I lived and graduated from High School in Indianapolis. My Grandfather was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan area. There are a lot of Fargo's that arrived in the early to mid 1800,s in the counties around Grand Rapids down to Kalamazoo. Most of the Fargo's came from the New York area before moving the Michigan. Still looking for the connection of David Fargo (my Great G Grandfather) and his parents.

There are a number of Fargo's in Indiana. When my dad was in high school at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, his brother John was asked if he had a brother is school. He said yes. The teacher said he would expect great work from him. The problem was he wasn't talking about my dad. There were other Fargo's in the school that were descended from Italy who came to America and Anglisized their name to Fargo.
My family of Fargo's came from a branch that were from around the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. They were from New York before that.

knfargo is related to me (a 2nd cousin) and is coming up with some great connections.

Fargo Y-DNA Surname Project - Y-DNA is in need of members. I am posting this request for members today because there is a one day super sale on DNA tests. (I am a volunteer administrator of the Fargo project and receive no money.)

It looks like we have at least two people already in the project with different ancestries converging on Jacent FARGEAU, b. circa 1622 France, died CT.

If you just want to get your feet wet, then the $59 Y-DNA test is a great price. So if you are a male Fargo, or know a related male Fargo, then this is your chance. Just go to this website and click JOIN on the bar:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Fargo/default.aspx

They will send you a test kit with a couple cheek swabs and a return envelope. Your name is not made public, it is all by kit number.

36-HOUR SALE!

START: Monday, September 26 (TODAY) at 12:00pm CDT
END: Tuesday, September 27 at 11:59pm CDT

For NEW customers:
Y-DNA 12 . . . $59 (was $99)
mtDNA . . . $59 (was $99)

Y-DNA 37 . . . $129 (was $149)
Family Finder . . . $199 (was $289)
mtFullSequence (FGS) . . . $229 (was $299)

Y-DNA 12 + mtDNA . . . $118 (was $179)
Family Finder + Y-DNA 12 . . . $248 (was $339)
Family Finder + mtDNA . . . $248 (was $339)
Family Finder + Y-DNA 37 . . . $328 (was $438)
Family Finder + mtFullSequence . . . $398 (was $559)
Comprehensive Genome (Family Finder + mtFullSequence + Y-DNA67) . . . $597 (was $797)

Upgrades & Add-Ons:
mtDNA add-on $59 . . .
I am looking for birth information for Lydia Sophia Fargo. You mentioned that she is listed in Abner's bible as his daughter. I have been looking for sometime for proof that Lydia was Abner's daughter and have been unable to do so. The only thing listed in the Barbour collection for Franklin is Lydia's marriage to Wolcot H. Ayer. Is there anyway I could get a copy of the page of the bible that has her birth listed on it? If not, do you know where I might be able to obtain a birth certificate for her? I am trying to find proof for the Mayflower Society. Your help would be most appreciated.

Thank you.
Micki

My name is Sharon Benton, Rufus Comstock Fargo was my great, great, great Grandfather. Lyman Fargo was his brother. There are numerous Moses, you need to have exact dates of death and birth.

Montery was original consisted of several villages, but many of the Fargos ended up in Monterey via Sandisfield.

I have a considerable amount of memorabilia from the Fargo family as passed down from Rufus to my Great Great Grandfather Henry to his Daughter Marrietta (Mammie) Fargo Benton to my grandfather Edward Lancaster Benton. Your welcome to look at my family tree for more of the connection, it is under Benton/Winchester, but I am getting ready to break off and do a just Fargo.

I am in the process of working with the Monterey Historian to provide her with pictures that I have of Rufus and the rest of his family when "Pine Grove", the camp on his property was used to house the 49th Infantry Unit during the Civil War. I have many diaries from Rufus Comstock Fargo and Henry Pearl Fargo, as well as countless letters written during the same period, circa the civil war.

We're hoping to use the letters and diaries to glean even more family history, so feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Hi:

I am writing a book about Frederick Stuart Church (the painter) whose aunt Fannie Stewart married James C. Fargo in 1853. (My great grandparents and grandmother were very close to him, and I have many letters from Church to my grandmother, and 2 oil paintings. I've done a lot of research on Church's families, and the Fargos, and would be so interested to know if in your photo albums if there are any pictures of FS Church. His cousins, William C. Fargo and James F. Fargo were in NYC with Church in the gilded area, and James F. signed some papers at Church's death/ crematory in 1924. Please contact me dvhobler@cox.net. Thanks, Debbie Hobler

I have no connection to the Fargo's but was doing some research on some advertisments that I found dating back to the late 1800's and found one for the "C.H.Fargo & Co. Chicago. The ad had a picture of a ladies boot and said:
The Fargo Ladies' Boot is Still in the Lead.
Why?
It Fits
It wears
It sells
It is Smooth Inside
It pleases the Eye
It sells again
It brings you other trade.
Try a sample case and be convinced.
The advertised price was $2.50.
I thought some one might be interested in this piece of trivia.

Hello Karen,

I'm trying to find who David Fargo's parents are. He is my Great-great grandfather and he was married to a Fidelia in Michigan. From what I've found so far is that he might have been a scoundral and married to more that one wife (at the same time). Don't know for sure. He was in the Civil War and I've found records the the trail goes cold when I try going back another generation.

Thanks for any help. I know this is over a year old from you post.

Jim

Only Charles Fargo I have that comes close was born 17 Sept 1827, Bozrah
Township, CT. No other info as of yet. Have you seen "Record of Fargo
Family - compiled for James Francis Fargo, by John J. Giblin NY, NY"? It
does discuss the Fargo's with American Express and Wells-Fargo. My other
Charles of that era was born 1831 Watervale, NY and died 1900 Chicago.
Greta Heller has a lot of Fargo's under Rootsweb family trees.

Herbert Fargo Clark
There is no chance mutations would create the huge differences. If all Fargo's come from New London, CT, then the difference could be a contemporary (post-1700s) adoption or out-of-wedlock birth. That is why we are seeking many more people with good ancestral documentation to join the DNA project. There is a New London male now submitting a test, and I hope other's will join.

I agree -- Allen Fargo's (of Warsaw) son John was NOT in PA ever. Also, he would have been guilty of bigamy if he married Mary Ann Chambers.

I do have your John M. in my database (which includes David Philo's info) but no info on his parents. So I am no help.

As to the DNA study, what are the chances that there was a mutation that splits the subjects into two families? I understood that all the Fargos were from one family descended from Moses of New London -- and I have not found separate families.

And mutations are not impossible -- there is a documented mutation between two brothers in another of my lines.

Two Fargo lines, I hadn't read that. Though it doesn't surprise me, now that I've looked at so many records. But I must say I thought I was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel... nope just headlights.
I have thought about the DNA, but kind of hope research would get me there. Considering the amount of time I've spent on this, DNA may be more cost effective. To bad it would only help on this line, I have bigger headaches on a few others.

Thanks,
Pete

I am sure that not all Fargo's will be tied together. The DNA project has shown there are at least two lines that are distinct. The line from , N.Y is not the same as from New London, CT, but we should know more soon as there are two test kits in the pipeline. The Pompey line appears Scandinavian while the New London line is Central European.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/fargo/default.aspx?secti...

I hope you will consider joining to see which line you are connected to.

Thanks, but thats a different John M. that John was born in November 1824 I believe. Also I've ready a bit of his history. I think my line didn't live in Warsaw (may have visited). No proof, just a feeling.
The John M. I'm descended from was also in the Civil War with the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (co C.). His nephew, cousin or possibly younger brother, Ira W. Fargo died while serving with this same unit.
John M. Fargo was born in NY and he was working on a farm in North East township, Erie Co., PA at the time of the 1850 census. I believe his future wife was doing the same in Greenfield Erie Co., about 8 miles away.
She (Mary Ann Chambers) and her brother Richard B. Chambers were working on the farm of James C. Fuller in the 1850 census.

Sometime in the 1850's John took his family to Minnesota for a few years, but they were back in North East township before the Civil War. His 3 children, Martha, Frank, and Harry, were all born before the war.
After the war he took his family south to Salem, Missouri (1870 Census), then to Texas by 1880. He lived the remainder of his life there.
John's brother-in-law and 2 children were also with the Fargo's in Salem MO in 1870.
I think I'm at least 2 generations away from tying into the more documented Fargo line.
I've found at least seven different Fargo families in New York for the 1800 and 1810 census (not all the same ones of course ;). 10 in 1820, differing as expected. By 1830 it is 25. Understand, that for me, the only way to track this generation is to watch for them to start families of there own. John M's family bible was lost (we know when/where). So I'm left with this method and scouring the web.
I'm Just putting John M Fargo out in case someone has found him. A portion of the Fargo line is not on the hartgen list and I'm of that portion's lineage, unfortunately. So that list has some errors and finding them is the hard part.

Much thanks for replying, I was afraid this board may have been forgotten. I hope this info helps anyone else who stumbles onto it. It would be nice to get all of the Fargo's tied to one tree. Maybe this internet thing is good for something after all.

Pete

Fargo's in Greenfield and North East, Erie Co., PA 1800's

Looking for any info to find a solid connection.

John Malcolm Fargo B. Dec 1832 (NY State) D. 28 Feb 1905 (TX). He married Mary Ann Chambers B. 11 May 1832 (NY state) D. 5 Oct 1884 (TX).
They are my great, great, great, grand parents.
I have most of the descendent lines and am trying to find John and Mary's parents. These two were married in North East Township, PA by the Hon William E. Marvin, Esq. in November 1858. 1858 doesn't work, so I believe the year is a transcribing error. I can no longer find the web site that had this information.
Presently looking at Calvin Fargo B. abt 1800 (NY state) D. 3 July 1873 and his wife Serena Parker B abt 1803 D. abt 1900? Calvin and Serena remained in Erie county. They are very strong candidates. I know that John and Calvin are closely related, but I can't prove him as a nephew or son.
Also, trying to track a Herriff or Haraph V French from the same area and generation as Calvin.

Any information on ANY Fargo in Erie county would be appreciated. I'm happy to pass what I have found as well.

Thanks,
Pete Fargo
Re: Nancy FARGO m. Levi HUMPHREY 17 Mar 1808 Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.

Thank you for responding. Suzanne de Vogel who has been working on this family for years likely found two of the children of Levi HUMPHREY and Nancy FARGO; Stanton and Polly. Thus it looks like Nancy is the daughter of Stanton FARGO and Fanny COMSTOCK. Stanton HUMPHREY married 9 Nov 1863 Portage Co., Ohio. However the problem is Nancy HUMPHREY is in the 1860 age 75 born MA and 1870 census age 85 born CT, Palmyra, Portage Co., Ohio, with daughter Polly and her husband John HAWK which conflicts with the "Nancy died 1832 in Genesee County, East Bethany, NY." How sure are you of her death? Mary HUMPHREY, a sister of Levi married Lancaster COMSTOCK a son of Lancaster COMSTOCK and Mary SMITH. Appreciate any help. dave.richardson@mindspring.com
Keep in mind, none of my info is PROVEN - it is only collected. I assume you are checking wills and land records as well as church records -- but it sounds to me as if you are making assumptions, which may lead you astray. Jane is a good example -- her presence there means nothing, considering there are a number of Fargos she could have been married to... she could have been single and lied to the census taker that she was a widow... the census taker could have made a mistake, etc.

My advice would be to follow everyone forward, tracing children and grandchildren, until you get to the point where they began writing biographies for county histories, etc... at that point you may start to get the clues you need.

I was in a similar situation with Nehemiah Fargo. He was in Warsaw, Wyoming, NY and I could not locate his father. I went back to the beginning (Moses Fargo b. 1649) and worked my way forward, following everyone, until Nehemiah clicked into place. (That is the data I checked for your Fargos, along with information from David Philo, who is now deceased, I think). I ended up with a pretty comprehensive collection of Fargos up until the mid 1700's -- I did not have to go further, but you may have to trace the Fargos from Vermont exhaustively to tie in your family. Not easy.

Thanks - I didn't have a Polly as a child to Gideon but I think there is an Edith there b) 1816. I think the Miranda is a child to William b) 1818. There is a church record I found (Christ Church- Maanlius, NY) that a William Fargo married Jane McCorbon - 4/8/1854 at the home of Mr. Waterman. Although Miranda was born in 1847, maybe this Jane was his 2nd wife. Only William and his mother Betsey are shown in 1850, 1855, & 1860 Manlius census. A Jane Fargo does show up in a 1860 town of Fayetteville census age 40-washwomen. The towns of Pompey, Manlius, & Fayetteville are within a 10 min drive from each other. As for the Oswego county Fargo line - all I have is what I found at this web-site. My missing link is an Edmond b) 1803 d) 1830 from a family bible who I think is a son to a Daniel. There was a Daniel in Manlius,NY who sold property in 1822. That's all I have on him. I just found the James L. when I was tracking down deeds at the courthouse. He must have had to be 18 or 20 to buy land, so I'm assuming b) 1815. All of my line of Fargo's stayed in/near Onondaga county. When I try to find info on Daniel, I find stuff on everyone else but him. It's frustrating but fun! Thanks again.

Seond half!

Gideon, b. 1789, d. 12 May 1842 Manlius, Madison Co, NY or E. Springfield, Montgomery, NY
m. Betsey Reels

Children
Polly Fargo b. abt 1817
William Fargo b. 20 May 1818 Manlius d. 12 Jul 1890 Manlius
m.
