Dear Dave,
My great-grandfather was an African-American named William Fambrough (or Willie H. Fambrough;1930 census). He died in Los Angeles,CA. he was born in Monroe,Ga around 1867( the year changes on different reports). My problem is there was another William Fambrough born in Monroe about the same time. I found them both on the 1880 census. They both have brothers, older and younger.
My grandmother told me that the family left Georgia around 1898 because William's brother was murdered by the "klan". He was trying to organize African-Americans to vote. The klan came and dragged him behind a horse until he was dead. The told William that they would do the same to him if he didn't leave the area.
I found the family living in Lonoke,Arkansas in 1900. Later, they moved to Los Angeles,Ca. If I knew which family had a son who was killed, I would be more positive about which line I'm related to. Tenatively,I've chosen Mid Fambrough. I hope you can help. Thanks, Val Brown
