near the village of Hitis and in the Hitis Parish. Are our families related?

I don't know. All I have is from my son-in-law's grandfather August Fagerstrom who said his parents died (over there) and he went sailing. He said he was from "Turku" but we all know that if you live in a small town you give the name of a larger town so someone knows where you lived generally. I guess he never gave the name of his parents to anyone in the family. Maybe he ran away?
