From the files of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center:

Historical Hand-Atlas, History of Ottawa County, Ohio, 1881, p. 195

JEHIAL GILSON -- son of Jeremiah and Polly Gilson, was born in Jefferson county, New York, March 16, 1818. His mother died February 18, 1867, and his father September 18, 1871. They settled in this county in 1851, and Mr. Gilson in 1858. His wife, Amy, whose father, Henry Fall, died in February, 1828, and her mother, Amy Bailey, in April, 1877, was born in Jefferson county, New York, September 10, 1822. They were married in Watertown, in that county, March 21, 1846, and have had eight children: Mary F., born December 31, 1847, died June 2, 1849; George F., born July 2, 1849; R. V., May 9, 1851; Sarah B., January 22, 1853; Celley, May 6, 1856, died March 17, 1857; Hiram, December 18, 1857, died March 17, 1858; Amy L., March 6, 1859; Charles W., April 6, 1861. He served three years as supervisor in Harris township. Occupation, farming. Postoffice, Martin.

Correction re Amy BAILEY Fall

I have received a copy of the Jehail GILSON article in the 1881 Historical Hand-Atlas, History of Ottawa Co., Ohio. Contrary to the indexing of this record in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, the actual article does not indicate where Amy BAILEY Fall died, whether NY, OH or elsewhere: the article simply states that GILSON's father-in-law, Henry [Hatevil] FALL [Jr.], died in Feb 1828 and his mother-in-law,Amy BAILEY [Fall], died in Apr 1877.

More on Henry Hatevil Fall, Jr.

Your source showed four women purported to be daughters of Henry Hatevil FALL, Jr., but three of the four were daughters of Henry Hatevil FALL, Sr., not Jr., namely, Hannah, Abigail "Abby," and Elizabeth. Of those listed only Lovina FALL was a daughter of Henry Hatevil FALL, Jr.

Lovina's mother, Amy BAILEY Fall, was enumerated in the household of Henry WOODWORTH in the 1870 Jefferson Co. (Rutland), NY census.

Re: Henry Hatevil FALL, Jr.

The second half of the following statement seems to be in error: "Henry Hatevil Fall is brined [buried] in the village cemetery in the village of Brownville. His wife is probably buried there but has no headstone."

Henry Hatevil FALL, Jr. is reported to have died in 1831 and to have been buried in or near Brownville, Jefferson Co., NY. His widow, Amy BAILEY Fall, remained in Jefferson Co. for some years and was enumerated there in the 1850 through 1870 censuses.

Amy appears, however, to have removed from Jefferson Co., NY to Ottawa Co., OH after the time of the 1870 census and to have died in Ottawa Co. in Apr 1877, according to her son-in-law, Jehial GILSON, who was married to Henry and Amy's daughter, Amy FALL. The GILSONs had been in Ottawa Co. at least from the time of the 1860 census.

I have today ordered a copy of the entry on Jehail GILSON and his family, including his mother-in-law, Amy BAILEY Fall, that appeared in a 19th century publication, Ottawa Co. [OH] Atlas; this was ordered from the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, which houses an extensive index to and compilation of OH obits among other material.

Jo,I am married to a member of the Ora Alva "Owen" Fall clan. My husband is a part of the second family with Nina A Jewel/Fall/?/Carlson. Nina died in 1937/38 and is buried in the Morris Hill Cemetery in Bosie, Idaho. My husbands father was Glen Edmond who died in 1975? in Fairbury, NE. He was married to Alice and they had four children together. All are still living. Melvin A. Fall died in Spokan WA in July of 1961 of some form of cancer. Melvin was married breifly, but was divorced shortly before his death.
On one of the Fall family trees that I found here, someone listed a Joel Peppins Fall as the father of Ora Alva. I do not know how accurate that info is, as I have found some serious errors in other parts of their tree.

Fall of Scotland to Virginia

Faa also known under the surnames of Faw and Fall, were
Scottish Romany Gypsies who were forcefully transported to the Virginia plantations in 1715 as convicts.

In the Book, Scottish Gypsies
http://www.archive.org/stream/scottishgypsiesu00macr#page/n3...

They clearly speaks of the Faa / Faw / Fall Gypsy family all through out the book, some of which were transported to Virginia, and likely transported to South Carolina as well.
They are one of Scotland's most well known of the Gypsy families, and are a family of great interest to me.

If your Faw, Fall, Faa family traces back to Colonial Virginia or South Carolina, I would be most interested in talking to you about your family tree possibly being of Romany Gypsy ancestry.

Please contact me directly
lockeroots@comcast.net
I haven't been on Ancestry for about a month and just found your message. My husband's grandfather was Frederick Fall; son of James Fall & Fanny Sheens. I know from the censuses that Fanny had two aunts who made hats. Other than that I know very little about the Sheens. When Fanny died she was still called Sheens but the censuses refer to her as Fanny Fall.

The mystery around Matthew Fall and James fall remains just that, a mystery. Because Matthew was born before birth certificates I have no way of knowing if he was given a middle name (possibly James). I have found no death of Matthew and he disappeared off the censuses; at that time James appeared. I will see if I have any info on the Sheens family. Meanwhile I would love it if you could give the info you have on the Sheens

Hi Heather:

The original of this 3 Generations of the Henry H. FALL family was received by us (myself and two other HINES family researchers) in 2000 from Barb CASE, who was living in Rochester, NY at that time. It appears that Barb must have been related to the WITT line through Eleanor FALL. We do not know for sure, but Barb has disappeared from the Internet scene, so may have died.

Barb's information was wonderful to receive but there were a few errors regarding Hatevil's wife. She was definitely Sarah DUNHAM, with information backing that up in Hatevil's Civil War Pension and Military Service papers which I ordered from the US archives.

Because this email system is only in black and white, except where I put "Tom's note" you will not be able to differentiate between the original information that I received from Barb Case and the information that I have added since 2000.

The info shown here about Hatevil's son Isaac and Isaac's son Caliston was just added by me after I did some searching at ancestry.com and other sites after reading your query. Caliston was a twin, with his sister named Calista.

From an inquiry posted by someone else on another site, there was some history passed down that the FALL family had Native American ancestry. I have not found any such ancestry, but it is always possible.

However, the info passed down might have been embellished over the years, as Isaac and his family moved to Ohio from Jefferson County, New York (upper New York State near Watertown) circa 1840 (Hamden, Geauga County, Ohio which I think is Cleveland area). Soon after, the family was living in Sandusky County,Ohio but in 1850 there is no trace of Isaac, so he likely died between 1842 and 1850.

What is significant about the family's Sandusky County location is that in the very late 1830's and very early 1840's, the US government moved the Wyandot Indians and other tribes from Sandusky County, Ohio to Kansas. I am familiar with that move as last summer I happened to be researching another ancestral line of Mohawk Indians who had sided with the British in the American Revolution, then moved into Ontario (Canada) after the Revolution, and then a small group of them moved to a Wyandot reservation (becoming adopted into the Wyandots) near Detroit and then to Sandusky County, Ohio and then to points west.

What likely happened, is that Isaac FALL managed to be assigned a piece of land on the former Wyandot reserve in Sandusky County shortly after the Wyandots were moved out, and thereby the Native connection got garbled in later generations into "Native ancestry" as the info got changed as it passed down by word of mouth.

Anyway, I will post here the background info that I have on the amazingly named Hatevil Henry FALL (who generally did go by Hatevil in his Pension papers), his wife Sarah DUNHAM and their known children.

I am related to Hatevil's son James, about whom Barb CASE did not have any information.

I will not post all of my FALL family info here, but the info on Hatevil and his son Isaac is about all that I have. Both Henry and his wife Sarah must have had excellent genes as they both lived to age 90+ which was an amazing feat back in the early 1800s. No idea who Hatevil parents were or when his ancestors moved to British North America (as it was before the Revolution), nor where they were from - eg. could be England or Ireland, or even Germany but assuming a name change in spelling such a PFALL

- - - - - - - - --

1 Henry Hatevil FALL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth:	1753, Damariscotta, Lincoln Co, ME1
Death:	19 Jul 1845, Hounsfield, Jefferson Co, NY, age: 922
Burial:	Brownville Cemetery, Brownville, NY3, See Henry FALL Jr

Pension records are the primary source of information.2 Three places of enlistment were given for Henry: Damariscotta, ME; Bristol, ME; and Boston, MA. Take your pick. His birth has not been found yet.

In Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution4, pp.483-484 there is a listing of thirteen assignments (listings) for Hatevil FALL dated from 7 Oct 1775 to Sept 1778. No battles are mentioned. However, rank, company and regiment are given in each listing along with where the company was mustered. From October 1775 through February 1777 he served under Captains Bowne, Swan, Hilton, Hodsdon, Brigham, and Sumner. In February 1777 he joined Capt Samuel Fosters company, Col. Greatons regiment, in which he was listed as Sergeant and reported on command at Canterhook. (In the pension record it states guarded public stores at Kinderhoook, NY.2, Query Summary) 20 Jul 1778, Lieut James Tisdale is in command of (late) Capt Fosters company. 1 Aug 1778, reported reduced to Private. An earlier entry for pay accounts for 1 Jan 1777 to 22 Dec 1778 includes reported deserted.

Tom’s Note:
In Henry H. FALL’s Revolutionary War Pension Papers, it was also mentioned that Henry had served for a while in a fleet of gunboats on Lake Champlain in NY State under the command of Brigadier General Benedict Arnold, and that Henry was on a boat that was sunk. Perhaps this was the Gunboat ‘Spitfire’ which was recently raised from the bottom of Lake Champlain!!!?
http://www.lcmm.org/site/mri/mri_arch_projects/gunboat_spitf...

According to his pension papers, Henry also took part in a failed American Rebel campaign that was intended to raid Quebec City.

In Childs Gazetteer (Brownville, bio for Anson Potter of Hounsfield) are the following notes: he (Potter) made the acquaintance of Miss Abby M. Fall, whom he married September 26, 1826. Her father, Henry T. Fall, [Note: should read Henry H.] was an officer in the Revolutionary army and served during the war; soon after peace was declared he settled in Litchfield County where Mrs. Potter was born, April 11, 1802. In 1811, meeting with some reverses in business, he emigrated to the town of Rodman.5, Pt.1, pp 303-304, Brownville

Burial is also not clear. See notes for son, Henry.

Census: 1790 Census: Kinderhook, Columbus Co., NY. Fall, Henry
In the household were: 1 male over age 16; 2 males under age 16; and 4 females

Census: 1800 Census: Herkimer County, New York, p.421; Fall, Henry
Henry is over 45, his wife was between 26-45; They had two boys age 10-16, 1 boy under 10 and 5 girls under 10.

1810 Census: Lewis County, New York, p.113 Fall, Henry
Henry and his wife were over age 45, with 4 girls between ages 10 and 16, and 1 boy and 1 girl under 10

1820 Census: Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York, p.136/405 Fall, Henry
In the household are: 1 male and 1 female over 45; 1 male (16-18) and 2 females (16-26)

1825 Census: Hounsfield,	p.5; Fall, Henry H.
Household contains 1 male (voter) and 3 females: 2 females unmarried (16-45) and 1 presumed over 45.
He farmed 18 acres and had 2 cattle, 2 horses, 22 sheep and 2 hogs. The family produced 20 yds fulled cloth.

1830 Census:

1840 Census: Ellisburg,	p 29,	Fall, Henry H.
Household consists of one very old woman (80-90) and one very old man (90-100).

Spouse:	Sarah DURHAM
Birth:	1757, Kinderhook, Columbia Co, NY1
Death:	17 May 1848, Brownville, Jefferson Co, NY, age: 916
Death Memo:	Died of old age at 88yrs
Father:	James DURHAM
Mother:	Eleanor PATTERSON

Every one of the DAR applications from Jefferson county says that Henry married Sarah BRACE. But the pension application and records of the Dutch Reformed Church in Claverack, NY, clearly state that her name was Sarah DURHAM.

Sarah may have been the daughter of Silas Durham who appears in the 1790 census.

The only children found in the pension papers are: Eleanor (called the second child), Abigail, Isaac and Betsey. There are obvious gaps in the records.

There is a death record in the old books which may or may not be Sarah Durham Fall. Her age is given as 88yrs at the time of death which would give her a birth year of 1759/1760. Close enough? She died of old age.

Research: Find source of birth information???

Marr:	10 Feb 1778, Hudson, Columbia Co, NY7

Children:	Eleanor (1782-1871) married Gott WITT
Henry (1791-1831) married Amy BAILEY
James married Irene/Irena LUNNON/LENNON/LUMAN (?)
Hannah married Abel SCOTT
Abigail (1800-) (Abby) married Anson POTTER
Isaac (1802-) married Abagail Elizabeth GUERNSEY
Betsey (1804-) (Elizabeth B.) married Newman/Numan HOLLY/HOLLEY/HAWLEY

FYI Here is a link to a Jefferson County site where you can find a sketch of Abby FALL (Mrs. Anson POTTER) and her hubbyh
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/jefferson/ppp/

1.6 Isaac FALL
--------------------------------------------------
Birth:	1802

Isaac was 18 in 1820 according to the summary of his father’s pension papers.2

Some of following is from a posting by Casey M. Prentice to the FALL surname site through Ancestry.com/Rootsweb. I have added information in from Ancestry.com records:

..... 4 Issac Fall b: 1802 in Sackets Harbor, NY d: 25 Oct 1895 in/near Elmore, Ohio (I don’t know where this death date came from. Could not find Isaac in the US Censuses after 1840, so appears to have died circa 1845 in Ohio. In 1840, Isaac H. Fall and family were in Hampden, Geauga County, Ohio, with 2 males under age 5, 1 male age 5 to 10, one male age 10 to 15, one male age 30 to 40, 1 female under age 5, 2 females age 5 to 10, and one female age 30 to 40).
http://www.cousinconnect.com/d/a/66737
Isaac passed away at a young age in Marblehead, Ottawa Co. In 1860 she, Calista and Adeline/Adaline were in Ballville, Sandusky County, Ohio).
......... 5 (perhaps) Louisa Fall b. ~1833 NY (was on the same page in 1850 Census as Abagail and children – no Isaac – in Ballville, Sandusky County, Ohio)
............. 5 Seth Fall b: 1835 in NY married Jane NEELY 13 Feb 1859 in Sandusky County, Ohio
............. 5 Amos William Fall b: 1836 in Sackets Harbor, NY d: Bet. 1900 - 1910
................. +Hannah Kistler b: 1834 in Melborne, OH d: 26 Jun 1906
............. 5 Caliston Fall b: 08 Mar 1839 d: 27 Jul 1918 in Lenewee Co.
Reading your reply to a Isaac Fall research request you volunteered information on Henry Hatevil Fall. Could you email this to me also? I am the great grand daughter of Vera Fall, who was a great grand daughter of Calistan Fall.

Any information would be helpful on Hatevil.

Thank you
-Heather Howell Carroll
