Kathleen-Its been a long time since you made a post asking about Amanda Jane Farmer, so I hope this message gets to you. I was searching the West Virginia History and Archives death records today and stumbled across her death certificate listed under the name Amanda Hogue. Her death certificate shows that she died April 16, 1922 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston.

I had originally thought that Amanda was first married to Sampson Borror, but found out today that his true surname was Bowyer. Sampson died sometime prior to 1900 and Amanda married Andrew Houge. They are listed in the 1900 Kanawha County census living with her son, John R. Bowyer.

Hope you get this.
Mike

VA Farmer family

Looking for possible connection Ann Farmer (sp. John Crisp) - trying to find out if she might be connected to Archer Farmer (c. 1740 VA)

First name Archer is in her descendants.... is this possible that she is connected to the family of Archer Farmer and Elizabeth Hubbard? I have their children as Jeremiah, Mary, Sarah, Jane, Ruth, Archer, Elizabeth, Edith.

Really getting tired of this brick wall. Her grandson was named John Archer Blanton and with naming patterns in this family would indicate that the daughter named her son John for her father and Archer for her mothers father.....

Thanks
AmyAnn

Farmers at the seige of Yorktown in the Revolutionary War

There were at least two and maybe three Farmers who fought in the Revolutionary War and were at the seige of Yorktown when the British surrendered. Isham Farmer of Pittsylvania County and Matthew Farmer of Halifax County.

As it turns out Isham and Matthew were cousins. Their common Farmer grandfather was John Farmer, (b. 1688, d. 1759) who married Susannah Cheatam.

The following text is from a signed affidavit from Isham Farmer stating that he was in the war with a war buddy named Lewis Haley. Haley was trying to get his war pension and needed the testimony of a couple of his war buddies to back up his own testimony.

“Isham Farmer of Pittsylvania County & State of Virginia do hereby Certify and solemnly swear that during the revolutionary war he was drafted into the Militia Service of the United States and marched under the command of Capt. William Dix and Lieut. Clement McDaniel from said County to Little York, then I was stationed at that place and was attached to the Regiment commanded by Col. Many weather [[sic, Meriwether?] and the said Lewis Haley of Halifax County and State aforesaid was stationed at the same time at that place and that both of us were present when Lord Cornwallis Surrendered his forces to General Washington and I believe that the said Lewis Haley was honorably discharged. Given under my hand this 25 day of July 1832. S/ Isham Farmer”

Jim Farmer,
Florissant, Mo
farmerfamilytree1@yahoo.com
Liz
Thank you We agree with you our Beatrices are two different people albeit with amazing coincidences . It has however made us question some assumptions we had made about our B. Researching family history has given some surprises including my husband finding additional siblings who were born in India . Amazingly one is alive and two of her daughters are married less than ten miles from us . We have all become close The story would make a great book but because it is very sensitive for those abandoned it must be kept private . I have heard it said in Ireland is 'If you open the door to the past be aware some skeletons may fall
out'
On that note
Good luck and I hope you will find some answers
Regards
Anne

Hi,Anne,

Sorry, really had a bad couple of days! Much as I would love this to be a lead I now think that these are all amazing coincidences! Our Beatrice Maud was older than your Beatrice Maud for a start, and she was also a music teacher - ring any bells? Allan was a real mystery to us,and also to you! I heard that he was born in 1877,but where that came from I don't know. I have a photo here of him aged 10 months with his parents who were named Duffy - I believe that they died young and he was brought up by his grandfather -1st name unknown, second name Grant. Everywhere I have turned with these two I have come to a dead end, probably because of the Indian connection. If you look up the Immigration lists you will find him, sometimes with Beatricesometimes with my Mother Heather, and with his son Trevor from his first marriage coming from India& at various addresses. When I found your Beatrice Maud Grant I naturally assumed that it was my Beatrice Maud, and that is how I got onto Farmer. So although I will try to research it more, and will certainly let you know if there is more, methinks that this is yet another dead end!
Thank you for your time and interest, I hope that I can find more to tell you but don't hold your breath!

All the best,

Liz
Hi,Anne,

Sorry for the delay in replying, we have visitors here. They are leaving this evening and I will reply at more length then. Suffice to say for the time being that although there are so many coincidences I don't think we have the same ancestore. However, it may not do any harm to delve a little bit! I have amarriage certificate for Beatrice and Allan and according to that they were married in London in 1914 - that would have made your Beatrice 15 when she got married! However, in those days ages, etc were often wrong - even and especially from the British Indian side of things, often people escaped to India to avoid detection! Anyway,as I say I will reply further this evening.

Cheers,

Liz

Hi,The trouble with the British Library is that I am in Australia, and they charge me $60 a search! We did however find our Allan Grant there,in his occupation as a Tax Inspector in the Indian Civil Service. I connected Beatrice Grant to the Farmers because I did in fact muddle up the two families, when I saw Beatrice Maud Grant had sailed from India to Stafford I assumed that it was my Grandmother, never thinking that there might be another BMG! Sadly,
although the coincidences are uncanny, I think that they are two different people, and here I am at another dead end. In answer to your question re a photograph, that is the sad thing,my Mother did not have one photo of her Mother, and as I mentioned she never, ever spoke of her. We only met her once when I was about 3 years old and I only vaguely remember her. Amazingly she lived for some time in Ootacamund, and died aged 77! They couldn't be one and the same could they???
Thank you so much for your help, I am very sad that all this has come to yet another dead end!

All the best,Liz

Thank you so much! Although the dates do not match the coincidences are too great! My grandmother was Beatrice Maud , and she was born in 1896, her father was John Frederick but we thought that their surname was Kenning. HOWEVER, sBeatrice married Allan Grant ,who was (we thought)a widower, when he was aged around 37,she was a great deal younger than him. After his early death, she went to Stafford,to stay with the Farmers. I have been searching high and low for this family, and if for some reason she changed her name to Kenning, and originally came from India
it is no surprise that I could not find them. The only place that I found them is on the immigration lists, going to and from India. Allan actually worked for the British Civil Service in India. Tell me,where did you get this information? You say there were no children from the family, Allan and Beatrice had one child,my mother Heather Jane, she was born in India. After Allan Grant died something happened between her and her mother, and we suddenly realised that although my Gran had been alive for many years we had never been taken to see her,and my mother never, ever spoke of her. I had all but given up on her but this could put a huge new slant on things! I would love to hear from you again, even if you think that your information may not be my Grandmother! I have been so despondent at not being able to find this side of the family! The coincidences however seem to be too many to be a false lead!

Again, many, many thanks for taking the time to reply to this, I am SO grateful!

I just saw this post.

The majority of the Farmers you seek are still in and around Macclesfield, Crisp, Pinetops, Fountain, and Tarboro.

They hosted the Eason-Farmer-Thigpen family reunion in Pinetops this past weekend. We have this reunion annually during Labor Day week-end.

Lewis Farmer and Addie Farmer have passed away. From these parents Ollie Ray Farmer (Joe) have still living only 2 sisters--Louise and Addie (Cat) and 1 brother--Marvin (twin to Melvin-deceased) Farmer.

Now from Lewis and Ada Thigpen, Joe has living sisters Barbara Jean, Aurolla (Slick), and Jody and brothers: Arthur Lee and Jim.

I think that's all Joe's siblings. Living in:
- Pinetops
Addie (Cat)
Marvin
- Tarboro
Louise
Barbara Jean
- Rocky Mount
Jim
- Greensboro
Arthur Lee
Aurolla (Slick)
- Wilson
Jody

Barbara Anne

Who are you?

I am also working on the Reuben Farmer/Sarah Smallwood family and cannot go beyond Reuben Farmer. According to Ancestry.com Family Trees, Sarah was the daughter of Wilkerson Smallwood and Sarah Clark. If that is correct, I have some more information on Sarah Smallwood Farmer. All I know about Reuben Farmer is that he was captured by the North during the Civil War and died of smallpox in Camp Chase Confederate Priosn, Columbus, Ohio. He was buried in a military cemetery in Columbus.

If you have information to share, please let me know.

Looking for David G Farmer, married to Peggy Dix in Daneville, VA

I'm kind of stonewalled on my father's side of the family as I really don't know my father. All I know is that my grandmother's name is Peggy Farmer (maiden name Dix I believe) and my grandfather's name is David G Farmer. Historical records are not pulling up anything. Help please!

I have checked the online British Library records for Allan Grant and they do not show The india Office records are only about 70% complete as many were not transferred at Independance of India We have in the past made many trips to the Library and found it really useful It is based in Euston London and we live in the west country However the records are also on index cards at the library so from those we got the link to the relevant microfiche at the library from where we were able to get photocopies if the relevant family records
Do you have any Photos of your grandmother?
the british library address for family search is
http://indiafamily.bl.uk

Interesting similarities however we know our details re birthdates are correct as they have come from the archives of the India Office at the British Library
We are very interested to know your sources of info re Thomas Henry F Farmer (THFF)and the connection with Beatrice and Allan Grant
Beatrice Maud Grant Nee Farmer( Born24.09.1902 )was my husbands aunt She died in 1977 in India where she had lived all of her life
Before she died she lived in Ootacumund and we have always understood that they had no family However we have had a few surprises in searching the family history so nothing would surprise us1
Beatrice Maud's parents were Thomas Stephens Farmer and Nellie Beatrice (nee Trout born 1879) married in India in 1898 and they had 3 children Beatrice,Cecil and Thomas Henry Frederick
I wonder if families have been confused Yes our Beatrice visited Stafford in 1949 and we do not recall any further visits although she kept in touch by letter We have no information whatsoever re allan Grant apart from the details on the register Office record from Shimla
Thomas Henry came to UK in 1947 and stayed for a few months in Norfolk with his wifes family (he met her when she went to India as an Army nurse in 1945) before moving to Stafford and working life as a civilian
On retirement THFF and his wife left UK for NZ where he died a year later his wife lived a further 20 years
We are very interested and await further info
I will look up the link to the british Library
and send it later
Liz
I have Just re read my earlier message written in a bit of a rush.
Even for myself it is difficult to read with the complete absence of punctation.
We have been mulling over the facts .
Did you get the info that THFF arrived in England from India to Norwich initially and later that year to Stafford from word of mouth or a public record ?
It seems unusual to say the least to have 2 ladies of the same name living in the same area and travelling about the same time to uk. The immigration lists only one !
We do not know anything about the marriage of B and Allan Grant and we do not have anything to prove they either stayed together or otherwise
Do you have copies of BMD certificates for your relatives if so that would be proof we are barking up the wrong tree ot other wise
We would appreciate hearing from you again
Regards
Anne

Liz
It is interesting that there are so many similarities and I will see what else I can search for Our Auntie B (BMG) She arrived from India in Nov 1947 and stayed in Stafford with her Brother THFF ( My father in Law)She returned to India in 1949 We are not aware of her having made any other trips back to UK Alan Grants death as 1968 But I cannot remember where we got that date from as we do not have a formal record We know B died in 1977 as it was a couple of years before THFF and the family were informed When in Ooty I believe they ran a hotel or at least worked in one We have a picture of Aranmore palace in Ooty( it is now renamed) which we were always led to believe they had something to do with There were many secrets( Things not shared ) in the family which we have unearthed and it would not surprise us if there is some connection I researching the family We have found family we knew nothing about. I attach a copy of the Marriage record for our Aunt B and a picture taken on Milford Common Staffs 1949
That may help clarify matters for you
I wish you good luck in your research
Regards
Anne

Do you have any approximate dates of birth/death/marriage etc. also if they were married in VA, is that the area where they would have been living or are there other locations. And lastly, are there names of any children that would help locate them.
I searched Ancestry for both Peggy Dix and David G. Farmer and received some hits for various records, but a time frame and other names would be very helpful. Duella
