Bryan Fannin Family Birth Years Found

I have recently found Amelia Co., Va. documents that disclose the birth years for several members of Bryan Fannin, Sr.'s immediate family members. Until now, these dates have only been an estimate, but the documentation substantiates the birth years suggested.

Achilles Fannin, Sr. b. 1728 - 1730
Bryan Fannin, Jr. b. 1728/1730
Laughlin Fannin b. 1746/1747
Jehu (John) Fannin b. 1746/1747
William Fannin (son of Achilles) b. 1749/1750

I have two files of documentation on this. If anyone would like copies, please contact me at jpfannin@hotmail.com.

Regards,

Pat Fannin

Hello there - my ancestors came from Tipperary at that time - my relative, Robert Fanning came over to settle in England. i remember my mother telling me stories about his life when I was a wee girl - including a bit of heresay, that most of his immediate family emigrated to America when someone discovered some Spanish gold and the family came into a wee bit of money!!!Apparently the Spanish use to sail around the coast and 'supposedly' a member of the fanning family made a 'discovery' and took most of the clan off to USA as a result...folklore...fact...I'll do some investigation amongst relatives and see whether they've heard the story too!

Current DNA Results on Fannin(g)s
DNA Research Pertaining to Bryan Fannin, Sr. of Amelia County, Va. and Other Fannings

As you know most paper sources of information on the early Fannins has been exhausted. Perhaps the continued work with the Fanning DNA Project will one day open a lot of doors for our history. It has already given us some real good insight into several lost branches of the family and has also helped refute some long held mis-information regarding the connection to the Edmund Fanning line of Connecticut. As of August of 2009, two proven descendants of Edmund Fanning of Stonington, Conn. have had their DNA tested. The results prove conclusively that the Edmund Fanning family is in no way connected to the Bryan Fannin family of Amelia County, Virginia. Not only do the allele markers fail to match, but the two lines are in two separate haplogroups. Bryan’s haplogroup is R1b1b2, whereas Edmund’s is l1. You will find further information on alleles & haplogroups at www.familytreedna.com.

Even as I write, we are expecting new test results from a Sussex Co., Va. Fannin, who descends from Bryan Fannin, Jr. and Rachel Rottenberry. We recently received the results on a Tallapoosa Co., Alabama Fannin whose family came from Georgia. His DNA shows a match to others who descend from Bryan Fannin, Sr. of Amelia Co., Va. We are not sure how the Alabama Fannin descends from Bryan, Sr. at this time, but it must be through either Bryan’s son Laughlin Fannin or his son Jehu Fannin.

We have also found that two descendants of Middleton Fanning match the other descendants of Bryan Fannin, Sr. of Amelia Co., Va. Again, just how they connect is still unknown, but the genetic connection to Old Bryan is certain. They, too, may connect through Laughlin or Jehu. Possibly in time we will have enough tests completed to form a mosaic that clearly shows the connection.

Old Bryan’s son, Achilles Fannin, Sr., has been well represented in the Fanning DNA Project. At least seven descendants of Achilles Fannin, Sr. have been tested – one from Ohio by way of Boyd Co., Ky., one from Carter Co., Ky., one from Floyd Co., Ky. by way of W.V., two from Morgan Co., Ky., one from Missouri by way of Wythe Co., Va. There are several others who have tested and match Old Bryan’s line, but their connections are uncertain at this time. One is from Johnson Co., Ky by way of West Virginia and one is adopted and does not know his real parents’ names or where they lived. More testing from Achilles’ line may solve some long kept secrets.

One person has tested who descends from James Fannin(g) of SC. This line is also distantly connected to Chestnut Creek John Fanning & Old Bryan Fannin. This line goes on to Abraham Fannin of Georgia. It is part of the family that includes Col. James Fannin of Goliad, Texas fame.

A significant number of the project tests are from descendants of Chestnut Creek John Fanning of Wythe Co., Va. There are thirteen tests for this family and different lines within this family are clearly being demonstrated. The fascinating part of this for Old Bryan’s descendants is that this line shows a clear connection to Old Bryan Fannin somewhere within a genealogical time frame. Perhaps Chestnut Creek John Fanning & Old Bryan Fannin, Sr. were close cousins. In comparing 37 markers, the probability that tests F-1 & F-27 (Chestnut Creek John’s line) and tests F-2, F-4 & F-8 (Old Bryan’s line) share a common ancestor within the last eight generations is 89% and a 97% probability within twelve generations.

Another fascinating aspect of the Fanning DNA Project has been the distant genetic connection between Chestnut Creek John Fanning’s markers, James Fanning’s markers and Bryan Fannin, Sr.’s markers to several Fannings who have roots in County Leitrim, Ireland. One person is from Daviess Co., Indiana and descends from Fenagh Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. One is from Rhode Island and descends from Sruhaun, Fenagh Parish, Co. Leitrim. One has recently tested from Dublin and he descends from Scardawn, Fenagh Parish, Co. Leitrim. We are awaiting the results of this last test, as well as, another Irish test received
recently.

There has always been a question as to the connection of Benoni Fanning of Maryland to Old Bryan Fannin, Sr. of Amelia Co.,Va. One of Benoni’s descendants has tested and does not match Bryan, Chestnut Creek John, James of S.C., Edmund of Connecticut or any of the Irish lines. Another descendant of Benoni has recently tested and we are awaiting the results to see if they confirm the first test.

In addition, we have tests by Fannings from Australia, Spain & England; none of these match Old Bryan’s line.

So you see there is a lot going on in the Fanning DNA Project and much of it relates to the descendants of Bryan & Elizabeth

(Continued on back)

Fannin of Amelia County, Va. circa 1698-1765. I hope this stirs you to either have your DNA tested or contribute to having others tested, either by locating male descendants who would test or by making a financial contribution to the project for others to be tested.

Family Tree DNA has been running several special sales on tests each year. Maybe that would help some of you to decide to test. Please go to the Fanning DNA Project webpage for details at: www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/f/fanning.

DEFINITIONS
Allele - A DNA sequence that repeats at a certain locus (plural Loci) or place. The allele value is the number of times the sequence repeats. Pronounced uh-LEEL.
Haplogroup - A genetic population group associated with early human migrations and which can today be associated with a geographic region. It is important to note that even though female and male haplogroups may have the same letters, their definitions are different.
Haplotype - One person's set of values for the markers that have been tested. Two individuals that match exactly on all markers have the same haplotype.
.
Best Regards,
J Patric Fannin
jpfannin@hotmail.com or 221 North Fifth Street, Ironton, Ohio 45638 Phone: 1-740-533-0001
August 12, 2009
Thank you for the reply. I'm researching on my husband's line. John Fanning/Sarah Jane Schuck parent's of Sarah Fanning (b. 1851 in Butler, Harrison, MO). Sarah married Wesley Duley in Jun. 1868. They had four daughters, Lottie, Sarah Jane, Alice, and Minnie before they separated. Alice lived with Wesley's mother (Annie) and stepfather, Tom Brannon from age 6-11 when she moved in with a family to care for their children. Alice was my husband's great-grandmother and lived within fourteen days of turning 100 years of age, we were fortunate to know her. Trying to connect with her family line.

Charles Fanning family of New Orleans

Hello Everyone,

I am looking to see if anyone reading this message may have a connection to a certain Charles Fanning of New Orleans who is of potential interest to me, as I believe he may be related to my own Fanning family. Below I will list some details that I have currently gathered via the 1870 New Orleans census and death certificate for Charles Fanning. I have also included information on the related Dougherty family through Charles's daughter Catherine Fanning.

I am still in the process of determining if this particular Charles Fanning is indeed the Charles Fanning who was a Private for the Confederate Army - 15th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, Company D. If so, then I will know for certain that this particular Charles Fanning is a Fanning related cousin of my Cincinnati Ohio based Fanning family.

The death certificate lists Charles Fanning (born abt. 1831) as being 67 years old at the time of his death on April 19, 1898 at 424 Adele Street in New Orleans. Charles is listed as being born in Roscommon, Ireland.

Charles Fanning was married to a certain Catherine McKeown (born about Feb. 1840, Ireland - died June 28, 1908, New Orleans at No. 2017 Thomas Street) on February 7, 1866 in New Orleans by a Justice of the Peace.

The 1870 New Orleans Census lists Charles Fanning as a laborer, with his wife Catherine and their children whom include:

1. Daniel Fanning (born May 1867 - died October 21, 1904, New Orleans)
2. Mary Fanning (born August 1856 - died ?)
3. Kate Fanning (born February 1858 - died December 29, 1932, New Orleans)
4. William Fanning (born about 1862 - died ?)

I would later spot the Fanning family in the 1900 New Orleans Census. This time you will see Catherine McKeown Fanning and her son Daniel and daughter Mary living with her widowed daughter Catherine Fanning Doughtery and her children at 435 Adele Street. Catherine Fanning appears to have married a certain William Dougherty and their children included:

1. William Patrick Dougherty (born Feb. 5, 1880 - died Jan. 27, 1923, New Orleans)
2. Mary Dougherty (born Nov. 7, 1882 - died ?)
3. James Dougherty (born Nov. 13, 1883 - died ?)
4. John Thomas Dougherty (born July 11, 1886 - died Feb. 2, 1956, New Orleans)
5. Daniel Dougherty (born Nov. 20, 1888 - died Feb. 15, 1968, New Orleans)
6. Rosa Dougherty (born Dec. 20, 1890 - died January 25, 1949, New Orleans)
7. Katie Dougherty (born Feb. 8, 1893 - died Sept. 1974, Covington, Saint Tammany, Louisiana)

William Patrick Dougherty was married to Mollie Noud (died March 16, 1942, New Orleans). In the 1910 Census it appears that they have a daughter named Florence, born about 1907. In the 1930 Census, Florence name is spelled as Alma then recorded as 23 years old. I do not currently know if Florence/Alma was ever married or not.

Daniel Joseph Dougherty was married to Mary Lapour in 1911 in New Orleans.

Katie Dougherty appears to have been married to someone with the last name Friberg.

Rose Agnes Dougherty was married to Matthew James Brodtman in March 1927 in New Orleans.

If anyone sees any connection to the above Fanning or Dougherty families, I am very much looking forward to hearing from you!

Colin

Hi, I have just started searching and have limited information. My maternal grandfather was a Fanning from Queensland (mainly Wide Bay area we believe) and he had a brother Tommy and a sister Ally/Ellen. We believe his parents were Katherine Anne Lynch and James Fanning and they immigrated from County Cork. I would be interested to hear if you have any information to share as well as vice versa. I don't know if there is a Millie Russell connection in our family, the name has never come up.
Cheers,
Lisa

John Roslyn Fanning

Hi Guys I'm looking for John Roslyn Fanning. He was B:in 1914
in Ithaca New York. He attended Cornell University probably around 1933-1937. He married Helen Erma Ricks on Jan 17, 1938. They probably divorced sometime after 1940. He has two daughters that have never met or seen him. My mom has since passed away but I would like to find any info I can on him. My Aunt Pat is still living and looking for him as well. Any info would be helpful. I'm going to try to attach my mom's birth cert for proof of her parents.

Re: Arvin Fanning..M..Oma 'Dobbs' Adams

Becci,
My father was Kenneth Earl Fanning, son of Arvin and Oma. Do you know any of Dora's, (my Father's sister) children, I know one of them, or their kids was trying to trace the family tree, but he was tracing Oma's side. Please let me know what you find. I did not know that Oma had any siblings, She was adopted by the Dobbs family. Arvin probably died also in Chowchilla, since that is where my father grew up.

First I would try the East Fallowfield township to ask where the cemeteries are
610-384-7144
fax 610-384-7143

If they can't help, get there death certificates from PA vital records. You can get with just the year of death at no extra charge.

Here is a list of three cemeteries in the area
Cemeteries: Mushrush Cemetery, McMichael Cemetery, Jackson Cemetery.

Cemeteries in East Fallowfield
Doe Run Friends Burial Ground
Derrymeeting Rd, Doe Run, PA

East Fallowfield Friends Burial Ground
Doe Run Rd.

Hephzibah Baptist cemetery
82 Park Ave., Coatesville, PA 19380 (610) 384-9566

Doe Run Presbyterian cemetery
Strasburg Rd at Church Rd., 19320

Ercildoun cemetery
Route 82 and Glenrose Rd

Church of Christ Ercildoun
