hello, i am a descendant of the anton fahrer who came from sufflenheim, alsace, france to canada in 1843. he came with his family, including my great grandmother therese. i am currently looking for his parents. i believe his father's name was philip but he does not appear to have been born in sufflenheim. the alsace families settled in mary hill, ontario, very close to guelph and there is a genealogy centre in mary hill that has some very interesting information. i imagine our anton fahrers are in some way connected. please reply and let me know how your research is going.

regards
debi

I have just read the info about the Fahrers from Bucharest, Romania.
My father Alexander Fahrer was the son of Herman and Toba Fahrer
from Bucharest. I recall hearing that my grandfather was a tailor/coatmaker whose work was somehow connected to the "royal palace". They were Jewish and came to Philadelphia, Pa in the early 1900's. I would love to read any information you have found about Fahrer ancestors going back as far as possible, and especially those who are Jewish and/ or from Romania. I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Kristi,

I too am looking for Fahrer relatives. My ancestor-Anton Fahrer-I think was originally from Germany and was born around 1820. He was a Catholic priest in Germany, and fled to this country because of "religious" persectuion. He sent for his "girlfriend" several months later. He married Johanne Christine Kiessig, and I know that she sailed from Bremen in 1853 (we have her passport). The family cemetery is on our land in Evansville, Indiana, and I have been looking for quite some time for information on his relatives.

Also, there was an Anton Fahrer somewhere in Canada, although it's not the same one. I do know that there are several Fahrers in new York and in Florida. I know I'm related to the Florida bunch, but I've never been able to trace a connection to the others.

Well, I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you need any more information, or if you have any to share.

God Bless,

laura Symon

Nick,

Sorry for not replying sooner. I just returned from what my son describes as "Mitch's Terrorist Trip".... Actually a business trip which coincidentally took me to Washington, D.C. and lower Manhattan, right past both attack sites. I am originally from Brooklyn, NY but spent most of my life living in suburban New Jersey. About 4 years ago I relocated to North Carolina.

Neither Melanie or Marius are Fahrer's I have heard mentioned before. Can I assume that from the route that your father's cousin followed (through Israel) that your roots are Jewish? If so, your family would be the first group of Fahrer's I have encountered (other than my own family) that is. Most of the other Fahrer's I have come across reside in Germany and I have yet to be able to find a link there.

Mitch
Hi Mitch,
thanks for your reply. Where abouts are you writing from. Other information: My paternal grandmother was called Melanie Fahrer, my father's first cousin is Marius Fahrer. He is a world renowned orthopaedic surgeon and emigrated to Australia from Romania via Israel in the early 1960s.

There was a cousin in Germany (Rodica ....?) who lived in Frankfurst I think. The cousins in NY have a different name.

Is this any help?

Nick

Fahrers in Australia

The Fahrers originally came to Australia in 1947. Our branch came from Bucharest Romania. My father, Julien Fahrer, held a Polish passport but the borders kept changing in that part of Europe. His cousin went to Long Island, NY and some went to Israel. I thin kthe family name was changed to Fahrer about 120 years ago.

Our roots

Yes, I do imagine our family was kicked out during the Spanish Inquisition as well. Most of our family still resides in the New York metropolitan area (Long Island) and New Jersey.

My father's name is Leonard. His older brother is Seymour. They are the sons of Charles and Rey Fahrer. My grandfather had siblings, but I was fairly young when they passed away. I'll try to dig up some information and post it. Hopefully by doing so I can find a link from our family to others.

Mitch Fahrer
6208 Oak Forest Court
Summerfield, NC 27358

Some interesting history

Before my grandfather passed away some years ago he advised us that our name was not originally Fahrer, and the we were not always of Germanic origin. Apparently, our ancestors left an area in southern Spain (now Portugal) in the late 1400's or early 1500 I believe, called Faro. Our original family name was DeFaro, or De Faro.

This all came as quite a surprise to our family, needless to say. My dad (who is in his 70's himself had always heard that the family was from Germany and eastern Europe.

If by chance you have any information about any Fahrer's that eminated from the town of Faro or of the derivation of Fahrer from Faro, I would appreciate it. Fahrer of course means traveler, so it is very likely that someone leaving their homeland for another would want to take up a name that sounded somewhat like their former name, but one that would make them fit in better. What better name than Fahrer?
