Mary Falloon and William Campbell are my G G Grandparents.Annie would be Mary's sister as she emigrated along wth a brother John or Jack and a cousin Sarah Foster at the same time. Mary's father was a farmer and was a staunch Orangeman. He was also connected with the Cotton or Linen Mills in Northern Ireland.Mary was a Nursery Governess to private homes looking after small children.Would love to see the photo if possible and maybe share any info you have.

Faloona/ Mcmanus

Hello,
I have been searching for James Mcmanus and his wife Mary Falloona (spelling ?) They had a son Daniel Mcmanus who according to his death certificate and cemetery records, was born August 15, 1851 in Portaferry Ireland. He was my husbands greatgrandfather and died in Seattle Washington. I have only heard of Portaferry in County Down, Ireland. I know there were Mcmanus's there. Daniels mother, Mary, died there in childbirth we were told. Has anyone heard of this family? Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Jane

I'm another Faloona looking for ancestors in County Down. I've traced back to Thomas Faloona who is the father of Hugh and Hannah. Hugh was born in 1847 and the family emigrated to Canada shortly after. The entire family including mother Anne is recorded in the 1861 Canadian census living in Collingwood. I've found lots of Faloonas and variants in County Down but I can find birth census or marriage records for any of my lot.

Does anyone know where I can get records for the first half of the 19th century? verything I've found is spotty.

Thanks
Andrea

Robert James Johnson

Robert James Johnson was a 'remittance man' sent to New Zealand in 1898. Documents indicate he claimed he was born in East St.Louis on 11 Dec 1874 to Robert James Johnson (Father) and Elizabeth Ann Johnson (nee Fairbairn). This has not been able to be verified. Seeking information on arrival of Robert Jr in NZ in 1898. Robert married Barbara Anne Sinclair at Knox Church, Dunedin, Otago NZ, in 1901. He is listed in NZ Army records for WWI but it is not believed he went overseas due to his large family of children. He died in Dunedin in 1929 aged 54 after '41 years living in NZ'. Any help with tracking down his arrival in NZ, port of departure in the US and any details of his life in the US would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think Joseph would be an ancestor of mine. As far as I know I have a connection to a Maria Hewitt who married a Stewart Falloon in 1830. This would though be in the Ballinderry area of County Antrim.
I wonder what connection your Joseph has to the Stewart Falloon line.

I am interested to see that you write Brindsley as all the origianal documentation I have, including a copy of a court document, it is Brinsley Edward Falloon. Brinsely's Uncle in Ireland was Brinsley Edward Falloon and I am guessing his first name is somehow connected to Rev. Brinsley Nixon A.M, Chaplain of Steven’s Hospital, Dublin 1801.

Noel

The aforementioned letter from Wm Greer of Magheragall, Co. Antrim to Robert Philpot of Pittsburgh, Pa also refers to Ballinderry friends, thus affirming a link between Magheragall and Ballinderry in my line as well. Robert Philpot(1822-1890s) married Jane West (of Scottish descent)
and moved west to Humboldt Co., Nebraska.

Also I have a copy of a handwritten letter written from a Greer in Co. Antrim, Ire. (Magheragall) circa 1847 to an indirect ancestor Robert Philpot in Pittsburgh, Pa. It mentions a Thompson uncle of Robert's in the Magheragall vicinity, a Sterrott's cambric linen mill in Lisburn and a Dr. McHarg of Lisburn, with references to Belfast and the Potato Famine going on at the time (as you know with the industrialization, Ulster as a whole fared much better than the rest of Ireland during the famine). It is an interesting and rare glimpse into the past.

An indirect ancestor of mine, Eliza Philpot Faloon [1808-1887](twice married), married her first husband John Thompson sometime prior to 1828 at the Magheragall parish C.O.I. Anglican church. They came to America and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa, for a time where he was supposedly a dancing instructor. He died quite young along with their first child (cholera I believe) and Eliza remarried to William Faloon (1798-1888) in 1834 @ Lisbon Ohio in the home of the local Presbyterian minister at the time, Rev. Vallandigham. William Faloon knew Eliza when she was a child in Ireland supposedly, and they went on to have several children (3 or 4 of whom died in childhood).

There seems to be a connection between Ballinderry and Magheragall, they are not too far away from each other and both areas were settled by Huguenots.
In Magheragall I have Gordons, Weirs, Dawsons and Larmour families. I know that there is a connection by marriage to Greers.
Apart from family and friends you can also include the landlords surnames in the naming patterns.

Also in another line of Faloons, cousins to my g-g-grandfather Frank Faloon, was a Samuel Merrick Faloon who was known also as Merrick Faloon. Born Ohio to Samuel Hugh Faloon (born Co. Antrim, Ire.) and Ella Merrick. The Merricks were of Welsh origin I'm told, but I'm no relation to them as this is a different line of Faloons. So it seems this naming practice was rather rampant.

I think this naming practice not only signifies possible surnames of previous generations but also in honor of close friendship/kinship. I have Philpott forbears from Co. Down (Anahilt) who were close to a Greer family of Magheragall, Co. Antrim. In fact, a branch of Philpots were said to have taken the last name Greer as testament to this kinship, but were really Philpots. Conversely, in America a sister of my g-g-g-grandmother Maggie Quail (born Co. Down)-(Rebecca Quail Kampman) married a Kampman(German origin) in Ohio & my g-g-ggrandparents Joseph & Maggie Quail Faloon named their youngest son Clyde Campman Faloon (1885-1948) presumably in honor of the husband of Rebecca (Quail) Campman.

Bowden, Ashe, Hewitt, Finlay, Montgomery Beattie, Ferguson, and the list goes on. All family surnames which have been used as second names, thus Robina Ashe Hewitt, Robert Finlay Ashe. No guarantee that the practice was universal in Ulster but if you have a second name that is a surname then there is a good chance it comes from a surname of a previous generation.

Michael works at the library in Lisburn if I recall. Are you related to them? They are Catholic. Great place to stay, beautiful farm & farmhouse, cozy guestrooms.

Could you clarify what you mean by Ulster families using family names as second names? I have been researching this Ulster line of mine off and on for the past several years and am not aware to what you're referring to. If you mean other surnames that my Faloon married into (other Ulster families as well) they are as follows: Spence of the same area in co. Antrim; Philpot & Morrow (Anahilt area near Hillsborough/Ballynahinch, Co. Down; and Quail & Bailey of the Ballyculter area near Strangford & south of Portaferry in the Lecale peninsula, Co. Down.

I should make it plain that I do not know if I am related to Falloons or not. Merely that some of my family married into a Falloon family.
Also "my" Falloons came mainly from the townland of Aghalee, not Ballinderry, although the two places are within a few miles of each other.
I link to the Falloons who were recorded in the 1851 census for Aghalee. Before that date I just cannot get back very far. Your first names do not help because they are so common, the Aghalee Falloons had the more distinctive first names of Charles, Stewart and Jeramiah.
From the dates of your Falloons leaving Ireland and the reliable records in Ireland there is rather a frustrating gap. A missing link which happens far too often in Irish research.
No surnames used as second names in your family? Ulster families seem to have had the custom of using family surnames as second names, handy clues to research.
Will gladly send you the details I have on Falloon marriages but please contact me directly for that.

David

I started this thread several years back. I too might connect with your Faloon line, albeit at a point somewhere in the eighteenth century. My line were Presbyterian or Church of Ireland with Calvinistic leanings if that means anything. Line of descent stems from a William Faloon (born circa 1750) of that area (Ballinderry/Aghalee area) who married Jane Spence sometime around the 1770s. At least three of their sons made it to America- my ancestor Joseph Faloon(1789-1864), William Faloon (1798-1888) and James Faloon(1783-?). Also another brother John Faloon may have emigrated. All assumedly left via Belfast- Joseph in ~1809 and William in ~1818 specifically. They were thought to have entered the US through Baltimore, MD and proceeded to Carlisle, PA and from there westward to Pittsburgh, PA thence on to Ohio. Feel free to post any further info on your line if you can. The names William and Joseph seem to be repeated through the generations. Maybe we stem from the William Faloon born ~1750?

Yes please, would be interested in exchanging information. I have a record of three Faloon marriages from the area and there may well be a connection.

David

Falloon - Reid - Marraige - New Zealand

Searching on New Zealand BDM Site I have discovered the 1865 (index no. 7034) marraige of William James Falloon to Matilda Reid. Further I have discovered the 1907 (index no. 8798) death of an 80 year old Matilda Falloon. This is inconsistant with other reports I have read of the 1864 marraige of two persons of the same name, there the Matrilda Reid said to have been born in 1842. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Dear glenyssap,

My mother Alison Wood (nee Falloon) is the only child of the Andrew and Elizabeth Sarah Falloon (nee Bell) you mention your mother has a picture of with a Clydesdale horse. My email is jewood@xtra.co.nz. John Falloon was the son of Arthur and Emma Falloon who lived in Killinchy near Leeston. Arthur died in the early 1880s. My mother would be interested to know more about the horse judging, as her parents were quite old when she was born so she can only remember a tractor.
