Many Failing families were Palatines from the Mohawk Valleyin New York. A very good lineage book is available which will save hundreds of hours of work, if infact your tree sprouted here. It's entitled " The 18th Century Failing Family of the Mohawk Valley" by David Kendall Martin. It's about $15. Zimmerman-Timmerman reunion, Little Falls, New York

I have a faded, fragile, handwritten booklet that names this couple on it's first page, with a daughter Fern F. born 1885. The booklet has about a hundred other related names with dates from 1846-1902. I am not related to these people, but I am willing to transcribe the booklet and post it to a website or as an attachment to a message here, or email to interested researchers. Which would be best, or all? Help?

Failing too but I am not sure of his ancestry.
My Hugh was the son of John A. and Jane Owen Failing of Jordan, NY. He was named for his grandfather Hugh Owen who died in 1841 in Alloway, NY. John was the son of Andrew and Susannah Roof Failing.
There is a genealogy on the Failing Family of the Mohawk valley.

FAILING / FEHLING from the Palatinate area of Prussia

Dear William,
From what I can gather, the Failing name was Fehling Germany. It was never changed in Ellis Island. The family never came thru Ellis Island, they were here long before.
They did come from the Palatine region of Prussia, There was a Count Von Weymer in the family, as Weymer is used as a first name in the family. They settled in the Mohawk Valley section of New York, near Albany. Some were well known
Doctors, and farmers. Perhaps dairyfamers. There was a migration to the mid west for better less expensive farm land.
There was a Joshua Failing that came down from Montgomery County New York to New York CIty, to be the Head of Dreying. Dreying is now known as trucking. He was head of it for all New York City, controlling the markets.

Stephaie
I was very glad to get your message today! I am just starting my family search so I don't know alot of details. My father was Henry Anthony Failing Jr., son Henry Anthony Failing Sr., son of James Ellison Failing and Florence Anthony Failing. What I do know is what my mother told me. James was from Tenn. (I believe Ball Camp, Knox County.) I think he studied medicine for a while (I have a medical book of his) but worked for the railroad which brought him to Richmond. James and his wife are buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. I have photos of their markers. I am from Richmond Va but live in Southern Md now. I am most anxious to learn more and have lots of questions. My e-mail is e_magorian@hotmail.com
Thanks!!

The Josiah I believe you are named for, was born in upstate NY, The Mowhawk Valley area where most of the Failings lived after they came from Germany. He moved to NYC married Henrietta Ellison, and had a family there. When his sons were grown, he and his adult children went to Portland. I seems son Henry
worked in lower Manhattan for an importer and had a great capacity for the business. Henry was the reason behind the move.

Henrietta Ellison was raised by her grandparents, as her father had died shortly after her birth. Her grandparents names was Van Der Beek, the first Van Der Beek came to Ny with the New Amsterdam Company in 1640, his name was Paulus Van der Beek and he owned a large farm in what is now Flatbush Brooklyn. The name means by the Brook in Dutch. There was a famous Rev War Hero in the Van der Beeks. I think his name might have been Nathanial.

Steffy

FAILING - surname variant spellings

Was Fehling changed to Failing in the U.S.(@Ellis island) or to hide German ancestry. Did any of the Failing of New York move to Illinois? In about 1850 or later. Trying to confirm the origin of Failing from Fehling. The Fehling name is German, from the region called Palatine or Prussia; there is a town in New York I think called Palatine where a Johann Fehling resided very early, 1700's. It appears a migration from Palatine during 1750's during that period.
