I am trying to find anyone who knows of a Frederick Antonio Faria from Tirano, Italy who married my grandmother in 1919 in South Australia.
I recently found my grandfather had a sister, Alexandrina, for whom my mother was named. Faria seems to be a very popular Portuguese name. There are direct descendants of my grandfather's siblings in Punto do sol, Madiera. One of my mom's sisters, Diolinda, visited them in 1992. I guess we would have to take our grandfathers back a couple of generations further to see if there is a connection. I have found my search frustrating, but interesting.

My grandfather was born in Madeira in 1894 and traveled to Santos, Brazil where he met my grandmother, Rosa Ornellas. They were married in 1924 and migrated again to the United States and settled in Newark, NJ. He had a brother, John Faria and a sister Isabel whom I believe stayed in Portugal. My grandfather also went back to Portugal to work for 6 or 7 years in the 50's and passed away in September of 1959.

I noticed the posting from Dennis Faria and then your reply. My grandfather, Antoine M. Faria was born in 1890 in Punto do Sol, Madiera. His father was August M. Faria and he had brothers. I don't know how many. August owned and ran a farm and my grandfather went to Madiera in 1955 to settle his father's estate as his brother had been running the farm since August died and if my grandfather hadn't gone to Madiera to obtain his share, his brother would have been given it under the law. I have been trying to find information about my grandfather who immigrated to the US through Boston in 1913, lived in MA and then CT where he died in 1978. Thanks.

Mary Faria Maceda

Hi Shelby,

We may have a match. It's hard to tell. First, my Mary is thirteen years older than her siblings and that makes me question if the dates are correct. Secondly, my Mary is listed with the maiden name of Maceda, but one of her sisters is listed as Faria Maceda. Also, her youngest brother, Joseph, born in 1885, took his mother's maiden name of Faria rather than his father's name of Maceda. The story I've ehard is that there were no males on his mother's side to carry the name on so it fell to him. Again, I have no documentation to back that up.
Here's another interesting tidbit. I have a note that says that Manuel and Jescinta came to Hawaii to work in the sugar cane fields but I too have heard that some of the family were actually stone masons.
Have you ever run across a mention of Holy Sepulchre Catholic Church in your research? I have baptismal records that appear to be for my grgrandmother's family, (Rose, fifth child of Jescinta and Manuel) and the records come from that church. Do we have another match?

I'm going to run this info past my aunt.

Thanks! Laurie

Hi Laurie,

I don't have any documentation either, but I will share all I know. What I have is my Grandmother, Caroline Vierra who was born on the Island of Kauai in July of 1889. She didn't even know what day, but she always used the 7th as her best guess, and celebraterd her birthday on that day.
Her father was Antone Vierra who had come to Hawaii to work in the cane fields. He got free passage if he worked the cane fields for a certain period of time and then they were free to persue their own trade. He was a stonemason and later lived in Honolulu with his family. He was married to Mary Faria. The time frame of 1860 as a birth time for your Mary would be about right as my grandmother was one of the older children. Did your Mary use the name Faria or Macedas or both? Hard to say if this is a match without any documentation and the name Mary is so common and Faria isn't all that unusual I think either., though perhaps somewhat less so than Farias with the s. I don't know much about "my: Mary Farias as to where she came from or when they were married. I have heard she had blue eyes and was a local healer and could cure illnesses when the doctor's couldn't. I have a picture of her when she was older (black and white of course) and if her eyes were blue, they were dark blue, the deep violet ones. I tend to believe that they were as a lot of her grandchildren have blue eyes.
We could have a match, but only if your Mary used Faria as part of her name and the 1860ish time frame for her birth is correct.

Shelby

I have six children for Manuel and Jescinta: Mary(1860? This seems wrong), Manuel(1873), Anthony(1876), Emily (1882), Rose(1885), Joseph(1885?). Rose is my gr grandmother. I have not birth info on either Manuel of Jescinta except word that they were born in Sao Miguel. I was told that Manuel died in 1917 and Jessie died very soon afterwards, as if of a broken heart. I was told that Manuel was a farmer but it sounds as if they lived in town. My source is a great Aunt who is recalling the stories she remembers, but I don't have any documentation. Any info you;re willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mary was the sister to Emily Maceda. I'm tracing that lineage now for a friend. Emily married Joseph Lario in Honolulu (he was a Spaniard). And they lived close to the Macedo families on 5th Ave according to the Census for 1910, 1920.

I don't know anything about Mary except that she was Emily's sister. Did you ever get more info?

I'm working on part of this lineage for a friend. There's going to be a reunion in Northern California... we're looking at Manuel child Emily Maceda. She married a Spaniard named Joseph Lario. I noticed that the Lario's and the Maceda's lived close to each other in Honolulu.

Like Manuel, Emily made her way to Oakland. Let me know if you would like more information on this... or if you ever discovered anything about Manual and Jescinta's ancestors.

Thanks! --Serena Moon

Hi. I don't know of any help I can be, But your story and mine are quite similar. My family left Madeira and came to Honolulu on the same ship. Their last name was Rodrigues. Other family on that ship was De Silva and Faria. In Fact, the gentleman who came over from the Azores was named Joseph Faria. Does that ring bells? Anyhow, just curious.. thanks Hilary

Dear Laurie,

I am looking for information on my g. grandmother, Mary Faria. I know this isn't one of the persons you have mentioned in your messages, but you are the only one to have a Faria and Honolulu connection and that's all I have to go on at this point. Perhaps my g grandmother was a sister to yours.

All I know about my g. grandmother Mary Faria so far is that she lived in Honolulu. I don't know where she was born, but the date should be somewhere in the late 1860s or early 1870s. She married Antone Vierra (his family was from Madeira) and they had 12 or 13 children.

I have heard she was something of a local healer as well.

If you come across her in your research, I'd sure appreciate it if you pass the information on to me.

Thanks,
Shelby Green

Antone Faria

Hello,

I am looking for family friends and/or ancestors of Antone Enos Faria. He was my Great Grandfather (1880-1946) and was born on the island of Fayal in the Azores. He owned a farm in either the town of Praia de Norte or Cupelo on Fayal at about the turn of the century. It was his parents farm before then. He had a brother Joseph Faria and a sister Anna Faria. Antone emmigrated to Middletown, RI at about the turn of the century and settled there with his second wife Frances Moitoza Faria. His brother Joseph stayed in Fayal and managed the farm until the volcano erupted in 1957. He then moved to Providence RI where his sons has already moved. Joseph died shortly after teh volcano erupted. Joseph's son Gabriel Faria moved back to Fayal. He and his son Gabriel Faria Jr. have a dairy farm in Fayal (possibly Praia de Norte).
I am trying to locate them and or any other friends or relatives that would remember the Faria family of Praia de Norte. Both Gabriel Farias are still alive.

Antone had 10 children here in Rhode Island. Two from his first marriage to Jennie Soito (also from Fayal), Annie Oliver and Jennie Luiz, and eight from his second marriage to Frances: Mary Bothelo, Carrie Rose of Taunton, MA, Frances Medeiros, Anthony Faria, Joseph Faria, Frank Faria, and Mannie Faria.
