Hello Everyone,
I am looking to see if anyone reading this message may have a connection to a certain Charles Fanning of New Orleans who is of potential interest to me, as I believe he may be related to my own Fanning family. Below I will list some details that I have currently gathered via the 1870 New Orleans census and death certificate for Charles Fanning. I have also included information on the related Dougherty family through Charles's daughter Catherine Fanning.
I am still in the process of determining if this particular Charles Fanning is indeed the Charles Fanning who was a Private for the Confederate Army - 15th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, Company D. If so, then I will know for certain that this particular Charles Fanning is a Fanning related cousin of my Cincinnati Ohio based Fanning family.
The death certificate lists Charles Fanning (born abt. 1831) as being 67 years old at the time of his death on April 19, 1898 at 424 Adele Street in New Orleans. Charles is listed as being born in Roscommon, Ireland.
Charles Fanning was married to a certain Catherine McKeown (born about Feb. 1840, Ireland - died June 28, 1908, New Orleans at No. 2017 Thomas Street) on February 7, 1866 in New Orleans by a Justice of the Peace.
The 1870 New Orleans Census lists Charles Fanning as a laborer, with his wife Catherine and their children whom include:
1. Daniel Fanning (born May 1867 - died October 21, 1904, New Orleans)
2. Mary Fanning (born August 1856 - died ?)
3. Kate Fanning (born February 1858 - died December 29, 1932, New Orleans)
4. William Fanning (born about 1862 - died ?)
I would later spot the Fanning family in the 1900 New Orleans Census. This time you will see Catherine McKeown Fanning and her son Daniel and daughter Mary living with her widowed daughter Catherine Fanning Doughtery and her children at 435 Adele Street. Catherine Fanning appears to have married a certain William Dougherty and their children included:
1. William Patrick Dougherty (born Feb. 5, 1880 - died Jan. 27, 1923, New Orleans)
2. Mary Dougherty (born Nov. 7, 1882 - died ?)
3. James Dougherty (born Nov. 13, 1883 - died ?)
4. John Thomas Dougherty (born July 11, 1886 - died Feb. 2, 1956, New Orleans)
5. Daniel Dougherty (born Nov. 20, 1888 - died Feb. 15, 1968, New Orleans)
6. Rosa Dougherty (born Dec. 20, 1890 - died January 25, 1949, New Orleans)
7. Katie Dougherty (born Feb. 8, 1893 - died Sept. 1974, Covington, Saint Tammany, Louisiana)
William Patrick Dougherty was married to Mollie Noud (died March 16, 1942, New Orleans). In the 1910 Census it appears that they have a daughter named Florence, born about 1907. In the 1930 Census, Florence name is spelled as Alma then recorded as 23 years old. I do not currently know if Florence/Alma was ever married or not.
Daniel Joseph Dougherty was married to Mary Lapour in 1911 in New Orleans.
Katie Dougherty appears to have been married to someone with the last name Friberg.
Rose Agnes Dougherty was married to Matthew James Brodtman in March 1927 in New Orleans.
If anyone sees any connection to the above Fanning or Dougherty families, I am very much looking forward to hearing from you!
Colin
