I am also looking for info on Hezekiah. His daughter, Nancy (b 1778) was married to Joseph Crouch (1774-1856). Their son, Elias (1837-1908) was my husband's great grandfather.

According to info I found, Hezekiah was a loyalist; however, he and his brother John worked for George Washington.

She had a brother named Jacque (could have changed his name from Jack) Fairfax and a sister Frieda. Jacque Fairfax was my grandfather and they all were from and lived in Belmar, NJ. I am looking to trace my roots back as far possible. So if you have any information it would be greatly appreciated.

FYI

Catherine Zimmermann-Mulgrave, the third person from the left, was a survivor of a slave voyage from Africa. She sailed in the slave vessel "Heroina". In 1833, the "Heroina" embarked slaves in Angola, on the West-Central African coast, and set sail to Cuba, but wrecked off the coast of Jamaica. She escaped from the wreck, along with other slaves, and received the western name of Catherine Mulgrave after the Governor of Jamaica at the time, the Earl of Mulgrave. The image shows a picture of the Zimmermann-Mulgrave family made in an unknown studio. Catherine married Mr. Johannes Zimmermann in 1851, after divorcing Mr. Georg Peter Thompson, in 1849, with whom she had two children, Rosie and Georg Thompson. Copies of this image picture is held by the archives of mission 21, Basel, Switzerland, and by the archives of the city of Gerlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Year: 1873

Winifred Emile Fairfax

Hello, i have started to research my great grandmothers side of the family and i really need some help. My g.g.grandmother was WINIFRED EMILE FAIRFAX prior to marrying my g.g.grandfather CLARENCE BISS. Winfred then went on to have four children BARBARA MAE BISS, GRENVILLE WEBSTER FAIRFAX BISS, PAULINE BISS and MICHAEL CLIVE BISS. I have no other information on winifred and would be really greatful if anyone thinks they have her in their tree or has some useful information for me as i have no starting point. She lived in the LONDON area, however she was POSSIBLY born in France. She was known as WIN, even to my grandmother who was her grandaughter!

Sue,
There is no certainty as to the father of John. Some have him as Thomas based on the fact that there was a Thomas in MD. However, there is no proof right now. This line of Fairfaxes was Catholic and that points them to the Catholic side of the family which is the Viscounts of Emley side.
Regards,
Christina

I am attaching the only source I know for this pedigree which comes from the book: Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families. I fear it must be taken w/ a grain of salt.
It is extremely hard to make any sense of this pedigree which has to be viewed as a 2nd hand source. I also have the Fairfax Pedigree wall chart from the Fairfax Soc. I have looked at this bef. to try and figure it out and just looked again.
The only way I can follow which agrees partially is:
Sir Thomas m. Ellen Aske
s/ Henry m. Mary Cholmley
s/ Henry m. Frances Barwick
It ends here bec. they had no son John. And of course Henry did not come to VA and MD.
They did have a son Henry b. at Bolton Percy whose son William was the Col Wm Fairfax who founded the VA Fairfax line. No son John who lived past infancy for this family.
This Bolton family is also not the Catholic family and the MD family was Catholic.
I fear this lineage without any first hand evidence to support it is pretty doubtful.
Regards,
Christina

Re: What became of Lord Fairfax's land? When?

After 10 Oct 1779 grants were issued by the Virginia state government and executed by the governor. Lord Fairfax first issued a land patent in Fairfax County in 1661 to Robert TURNEY. The last patent was issued in 1679 to Wm. DUDLEY. The sale or lease of land is how they became rich as the land was given to them by the crown of England and handed down in the families when a Lord died. A grant had to be cultivated and a house built within three years of the date of the grant to become seated. Many land that were not seated were returned to the proprietors.
Re: Calvert / Fairfax connection

Will:
Thanks for writing back. My memory is sketchy about all this from my grandmother(james and nadine colvert's daughter). I do recall on a trip to Warrenton, VA, my parents trying to find info on Asa, and before. Somehow I seem to remember that someone said Asa ran away to sea at a young age, but I may be mistaken. The illegitimate question came up in my brother's research in the late 70's, but he has passed away, and I believe the info with him. I don't know if Asa was the issue, or his parents or grandparents.
The pictures of the Colvert side I remember were several, and were studio photos, I forgort to indicate; my brother had them and his house burned, and I didn't ever get around to asking my sister if they were ever recovered from the fire.
I do remember a picture also of, I seem to believe of W.L. among Grandmother's things, and he was quite elderly, and incidentally had a cane/walking stick in the portrait! Oh, my, I hope they survived!

I will let you know sometime in the next few days. Also, I may be making an email change, so an alternate email is: autogirl2911@yahoo.com

Regards, cousin,
Janie Conner (48)
Bookeeper in Northeast Arkansas

Thank you so much! I'm doing a mental head slap here; I'm thinking my sister has the family bible of the Colverts, since she mentioned it last time we talked, and said that she intended it to go to her oldest grandson, who has Colvert as his middle name. I'll give her a call this weekend. Maybe there may be some info there. Also is there a true connection between us and Lord Baltimore? I believe I read something in my g'mother's research of about 35 years ago about the 4th Lord Baltimore, albiet through an illegitimate liason(???) Explains why she dropped the whole project!! Also we had in our family actual studio portraits of Asa and Sarah, hope my sister still has them. They are a scream, they look very stiff and bewildered....I'll let you know what I find out.

Hi Janie,
I have complete family history from ASA to present. ASA was the one who changed the name from 'a' to 'o' in 1838 when he arrived in missouri. The change was because he was getting to much mail of unrelated Calverts and there were many in MO. James Asa, is buried in Selby County - if my memory serves me correctly. Right now I'm looking at Robert Calvert of Charles County MD and Charity Gray as somehow connected to ASA. ASA's oldest son, who shared deeded property with in MO was named John ROBERT. Fairfax was in family records as his mother, but it also states ASA had a step-mother. Your connection is listed in our records. I also descend from Washington Lanty through John Waddy and have WL's cane. ASA also had an older brother named Lanty Calvert. Lanty lists ASA was heir in his will.
My biggest problem is connecting FAIRFAX. My DNA shows a connection with WEST/FAIRFAX - probably the Henrietta Fairfax line.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me anytime - cousin. I live in Cody Wyoming.

William Waddy Colvert

Please, if you do have any information on Asa Colvert's parents, please let me know. I have been looking for this Colvert/Calvert link, and I believe you have some of the pieces.

Re: Calvert / Fairfax connection

Asa Colvert, born in 1775 was married to Sarah Hudson (not Fairfax, if we are researching the same ancestor) He was born in MD and died in 1861 in Marion County, MO. They had several children, among them, Washing Lanty Colvert, who is my direct ancestory on my father's side. I am looking for the ancestor who changed the family name from Calvert to Colvert, and I believe it may have been Asa. You can check this info on the family tree data bases, With James Colvert as W L Colvert's son married to Nadine Feagan, my great-grandparents. If you turn anything up, please let me know, Thanks
