Sometime back I had an e mail from a Fairlie in South America (Chile?) who was related to the Fairlie of locomotive fame . Unfortunately, I am no longer in possession of it. I do believe that I did put him in touch with another relative of the locomotive Fairlie in New Zealand. I can only suggest that you try putting something like "Fairlie Locomotive South America " in Google and seeing what comes out (you may of course already tried this). Sorry I could not be of more help.

Alan Fairlie (arfairlie@ntlworld.com)

Hi Jean
I am still here and am always fascinated with the Fairlies.
Your questions.
1. Is Enrique = Henry? I have assumed so.
I don't think Henry Wilson Fairlie was in England at the time of the 1881 English census so it improves the chances that he is in Chile before the birth of Marie Mercedes Fairlie in 1882 and that Marie is his daughter. But there is nothing to prove it unless you have some birth registration details.
I will check the fiche records of Births/deaths/marriages of British Nationals in foreign countries and see if he is listed.
2. The Chilean Fairlies ( assuming that they are descendants of Enrique/Henry) are not related to Robert Fairlie [Railway Engine designer].
3. I am not a Fairlie. My interest in the family is as support for a friend whose mysterious family may be related to Robert Francis Fairlie. If you would like a contact for the Peruvian Fairlies please email direct. (Google on my name and Fairlie and you should find my email address or you could join the Yahoo Group for Fairlie.) Best wishes Claire
Claire:

I know this is a pretty old post but you seem to have a lot of info on the Fairlies that ended up in south america. I'm pretty sure I'm related to Richard (probably my dad's cousin), since my family is from Chile, also my Grandfather's dad was Juan Fairlie Lillo (I'm guessing the son of Enrique and Gabina).
So is this Enrique Fairlie actually Henry W. Fairlie from England? The funny thing is that this is my dad's name.
Unfortunately my grandfather died a few years ago so I can't ask him but my grandmother is still alive, I'll give her a call...

Also, are these Chilean Fairlies related to Robert Francis Fairlie at all? and are you a Fairlie too?

I hope u get his message,

Thanks a lot,

Jean

Hi Richard

I have picked up your enquiries on Rootsweb about your Fairlie family descended from English and scottish families.
I am currently helping a Peruvian family of Robert FAIRLIE who came out to Peru in the 1880s-1890s. One brother Frank also went to Chile but seems to have raised his family in England. I don't think he is related to your family. Another brother John went to South America but he was born in 1865.
I am not sure if he stayed in Chile or went to New York.

There is only one reference on the IGI that seems to refer to your family: Maria Mercedes Fairlie christened 11 Mar 1882 San Miguel Los Angeles, V111 Region Chile. father Enrique Fairlie and mother Gabina Lillo. This will be your grandfather Henry Wilson Fairlie. If you can tell me more about your family I can look in the English census records for 1871, 1881 and 1891 for information on Henry Wilson's family.Claire in
New Zealand
Richard. I have checked the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 , 1901 census records for you. John M Fairlie born about 1831 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England and married Jane born about 1829 in Wigton Cumberland, England. They had 3 sons that lived. (there may have been more children who could have died between these census records). Henry Wilson Fairlie was born about 1859 in Carlisle, Cumberland. He may have been named after a boarder living in the house who was Edward M Wilson born about 1847 in Brazil.

William Jordan Fairlie was born about 1861 and married Florence and had one son Dorian M Fairlie born about 1891. William Jordan Fairlie became a Doctor and was a registered mediacl practioner in 1891. Thw other brother was Hugh M Fairlie born about 1865 in Carlisle, Cumberland. He became a Clergyman in the Church of England and did not marry.

John fairlie was a cotton manufacturer's clerk in 1861 and 1871 and a chemical manure manufacturer in 1881.The family lived in 14 henry St Rickergate from 1881 - 1901. John Fairlie had earlier lived in in Rickergate.

I have copies of the census records for you if you write to my email address when you finally read this mesage.

I found a marriage record for the above on Familysearch.com in 1869 in Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

I am trying so hard to find info on "my" Janet Garroway who married an Andrew Young probably in the same area because their daughter, Elizabeth Young, married a John Cooper in 1859 at St James Street in Calton with the rites of the Church of Scotland.
The record also says Elizabeth lived at 13 Churley St, Calton. Her father was Andrew Young a Weaver and her Mother's maiden name was Garroway. The witnesses were James Barclay and Margaret Cooper (am assuming she was Johns sister).

Maybe Janet and Elizabeth were sisters? Or Cousins?

Would love to hear from anyone with info on this family

Thanks,
Karen
Glendora, CA

Elizabeth FERLIE/FAIRLEY - b.abt 1815 Larbert, Stirling, Scotland

I am seeking information about Elizabeth FERLIE who married Robert SUTHERLAND on 2 Jun 1839 at Larbert, Stirling, Scotland.

According to the 1851 Census in Stenhousemuir, Larbert, she was born in Larbert and was 36 years - which would mean she was born around 1815. The only record I have found so far that 'sort of' matches is:

Elizabeth FAIRLEY: christened/born 23 Nov 1813 in Larbert, Stirling, Scotland.
Daughter of James FAIRLEY and Isobell RUSSELL (they married “abt 1808”)
Siblings:
Helen: christened 24 Feb 1808 Helen: christened 24 May 1809
William: born 24 Feb 1810
Margt.: christened 22 Sep 1811
Mary: born 18 Sep 1811, christened 22 Sep 1811
(all of the above at Larbert, Stirling, Scotland)

Do any of the above link with anyone's Fairlie/Fairley/Ferlie families?

Yes there is a ship building town in
Scotland. There was a railroad designed and I think owned by my great great grandfather there too. My father is Henry Fairlie, his father Robert who was an only child came to the US after being raised in Malaysia for some time. His father was John Simpson Fairlie and his Father another Robert Fairlie, an eminent engineer according to a reference letter written by the sheriff of London at the time.

There is also a Fairlie Golf club in New Zealand.

Thanks for the contact. Are you a Fairlie or Hart connection ?
Mary Fairlie who married Thomas Hart in 1876 in Balfron was my greatgrandmother. I have been researching both sides of the family and am keen to find as much info as possible. Nan Hart died in 1964 and I never got to meet her, but my mother corresponded regularly with her. I would love to hear more from you.
Thanks, Coline.
I am wondering if anyone has any information on Fairlie families from the areas of Balfron,Kippen, Killearn, or Drymen, etc. My Great Grandmother was Mary Fairlie of Balfron, b.1856. She married Thomas Hart in 1876. Mary was the daughter of Walter Fairlie and Mary Stewart. I have established a direct link to a William Fairlie who married Elizabeth Blair in Balfron in 1745. Through this process I have aquired a lot of names and am now trying to connect the various families. There certainly were a lot of them.! I am more than happy to share information if anyone would like to contact me.
