Cait,
Thanks for responding. I thought you had figured out there was no link and gave up. I have waited a long time to find John Manion and Catherine Finegan in Ireland and I can wait as long as it takes. Do you have information on both of these families? I know nothing of either.
I'm taking my 89 year old mom back to Terre Haute Indiana for her last hurrah and hope to uncover things in the library, graveyard and courthouse.
Thanks
Sue

Glad to share it. Hope you find something interesting - the stuff I found for my family was mostly little stuff like trespassing or bringing someone to court for not paying school fees - I think it truly is "petty" :-) but still fun and it helped me uncover my g grandfather's fathers name. You can just do a search on Fannon and then use the filters to help you out. For the petty court records you can type "Williamstown" into the "What else" spot and it narrows it down. Good luck!

Thank you for this! What a find! I expect that the court stuff had to do with my great grand mother Biddy Garvey Fannon attempting to reclaim her land from Conneely. I never knew it went to court. I cannot imagine that they were too often in court! Thanks for info!

My 2x great grandfather, John Manion, came from Castletogher and I just found out married a woman named Catherine Finegan. They were both born in the 1820's and must have married in the 1840's as I think their first daughter, margaret was born in 1842. The began having the rest of their family around 1850 consisting of Michael, Patrick, Hannah, John Michael all in Ireland and then Ellen in Terre Haute Indiana. Anybody know anything about this who could help me break down my brick wall? Thanks

Mary McDermott is from Fortyacres, which is a small town in the Williamstown area. I have pictures from there also. So we are related on the McDermott side as well. Also possibly on the Mary Mitchell side. For some reason the Fanning dates don't match up, but we can figure it out.

We are travelling today, but I will figure out a way to let your wife look at my tree.

Very excting!
Hello and thanks very much for your reply, Trish.

My wife Anne's great-grandfather was John J. Fannon, who was Pat and Mariah's brother. In addition, her great-grandmother on the Kenny side was a Mary McDermott from near Williamstown. Perhaps there is a connection on that side as well.

You should be able to see our Kenny Family tree from my profile but I will send you an invitation anyway since once you accept an invitation to view, the tree will show up in your Family Trees drop down list and will be easier to find should you wish to revisit.

I'm sure that my wife and her sister would love to see the pictures. You cannot make attachments via these messages and I can't see your tree in your profile but if you send me an invitation to view I should be able to see the photos that way.

Alternately, you could send my wife the photos as an attachment in a regular email message to annecarey@quickclic.net

John

Hello.

John Fanning, who I think was also called eRed Johnni Fanning, from Kilbeg,(near Williamstown, Galway) who would be the John who was 70 years old in the 1901 Census, is my GG Grandfather.

His son Pat, who married Mary Baggott, is the Pat who was 36 years old in the census. He would be my great uncle. His sister Mary (Mariah) is my great grandmother. Pat was known as "the Man" Fanning, and there are great legends about him (being able to pick up a horse, being the strongest man anyone knew, etc.) I've been to the family home in Kilbeg. John's home is now fallen down, Pat's is still standing, right next to it, but is essentially not liveable either. I have pictures of these homes in my tree
If I can figure out how to attach a photo, I will.

Sorry, can't figure out how to attach from my own tree. Seems like that should be obvious.

Lillie Mae Fannon/Matheny/Watkins

I'm looking for information on my great-grandmother Lillie Mae. She was born in Missouri in 1884. I believe her maiden name was Fannon. She married William James Matheny in Arkansas in 1903 and had three daughters: Beulah Mae, Myrtle, and Crystal Nevada. She then married James M. Watkins and had one daughter, Clara. I believe that someone in her family, possibly her mother, married a Cherokee. The earliest information I can find on her is from the 1910 census. This shows her mother and father both from Virginia. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Thanks very much for this information. When in Williamstown lately I visited the grave of Father Coyne in Templetogher. I was going to go to the new cathedral in Longford to see Fr Murray but never did it.
My email is wizzhy2u@btinternet.com if that helps. The name spelling Kyne is interesting. Sometimes a priest would write as pronounced and we always called Coyne Kyne, Dan Kyne is how I would say his brother's name to this day.I will attempt to secure info on the Egan connection. It is news to me but I am only 60!!
Thanks again.

Hi Cait,

Further to previous correspondence on Father Patrick Coyne
late of Straid, Templetogher and Killannin parish, Galway -
1874 to 1899, I attach a copy of marriage of his sister Mary
to Patrick Egan in 1865. It appears that he is the groomsman
for Patrick Egan, also copy of birth certificate of a daughter of Patrick Egan and Mary Coyne. See the spelling
"Kyne" rather than "Coyne" in the marriage certificate.

Best Wishes,

I'm sorry to say that I have no information on the Noonans or an Ellen Carabine. I have run across a couple of Ellen Fannons, both of whom seem to have been born in Kilbeg. One was born in 1876 and the other around 1904. The second one was was living in Kilbeg with her parents Patrick and Mary Fannon and her grandfather John Fannon at the time of the 1911 census.

That is about all I know. My wife is a descendent of another John Fannon who lived nearby in Islands East so I have not looked into this family. I only collected enough information to sort out which was which.
Hi Jackie...I know this question is a few years late, but I just ran across this post. I was wondering if you had any info on Earl Fannon? Recently found out that my Dad had a much older half brother named Earl. Just wondering if this could be him. Dad said he was killed in a car wreck, so this post hit me as a possibility. Thanks! Bev Fannon Barnett

Haven't use roots in a while.
Thank you for responding.
My mom never spoke much about her family(she really didn't speak much about any of her past)As far as I know Jake Dainels Fannon is my grandfather I beleive he was once married to Adelle Cattlet (don't know if last name is spelled right) She is my mothers mom.As for all the other names you mentioned I have ran across them in my searches but don't know any of them.
I am at a loss when it comes to searching for my family. I don't have many names to go by except what I see when I search. Any information I come across leaves me feeling a bit hopeful.
If you have anything new you would like to share, please do.
Oh and the birth date I mentioned for my mom was 1 year off.
Naydene Estelle Fannon (Collins) my mom
Born Jan. 21, 1942 in Oklahoma
She was also married once before. Her last name before Collins was Teufel.

Thanks,
Penny

Joseph Fannin b 1802 wife ? Easterling name found

The death certificate for one of Joseph Fannin's daughters has been located. We know from the 1850 Lawrence Co., Ky. census that Joseph Fannin was born in Va. ca 1802 and lived in Lawrence Co., Ky. and that he had a daughter named Sarah born ca.1839 according to that same census. The death certificate is: Certificate #27182 Bureau of Vital Statistics for Commonwealth of Kentucky for Sarah A. Prater. It seems Sarah Fannin had married and divorced a man named Prater. She is found in the 1910 Census for Lawrence Co., Ohio, Upper Township, Ironton, Ohio House # 346 94 100, where she worked as a Laundress for the John Sword family. She was listed as age 70 and divorced, Born Ky. In the 1920 Federal Census of Boyd Co., Ky. she is found in the household of Mason (Masin) & Lucinda Branham living in Catlettsburg, Boyd Co., Ky. Household #245 (be sure to notice the members of this household are listed on two pages). She had been divorced. Her death certificate shows that she was born Sept. 13, 1840 and died in Ashland, Ky. on Nov. 21, 1923, age 83. It lists her as a widow. Her father is listed as Joseph Fannin b. Ky Her mother is listed as Rachel Easterling b. Ky. She was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, Ohio The informant was Mrs. M. Branham of Ashland, Ky. Now we know for a fact that Joseph Fannin was married to Thomas Easterling's daughter and that her name was Rachel. That's probably where Rachel Emeline Fannin Burton got her name. I believe Rachel Emeline Fannin Burton, wife of Andrew Jackson Burton, was a daughter of Joseph Fannin. The certificate also shows us that Elizabeth Kitchen was Joseph's first wife & Rachel Easterling was the second. I still believe Bryant Fannin (who m. Louisa Clay)was a son of Joseph Fannin & now we know because of his birth year (1825) that his mother must have been Elizabeth Kitchen, since Joseph couldn't have married Rachel before he did Elizabeth and still have a child named Sarah born in 1840. Thanks to Cathy Phillips of Oregon for locating this certificate. Pat Fannin jpfannin@hotmail.com

Yes. My wife remembers your mother (her aunt) Sarah well.

I have some Irish census records that have helped fill out John and Julia's families. In addition, I have located both John and Julia in census records from New York and Boston from their time there.

We should compare notes.

I think that it probably depends on what you mean by related since, as I recall, your mother was born in Kilmore. Here is what I have put together since my original message a while ago.

Our Mary Kate Fannon was born in Kilmore, Templetogher (Williamstown) parish, Co. Galway, March 5, 1915. Her parents were Julia Delaney and John Fannon, who were married in Williamstown on February 14, 1914. She married Patrick Francis Kenny around 1933 when she was 19 and he was 21. Mary Kate died in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on December 1, 1998 at the age of 83.

Julia Delaney went to America with her brother Tom in 1895 and lived in Boston before she returned to Kilmore to marry John Fannon.

John Fannon’s parents were John Fannon and Marie O’Connor.

John and Marie Fannon and some of their children are listed in the 1901 census of Templetogher, living in Island East. The family is listed as John, a 47 year old Galway born farmer, his wife listed as Maria (50), their sons John (21) and James (19), and daughter Bridget (17). The family is listed in the 1911 census on Island East as consisting of John (tailor, 66), Mary (69), and their son James (27). At the time of this census, John Jr. was still living in New York where he worked as a tram conductor. John Fannon Jr. died on January 14, 1951 in Kilmore at the age of 71.

So, although John Fannon's family were from Island East, by 1815 they were living in or near Williamstown. My wife's mother Mary Kate worked as a dressmaker in Williamstown before her marriage.

Do you think that any of this connects?

John Carey
A search of the Glenamaddy Registration District birth registrations for Mary Kate Fannon turned up four for the relevant time period. My wife's mother's is the third in this list. I'm not sure which is yours.

1. registered April - June 1897

2. registered April - June 1904

3. registered April - June 1915

4. registered April - June 1923

There were other Mary Kate Fannon's registered in Roscommon, but this is confusing enough.

John

Cait,

The position is that in 1940 there was a fire in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth in which all of the student
files got destroyed. All that is available is an index of
Maynooth students and Ordinations - (source- President as
of January 16th, 2009).

A search of students from 1848 to 1855 by a former teacher
in St. Jarlath's College, Tuam did not reveal any student
named "Patrick Coyne".

Killannin was in the Diocese of Tuam until 1890 when
it was transferred to Galway. Father Coyne objected
as it was done without consultation with him. He appealed
to Rome and his appeal failed. This is a long story invol-
ving many issues.
In November, 1879 Father Coyne chaired a meeting of the
local Land League Association in his church grounds at
which there was reported to be in the region of 6,000
people present and which was addressed by Michael Davitt.
He later attended a Land League meeting in the Rotonda in
Dublin at which a motion proposed by him that people should
not occupy lands in which others had been evicted was adopted without dissent. Where people were being evicted in his parish he always attended to make sure that they had
somebody to speak for them.

The issue is "What do we know about him before he entered
Maynooth in 1867". The period afterwards is well documented.

Bye for Now,

Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for this. I wonder whether Maynooth might have details. It is St Patrick's Seminary, Maynooth. There is a university for everyone there now but the seminary is still going independently and alongside the university. I went there in the 80's.
I expect that the priest went to St Jarlath;s College Tuam, a junior seminary for the Archdiocese of Tuam. Although Bekan is in Tuam diocese I am not sure about Killanin.
I know about you from Eileen then. She and Leo visited me here n August. Her brother died in October and her daughter had a baby boy just after Christmas, the first grandchild.

I think Dan Coyne has a headstone although I could be wrong, and I feel that he died around 1931. My mother remembers him and she was born in 1923. She is Eileen's aunt.
St Jarlath's is still on the go. My coousin Pat Finnegan taught there until his death aged 56 about 5 years ago. I expect that there is a historian in the Bishop's Palace next door. The bishop is Michael Neary. Let me know if this produces any lost link. I used to live in Tuam as well!

Good luck with the search. I will see whether my mother can account for the age difference in the Coyne brothers.
Cait

Cait,

Many thanks for your reply on Father Coyne.

I am not a relation. I did meet Eileen and her husband over two years ago in Templetogher and she showed
the the Coyne farmstead. The photos I attached were
taken by me.
The difficulty I have is that on Father Coyne's death
certificate he is shown as being 55 years and on his grave
stone 64 years. I have not been able to get details of
his parents deaths on www.familysearch.org. His brother
Daniel is shown to have died in 1931, so this leaves a
large age gap between the two brothers.

Regards,

Jim

I pity you trying to sort out this lot! Kilmore Fannon's are not Templetogher or Islands or Kilbeg Fannon's! They are my Fannon's. Yours are different. However, I am grateful to know the details you have picked upp. Somehow the message page only flashed up today on another query. My elderly mother might be able to help us although she has become very frail in the past couple of months although her mind is very alert. She is in Ireland. I will try to get something back to you in a week or so! Cait Hutchings

Thank you for the query. If you see photograph of Templetogher graveyard, that is in land that belonged to Dan Coyne, now in the ownership of Thomas Conneally, Straide, the next village across the road off the Road to Castletogher.
Eileen Finnegan has recently researched Fr Coyne and his activities and it is published in a local year book, not in my possession. I will ask her to send me details that might add to your research. Are you a relation. I live in UK but am from Shanballly very close to Templetogher.
Cait Hutchings
